I have a friend who works at HBO. While he said he has not heard anything concrete, he said he shared an elevator ride with Peter Dinklage last week. He followed up with a couple people and it seems that Mr. Dinklage will most likely be our Tyrion! Great casting, in my opinion.

Winter Is Coming: Well, well, the rumors have begun. No idea if this is legit or not. Hopefully it is. But still, it seems like such an obvious thing to make up a rumor about. I guess only time will tell whether it is just wishful thinking or the real deal. Even so, I’m hoping we get some official news soon. Either on this or just a general update. It has been strangely quiet recently.

I know Dinklage has been the fan favorite but if there is any truth to this rumor I do have to admit that I’m disappointed.

Now we’re talkin’! I’m still on the fence as to Dinklage as Tyrion. He looks the part well enough but I haven’t seen him in anything other than Elf (very funny there).
I’m more excited that we have a genuine, bonafide casting rumor to discuss. I could literally feel my heart start beating faster as I read the post. Thanks Winter.

He’s a great actor. I’ve seen him in numerous TV shows and movies, and whether or not the show was good or not, Dinklage still performed very well.

Dinklage IS a great actor. My problem with him in the role is that he’s so much older than Tyrion is in the book. Tyrion being the youngest Lannister is important for a few different reasons. His birth caused the death of his mother, which in turn is the genesis of Tywin’s hate for him. That hate between father and son ultimately culminates in Tyrion killing his father. Tyrion’s age also plays an important role in his relationships with both of his older siblings.
I imagine that much of that is planned for the series but what does it mean if the actor playing Tyrion appears older that Jaime and Cersei? I realize that I’m probably getting way too far ahead of myself but it’s the reason I’d prefer to cast a young unknown as Tyrion over Dinklage.

Dinklage is a phenomenal actor (see comment above about The Station Agent) and really the only choice I can imagine for a character as complex as Tyrion.

Omagus: While in general I agree that they should cast actors as close in age to the character as possible, in this situation, if you can get an actor of Dinklage’s ability you have to do it.
He isn’t so old to not be at least believable as a late 20s character. People aren’t going to rush to IMDb, look up his actual age and cry foul. I’m sure most viewers will accept him as younger than Jaime and Cersei (of course that will also depend on who they cast for those two).

Please tell me how you’ll get all the minors that appear in the books to do some of the most explicit scenes (sansa in getting stripped for example, or Daenerys going about with her breasts bare).
Make up and creative liberty will do it for me. Lots of disappointment for those expecting a perfect and exact match to all characters.

I saw him play Richard III on stage and he was fantastic (the rest of the production was, unfortunately, not nearly as good). Richard III is sort of the darker cousin to Tyrion in some ways. I hope this rumor pans out as true.

Well, this is good news as there are basically only 2 good choices for the role. I don’t think there’s a problem with Dinklage’s age at all, but even if there were, you have to understand the dearth of actual dwarves with legit acting chops. It’s either Dinklage or Jordan Prentice ( http://www.northernstars.ca/actorspqr/prentice_jordan.html )

I think it is awesome that a real meaty role with a lot of depth has been created for a little person…realistically, when is there ever role of this type out there and a great actor to fill it? I think it is a great opportunity for Dinklage and his ability to act, and not just because his height happens to fit the part neatly. He is a great actor.

I’ve got to see th’station agent’…so many posters are hyping it…I’m still not sold on dinklage…and again I will mention what Peter Jackson did on LOTR…his ‘forced perspective! Filming technique allowed him to use any actor he wished for the hobbits and dwarves…
I’m curious about something…if you could chose an actor not based on ‘height’…
Who would you chose to playt Tyrion ?
Let’s please please open up the talent pool.
Why ?because the character is so key…modern technology allows he to cast whoever…I’m not anti Dinklage…I’m just for getting the best actor possible…

The forced perspective shooting (along with some digital tricks) used by Jackson for LotR makes sense for the hobbits and dwarves of that world because they ware fantasy beings, different races of people who vary from humans. Tyrion is a human who has a medical condition, most likely achondroplasia based on his description in the books. He is not proportionally short person, which is usually caused by hormonal or nutritional deficiencies (achondroplasia is a genetic disorder). If he was proportional with a full grown person there might be a case for it but with so many good non-proportionally short actors out there, why make things more difficult and more expensive to shoot?
Trying to use the techniques seen in LotR (which made sense in that context) would be needlessly expensive and time consuming – both luxuries far less likely to be granted in a TV show budget and shooting schedule.

I was thinking maybe Warwick Davis as Tyrion. I thought he was older than Drinklage but he’s actually a year younger.

I’ve never been a big fan of Davis as an actor. He’s okay, but I don’t think he has the depth needed for the role. Dinklage does.

If they can get dinklage as tyrion for the pilot it is a huge step in the right direction. He is an amazing actor dwarf or not. And tyrion is one of the most interesting characters in ASOIAF

Peter Dinklage or Jordan Prentice, age or skill. One isn´t too much old (people in “Middle Ages” were a bit “damaged” than us) and the other one is a fine actor too. I think it´ll be Benioff and Weiss´s little dilemma.

just watched the station agent with Dinklage…good film….his performance was good…a character that didn’t call for alot of range..:though his facial expressions are excellent…he really conveyed how alone he felt in the world just with a look…if he is Tyrion I wish him the best… It’ll be quite a challenge…hope he’s up to it …

Well i dont know about Dinklage. Tyrion has always been my favorite and ive always seen him as well, some sort of quasimoto. Twisted features and mismatched eyes. Having a good looking man play this role doesnt fit for me.
