Helfer’s mystery pilot revealed?

While poking around the internet for any Game of Thrones news, I came across a press release from March 18th for a pilot announcement regarding Tricia Helfer. It seems she has been cast in a pilot in production for Canwest titled The Dealership. It is a one-hour, dark comedy in which she plays the sales manager of a luxury car dealership.

Winter Is Coming: I don’t know for sure, but my guess is this is the mystery pilot she was referring too this past February. It seems to make sense, since she was talking about varying her roles and how her next project was going to be “a bit different.” A comedic role is certainly different than her usual stuff.

You’re probably right. Ah well, Helfer could have done well as Cersei, but I’m fine with someone else doing the job. Besides, Helfer might have been too familiar actress, fresh blood adds always credibility :)

I am sad… I was reviewing BSG and really enjoying her acting in the last few episodes…

BTW, I am sure someone else mentioned, but the guy who plays Tigh is SO how I picture the Lannister lord (Tywin (sp?)). Plus, he is an awesome actor.

I’m fine with Helfer not playing Cersei. While she was good as Six, it will be nice to see someone else’s portrayal.

As for Tywin, I’m not too sold on the idea of Tigh. For Tywin I picture someone more like Charles Widmore, from Lost.

This comment is not relevant for this blog post, so do not comment further :) I do wish that Winter picks up on that and initiates a proper discussion: would it be a disadvantage that Game of Thrones is based on a book series? I mean in the sense that the story is known in advance, and there won’t be any heated debates and specualations as to what happens next. Sure, only a minority will have read the books, but if they search for answers they will find them. A hype such as with Lost cannot be created, I’m afraid …

Tywin needs to be able to play tough, I think, other than act tough. Michael Hogan plays tough as an old and beat down commander, mas don’t think he’s even able to lift a sword if asked :p

Tigh did beat up a guy half his age with an iron pipe in one episode, though. He can shake down with the best of them when needed ;-)

Alan Dale would definitely be better as Tywin though, and possibly better still as Randyll Tarly (although that would only be an extended cameo, if that, in the third and fourth seasons.

Micheal Hogan(colonel tigh) would make an excellent Tywin lannister. He is a very capable actor who is more than talented to play that role.

@Marko…are you serious LOL ….the number of productions where the story is already known is beyond count….that won’t hurt the show at all …it will only enhance the interest in it.

Of course they are numerous, don’t be so condescending.
Relative to those where the story isn’t known: better for “enhanced interest” or worse for less speculation around it, what prevails? Worth also making a list of the most successful series so far, and check whether they were original, adapted, or half-way – loosely based on themes and motifs. Just trying to initiate a discussion … or rather encourage a new post to do just that.

    Fantastic news.

This is not Buffy or some other B grade series. As much as I enjoyed BSG, it was horribly written, poorly acted and full of cheese. It doesn’t come close to HBO productions like Deadwood, Rome etc. which is the level of quality I want to see for Thrones.

Hopefully whomever is in charge of casting will see past all these apparently fan-favourite B grade actors being suggested here.

Good I’m tired of seeing her in every show. I wish her the best in her new venture, but I’m glad she wont be in AGOT.

Well said, well said, I agree completely and loved those shows for the same reason. while I like BSG and Lost to some degree, both shows are sub standard compared to what I’m accustomed to from HBO productions.

HBO’s Rome series was based on history. Did that make it any less heartbreaking and climactic when Caesar was killed?

I wholeheartedly agree (Rome was a hybrid though – adapted from history, with completely fictional plot elements concerning characters not from history books – ok, technically Pullo and Vorenus’s names are mentioned in Comentarii) … again, I’m not suggesting that adaptation is detrimental, I’m not daft. Merely want to get opinions on whether it is even better if the plot lines are not known in advance at all and the (nasty) surprises come as such to everyone.

I really have to take issue with the opinion that Buffy and BSG were “sub-standard” shows. Sure, they’ve had their flaws, but so did Rome (which I loved) and Deadwood, which literally bored me to tears. I gave up after six episodes and got back to my life.

Rome had great writing and a great cast, true, but it also had weak plotting and it wreaked havoc on its own time line – it covers more than 20 years and almost none of the actors age! How’s that for realism?

If shows that can produce gems like “Once More With Feeling”, “Restless” or “The Body” (Buffy) or “33″ and others too numerous to count (BSG) are considered “sub-standard”, then the standard must be high indeed. One so high that I can’t think of a single show to pass it, including Rome and certainly including Deadwood.

Here’s my impression of Deadwood, by the way:

Irritated Cowboy: “Damn, I’m so irritated.”

    Old Cowboy: “Yup. Yup.”

Ian McShane: “People call me a limey even though my English accent is so weak you need a stetoscope to hear it. Also, I’m the resident badass, except all I do is talk. And talk. And talk some more, just like the rest of the characters on the show.”

Irritated Cowboy: “Damn it, Limey, you’re irritating me. Now I’m going to have to talk about it for a whole episode.”

    Old Cowboy: “Yup. Yup.” (dies)

Annyoying Dying Sick Guy: “I’m apologize! I apologize! (repeat until insanity)”

Me: “Unless you’re the guy who wrote this crap script, you have nothing to apologize for. Just die already so something will finally happen on this show.”

    ADSG: “I APOLOGIZE!!! I APOLOGIIIIIIIIIZE!!!”

While BSG might not have had the best acting, I have to disagree that it was substandard. I would put it on peer with the HBO shows in terms of quality for sure. In fact, it’s one of the only cable or network shows that rival those.

Also, I see BSG as a good parallel to ASOIAF in style. They’re both very similar in their POV style storytelling, both are very dark, and you never know how long a character might last, among other things.

If AGOT is at the very least as good as BSG then it will be a hell of a good show.

Bah, I liked all the shows don’t get me wrong, but the HBO shows where more gritty and the characters where real. Named one fight scene in buffy or BSG that rivaled the scene in rome in the Arena or when Al and the sherif had there fight in the street?

I never liked buffy though and I got sick of the corny fights in BSG. Starbuck as the badass boxer? Come on! Fight scenes aren’t about side kicks and women boxing down the entire fleet, it’s about crawling in the dirt gouging someone’s eye out so you can bang his head against the earth until he dies even though your ear is half chewed off. BSG was great the first season but quickly lost its luster.

BSG first season was definitely the best, but the other season were well above average I think. But it is true that the gritty realism found in hbo shows mentioned was lacking in bsg.

Still… personally I found BSG more exiting than Rome.

Anyhow, I am also against too many known “cheap” actors… Let the show establish itself.
HBO has shown that it can do gritty real storytelling especially with Deadwood.

The way I see it, asoif is not going to get any viewers from “who is the next cylon?” or lost style “what happens next on the island?”.
So I would rather not have it to closely related to those shows. (though I still like both!)

Finally, though I actually do believe that Helfer could have made a fine Cersei.

It’s so hard not to laugh at the classic sword swinging figure 8 at :11 in the Buffy video. That move seems to be a classic indication that the fight scene is gonna suck and be filled with cheese.

I loved the boxing match between Lee and Kara. Maybe the fighting wasn’t entirely believable, but I think the scene was much more about Lee and Kara going through catharsis, that incredibly bittersweet human process, together. Yes, it was exaggerated, but I still felt the characters were being genuine (considering their personalities and relationship). For myself, in this case, the emotional potency was more important than how realistic the details were.

They’re both horrible suggestions. Time and time again HBO has blown us away with their unorthadox casting of semi-knowns or has beens and their spot on castings of complete unknowns.

This is not going to be soap opera like BSG, Buffy, Firefly, Jericho. I loved all of those shows. But come on guys, I agree with anon above, this is HBO! The finest casting, writing and production that hits television.
