WiC turns one

It is sorta poetic that almost one year to the day that I started this blog, filming for the pilot has wrapped. When I started this I thought that following this production so closely might make the wait even harder since I would be constantly thinking about it. But the time has seemed to fly by. That is thanks to many of the great discussions we have had here. You guys have made this site what it is and have led to HBO sitting up and taking notice of this fan base.

So with the filming over and HBO contemplating a series order, we will have to keep the buzz building. Let’s make sure HBO knows they would be crazy to pass this one up. Even if we get the good news soon, it may be another year or more before we finally get to see this on the small screen. That’s fine with me. I can wait. A Song of Ice and Fire fans are used to waiting. In the meantime, I’ll be here, bringing you the news and info. And of course, enjoying the great discussions.
So here’s to one year of Game of Thrones blogging. And hopefully many more to come.

  • first of many to come I hope. It seems only yesterday when I first came to this site (via link on Tower of the Hand).

  • Wow, congrats WiC! Thanks for all the great info and for building a smart, funny, and respectful community!

  • Thanks for this FANTASTIC blog and all the effort and enthusiasm you've put into it, Winter! Congratulations!

  • Congrats, Winter!

I'm with you on this. We like things done right. They've made great strides so far, and I'll be happy to wait until they're happy with what they've got.

  • Gratz, Winter. A heartfelt thanks for all that you do. We are better-informed fans for your presence (if a tad crazier than when we began this journey; never has the refresh button seen such use).

Looking forward to the next seven-plus years.

  • Congrats winter and congrats to all of you guys cause this is such a wonderful comunity!!
@ayh my f5 button is almost without the ink…..xD

  • Happy first anniversary to WiC! Gods, where did the year go? Thanks Winter for starting the blog and for the fantastic work you do, and to all the gang for making this site such a fun place to visit everyday. Here's to many more years to come! :)

  • This site rules and I check it all the time. Thanks for doing this and keeping it relatively spoiler-free (I've only read through Game of Thrones).

  • Happy first anniversary to you, WiC – and to us! :) This is the first fan-community I've really been a part of and I feel better for it. Thanks to everybody on this blog (even the sockpuppets) who has made the wait worth while – I'm looking forward to many more years of heartfelt discussions and laughs…

  • Yes, congratulations Winter! The year sure has flown by!

Here's hoping that someday in the near future, you'll have to consider changing the name of this site from Winter Is Coming to Winter Has Come.

  • Congratulations and happy first anniversary, thank u for bringing the news to all fans of the series, fast and true,i wish many more years to write, comment and discuss here, hopefully episode reviews every week ;) Cheerz

  • should we start some speculation on who would play WiC in a mockumentary about the rise of this blog?

hehe seriously though, congrats. glad we could play our small part.

  • Hey. I didn't realize this blog started on my birthday. I don't know if I remember the first time I came here but I think it was close to the first post. I do remember the day I found out that the pilot got the greenlight. I can't believe that was over a year ago!!

And I guess it is fitting that the pilot would wrap close to one year after that announcement. Maybe that's a sign that the show will premiere next November. January 2011 seems more likely, however.

Thanks for the blog and intelligent reporting over the past year.

  • I can only echo the previous comments – happy birthday, WiC! Thanks for faithfully and passionately keeping up this awesome blog. I can hardly wait for the show to start!

  • Congrats Winter….you've done an amazing job….congrats to all posters for helping to build the hype…

  • @dholds

    Or what about:

    just some thoughts.

  • Just chiming in to say that I'm so eager to see this make it big. I'm a sort of newcomer to the series (finished the books for the first time just about a year ago) and I was delighted to learn that the series is expanding not only to the small screen but to video games and other media as well.

Can't wait to see this all come to fruition! =)

  • Thanks to you for your dedication, Winter Is Coming!! You deserve, at least, a short role in the series…. ;)

    Valar Morghulis!

  • happy bday wic!

thanks for all the great info and fun discussions, here's to a year full of even more exciting news!

  • Happy b-day, well done, and congratulations, WiC! Happy and proud to be a follower since the beginning. Time sure does fly by. Here's to many more years!

  • happy anny WIC,

Great site, great people, (even the lulu's) …. and get ready for a great ride for the best is yet to come!!!!

  • Thanks for all the great news and posts in the last year!
    It´s very much appreciated.

    Greetings from Germany,

  • Happy birthday, and thanks for all the updates! Hopefully we'll have the updates coming for several more years.

  • Happy happy B-day WiC!!
I remember starting to read the first book ages ago, borrowed from the library. But didn't get into it, was a teenager back then, and somehow stopped reading after the direwolves were found. Don't ask me why. :P Had to return it to the library and forgot all about it.
Last fall I happened upon it again, back from a year of travelling, weary and full up to my ears with impressions! Began reading again….. And this time!!! ;D…

Just got my teenage relative addicted, he texted me yesterday halfway into the second book – hooked!
I joined the "following" here in january… when something made me google the books – odd as I never google books or stars or anything of the like.
I'd like to look at it as meant to be.

Sure been enjoying every little bit of this year (in between frustration when news has been slow and clues to difficult for me)
    So thanks a million!
ALL the best WiC!! You rock!

  • Verry Happy Birthday Winter! What makes this blog so amazingly awesome for me is that it's not jumping on every rumour and anonymous source, but it's a more journalistic one on which the reports you can rely. Keep on blogging till many more winters in the next decade!

  • Great job. I've been reading your blog for months and finally quit putting it off and started posting last month. Between here and the great folks at Westeros, HBO would be crazy not to take note of the fan base.

When the series is picked up, I think you can consider yourself a significant part of making it happen. Here's to more years of fun and fandom!

  • Congratulations WiC! This is a great blog and I've really enjoyed discussing all the news (and clues, lack of news, speculation, etc). Fingers crossed all goes well with post production on the pilot and we have more to discuss soon :)

  • Congratulations WiC! Or how we say in my corner of the world, felicitats!

This is a great site, and it can't do anything but grow. If we've made such an impact on the production already, wait for the show to be realased and we will blow the servers xDD

  • Hey there WiC,

Congratulations! [:)] You have been doing some amazing work for the ASoIaF community over the past 1 year, and that has led to the overwhelming popularity of this blog. Now that the pilot is over, its time for phase two- lets hope HBO goes full steam ahead with the first season.

Cheers, mate! And keep up the awesome work! [:)]

  • congrats and happy b-day WiC! i have to agree with others on the sentiment that this is the first series/movie fanbase that i have been following so closely and that is mainly thanks to your blog and your efforts.

@Fabulous Mr. Gude: i'm just trying to act as the voice of reason (the one that you hear over your sholder) and i'm not trying to be pessimistic. god knows that i want them to succeed with all my heart! if they had the pilot as a DVD, i would get it. if they had it as a download, i would probably miss out due to the stupid constraints of copyright/region bordering/etc.

i'm from the faraway fairyland of stupidness called Estonia – most of the good series we get late or never. so for me to see something in a way that it would still be relevant and i could chime in on the discussion is unfortunately the illegal way. our market is just too small for that (however, FoxLife started showing FlashForward only a couple of weeks after it premiered in the US and by now we also know that the show is a total heap of crap).

i try to show my support for the shows i like by getting them on DVD. i have most of the BSG (altho i'm still doubtful about getting the last season because the ending was just that bad). i have Band of Brothers, first seasons of Farscape, Firefly, some Doctor Who, etc, etc, and i'm planning to treat myself to the complete The Wire box set this christmas. so, you might say that i'm not actually the audience that HBO is looking for. hoewever, if they show is any good (which i don't doubt), i will get it on DVD as soon as it comes out.

P.S. the same goes for GRRM's books – they are starting to become popular with two volumes out (i believe both are divided into 2 books), but i have never read them other than check on the quality of translation. they are definitely not on par in popularity with HP or Twilight series, but they are slowly building a fanbase. i own all the books in english (the same goes for other (fantasy) series i read) and that will probably be the way i continue to read fantasy – why spoil the books by reading them in a language they were not written in?

    end rant

  • Happy birthday WIC –
This makes me want to go backward and see how long I've been posting here, I started anon posting before I got a livejournal account.

  • My first post was on January 9, 2009 in the Tyrion speculation post. It was the one about Jordan Prentice having a credit for playing a "giant bag of weed." Hummm…. I'm glad to have been following all year.

  • Congrats WiC! You are doing marvelous job and I can't thank you enough for this site!
I hope that next year will pass by as fast as this one did, because I desperately want to see direwolfs in front of me on TV :))

  • oops corrcection to the above, my first post was December 18, 2008 at 10:03 "I'M NOT WORTHY" when I read the review of the pilot. I'm glad to see we're all still here!

  • Happy B-Day Winter and thanks to all of you who make the waiting more bareble with fun and interesting discussions. So three cheers for Paul Gude, invertebrae, Rabbit, Rimshot, dholds, peeter, Knurk, sliverstar and all the others who give me my asoiaf fix during my boring work day. And especially WiC for bringing us all together.

  • Thank you so much WIC! You've really made a not so great year for me fly by as well, and I can't thank you enough for that! Very awesome job!

  • Congrats Winter!

Hopefully we'll all be here for the next 7-10 years obsessing over each and every episode of seven full seasons.

  • Happy birthday to WiC! It's amazing how time flies! Before we realise, we'll be in front of our TV watching this DVD again ad again (I really want them to release the Pilot on DVD!).

Winter you're my hero! Thanks for your contribution to the community. I have no doubt we all be here for the next months.

  • Yay Winter! I love love love your blog!!! I'm very excited for us all to continue our wonderful chats about the series!

  • Peeter,

You've actually highlighted something that I should have said earlier with my congrats, but neglected.

Part of the reason this blog is so great is that its readers are individuals and bring something unique to the discussion. We're all fans of ASoIaF, but we all have different thoughts on the production.

Your highlighting of the John Adams effects gave me a new way to think about CGI. I was impressed by Sky Captain and Sin City in their use of green screens for their backgrounds, but never thought they would be able to fit seamlessly into real-world location shots. It doesn't mean we agree on anything.

I marvel at Ryan's expertise when watching his Sopranos Promos and sometimes get into arguments with him over tiny tiny details.

Legion has an amazing head for clues, and a razor-thin tolerance for people who like bad comedians. We don't always see eye-to-eye on everything.

Paul J is infuriating with his ability to know the right thing about everything, and pulled off one of the greatest clue coups ever.

There are too many folks to name. We've got nitpickers and true believers, Sandor/Sansa fans and R+L=J deniers.

I can't think of a better place to spend my time watching folks talk about this show.

  • Feliz cumpleaños, WiC

I'm not sure you believe, this, but I think I've been following this blog since its very beginning. Had it not got a different background scheme then?

Anyway, congratulations to the blog, his owner and soul, and all the terrific posters that make this site so exciting to read!

  • happy birthday, WiC!! it's funny, my birthday was yesterday. Does that mean that WiC is a Scorpio too ;)

I looked back to find my first comment here, which was December 15, 2008 as Nicole. I will repeat what I said there:

Thank you so much for taking the initiative to start this blog!!

We've really grown so much as a community since then and I only see bigger and better things for us fan bois and grrls.

  • Yeah Happy birthday WIC! ^___^

I have been lurking this board since the first casting announcements and not a day has passed since then without me visiting this page :P..

  • Happy Birthday!!
It sure is poetic that the first anniversary coincides with the pilot's wrapping up, it's definitely a (good) sign!! :)
    Congrats for your great blog!

  • Happy Birthday WiC! Wow time flies. Your site is top notch and very classy. Way to go setting the right tone since day one.

  • @andrea

That's Gabriel Aubrey, and you're not the only one who thought it is the very image of Jaime.

    BUt… he's a model, not an actor.

    And Halle Berry's +1, FYI

  • Thanks WiC for making a highly accessible && approachable blog. I can always count on this website for GoT news.

And thanks to regulars and lurkers for an interesting chemistry to bounce ideas with. It's been fun.

  • Congrats on being my number one must check site for the past year. I don't know how you've found the time but I'm glad you have. Keep it up!

  • Geez! Nothing left to add, the other folks took all the good lines and ran with them! Still: I'm glad I bumped on these pages quite early, since they bestowed me with many entertaining hours.

Cheers to Winter, all regulars and all lurkers (or: still got-to-become regulars)! Keep your heads above the waterline any time, cause Drowned Man tell no tales!

    P.S.: Feed me, Winter!!!

  • A lurker since last year. Congrats WiC! I greatly enjoyed visiting here and reading everyone's thoughts and opinions.

  • Congratulations for the first year of the blog, and let's hope for many more! You have done an outstanding job of informing all fans about the potential of this marvelous effort.

I hope HBO comes to the right decision and gives "A Game Of Thrones" the go-ahead for a full season (and more to follow afterwards, hopefully).

Thank you for maintaning our interest in the books and the potential series, as well as building the buzz for all of this!

Cheers to a good year, and a better one to follow!

  • Congratulations on your first year of impeccable coverage! Winter-is-Coming truly has become the principal source for news, rumours, speculation and discussion on HBO's Game of Thrones!

I for one have been following your coverage since December 2008, when Mr Martin gave your site his shout out. It has been very enjoyable to read all the news and discussions related to "Game of Thrones" here.

In order to congratulate you I had to get my first LifeJournal account – the things we do for… well, passing proper compliments.

All the best for you and for what's coming – hopefully some years of great television in the spirit of Mr Martin's "Song of Ice & Fire"!
