Day 11: Filming rolls on (UPDATED)

Filming continues today and it sounds like they are still shooting exterior scenes at this point. Either they are still working on the execution scene or they’ve moved onto the King’s arrival (I’m aware that the picture on the right is actually of the King leaving Winterfell, but it is some of my favorite ASOIAF art and it sorta relates, so I had to post it). And based on Esme Bianco’s recent tweet, it sounds like the weather isn’t cooperating.

It would seem stilettos aren’t the best plan for location shoots in torrential downpours!Thankfully someone lovely is fetching me wellies

The peculiar thing is, why is Bianco out in the rain at all? We know, from the leaked script, that her scene is indoors. Perhaps her role has been expanded? Maybe Tyrion brings her with him to Winterfell and she is present at the King’s arrival? It’s also possible she just wanted to watch some filming today.

In other news, Costumegate has sparked some considerable debate over whether they plan to shoot 30 more episodes next year. I really don’t see how that is possible, but since it is out there I am going to do my best to try and get some sort of official confirmation either way so we can put this to rest.

Oh and don’t forget, today is GRRM’s signing and after party. If you are going, be sure to head back here with a full report and any photos you may have snapped!

UPDATE: Made an awesome discovery over on Flickr. A user named Gerry B22 has uploaded photos of the shoot in Tollymore. Including pics of the fake snow and dead direwolf!

He titles the photos as pics of the Your Highness shoot, but the presence of a dead direwolf plus the fact that he states they were taken on Oct. 30 means he is obviously mistaken. Don’t forget to take a peek at the pic of the direwolf being packed for transport to get an idea of the size of the thing.

UPDATE: This article from the Belfast Telegraph talks about the GRRM signing today and has a quote from the man himself that reveals where they shot the execution scene.

Mr Martin said he was pleased by the impressive turnout of fans and said he had used his trip to visit locations for Game Of Thrones. “We were at Cairncastle yesterday for an execution scene. It was a bleak setting and pretty appropriate,” he said.

“I haven’t been to the Paint Hall yet, though.”

Yeah, it is a huge leak. I'm a little nervous about posting it now, actually. In my defense, I wasn't the one that uploaded them onto the internet. GerryB22 did and I just found them. I'm sure if I hadn't, someone else would have eventually, right?

Well if I get an angry email from HBO at some point, I may have to take them down. That is assuming their ninjas don't take me out first.

Paul: I agree. If I were HBO I would be ecstatic to have a production that has such a great interest that stuff like seeing a fake, dead animal is a huge deal. I'm worried that HBO might not feel the same way.

I also kinda feel bad if those working hard on the production are trying their best not to have this stuff spoiled for us ahead of time and photos like this leak out. But, I mean, it is going to be well over a year before we see this on TV (if we even get to see the show, of course). So I hope they aren't upset. If you want to play it safe, maybe don't post the actual pictures, just the links, and if whoever posted the originals chooses(or is convinced) to take them down, you don't have to worry about taking them down as well.

You are awesome, that find of yours with the Direwolf pics is totally off the charts. To me HBO has done justice to the Direwolf look, she is just has I imagined, and since all I read here are kudos concerning the Direwolf, I don't think HBO will be sending any ninja's your way.
Off that subject, I wonder if anyone can take that pick of the Stark actors together at the book signing and photoshop them with the proper attire and appearance, that would be just to cool.

Knurk: I think they probably covered it in the fake snow once they were ready to film. The book says it was "half-buried".

Half-buried in bloodstained snow, a huge dark shape slumped in death. Ice had formed in its shaggy grey fur, and the faint smell of corruption clung to it like a woman’s perfume. Bran glimpsed blind eyes crawling with maggots, a wide mouth full of yellowed teeth. But it was the size of it that made him gasp. It was bigger than his pony, twice the size of the largest hound in his father’s kennel.

Wow, that direwolf looks amazing, but makes me wonder how they will do the "live" adult-sized ones in future episodes. Seems like they will be forced to use CGI. I'm not sure even trick photography (like what they did in LOTR with the hobbits) would allow them to make a real wolf look that big. I'm very pleased with what I'm seeing here though. It seems like a crew member would know it's for AGoT and not Your Highness. Unless it's common/possible that he was working on Your Highness and has just continued working on AGoT without really being told that it's a different thing? Like if the Paint Hall has a crew that just works on whatever is being filmed there/near there. Definitely odd that he got such a close shot if he's not working on it, though. Perhaps he has a really great zoom on his camera.

On the size of the direwolf… I wonder if they'll necessarily be going that big with the live wolves? As of AFfC, it's been about a year, or less than two anyway, since the start of AGoT. I know most dogs aren't fully grown by that time, though admittedly a lot of the growth after that is bulk as opposed to height. Since direwolves are so huge, I don't think it would be too hard to get us to buy that they take a few years to get full sized, and therefore the pups will never get quite as huge as the mother during the series. Of course, slightly less huge would probably still take CGI anyway, so why bother?

    some notes:
it's really interesting to watch fans' interest in a project up-close. although i do have to say that i haven't encountered this detailed a coverage for any other production i've followed before. maybe it just shows how loyal or into it the fans are (or maybe of their maturity). maybe it speaks of the locations it's being shot at (lotro was done at the edge of the known world, for pete's sake). or maybe it's just the natural evolution of fandom due to the world getting ever smaller thanks to technology. i'm very interested in how the future shapes up (first when they get into studio and later WHEN the series gets picked up). at the same time it's mind-boggling how different are the "leaks" of the two upcoming HBO hit series – we almost know nothing about "The Pacific" but the amount of details we know about GOT is frankly quite staggering.

    Re: snow
for me this actually looks like the right amount of snow to use. a) it helps to bring across visually the distinction between the lands that are beyond the wall (something akin to northern sweden in the polar night) and the lands that are in the north (where people from alaska would feel at home) and b) the winter is COMING, meaning you have to show that there is still somewhere to go

Oddly, the leaf-covered ground near the wolf's mouth are covered in blood, which leads me to believe that was an actual shooting spot. Plus they probably wouldn't just let something as expensive as a fake wolf sit in the dirt and gather grime (unless they were already done shooting it).

The only other explanation I can fathom for the excess blood on the ground is maybe that's where they sprayed the mouth, and the rest is just excess. But I doubt it. I think that's the actual site and we'll see the snow in a different place.

Oddly, the leaked script first said there was no snow:

South of the Wall the grass is still green and the sun is shining, but the air is cold enough to cloud the breath of four guardsmen as they escort Gared toward the stump of a massive oak tree.

Yet later by the riverbank, there seems to be some:

Jon thrusts another pup into Bran’s arms. Overjoyed, Bran plops down in the snow and rubs the wolf pup’s soft fur against his cheek.

    And:

Jon is about to climb onto his horse when he hears a distant whimpering. Leaving the horse behind, he ranges into a snow drift, and scans the ground until he finds the source…

The dead wolf in the picture looks damned real though.

I was going to be sarcastic and downplay the show, and all that.

Then something happened when I read some of the posts. I got EXCITED about the show, which hasn't happened since I found out the little guy [Dinklage] got the Tyrion part. Still I do not hope, as most of my life has been a huge disappointment–but, if the people in this production make a decent little movie out of this, and HBO signs, then wow. Seriously, wow. Maybe there's hope in this world and I won't die a virgin.

Oh yes I went to the signing. This is what happened:

I waited in line and accidentally read something too intelligent for my brain and I nearly passed out. Suddenly I was at the front of the line and something white and bushy confronted me in a professional-friendly way. I told him my online handle was "Whiney" which elicited from him a sort of vague call for help. A blonde woman trotted over and introduced herself as Parris and pretended to know who I was from online forums. I also pretended to know who she was, and then after a prolonged moment of silence, she excused herself very politely. Then GRRM and others signed the book I was reading, which was something by Hegel.

The actors, whoever they are, were increasingly friendly and made me very uncomfortable by insisting that they too sign the book. I asked if that meant I had to buy the book which I had pulled from shelf at random. One of them, with an accent that made it difficult to understand 90% of his words, smiled in a vague way as actors often do when there's talk of money.

There was an HBO lady who smiled so much without stopping, she made my face muscles twitch. She seemed very accommodating.

On my way out, everyone was talking about the "secret party".

A clerk asked me if I was going to pay for the book, which I had stuffed in my pants. He pulled it out, and with it peeped my nude member. Not knowing what else to do, I began to sing 'Oh, won't you pluck me twanger…' and was finally escorted off the property and given rude looks by the disaffected ladies and their jealous boyfriends.

I went to get drunk after that, but accidentally picked the bar that the motley crew had also chosen. Well, that's another story.

    @ Mr. Mister:

Very good question. I was thinking about the same thing. I'm starting to wonder how much I want to see beforehand, and how much I want to save for when the show finally airs.

I don't really like spoilers in general, but I doubt I'll have the will power to avoid leaked images for the next year.

I completely agree. Usually I'm pretty good at avoiding spoilers for shows I intend to watch, but I don't think there is any way I'll be able to stop myself with this one, plus…we do know generally what happens already.

No, ive been looking Knowtom.. What the Norman knight is wearing is a chain-mail hauberk over a UNDERGARMENT, read the text in the art where it points to. The surcoat would be worn over it all such as dipicted in the art on the right.

In that art it's a "tunic" or (what actually was a jerkin/doublet pattern) we saw on the leaked Baratheon extra over a surcoat, which is historically inaccurate.

My bad, let me correct my error. The depictions of the norman knights are from slightly different ages. I still can't find any historical references in my books for a undergarment to reach the ankles under a hauberk in battle…

Yes, I noticed the antler isn't there also. It could have been there during filming. I hope so. Thats a key part of the story. kind of a foreshadowing…

Did they eliminate Jory Cassels character in the pilot?

    Scott,

GRRM listed a whole bunch of people that may be "featured extras" or perhaps written out. I believe Jory was among them.

As far as the costume goes, remember:

    1) The principal actors have stated that the costumes are very good.

    2) One of our extras stated his costume was nicer than many he's worn in the past.

    3) That picture is an unofficial photo, and even then a few people (including my friend who is also a costume designer) have pointed out that even if that is the full costume it would be passable for an extra.

Also to keep in mind, Michele Clapton won a BAFTA this year.

I don't think there's any need to be concerned with the costume in that photo.

@Scott: I'm not sure they eliminated Jory (hopefully they'd keep SOMEone for us to mourn when Jaime pulls that middle-of-the-road stand-off with Ned) but they sure took his lines. He had two or three lines in the leaked script, but apparently those are gone by the wayside.

Thanks, AYH. By "written out," I was referring to this line written by GRRM in the comments section of a blog post:

    "
In the pilot (though not, of course, the series), Rickon, Tommen, Myrcella, Ser Boros Blount, Ser Meryn Trant, Septa Mordane, Jory Cassel, Hullen, Vayon Poole, Jeyne Poole, Beth Cassel, and Hodor will all be non-speaking roles or "featured extras." Some may not appear at all, or else will turn up only in the background. So don't drive yourselves mad trying to figure out who will play those parts.
    "

I don't think Jory will be written out of the series, just that GRRM mentioned he may not appear in the pilot.

Big freakin' wolf! Amazingly, I think it's actually smaller than described in the book which described it as the size of a pony, which are anywhere from 400 to 1000 pounds. That being said, when seeing this thing next to some people, I realize it probably doesn't need to be any bigger than it is. Indeed, bigger might seem a little too much. It's one thing when you read it in print, another when seeing it for real.

Oh, I'm not worried at all about the costumes anymore, they are in good hands. Not after some confirmation from Richard Madden (sp*)aka Robb.

I was just responding to some historical accuracy to Knowtoms finding of art from a game. I'm starting to even question if im right or wrong on this undergarment thing. I can't seem to find any history behind wearing a surcoat or undergarment of that length in battle. It's possible in that art Knowtom, that the norman on the left is a foot soldier.

That's truly sad if they wrote out Jory's character for the pilot. He has crucial character interaction between Robb and party as they discover the dead direwolf mommy.

A bleary good morning from me. No proper report as I've just woken up and am drinking my first coffee of the day, but a quick stop by!

The moot was absolutely awesome. I overuse that word, but it was. Richard, Ron, Esme, Maisie and Sophie showed up, and happily mingled with us for ages. Julia also turned up, and was one of the last to leave.

I spent a lot of time chatting to Maisie and Sophie's mums, who are very lovely (hello Maisie's mum! hello Sophie's mum! I know you're reading this!). Maisie and Sophie actually act like sisters, and get on so well – absolutely adorable. Richard came up to them as they were leaving to say goodbye to his 'little sisters'. Also very cute!

Esme is gorgeous, very tall, and makes me look like a dumpy dwarf in the photo I have of me with her.

Richard … is going to have half the female population swooning after him. Lovely, lovely guy, and I have photos of me with him first! So they're going in the safe for boasting purposes once he's a huge star.

Ron is just a sweetheart. Chatted to us for ages about GoT, and about other work he's done. He's so enthusiastic about it all.

In fact, all the cast are just wonderful. Really friendly, really enthusiastic, and seem appreciative of us all. I think most of them weren't quite sure what to expect from us lot, but I think we behaved ourselves and left a good impression. They're all honourary BwB members now, whether they like it or not! And we didn't need to mention WiC to them, really. They already know about us, and at least some of them have been checking this place out.

Didn't actually find out much real info about the shoot at all, because we were having far too good a time just getting to know everyone. Sorry!

More later, with pics, when I'm awake.

    Good morning!

@Paul Gude: great little script :)

Amazing find, truly … especially given it was labelled all wrong. How did you dig it out on flickr? Searched for Tollymore?

Thank you, Silvestar! reading with interest. Looking forward to more details an pictuers. To anyone related to the show reading these posts: I hope you like it! :) Am proud to be part of this community, first and foremost because everything is functioning on a highly mature level, with a lot of respect for the people both on the show (producing or acting) and on this blog.

What makes me all excited about the leaked visuals of all the different kinds is that we like them very much as they are, and they will look like crap once we see the real deal, in proper ligting, enhanced with effects on screen. We all know that, but I'm positive we cannot really imagine how much more awesome it will all look like, and will amaze as all even if we brace ourselves for it.

Silverstar: Thanks for the report! Sounds like a great time. I just love to hear how a large part of the cast has seemed to bond over this. Can't wait to see the pics!

Marko: Yup. Searched for Tollymore then filtered it by recent uploads. Still almost missed it too. It wasn't even the direwolf pic that caught my eye first, for some reason it was the ones with film trucks. Clicked on that, then started looking through the set and noticed the fake snow and direwolf and said "HOLY $@#%!"

Yeah, it's a public park and they couldn't close big sections of the park off, so they filmed early in the morning and my mid-day where finishing up leaving the public free to explore, so to speak. As for the crew they weren't really interested in what was going on or who it was for but rather in getting paid.

I have to agree with Mr. Mister. I read WiC everyday, but I'd much rather the photos be SPOILER marked because I'll have to stop reading if photos of the costumes and wolves and all keep jumping up in my face. I'm really bummed I saw the direwolf photo, even though I did an oh-crap-quick-look-away.

But, otherwise, great job Halfhand! Love the site :)

lugejetboygirl: Point taken. If I were to hide the spoilerish stuff behind a link that you had to click on to read the whole post, would that help? The only downside I could see is that if you wanted to read the comments you would be exposed to the entire post, spoilerish sections included. But if there is spoilers in the post itself, you can be sure there will be some in the comments also, so maybe that wouldn't be a problem?

Yours, and anyone elses, input on this issue would be greatly appreciated. :)

I like the jumps you introduced early on to hide the part of the post containing spoilers. This is still useful in many cases. Not in loger posts with updates, though.

The issues of this sort are only going to increase, and other smart mechanisms will have to be somehow employed. No ideas what to do.

Perhaps the single major concern are photos (and potentially videos) of the sets and cotumes – these may be placed elsewhere and only linked to when you cannot hide them with a jump.

Not much of a help overall, sorry.

    @WiC

If there's a "quick" way on the blog software to convert a commentary post into a link, then, if you are serious about spoilering, edit the comments and spoilerlink anything you feel might be spoilerish. Also do that for your own posts.

Otherwise, put a spoiler warning at the top of the page or in each of your own posts and be done with it.

As Marko said, for me the only issue is the photos, which are harder to avoid with one's 'scanning eye' than text. Hiding them behind a link would be ideal in my mind – the comments problem doesn't seem to be a big deal because anyone reading the comments will know already that they are in spoiler-zone.

Hiding the photos behind a link will also protect people who get your blog updates via Livejournal. Like me. I had successfully managed to not-see the pic when I came to your site, but then it got me when I scrolled through my LJ Friends Feed! Ha!

Other people probably have better insights on how to work it than I, however. And really, whatever works for you works for me!

I think there two ways that WiC or any other website can approach this: play by HBO's rules and post pictures only if HBO approves, or basically, don't. If you do the former, it may very open up other possibilities later on (it may not, I'm just going by what I've seen happen with other shows). For example, the LOST and BATTLESTAR websites which were respectful of the shows and ABC and SyFy's policies sometimes ended up with exclusive 'scoops', set tours, interviews and so on. Those who didn't do those things missed out on some of those opportunities, but also scored some big 'scoops' ahead of time. But they were shut out of the loop on other things.

If, as was said a while ago, WiC ever wants to hope of getting, say, an exclusive casting scoop for later in the show, he won't have a chance if he's putting up or even just linking photographs of a pivotal event in the story a year ahead of time that HBO clearly aren't going to want getting out.

    That's my thought, anyway.
