Tidbits

Got a few small items to report on so I guess it’s time for another news round-up post.

  • Congrats to Robert Stromberg, visual effects supervisor for the pilot, who has been nominated a second time for an Academy Award in the category of Art Direction. His last nomination in this field came in 2004 with his work on Master & Commander, this time it is for Avatar. He didn’t win the last time, but the way Avatar has been cleaning up this award’s season, I’d say he has a pretty good shot.
  • Another congrats, this one to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has been named “Hunk of the Year” in Denmark by the Danish newspaper Ekstrabladet. Apparently Ekstrabladet does not have a problem with his nose! He attributes this honor to his starring in this TV commercial.
  • Lastly, IGN’s TV-related podcast, Channel Surfing, mentions Game of Thrones in their recent podcast (around the 28 minute mark). They talk about HBO’s comments about the pilot at the TCA. Nothing new, but it is still good to see the show continuing to gain more attention.

[Thanks to Cirdan, Allan and Michael for the above info!]

    Our Jaime is cool.
It seems strange, but NCW has stolen my picture of Jaime, somehow I can not imagine anybodey else in that role.

Hopefully GoT pilot will be on HBO by late Spring! Keeping my fingers crossed, and so is my son, he is a GRRM fan, too! Matter of fact, he introduced me to these wonderful books!

Not a chance for late Spring. HBO doesn't air pilots. If the show gets picked up its already been established we're looking at a Spring 2011 premiere.

maybe Spring 2011… all depends on how quickly they can get production going & get everything filmed. i would actually expect a Fall 2011 to be a bit more reasonable, unless they start filming by May/June

According to HBO's Head of Programming, if HBO greenlight GAME OF THRONES, it will be on the air in March-April 2011.

Also worth noting that Donald Sumpter (Maester Luwin) is currently appearing as a recurring bad guy in Season 2 of BEING HUMAN on BBC3 in the UK. He is a master of these pure evil roles, so it'll be interesting seeing him as the much more kindly and wise Luwing.

"Having said that, [Peter Dinklage] notes: "There are great roles that are written for dwarves."

That would include his current project, a planned HBO series called Game of Thrones, based on the popular fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. Dinklage plays the diminutive Tyrion Lannister in the pilot episode."

Thank you very much for the link to the article, what caught my eyes are his plans to produce a movie based on the novel "The Dwarf" by "Par Lagerkvist", what a great idea, and what a wonderful movie it will be.

    I smell an Oscar nomination.

I kept almost remembering a book about a bitter dwarf as I read GOT and Tyrion's chapters…I must have read Lagerkvist's "The Dwarf" 20 odd years ago–thanks for jogging my memory.
Very interesting news, hope it comes to fruition.

I am gonna watch New Amsterdam immediately. Well, asap anyhow. I think he's got the charm/smile to do Jaime Lannister, hands down. I can't wait to see him play a little nasty too.

Am I the only one who doesn't care for the nested reply threads? I find it very difficult to figure out where I left off last time I visited since there may be something new posted as a reply in the middle of the conversation and then something else new posted as a comment at the end of the conversation.

I, for one, much preferred the old system where every new comment/reply went to the end of the queue and I could just pick up where I left off.

But somebody pointed out the "Last Activity" option at the top, which allows you to see replies and comments in the order they are made. Maybe it will help you.
But still, I agree with you. I am not a fan nested reply threads either.
Perhaps WiC thought we deviated too much from the subject of his posts and sought a way to rein us in! : )

Maybe I'm just being dim, but what happens with the "Last Activity" button if there is a new reply to a comment from 3 hours ago and a new reply to a comment from 2 days ago made at roughly the same time? Wouldn't that completely disrupt the continuity of the whole discussion by putting those comments out of their original order?

I don't want to have to scan through the whole subject just to see if somebody replied to some comment in the middle every time I log on.

And I like how the discussions take odd deviations as they progress. You never know for sure where you will end up once you get started.

Agreed, I found myself captivated by the world but put off by the slim plot. I think the fact that he could still pull out an entertaining film from that mess of cliches is testament to Cameron's directing skills, but I still don't understand why it was nominated for best picture … silly changing it to 10 nominees.

Yeah, Bronn has got to be Dominic West (I almost wrote Adam West:P). Or Omar (too lazy to look for his real name). He is gonna be my favourite one to watch because I know they'll someone with a hard edge, that can carry off snide and smug, but undoubtably clever too. He is the most interesting character in the series for me, and I know they castig dorector will do him justice:)

In addition, the very last article mentions Craig Parker who is someone I thing would make a very fine Littlefinger if his schedule is open in time for the filming.

How about Gendry? Has anyone speculated on a cast for him yet? Surely, somebody thought of him over here or over at Westeros and I must have missed it, 'cause you guys never leave anything out :)
Or maybe it is just commonly assumed that they would cast an unknown actor…?

I have long been a champion of someone like Michael K. Williams (Omar, from The Wire) playing Bronn. There are few roles in a very Eurocentric-necessary cast that would allow for a splash of "color" (so to speak), and Bronn is one of those. Hell, he's never even described as a white dude. Just "slim as a knife, with black hair and a shadow of beard." Even his origins are vague. Dude could be some mixed-blood bastard from who-knows-where.

If we get Dominic West, I'd want him as Vargo Hoat. Because you know he'd dive into that lisp.

I think Gendry is too young to be a known actor. That's gonna be a tough role too. If they expect him to have any sort of vague chemistry with Arya, he'll have to be a young to mid-teen, age-wise, yet still be able to pull off the "muscled blacksmith's apprentice" thing.

It's refreshing to hear someone who has the same opinions on Avatar as I do. Outside of Sci-Fi/Fantasy fandom the consensus is that the movie was awesome.

I liked the graphics, maybe not the style, and absolutely hated the plot and the dialog was so cheesy and saturated with politics. The characters were awful also. So many pure evil/pure good types, the whole white hat, black hat thing going on in Avatar is so retarded.

All said and down, IMO Avatar was awful and a prime example of main stream trash. Though whatever you do, don't go to Yahoo and talk crap about Avatar because you'll immediately get jumped by a gang of band wagon Cameron DB's.

"Hi i played the chicken plucker, kitchen staff loved every second of it, played of lot of extra roles for Scottish T.V but that was the best to date hope it really takes off and i am asked back to do more scenes as an extra. Thanks every one involved.
