I've seen pilots that get greenlit and go to air without the show's official intro. I know if you have season one of the West Wing on DVD you can see this, just watch the intro for the pilot and the intro for ep2 and you'll see a big difference. Chances are good that there wasn't an intro for internal airing of the pilot to make the greenlight decision.

So, Robert Stromberg, who is Visual Effects Supervisor for GoT, just won an Oscar for Best Art Direction on Avatar. Not really a surprise that he won, but exciting for the show nonetheless.

Iknow its probably premature to hope for this at this juncture, but it would really stoke the fires of fan excitement! Set it to the series themesong and then we'd really be talking.

Oddly, it seems that not that many people watched carnivale. Which is strange, considering that it's one of the best tv shows ever made. It's an eerily mysterious and unorthodox tale about good/evil struggle. It's only two seasons, and I suppose they could have continued to a few more seasons, but I didn't feel like it was too open ended.

Now, when we are greenlited, I think it is time to speculate a little bit again.
I was thinking about the next round of casting, and I think that this time around there is not going to be such a big and excesive search for the actors, as it was for the pilot.
I think that they allready have the candidates for the remaining roles – the part of them coming of the bunch od people they allready saw at the first round of the auditions (I point out the younger characters as Gendry, Robert Arryn, Podrick, Lancel L. etc ).
One of the younger who is left for searching is actor who will play Sam Tarly.
Another big group of characters are the older one (Old Bear, Aemon, Pycelle, Walder Frey, Hoster Tully, Blackfish, Ser Barristan) – maybe they are going to pull them from a group they have allready auditioned for Luwin and ser Rodrick.
We allready know form Martins Livejournal – that Pycelle is allready cast.
So we are left with Litllefinger, Tywin, Bronn, Varys, Shae and Lysa Tully, and I am pretty sure that they allready have candidats to majority of the these roles, because we had a sort of confiramation from Adam Whitehaed for that.

Sopranos and Rome are both superb shows. True Blood is a very good and sexy series that is still ongoing.

Band of Brothers is an amazing 10 episode mini-series.

All of these are definitely worth watching.

Hey HBO people, I have a nice idea. How about a slideshow of the cast in their costumes? Yeah I know, don't hold my breath, but wouldn't it be something?

Hmm that just got me thinking. Does anyone know if they included a series opening and/or themesong when the HBO people viewed the pilot? Is that common practice for pilots or do they usually fill it in later? Brude?

It is pretty cool to see all the articles and all the blogs that give props to this series-to-be. This can only help spread the word to as many people as possible. As for the openning pic, I think it is awesome. Even that one pic can tell soo much about what we are in store for come next year. Winter is coming indeed!

HBO won me over with shows like "OZ", "The Wire", "Deadwood", "ROME" and "Carnivale", not to mention mini-series like "Band Of Brothers", "John Adams" and "Generation Kill". I think that "A Song Of Ice And Fire" will continue that wonderful tradition of great quality TV.

Swords is the longest of the novels, with Dragons the second longest. If they add more scenes in Kings, then I still think we'll be seeing 12 eps for that one. Considering Swords is the longest, I'm gonna say they add fewer original scenes to that one and will try to contain it in as few eps as possible.

It's going to be set in Germany, leading to a possibility they're going to fiddle the timeline and have Pullo and Vorenus involved with Varus and his legions getting wiped out.

HBO don't pair up their shows in the way networks do. If they show it in April 2011, they might air it in TRUE BLOOD's slot, ending the week before TRUE BLOOD S4 starts (in June 2011). It will likely air around the same time as TREME Season 2 (assuming it gets a second season one year after the first) but won't be a logical pair-up for that series ;-)

I thought Rome should've had at least one more season. Not so much to continue the story (Though seeing Octavian through to becoming Augustus might've been nice), but to allow the story it had to be fleshed out a little more. It seemed kind of rushed to me (with time jumps, characters being dramatically killed off before being developed enough for me to care, etc.), and I believe I've heard this was done primarily so they could actually finish the current plotline before the show was prematurely ended. I thought it was really great, but I don't think HBO let it live up to its full potential.

Definitely agree about the X-Files, but I'd say that wasn't so much due to the length itself as to the fact that they never changed gears: they started off with a couple mysteries at the beginning (what happened to Melissa, etc.), and tried to keep those unsolved way after everybody stopped caring. They should have solved those after a season or two, and come up with new goals and conflicts for the characters to replace them. I don't think Rome would have gotten tired, because it would have shifted gears, as it already had once (First plotline: Julius vs. Cato/Cicero/Brutus et al, Second: Octavian vying to take Julius' place, and both with Pullo and Vorenus showing the populace's side of the story)

I'd say watching HBO dramas in general is a pretty safe bet. I guess some people won't like some of them, but personally I've liked everything I've watched so far (The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Rome, Deadwood, Band of Brothers, Generation Kill, Oz). The Wire was my personal favorite.
