In a recent interview with Steve Morriss for the new online British entertainment and fashion magazine Re-Bel, Game of Thrones’ Harry Lloyd continued his streak of online and in-print Q&A’s in what may seem to some as a stake to claim the coveted Most Often Interviewed Man in Britain title.
In the page 7 interview, Lloyd was of course asked about ‘Thrones’:
SM: You’ve also recently filmed a pilot for a new fantasy series with Sean Bean for HBO.
HL: Yes, and although it’s fantasy, it’s very grown-up, it’s got a big complicated ensemble cast like The Wire. It’s like a political thriller set in a ‘middle earth’ type world, but less magic and dwarves, more incest and kids getting killed, backstabbing and blackmail, lots of nasty power-hungry people doing horrible things to each other. I play the son of the previous king who was deposed by people like Sean Bean’s character. My character’s in exile and he’s trying to plan his invasion to reclaim the throne that’s rightfully his.
Fire And Blood: Par for the course as far as Harry Lloyd interviews go, and it’s always good to get the word out. I’m pleased Lloyd gives very little away, save perhaps the ‘incest’ line, and that’s been mentioned so many times through various media sources that it’s nearly old hat. One interesting note is that his view of Viserys makes him seem to be one of the good guys, or at least a very sympathetic character. Which, really, is how Viserys probably sees it. Still waiting for more interviews with other GoT actors, but until then I suppose our One Lloyd A Month habit will suffice.
Props to Elio at Westeros and his tweet for the heads up, and to Firestar267 for digging it out.

Harry is doing a great job to promote GoT ! That's the exact type of enthusiastic actor you want in your series.
[Possible little spoiler]
It's a shame that he is playing Viserys, because it would be nice to have him in some long-term role, but on the other hand he really fits in the role of Viserys and i think he will be pretty good as our exile "begar king".

I always get so excited when I see GoT mentioned in interviews. It makes me remember that after years of yearning and uncertainty, the series it's a sure thing. It's going to happen. It's like reading that greenlight press release all over again.

Well if you look at Viserys's story, his brother's family was brutally murdered by rebels and traitors, and his mother fled the country, died on him because of his sister being born, and he's now had to live in poverty for 10 years? something like it. He's a penniless beggar with only his name to trade on (and his sister's body and lineage). And it slowly drives him mad, Targaryan predilection for madness being real or not.
As for the incest comment, considering that the Targaryans regularly committed incest much in the manner of Egyptian royalty, it's not actually giving the plot away. People are just a wee bit oversensitive about the twins.

OMG I LOVE him! The fact that he makes himself seem sympathetic is borderline genious!!
I seriously would like to grab the guy and him a big fat kiss on the mouth for that!! :D Awesome!!
*going hyper*
Talk about getting into character! Love it, love him, and *baam* he got himself a new fan… ;)

SPOILER:
Anyone who hasn't read the books and hasn't seen secrets spilled from other news sources may not have anything spoiled. When watching the first episode, they may simply assume that the incest he's talking about is the abusive liberty we see his character take with Dany in their first scene, not to mention the oft debated question of what "wake the dragon," means. The end of the first episode could still be surprising.
END SPOILER

Did you see him in his guest role on Doctor Who? He was a standout for me. I was so happy when I heard he got this role.
@sgnpQuote Reply
No doubt! I'm completely positive he's going to be able to make Viserys even better than I imagined in the books. It's one of those roles that the right actor can really make shine, and Harry Lloyd is that actor.
@sgnpQuote Reply
In a way it's logical that Lloyd is sort-of "in character" again, because they'll probably have to reshoot all the scenes in Morocco now, no?

If his Viserys is portrayed half as wicked/crazy as his role in Doctor Who's "Family of Blood"… holy cow XD

This may be old news for some, but I just found out that he's actually the great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens! That's awesome!
(Kind of like how Christopher Lee is descended from Charlemagne!)

This interview's been done before the HBO green lit the series. In the page seven:
The Little Dog Laughed runs until early April, what are your plans after that, hopefully the HBO show will get picked up?
HL: Yeah, we find out in March whether its been green lit, and if so we'll be filming all summer

I find very interesting his last words, or I just reading to much into it.
Are they plan to shot Dany s storyarc first?
Momoa allready claimed that his filming starts in July.
Also, I am very curious why we have not got any rumours on casting for the other roles, and there a lots
of them.
Is it too early?

I must admit that with filming due in June/July and us only two to three months away, I'd have thought we'd start getting casting news in fairly quickly for the first few episodes back, where we'd need the likes of Renly, Barristan Selmy and Littlefinger pretty sharpish.
It may be that HBO are holding back on the casting news for other roles until the Dany situation is sorted out.

I am surprised how often in interviews and media articles the nasty, brutal, back-stabbing, incestuous side of things is emphasized, when in fact there are just as many very sympathetic and likeable characters who you really root for, as there are outright c**ts!
I remember thinking this the first time I read A Game Of Thrones – the front cover review just says "Characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias", and then I read it and what struck me was how moving and emotionally compelling it was – Bran's character, Eddard, Jon's story, King Robb, Davos, Tyrion…. these characters for example are the real emotional heart of the story. The existence of really nasty cruel characters is not hugely more prevalent than in any fiction, where villains are essential to the story. Don't get me wrong, the villains, the ugliness, the moral ambiguity, the flawed characters, and the plotting are all brilliant, but they are only half of what makes ASOIAF so amazing. There are also moments of genuine heroism and nobility which I suppose have even more poignancy and credibility because we often see cruelty and harsh realism elsewhere in the stories so we aren't so sure that good will always triumph like it does in a lot of fiction.

I really do not know how the things usually go in the series.
Do they fill all the roles all at once before even start shooting the whole series, or they cast episode by episode?
I share your surprise, I also thought the we would have had some news by now.
The RabbitQuote Reply
Not episode by episode, at least. I would imagine they'll try and cast the entire seasons most important characters as quickly as possible – assuming they find the right talent.

I guess likeable characters are more common, and the nastiness is what tends to stand out and make this series more original? Plus, it sells, and it fits with HBO's style.

I imagine that the episode scripts need to be mostly finished before they can start casting. 1) They need lines for the auditions, and 2) they need to know what characters they are modifying/combining (if any) and how big the roles will be in order to know what parts to cast and how much they are willing to spend on the actors in those roles.
