George shares with us two photos – click to enlarge – of Maisie Williams getting ready for her role of Arya Stark, courtesy of her mom (and repeats the bit of info that the series is to resume shooting in June, in Northern Ireland):
Hear Me Roar: Does Maisie embody the true spirit of Arya Stark or does she? Share your thoughts and comment below.
UPDATE: Two additional photos were published on the site of Valyrian Steel, the company producing replica swords from the universe of ASoIaF. Despite being right-handed, Maisie Williams is holding their Needle replica – a gift from George R.R. Martin himself – in her left hand, as Arya would. Talking about character immersion!

Everytime I take a look at the kids or read one of their twitters I am reassured that this team knows what they are doing. Arya is, i will admit, my favourite character…something about that inner tom boy thing. Punch faces first, ask questions second. Ah, middle school.
Very very excited to see this girl blow our minds. Maisie, I love how excited you are to get back with your castmates and get started!

Cool…wonder if Maisie knows how much her character and that sword go through? Arya had one of the toughest (if not the toughest) roads in the series so far. Just got through listening to the book on tape of Arya and the Hound at the cross roads inn. "is there gold in the village?, is there gold in the village?, is there gold in the village?…" that will be one intense scene if we get that far.

I don't think she's too pretty. Remember, Ned compared Arya to Lyanna. I always thought of her as a pretty girl going through an awkward phase.
Not that Arya cares much, she's too cool to care about looks. I'm sure make-up and wardrobe and Maisie's performance will make her sufficiently tomboy-ish.

I DO worry that the kids may age a little too quickly, especially if HBO takes several years in between seasons…
But oh well. Maisie looks absolutely PERFECT to me, and these photos are amazing!
LexQuote Reply
I think costume and acting (behavior, posture etc.) should cover the tomboy angle pretty well. Tomboys aren't necessarily non-cute, after all. And later, with the right haircut and a smudge or four of mud, she shouldn't have any trouble pulling off Arry.

Sean Bean as Ned is very close, but maybe not 100%.

When I was talking to the girls and their mums in Belfast, they said their mums were reading the books and filling them in on the salient points. I know at that point they'd only gotten as far as the end of AGoT (I filled in Sophie's mum on Sansa's storyline over the first four books as she was interested in getting an overview, but we didn't get to Arya).
Adam WhiteheadQuote Reply
Has anyone told Maise that they're going to cut off her hair, I wonder? Poor Arya :(
peteyQuote Reply
LOL!
LexQuote Reply
Don't forget that they aged the characters up a bit for the show, so some developing breasts are perfectly acceptable for the show-Arya. Loose male clothes would hide all of that for quite some time. And regardless, it's not exactly a hard thing to hide breasts, even if she turns out to be very well endowed in a few years time. My best friend is a huge fan of cosplaying male characters, and even though she has ample cleavage, using nothing more than bandages she hides everything perfectly adequately.
I think this Arya is utterly perfect. With her hair shorn, some good mud, and a boys loose clothing– not to mention the Arya attitude– I think Maisie will be phenomenal. Very excited!

Yeah it's kind of hard to give a 'cliffs notes' version of Arya's journey. She's definately one of the more riveting characters. (SPOILER) I just hope she fullfills her 'prayer list' as a faceless man (er woman).

I can actually picture her at the end of book / season two, staring up at that poor Harrenhal guard in the rain with those big Oliver Twist "Please, sir, I want some more" orphan eyes…
[SPOILER is NOT DONE...]
Holding that coin up and then dropping it in the mud (so he will be more at her eye level)… and then SLICING THAT GROWN MAN'S FREAKING THROAT….
[OKAY, fiends, END SPOILER]
Is it wrong that I picture that scene and cackle like a madman?
The right director will know exactly how to film that scene.

She seems taller than in the pics from the signing-thingy. That might be a good thing, though. So that Sophie – her one year older sister – doesn't tower over her.
To the ones worried about her beeing older than book-Arya – As long as she's still clearly a child, she'll do just fine – it will still be a little girl out on her own in a dark and dangerous world. In fact, if she was as young as book-Arya, her more dramatic scenes might be borderline silly sometimes. It works in the books, but might not have onscreen.
I love her look for Arya too, like just about everyone else. The intensity in her eyes will be magical onscreen with the direction and all that. Man, oh man!
sjweningsQuote Reply
Wow! These pictures rock my world, Arya is my favourite character of all time and now we see a real girl swinging that sword like she IS Arya!!!
Only down point is that when Arya is really going to rock our world, as of Clash of Kings, she will be looking like a teenager. And that's not how I envisioned her at all. But I'm definately okay with that, you can't stop people from growing up.
KnurkQuote Reply
Okay, now it's well beyond creepy. I have a daughter that is just a bit younger than Sophie Turner, but I can still vividly remember when she was five. I would be horrified to find someone making comments about my daughter's chest on a website at this age.
What matters is that Maisie is the perfect Arya. Even these stills show how well she is getting into that Arya spirit. As for her being too "cute"…well, she's adorable, but I always pictured Arya as being a cute kid with messed-up hair and dirt on her face, so that doesn't bother me.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Bigger problem is she'll look like a full blown adult by the last couple seasons.
pualoQuote Reply
In GRRM's original plan, Arya was going to be 16 by the time of ADWD and the two books after it anyway. Whilst that hasn't worked out for the books, it could still work well for the TV series.
Adam WhiteheadQuote Reply
I was wondering about this. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize Arya was left-handed. Guess I will need to re-read the novels again.
furreverQuote Reply
Echoing what everyone else has said, Maisie is completely spot on for Arya. Seeing her with a sword (Needle?) in her hands is a dream come true. On a side note, when I saw the pics, I was making such a fuss my wife (who has never read the books, but already knows that she will never get me to another chick flick if she doesn't watch the series with me), came over to see what I was hemming and hawing about. When she saw the shots of Maisie she said I was, and I quote "Icky" for making such a rukus over a little girl with a sword in her hand. I was taken aback until I realised that looking at it from an outside perspective, I can see how it might appear "Icky"!
At any rate, Maisie is perfect for Arya (also my favorite character aside from her water dnacing instructor)!

What I mean is not that the children look too old, but that their growth between seasons may be too noticeable. This happened with Walt on Lost (and it's much more noticeable with boys, as their voices deepen). I just hope the changes between seasons aren't too noticeable.

shadallionQuote Reply

LexQuote Reply
Yeah, Sophie literally towers over Maisie, and as you said, Sansa and Arya are quite close in age. However, Sansa has always been described as "tall," so it works. I don't think we'll be seeing Maisie surpassing Sophie in height.
Intriguing fact: Maisie is a dancer as well as an actress, so her fighting style with Needle, as taught by the water dancer Syrio Forel, may actually incorporate some of that.
Isaac looks perfect as Bran as well. If these kids can act half as good as they look, they will be the breakout surprise stars of the production. Us talking about them right now isn't even a sliver of the attention they will probably get once the show begins next spring.

Authentic to the book should be authentic to real fighting. GRRM's world is a nasty, realistic and gritty one. Having unrealistic 'stage fighting' scenes would be cheapening that whole aspect of it.
I wouldn't be so sure of Syrio's approval too. He'd complain about her using both hands to wield the sword. :P
Come to think of it, Valyrian Steel's rendition of Needle looks a lot more like a downsized longsword than a smallsword/rapier/cut and thrust sword.

Like everyone else, I'm amazed how much Maisie is like the image of Arya I had in my mind.

Sure you can tell how tall she is :) The Valyrian Steel-made needle is about 30" (2.5') from pommel to point. Judging from the photo where she is holding the sword in front of herself, and using the sword as a scale, I'd say she's right around four feet tall.

If a romance novel ever featured the romantic coupling between a 13-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man, and the reader was meant to get off on that, that would be very, very wrong.
Particularly if it was set in modern day. That's another thing. The books are set in the equivilent of medieval times. Back then 13 was considered a full-grown woman.
This isn't medieval times and Maisie Williams is a child (I don't even think she's 12 yet). To say things like "We may have a busty Arya" sound like the words of an online pedophile.

We should have a baby wolf-dog named Nymeria delivered to her as a collective gift from the WiC community…

I still think that talking about breasts, be it with a pre-teen or someone who's 80 years old should be normal. Breasts aren't "dirty" and there is nothing wrong about mentioning them. It's as wrong to say that than to say she her hair is too long or her nose crooked. Like it or not, every women – child, teenager or full grown – has breasts. This "tabooing" makes me a bit sad tbh.

right! my bad!
if this is indeed the casting side for Dany, I'm glad it is closed as this means the news is coming soon!

Yeah right, Im not touching this topic. I'll just say people are way too uptight about nature.

Is Maisie ambidextrous?, I have two friends that write right handed, but they bat and golf with both hands and one actually golfs better as a lefty.

If she gets a trainer for the swordplay she'll look skillful, even with her less dominant hand. Either way, it's a new discipline she has to learn from scratch. It would be different if she had previous experience with fencing, because then she'd have to overcame all she'd leaned previously, sort of the process Jaime is on now, but having to learn to use a sword from scratch, it really doesn't matter training with one hand or the other. Rafael Nadal is 100% right-handed, but he learnt to play tennis with his left-hand because his trainer and uncle thought it would give advantage against the rest of the players (something to do with the way the ball spins, don't ask me).

While Wilhelm Reich would be proud of that statement, and I agree with you to a point, there are also levels of decorum that come into play. We're not living in a utopia where no one has hang-ups about sexuality, but neither are we living in a world where everyone respects the boundaries of others. I for one am not going to assume that Maisie is comfortable with strangers discussing her body.
Josh, I personally think that the statement @bkbritt87 made wasn't so far out of line. It actually answered pualo's question by speaking about the logistics of solving the issue, even bringing in a friend as an example.

The BBC are co-producing the show aren't they? Why is British TV not mentioned? I hope it broadcasts at the same time as in the US.

Although just for the sake of speaking up, it didn't bother me a bit, and I'm a father, of a girl. So there you have it, there are a lot of different opinions on this forum about what is "inappropriate".

Sadly, I live in Norway. Someone has to invite me to their country, or I'll have to become a pirate. Don't want to, but I'm not waiting 2-3 years for the dvd. Yarr.

I never connected her being bad at sewing and such with her being left handed, but it makes sense as left handed people are often taught to do things right handed just cause its easier on their teacher. Does it mention in the books anywhere that she was told to do other things right handed? I always assumed she was bad at it because it went against rebellious/tomboy nature.

Loves that fact that the Williams family are getting so affended by the comments that have been written, yes its what she is going to get now she is famous. You cant live your life thinking that everything is going to be ok, and everyone is going to love her, as thats not what is going to happen. The reality is that she is going to have people love her and people hating her, this is just life and thats what everyone gets.
