A few spy pics of Jason Momoa as Conan have surfaced and it isn’t very far off from what Jason may look like as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones.
Winter Is Coming: Wow, he’s looking pretty ripped. It is probably a good thing they will be reshooting most (if not all) of the Dany scenes as I don’t think he was quite this muscular during the pilot shoot. Having Drogo go from somewhat muscular to Gerard-Butler-in-300 level of muscular after one episode would be strange. Oh, and from the look on Momoa’s face in the second pic, it doesn’t look like he has quite got over his fear of horses!
[Thanks to dizzy34 and whippororwill for the heads up!]
UPDATE (5/27/10): Conan-centric webzine The Cimmerian apparently had someone send them fuzzy pictures of some of the CONAN movie stills hanging up at Cannes. You can see them in this article for The Cimmerian by Miguel Martins.

I think he will make great Khal.
Why we do not have any spy pics?

I'm not a fan of horses either…every time I hear a (real) story about one it most likely ends with someone getting hurt.

there is only one thing to say to those pics……hmmmmm *drool*

Well we did have some, none of the main actors in costume though. I think it's because HBO has put the loving fear of god in anyone who might have some pics to leak.
Fun fact, I used to intern at the production company that is now developing and producing this Conan reboot. Let's just say they aren't even in the same league as HBO when it comes to high-quality and professionalism.

Can that be why everyone around the internet is complianing that these pics look like a Xena/Hercules production?

I wonder if he'll try to keep this look for GOT.
It's hard work keeping your bodyfat % that low for an extended period of time. Might be he'll pack a few cheezeburgers before heading to Morocco again.

I was just kidding…and crying :)
They got some interesting and effective methods that HBO! :D
You can just be impressed by their effectivness to keep all doors and windows closed.
Lately I saw the pic of the lead actress in full costume of the Jane Eyre production, and now Conan, the both productions are not over yet.
We are here as beggars Kings and Queens begging for some mercy from mighy and cruel ;) (super – professional HBO !)
Compliment for them, but more waiting for us.

Haha, yeah. I would be surprised if this movie turned out to be good. Here is the guy that ran the production company. As you can see his credits is a huge list of box office bombs and direct-to-DVD stinkers.
It's a good thing Jason has Game of Thrones. Hopefully his career won't be too poorly affected by this.

When does the Conan film come out? It's likely to get slammed, and adverse press on one actor could turn viewers away……

When is Conan due to be released? Before or after GoT starts airing?

How are you? ;)

Also glad to see you're still around Legion. We'll need your deciphering mind once GRRM starts (hopefully) dropping clues. :)
I'm not sure but I think this is slated to be a summer 2011 release. So we should be safe.

I believe It is coming out months after HBO airs AGoT. Thank god because the Conan reboot is going to be bad on an epic scale.

Also, it's almost ironic that these pics come out and Frank Frazetta dies…hmmm

I dont know the age of ppl here but im 36 so I really grew up with Conan. I was 9-11 years old watching the movies and I suppose they kinda pushed me to be a heavy metal rollplaying geek…..until I found out that women existed.
Conan knew all along that women existed though….
We didnt have the same standards back then. I mean if you watch a movie from the 50's, 60's or 70's they are all great. If you watch a movie from say 1995-2010 they are all great.
But the 80's movies and even into the early 90's all movies are kinda B. Even the big ones. I watched Robin Hood-prince of thieves the other day and my god it was corny. They swung in ropes and melted steel over a campfire.
Back then it was one of the big ones…..like Highlander.
Try to look at highlander today. The fights that were so great really look like antpiss.
It is the same with Conan. It is really crappy but good for a 10-year old. So whoever they choose or whatever the budget it cant get any worse. I will always have that almighty feeling inside of me watching it for the first time anyway.
Conan-Schmonan…..I know he will make a good Drogo and that is all that counts. Im 36 now. Conan is far behind me. Come to think of it, Conan is kinda 10 years old mentally anyway. Wonder if that is because of who the actor was last time around? ;)
And Ive read all the Conan-books…. They costed 30 sek ($4) each where i bought my D&D stuff (Drakar och Demoner). Its all crap…..but in an 80's-crap-is-good-in-memory way.
But anyhow what I wanted to say was……and I will push for this in coming posts aswell; cant we all when the wheels of time has turned and its almost premiere 2011….
Cant we all, say 14 days in head of the magic date have a countdown?
In these days of statuses at facebook or MSN just join up for the benefit of all good?
"14 days left"
If we were 2000 who had that status at FB we would really get things rocking dont you think?
I will be back on this.
I will force admin to turn it into a post due time. ;)
Cheers

There were plenty of bad movies from the '70s and before, but those of us in our 30s don't remember them unless we saw them on Mystery Science Theater 3000, and that may have only aired in the U.S.
As for bad movies of the '80s and '90s, I blame production values. Special effects started getting to be a bigger and bigger deal, and producers paid much more attention to effects (cost a lot of money) and a lot less to scriptwriters (who are cheap). Unfortunately, good special effects don't stay good over time as audiences get used to even better effects. But good stories stay good. That's why we call them timeless.
All of this leads inevitably to the problem that the 'big' movies of that era look horrible, now, and don't even have redeeming storylines. But the Princess Bride is still awesome, despite being from the '80s, even though the effects were cheap even by the standards of its day.

Hmmm…
Not to piss on everyone's campfire, but…
I've been catching up on Stargate Atlantis and I must confess to being very disappointed with Jason.
He seems to mumble an awful lot and his voice is weak when he doesn't.
Drogo is supposed to emanate POWER.
What I get from Jason is more… um… surly.
Maybe he's confined by the limits of his Atlantis role and he can butch it up for ASOIAF.
Sure hope so.

I had always imagining a strong, intense, but not traditionally handsome guy for Drogo, like a larger version of Danny Trejo. I've never been comfortable with the the, "I know a few women who would like to trade places with Dany," team. I always felt that taking away the "beefcake" factor people wanted for Drogo would help remove the "romantic" aspects of a young girl being traded by her brother for an army.
Momoa is the main casting choice where I was like, "It's HBO's show, they know what they want and that'll have to work for me, too."

Description of Conan….
"Conan has "sullen blue eyes," long black hair, stands at least 2 m (6 ft 7 in) and weighs over 90 kg (200 lb) though this is a later extrapolation and Howard never gives dimensions for either. In the tales no human is ever described as stronger than Conan, although several are mentioned as taller (such as the strangler Baal-pteor) or of larger bulk. Although Conan is muscular, Howard frequently compares his agility and way of moving to that of a panther. His skin is frequently characterized as bronzed from constant exposure to the sun and his garb is most commonly a loincloth, sandals and a sword of some description, depending on his fortunes and location."
No offense to anyone here, and I DO think Jason will make a great Drogo, but Jason is not Conan. He 100%, absolutely, doesn't fit the role. His playing this role is akin to the white dudes who played native Americans in cinema in the 50's and 60's. It's just wrong.
Jason is Hawaiian/Irish and looks absolutely nothing like REH's Conan. Arnold didn't either, but at least Arny matched the physical aspect and ethnicity, Jason matches neither. I'm not racist and this isn't meant to be taken that way, this just isn't REH's Conan.
I realize that many, many women out there drool over Jason, and many Stargate fans favor him for his role in Stargate Atlantis, but do you really want him involved in the bastardization of the work of someone like Robert E Howard?

Dany is Daenerys, the shortened version is often used in the book.
