HBO’s official Twitter account posted an interesting message that seems to be teasing something for Game of Thrones.
Tuning in for tomorrow’s #TrueBlood premiere? Turn your TV on at 8:45 for a very special pre-show no HBO fan will want to miss. #GOT
Winter Is Coming: Notice that “GOT” hashtag at the end there? Now I wonder what that could stand for… Apparently HBO has plans to promote all their upcoming shows sometime prior to the True Blood premiere. This tweet from HBO makes it seem that maybe, just maybe, we might get our first glimpse at some Game of Thrones footage. Personally, I’d be happy with just the logo! Either way, I’ll definitely be tuned in tonight.
UPDATE: HBO just confirmed via their Facebook account that they will be giving us a “taste of what’s to come” with many of their upcoming shows, including Game of Thrones, tonight prior to the season premiere of True Blood!
UPDATE: GRRM has a new post up at his Not A Blog mentioning the Game of Thrones preview tonight and he specifically mentions it being a teaser!
UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune’s Mo Ryan checks in with what her sources have told her about the trailer: not much footage, just a “brief glimpse at what’s to come.”

Could just be the on air premiere of the new (and amazing) Boardwalk Empire Trailer + a new fall preview. So don't be disappointed if it's not a first look at Game of Thrones. That being said.. "HBO – The Buzz: In Production…. Game of Thrones" is possible. ;)

They're not going to reshoot the *entire* thing. I'm guessing location shots and scenes in which no one was recast will be fair game for this.
That said, I don't think we'd get entire scenes, maybe not even lines of dialog. Just "flashes" of things, similar to what I posted earlier.
paulgudeQuote Reply
The real reason people are thinking "Game of Thrones" stuff will be shown is because HBO tagged their tweet with: #GOT
There aren't a lot of other things that could mean.
paulgudeQuote Reply
This is great news! I'm so excited!
I'm not expecting much. Probably a brief word from D or D, a few behind the scene shots, but mainly a voice over saying Winter is coming to HBO next spring in a way that will make you hold your breath, and a brief description of GRRM's series and the world he created. I'm not expecting any actual footage.
But I'm very pleased that they included this GoT tag at the end of their Tweet. Notice how there is no BoarwalkEmpire tag nor any other tag whatsoever except for TrueBlood? This is HBO recognizing the GoT fanbase above all else and throwing us a bone. This is very nice of them.
This has got to be the best way to end a week-end working overtime at home!

HBO is showing the TrueBlood season 3 premiere at 9 pm ET/MT (well, in Canada at least), which I take to mean that those in the Eastern time zone – including me, yay! – get to see it 3 hours before those in the Moutain time zone. And I would assume the same goes fo the 15-minute promo that will air before it.
NymeriaQuote Reply
So to make it easier for everyone around the world, let's start the countdown. The promo should air in 8 hours, 53 minutes :)
NymeriaQuote Reply

paulgudeQuote Reply
Ha! Who said this was going to happen way back when! When the production schedule started slowing down and lack of news kept dragging on even I ended up doubting my prediction, but it looks like we will get something (wether its an official preview or not who knows yet) after all!!!
Kudos to HBO btw for getting something together for tonight! Smart marketing decision as no show on their current roster will draw folks to GoT as much as True Blood should.
As to the reshoot issue, whie I don't think this will be the regular trailer, there is more than enough shot already to give us a very strong tease. Look at Trueblood itself. They have been running "A Drop of True Blood" teasers for the past month or so now. Using what I believe are editied out scenes from last season, they did little 4-5 minute character mini-stories to get fans riled up for season 3 SPOILER (If you follow the show, watch Jason's mini-sode very very closely for a biiiig shocker). Before that they had even shorter teasers featuring SPOILER the face of missing Bill Compton on the side of True Blood (the beverage vampires consume in lieu of human blood) and close-up shots of SPOILER a werewolf from the upcoming season.
Lord Ned's HeadQuote Reply
Back to GoT I just had a thought. To clarify, I'm not saying I think they will do this, but depending on the outcome of the scene, what about showing the Royce, Will Gared scene to get things going? Its footage already in the can so to speak, so no new talent would need to be reshot. Its a concise little mini-story in its own right that gives tone and setting without revealing anything major in the plot. It coincides with HBOs penchant for little teasers (albiet way earlier than the TB ones). Lastly, it would pair nicely with the already released first shot of the show which was Will (or Waymar) on his horse. Its a little much to hope for, but it would be possible and I could make a Valyrian steel-clad promise to HBO to keep my subscription all year long if they opened with something like this tonight!
Lord Ned's HeadQuote Reply
To further clarify, but outcome of the scene I mean its gravitas. Does it create suspense, tension and interest? Obviously we would hope it does, but if it isn't strong enough they should pass.

paulgudeQuote Reply
Not to play the pessimist again, but let's imagine just for a second that there will NOT be any GoT footage shown. Is it possible that HBO just put the #GOT tag on that tweet because they know that we're out here, and interested in HBO, and they want to get our attention to show us the other new shows they have coming up?
It seems fairly possible, except for the fact that they would end up totally pissing most of us off. Do you think HBO could make such a bad marketing decision?
LexQuote Reply
*If* they planned on doing something big for tonight, I'd say that'd be it. The recasting wouldn't matter for it, they'd have all the shots they need. Still, it seems to me to be a little too much to expect at this stage. I'd REALLY be excited if it happened, but that really seems like something we'd get a little closer to the air date.
paulgudeQuote Reply
Let me just say that I'm already worried. The clothes don't look authentic enough, the atmosphere is a little bit stale, and Tyrion has a strange accent.
ButterbumpsQuote Reply
I honestly don't. If they weren't planning on showing *something* I think they'd just kind of ignore Game of Thrones, like they've been doing. That said, I think anyone who expects there to be a HUGE Game of Thrones thing might be disappointed. Watch the trailer for the preshow that Dizzy posted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdanZbgb0PQ&fe…
Like Burth said, the trailer featured shots of Bored to Death, Hung, Entourage, Boardwalk Empire and something else. Plus "Never before seen True Blood Features," which means there's going to be a LOT crammed into that 15 minutes.
So:
1) They wouldn't put the tag in without there being SOMETHING Game of Thrones related.
2) It's not going to be anything too involved or huge.
It leads me to believe it's going to be part of the "upcoming shows" segment. I doubt it'll be anything longer than a minute.
Still, you can pack a lot into a minute.
paulgudeQuote Reply
Considering that all we officially got was one still, a minute is a lot. That's how starved we are. Anything is better than nothing.

http://www.facebook.com/HBO?v=wall&story_fbid…
paulgudeQuote Reply
First, I think it's too early for them to show the full prologue, but mainly, I just don't want to get my hopes up.
Second, I would like to discuss the wiseness of showing the prologue as the first teaser for Game of Thrones. The Others and the wights are deep fantasy stuff. As much as dragons would be. Is this the image they want to use to promote the series? 'Cause the first image they give will stick. It will define how crtics and media describe and classify this show until it airs. Don't get me wrong. I love GRRM's prologue and the creepy atmosphere it sets for the rest of the book. But you've got to admit it doesn't reflect the whole of the series. Unless they show they show Will finsing the dead wildlings, then him coming back with Gared and Waymar to discover the bodies are gone and describing how this is strange and kind of impossible, and how it is starting to get incredibly cold, and they cut there, leaving the mystery unsolved.
So I'm not sure they want to use it as their first teaser. Though it depends on the public they target. TrueBlood fans are probably more open to fantasy stuff than mainstream HBO suscribers. But if they want to promote the medieval war side of the series or the combination of all the series aspects to attract a wider audience, I think they will wait for more footage to be "in the can".
NymeriaQuote Reply
Yes, let's get every negative thought out right now and set everybody's expectations so low everyone will be satisfied and pleased and have nothing bad to say about tonight's feature. :)
NymeriaQuote Reply
I agree with this. I still think it's important that the prologue is the first thing shown *in the first episode*, but I think that when letting people know what they're going to be in for week to week, focusing on the political side of things would be smart in the trailers.
When you show the fantasy stuff in the first five minutes of a full show, it's immediately followed by the rest of the episode, so it's completely balanced out.
paulgudeQuote Reply
Exactly. I think the goal is to make people interested at this point, not necessarily tell the complete story. It's why I think they'll be able to pull at least some brief images from the pilot.

At this point, even a taste will be completely awesome.

Good point Nymeria. Not to mention, from a purely selfish point of view, I'd much rather see some shots of the main actors in costume. Seeing Dinklage, Bean, Headey, and/or NCW would be much more interesting and exciting to me, and probably a lot of casual HBO viewers as well.
That being said, if they show the whole prologue, I certainly won't complain. :)

SyleonQuote Reply
The fifteen minute thing had me scratching my head as well. Its too long for an episode of the buzz (they run like 3 mins or so I think) and I doubt if the prologue itself is that long (I am guessing it would be 5-8 minutes in length, totally arbitrary of course). so how about this… An extended episode of the Buzz (or something similar with behind the scenes footage and interview snippets. Start it off with the currently airing shows like Hung, then hit the new shows like Boardwalk Empire. Finally end it with a section on Thrones. After the GoT portiong t screen goes black and we get a VO "and now HBO is proud to present the first 5 minutes of the highly anticipated series A Game of Thrones comig to the network next spring". With the 15 min time frame you get 5 mins for the Buzz feature with 8 mins for the Prolougem (give or take) and then another 2-3 mins for commercials before the start of TB.
Am I going a little overbaord here? Probably. Like Winter said, I'll be happy with a show logo or any sniff of news at all. but the fanboi in me just can't help but speculate and speculate big. At least the timeframe fits ;P
Lord Ned's headQuote Reply
Yeah, my guess is it will be a long version of The Buzz and right near the end they will talk about Thrones and then show a little footage/trailer.
Since The Buzz is kinda "Access Hollywood for HBO" does anyone think they might give us some casting news as well? That would be a cool way to announce it, especially if they have a big name for Littlefinger or Pycelle.

I am also in Vancouver, and tried to look up the TV listings. It looks as though HBO Canada will be playing something like three episodes of True Blood in a row, the last one starting at 8pm. However, in regards to doing this to gage the buzz, there is no reason they can't give us news AND check in on what kind of reaction it generates. HBO Canada's website says that they're showing the Season 2 finale at 8pm, then the Season 3 premiere at 9pm. Does HBO have commercials? Is there room for a 15 minute piece in there??

So, HBO's latest post said that it would be 8:45pm Eastern/Pacific:
http://www.facebook.com/HBO?v=wall&story_fbid…
That means basically folks with HBO that are in the Eastern time zone are going to see it three hours earlier than folks in the Pacific time zone. Another way to look at it is that folks in the Pacific time zone are going to get to hear from the folks in the Eastern time zone about what to expect around 5:45/6:00.
However, I'm not sure how Canada fits into all that. I'm guessing this is for US folks?

It looks like Vancouver might get the preview at 7:45 Pacific Time, instead of 8:45.

Also, remember that we never really had a *verified* description of the Game of Thrones trailer shown at the investor meeting. It could be that the last three minutes or so will be dedicated to Boardwalk Empire, followed by Game of Thrones, pretty much exactly what they showed there.

what they should do with the prologue is show Wymer Gard and Will walking through the forest do the who Will finds dead bodys, wymer mocks him, they go to the clearing wymer mocks him some more wymer hears the snaping of twigs and the rusting of undergrowth and he turns around just in time to see the screen cut to black thus creating suspence which will make people want to know what happens. the phrase Winter is Coming to HBO materializes on the screen.

I'm with PG on this. I expect GoT wouldn't get the same treatment (time allotement) as TB or BE. But still, I'm now convinced we'll see the new edition of the Buzz, so a less than 4 min promo showing everything that's to come on HBO.
So if I break down the last Buzz edition, which lasts 3min, 47s:
14s Intro
Coming shows:
40s True Blood (June 13)
20s Hung (June 27)
28s Entourage (June 27)
28s Bored to Death (Fall)
40s Boardwalk Empire (Fall)
Renewal News:
10s Treme
12s Curb your Enthousiasm
6s Intriguement*
10s How to Make it in America
7s Real Time with Bill Moyer*
7s Ricky Gervais Show
*=not sure I got those titles correctly
5s Ending
Based on this breakdown, I would say the worst could be a 7s mention, the best, a 40s slot dedicated to GOT. But we have good ground to expect at least 20s since GOT is not a renewal, and the coming shows had 20, 28 and 40s features.
However, the fact that this will be the first ever GOT mention on HBO leads me to hope for at least 40s.
So here. This is way less than the first idea of a 5-min feature inserted in a 15-minute promo, but it's more realtistic I think.
NymeriaQuote Reply
Maybe a dead Direwolf and an antler being pulled out of the throat? Though a shot like that would appeal to the fans more than HBO viewers, essentially regular subcribers they wouldn't get the foreshadowing and would probably think the show is about large beasts fighting eachother.

My guess is that the blurb will focus on the new seasons of Hung and Entourage, with a heavy focus on Boardwalk Empire. GoT is at the stage where it's certainly worth a "Filming starts in July on…" mention with a brief description of the show and its stars. A clip or two from the pilot would be a huge bonus.
Certainly it's a big moment, the first mention of the show on the network itself. It will be the first exposure to the show's existence for the majority of its potential fans. Putting it before the True Blood premiere is savvy enough. Now, it'd just better make the show look cool!
I'll certainly be setting the DVR.

Well, the Pacific episodes all lasted around 50 minutes, leaving 10 minutes for promo before the next feature presentation. They only show promos. No commercials.

GRRM posted this on "not a blog" we already have confirmation but he mentions a teaser. I mean that could mean anything, but a teaser is typically some footage a little more than a promo but not a full length trailer.
"be sure and watch the third season premiere of TRUE BLOOD tonight, for a little taste of what's coming on HBO, including (yes) A GAME OF THRONES.
In fact, you might want to tune in fifteen minutes early, to catch the pre-premiere feature. I'm not exactly sure when the GOT teaser will run. Before the pre-show, as part of the pre-show, between the pre-show and premiere"
So he wasn't in the loop as to when it was airing. But yea I don't know if I'm reading to much into the mention of a teaser.

Syleon, I think you're exactly right. "Teaser," in the way he used it, would mean a small trailer.
The "you snooze you lose," bit is a little harsh for people who are going to be saving money all year so they can afford HBO when Game of Thrones airs, and for people in other countries.
Still, the teasers for Treme and Boardwalk Empire made their way to HBO eventually, so it's not like we'll be out of the loop for ever.

This HAS to turn up on youtube somewhere. If HBO is smart, they’ll provide it themselves…

Painful isn't the word. lol. I certainly hope we get it at the same time, as the BBC is still partially funding this, are they not?
Samantha HirstQuote Reply
Well they are filming on UK soil, so i suppose a UK group would want an in, though i have no idea how that all works. It would make a ton of sense though.
SyleonQuote Reply
(Back on my computer ahhh!) I think Ser G is probably closer to what we will get with his mention of the series, but I can still hope for more =) Yes, chances of the prologue are slim, but there is really no reason why they couldn't do it. As mentioned before, the scene should be in the can by now so the final footage should exist. I know its early and its not the way HBO usually does things, but they have been allowing for 4-5 minute TB minisodes in between shows over the past few weeks (with other ads and junk in between) so the current format should allow for something like a 5 minute tease if they wanted to go that route. And if they did go that route, just think of the excitement it could generate! Nymeria might be right that its too early for quite that much excitement and maybe doing something like the prologue would fit better time-wise when Boardwalk starts later this year. From a demographic standpoint though, there isn't a show in the lineup better to pair GoT with then TB.
Lord Ned's HeadQuote Reply
If we got something similar to this Broadwalk Empire promo – I would be very, very pleased.
The_Rabbit01Quote Reply
If they're true to form, it'll show up on their channel eventually.
Still, there's no telling when. They posted their "Time Lapse" video for Boardwalk Empire on December 22nd, nine months before the series is going to air. The first *teaser* for Boardwalk Empire was posted in May, though.
I agree, though, I can't see a benefit to delaying it too long. The trailer will be sought out, watched obsessively, the link to it will be passed around, etc. All those hits COULD go to HBO's YouTube page.
paulgudeQuote Reply
Mo Ryan of Chicago Tribune added more info .
The_Rabbit01Quote Reply
I've been told that they can sometimes be slow on posting these videos to HBO.com and their YouTube channel. But you are right, it would be a missed opportunity to capture a ton of eyeballs if they delay too long. Some fan will have it up if HBO drags their feet.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Did you see this bit?
"Check back here later tonight for the trailer, which I will post here as soon as I can. By the way, I've asked HBO if the "Thrones" trailer will be accessible to those outside the United States. I haven't gotten a definitive answer yet, but if I do, I'll update this post."
Am I reading this right, that she'll be posting the trailer? It sounds like the only question is whether or not what she posts can be seen outside the United States, not whether or not she'll be posting it.
paulgudeQuote Reply
I just called Comcast and added HBO just so that I can see this live tonight and not have to wait for it to get posted on YouTube. How's that for a dedicated fan base? Hope you are reading this HBO execs in charge of programming! Keep Game of Thrones on the air and you will continue to get my money.

Lucky for me I already have Comcast Digital Cable, so all I had to do was call and have them add HBO… it was done in seconds. Plus, they are running a promotion right now–$10/month for the first 6 months.
furreverQuote Reply
Awesome… Definitely sounds like it won't be the same trailer as what was described at the investor meeting, as that seemed to have quite a bit of footage.
I hope we can at least catch a glimpse of some of the actors in costume, whether its behind the scenes or what. I'll be happy for anything but I have a feeling that like Mo Ryan said, it won't necessarily be a "trailer" like you would see for a finished product, but that doesn't mean it won't have some footage or at least something…
Very exciting either way. Also, seems like a good time to release a press release with some new casting announcements, HBO ;)
ChrisQuote Reply
I don't recall commercials, since I mostly watch HBO Canada shows on the On Demand channel, but any commercials would be short, and probably entirely promos. HBO shows are not a strict 45 minutes, some exceed 60 minutes depending on the episode, so it is really hard to say. IMDB doesn't list the episode length unfortunately.
spacechampionQuote Reply
The interest for this is huge. It is bound to turn up as a torrent which is lucky for us living in a country where HBO isnt an option (Sweden).
I will watch it after work tomorrow.
c0venantQuote Reply
I think what she is saying is that she will embed the trailer into the post as soon as it is up at HBO.com or YouTube. Which we'll be doing here as well (along with every other sci-fi/fantasy/geek-oriented site I'm sure). Don't think she is saying she will have exclusive access to the trailer on the internet.
The question, of course, is whether HBO will region block the trailer for anybody outside the States. Not sure what their usual MO is on this. Hoping they won't do that, would be a real shame for all the international fans.

Yeah, I think she is just assuming it will be online later tonight. Frankly, I'm assuming the same thing. Like you said, it would be an epic fail by HBO marketing not to get it up right away.

I mean, honestly, if I was them, I'd post it sometime after 9:00pm Pacific Time. That way it wouldn't eat into the West Coast viewership, but would still pretty much get the drop on any bootlegs if it's encoded at a higher quality than people can rip.
paulgudeQuote Reply
Yeah, that makes the most sense to me as well.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Well now that we have a little more news ( thanks Mo) I guess I have to adjust my over-the-top optimism for a big preview =) That said, what can we hope for? Mamoa on a horse? Bean cleaning Ice? Jon holding Ghost? If you could pick just one shot that they would show tonight what would you want it to be? I'm going with the King's Party arriving at Winterfell for ecomomical reasons. Its probably to one shot where you'd get to see the most characters together. All the Lannisters, the King and depending on the shot maybe some Starks as well.

If I would go for an image that would tell new viewers the most about what to expect from the show in the shortest amount of time from footage in the pilot that doesn't have Cat or Dany in it?
Bran watching his father kill another man.
Although, my guess from the other teaser trailers I've seen on HBO is that we'll get a lot of images with no real "story," to the trailer itself, just an announcement that the series is coming next spring.

I guess they treat it as promos and they don't announce promos. But once you get use to HBO, you know their commercial-free episodes never last a whole hour and the few minutes left before the next presentation are filled with promo after promo of HBO's current and coming series, documentaries, etc… and it is often repetitive.
My prediction: 8:45pm: promo of TrueBlood s3 premiere, coming next, followed by promos of Hung and Entourage, coming June 27. Then, pre-priemere behid the scene look at True Blood s3. Then, the new the Buzz:what's in production edition featuring maybe 30s of Game of Thrones. And after that, promos of this week's documentary, other current series and once again, True Blood s3 premiere, before the actual premiere finally starts.

As you see, I still doubt GoT will get a whole promo by itself, despite GRRM calling whatever is coming tonight a "teaser". The way I interpret it, any GoT mention is a teaser, and it doesn't mean a proper "trailer".

So can we safely assume that any actors we see in tonight's teaser are not being recast? For example, there's been speculation the Heady could have left the production. If we see Cercei tonight, it would seem to me that we can put this fear to rest. Thoughts?
furreverQuote Reply
Accoridng to this tweet, sounds like the trailer will be airing at the very end of the 15-minute pre-show. And will probably be approximately one-minute long. I'll still be watching the full 15 minutes though, in case they give us a little extra info other than the teaser.

so basically like any first tease trailer for a movie. 30 seconds to 1 minute. not a lot of actual footage but enough graphics, titles and pics/film to give an impression of what the show is about. some movies do some really obscure and opaque stuff. the first tease for Transformers basically showed nothing iirc. but i am not sure that would work for a tv show.

The spot was a very short, very ambiguous trailer. The majority of it was a shot of the woods, presumably from the prologue, that fades to an almost muted black & white. Soundtrack of crows cawing in the background and Sean Bean (presumably) whispering "Winter is coming."
A few very, very brief smash cuts (probably only 5-6 frames each – that's 0.25 seconds, if that) of a few things. I've been able to spot:
- A raven flying to what appears to be Winterfell
- A swordfight, presumably the Dothraki at Dany's wedding
- Men on horseback with a clear Stark banner raised, probably riding out to meet the King's pt
- Another shot of the Dothraki dueling
- Ned and Bran riding side by side, presumably to Gared's execution. Ned is drawing Ice.
- Shot of a man in bed with a woman that appears to be undressing. You can't tell exactly who they are, but my guess is Cersei and Jaime in the broken tower.
- A quick shot of (I'm presuming) Will riding in the snow
- "Game of Thrones" superimposed over the trees in a red font
- A few horses charging, we see only the feet
- A few shots from the prologue, what might be Gared drawing his sword, and another of what appears to be Royce looking scared.
- "2011"
Again I emphasize that most of the shots were very very quick and it's pretty tough to discern any details. As for costumes, pretty much everyone was heavily cloaked in the outdoor shots.
It looked pretty cool, still.
