Filming begins today!

Today is the first “official” day of principal photography on Game of Thrones‘ first season! I put official in quotes there because I had heard that they may have done some under-the-radar filming late last week. My guess is they may have done some of the pilot reshoots on Friday.

At any rate, they are now officially under way. The next 30 weeks should be fun!

UPDATE: Here’s a little Twitter exchange between The_Rabbit and Miltos Yerolemou from a few minutes ago.

The_Rabbit Wondering what they are shooting today? #gameofthrones Any ideas?

mratlantis @The_Rabbit01 i have an idea….*chuckles teasingly*

The_Rabbit @mratlantis Grrrrr. Lucky you! Jelaous!!! (But we all love you so)

Hear Me Roar: Could it be one of Syrio’s scenes is also being shot on the first day? Maybe. It can simply mean Miltos knows the shooting schedule, though.

    Franny Bee,

Don’t forget Dinklage as Tyrion. I’m actually a little concerned, though, that neither Dinklage nor Bean has done much talking about their show. They’re the leads. You’d think they’d be more vocal about it.

Umm. I think that the people you see talking about their roles and tweeting about are more the minor actors who are not as big names. Sean has definitely been through a busy portion of his career with several projects in the hopper with “Black Death”, “Age of Heroes”, “Percy Jackson”, “Soldiers of Fortune”…busy, busy. For Sean, who is very private, interviews are business and that’s all.

    I admit I don’t know a lot about Dinklage.

I think the opposite is true. I think the leads are going to be quieter about the project, remaining a little distant, whereas the younger and less experienced actors are probably going to be more eager to talk about it.

In any case, it’s finally happening!

Nah, you’d expect just the opposite. Big stars tend to be very clothesmouthed about shows they are currently – seems to be part of being a professional at that level. Everyone is watching what you are saying so it’s better to say nothing.

By following every rumor/leaked image/etc., I sometimes wonder if I will have spoiled the show for myself, by the time it starts.

On the other hand, following the process of the creation of this TV show could end up being even more fun than watching the actual show itself, which will only be a mere 10 episodes (I could watch that in two days, easily).

After watching the first two episodes of Pillars of the Earth, I wonder more than ever what changes and deviations of the original we will see on the series.

I like PotE very much, but there were some changes that I cannot fathom to understand or justify.

I think we all should be wary of that: there WILL be things we don’t like or we’d like they’d do in some other way. It’s great to keep the expectations high, and so far we have solid foundations for that, but we should keep ourselves level-headed, so to speak.

i really think HBO is missing out on a huge opportunity. they should be partnering with WiC and doing regular feedback to the fans about the filming. have a PA at the show be in charge of organizing an entire “reach out to the hardcore fans” campaign. basically each day or so they could give a brief update of what ha been done, how things are going. maybe like a video blog. the person hosting the video blog would pretty much end up famous to us nerds and the possibilities are endless. interviews with actors and staff. little glimpses of sets or costumes. behind the scenes stuff. it would only need to be like 2 minutes a day on a different small topic and it would be a HUGE hit.

i nominate WiC for this paid position. come on HBO hire WiC as a fan consultant, give him a video camera and let him run a daily video blog!!!

I mean I know it’s a bunch of more minor characters from exception of Tywin, but it seems to me that if we haven’t heard casting announcements for these parts than it might mean that they have been cut. And to many cuts well ruin the series if you ask me. It just seems to me that alot of minor characters that made this universe so rich are still missing.

There’s lots of activity – lots of traffic arriving at and going in through the gates. Didn’t see anyone I knew but I was quite far away. The car park – which is huge – seems to be much fuller this morning with all sorts of vehicles, and notably, a number of big white coaches (to transport the cast somewhere this morning?). I hope to get another lookin before I go off for a week’s holiday on Wednesday.
Only other titbit – Sean Bean was in a famous Belfast watering-hole on Friday evening, being very friendly. I was there the next night! Bah! ”

From the casting page, there are already 56 roles cast (a huge cast by any standard)! Even if we include all your 12 and the other placeholders on the casting page we are still only have AT MOST yet uncast 25 roles – so 30%.

And seriously – Harwin and Hullen? I’ve read aGoT three times and had to look them up to recall who they were so… no. Extras definitely. If Rhaegar and Aerys are cast this season I’ll eat my hat – they never appear in the first book. The only flashback that seems likely at all is Tower of Joy.

    userj,

Agreed, Aerys flashback would occur when Jaime told Brienne what happened that day in the Thrown Room. If we get the Tower of Joy flashback (I hope GRRM persuades HBO to do it as that scene is a fan favorite) that will just involve Ned, Lyanna, Howland, Athur Dayne.
Concerning Tywin, Shae, Shagga, Chella, Timmet, the episode block that will include their roles will not be filmed till October at the earliest, so HBO has a couple of months to cast them.

Drove past Paint Hall on my way back from work – or tried to! They have closed the road! There’s a diversion in operation until 6.00 pm. Apparently some people were pumping their horns on the way past – maybe they saw some of the actors or something – so they’ve closed the road. Didn’t know you could just do that – I thought it had to be a Police decision – obviously not.
So if anyone in Belfast wants to wait around at about 6.00pm they’ll all be coming out!

Definitely feels like things are going to be a little quieter than they were during pilot filming. But I guess most of the pictures and information we got were from the location filming, so I guess it depends on how much filming on location they do.

I am jealous of the people following The Walking Dead. That show got the greenlight after GoT and has released a steady stream of content since – including pics of zombies, all the main cast members, and even a pretty decent trailer at comic-con. I think the show premieres later this year so they are definitely moving the production along much faster than GoT, so I guess that explains why they have more to show.

    tysnow,
I doubt Lyanna will be seen.

IIRC, ToJ flashback scene is just Ned, his men, and the kingsguard fighting outside the tower (the reader is aware Lyanna is inside but is left to wonder exactly what’s going on inside the tower).
If Lyanna’s in the series, it will probably just be her voice and maybe a vague faceshot whispering “promise me” while Ned’s waking up from a dream.

The exception being administrators (which is why it worked for me during internal testing). I’m trying to come up with an alternate solution, but for now just preface any spoilers with a *SPOILER* warning.

Maybe you can just use the quote tags and put SPOILER in them so at least the spoilers are in a obviously highlighted portion of the post.

    IE:

    SPOILERS:

Here is where I would write a whole bunch of spoilers and say blah blah blah

Scott, Yeah, that could work for now.

Due to the spoilers working stuff, and due to the fact that yesterday on set Sean Bean and NCW were present, all of sudden a crazy idea poped up in my head.

Could it be, that they were shooting the flashback scene with Ned and Jaime in the Throne room, after the sack of Kings Landing?

The Rabbit, but why would they need a female stand-in present?

Also someone (I forget who it was) made a good point, the “Jaime” that was on set may have been Jamie Sives. Which would mean they could have been filming a Ned and Jory scene instead.

    Winter Is Coming,

You could be right, but…the only two females (I am just staying close to the books, completely aware of the possibilty, that they can change something) could be Cat in scene with Ned and LF or Cersei in some scene in KL.

Found this tweet on a site called speculative horizons. http://speculativehorizons.blogspot.com/2010/07/few-words-on-hbos-game-of-thrones.html
I also noticed the Guardian article was up on Lena Hedey’s fan site.

    Lord Ned’s Head,

Thanks LNH, that was a nice article. An adequate response to the Guardian piece (and references to Adam’s blog and Winter-is-Coming!).
I wish every one who read the Guardian article would read this too before making their opinion on the series.
