With filming only days away now, it sounds like much of the cast is descending on Belfast as final preparations for shooting the first season of Game of Thrones commence. A report from the set indicates that Sean Bean is already there. Luke McEwan has tweeted that he is in Belfast. And this morning, Finn Jones tweeted from a plane, presumably on his way to Belfast International. It sounds like there is going to be a script read-through today. Based on the report that they are prepping and filming in three episodes blocks, I would guess this read-through will be for the first three episodes only.
Winter Is Coming: Well this certainly brings back some memories. Looking forward to next week and (hopefully) some interesting set reports!
UPDATE: Belfast resident silverjaime scouted out the Magheramorne quarry location today and came back with some photos of the Castle Black set under construction. You can clearly see what appears to be the winch elevator climbing up the face of the quarry.
UPDATE: Some more interesting tweets coming from Finn Jones and the other cast members. First, Jones tweets:
just seen a drawing of my tourney armor, it’s actually breathtaking, excited to wear the real thing!
Sophie Turner adds:
having sooooo much fun… good to be back :)
UPDATE: Another report from silverjaime, this one from the production office in Belfast.
Lots of comings and goings – a lot of swish cars and taxis pulling up and people getting out and some ( confusingly) getting back in 10 mins later. I don’t really know the actors to see but I recognised a few – Jamie Sives (looking gorgeous) Finn Jones, Rory McCann, Kristian Nairn ( I think – he was huge anyway), Josef Altin, Sophie Turner (very blonde and cute) and Derek Halligan with a big guitar case who went in and then came back out shortly after. Maybe it wasn’t his day. There were also about 4 girls all with dark hair but they were laughing and so on and I couldn’t see who was who. Everyone was carrying their stuff (scripts?) in boxes or M&S bags etc.
Winter Is Coming: If I could engage in some pure speculation for a moment. Everyone silverjaime listed are either in the tourney scene or the training at Castle Black (with the exception of Kristian, who may have actually been Conan). My guess is they are filming this stuff first. Castle Black stuff the first week of filming, tourney stuff the next week.

Let the fun begin. So if they are shooting in three episode blocks, I suppose they will shoot 3, 3, 3, and then the finale?

I'm guessing it will go episodes 2-4, 5-7, 8-10. The pilot reshoots probably aren't considered an "episode" in this case. They will have to work them in somehow though.

Oh, and Finn Jones is a cool dude. Had this Twitter exchange with him the other day:
FinnJones: worn out after another day of horse riding. started to joust today!! http://yfrog.com/nbyucj
WiCnet: @FinnJones That's an interesting looking horse you're riding there…
FinnJones: @WiCnet ha. believe it or not, It's a beast when it gets going.
WiCnet: @FinnJones Haha! Now I want footage of you and @conanstevens jousting on wheelbarrows for the DVD extras.
FinnJones: @WiCnet lol, I'll put it forward, complete with pitchforks as lances.
So if, somehow, this ends up on the DVDs as an extra, you all know who to thank. ;)

So if it is just 1-3, then it confirms that the Hand's Tourney will be in there. I suppose if they were going to do it over two episodes they could record the scenes for part #2 with episodes 1-3, rather than set everything out again?

Ah, forgot about the pilot. 2-4 would naturally include the whole thing. Sorry!

I’m on holiday from 28th so I’ll miss the first week or so ! However, the quarry is quite near my parents’ home so I did the dutiful daughter thing and then went and managed to take a few pix. The quarry is HUGE and all the roads are cordoned off except for GoT traffic so this is as near as I could get. No-one about at all except up at the construction. Interesting! They seem to be building Castle Black at the rockface. Maybe they're going to be using the rockface (enhanced to turn it white, I guess) as the face of the Wall so they won't need to greenscreen and CGI every single background shot? Makes sense.

Yes, the line of rock just above the castle is nearly straight along, so I presumed that was going to be the Wall. I can't really show you how HUGE it all was from the pix, and the castle is right at the back.

Interesting that they are getting the actors (well at least one actor) to practice Jousting as I would have thought any jousting would have been done with stuntmen.
I suppose they may want some shots of Finn riding and holding the Lance with his visor up but I would have thought any actual jousting (with the Visors down so faces not seen) would be stunt work.
@Mormegil99Quote Reply
It was all a part of the bet. GRRM would create a character based on Pat and kill him horribly. Upon further review, it looks like Pat WON the bet and this was his reward. :)

The only Pats listed on towerofthehand.com are Patrek Mallister and Patrek Vance. Neither really seem to have done anything memorable. Guessing if it is in fact a reference to something he just wrote that it's a Pat we don't know yet. Or possibly one of those two becomes vaguely prominent. Still, the death of a character seems a rather big spoiler for him to just come out and tell us, even if it's a minor one.
There are also a whole slew of Pates, but Pat seems like a rather strange and unnecessary abbreviation for that.

I noticed that he mentioned 10,000 BC and "inventing" accents, which may serve him well here. Of course, the fact that there will be a working Dothraki language should be of considerable help. Impressive list of credits, too!

DemokritosQuote Reply
If you're referring to having one director for three episodes making the most sense, then I will explain as well as I can, though briefly, why I disagree. On LOTR I think they would have as many as five different film crews running at once, each with its own director (though PJ oversaw the whole thing). On GoT they're probably filming in groups of three episodes in order to be efficient, being able to film scenes for episodes out of order. They're going to be able to get more done with having those responsibilities shared between more than one person, and with having different locations that use different actors, they can film scenes for different locations at the same time (or roughly the same time; they don't have to be filming simultaneously, but every scene is going to require a lot of prepoduction with designs, costumes, sets, special effects, stuntwork, actors being prepped). I expect it would be just too much work for one person, anyway.
JackSparrowQuote Reply
I have a question. Did HBO ever state that they will reshoot "some scenes" or did they just state that they will reshoot the pilot? I mean considering an large amount of changes wouldn't it be better to reshoot a whole pilot?

There was a group that found the Westeros boards that do full-contact jousting, like at Ren Fairs and such. Full-on jousting, no-holds-barred. Looked terribly dangerous.

Reading these posts, I get the feeling the cast is in place for the first few episodes, which means Myrcella, Tommen, Rickon, Jeyne, Beth, Ser Ilyn must have been cast by now, so where's the announcement.
Update: Just read GRRM's not-a-blog post, he mentions more casting announcements to come, but he is on a role with Dances and doesn't want to stop. I say don't stop George keep a rolling, let someone else post the casting news. If they've got any usable takes left they'll still use them. Saves money. Even if all they use is cutaway footage, they still won't be re-shooting every scene from scratch. The Dothraki dancing scenes, for example, will likely stay the same with only the reaction shots differing. Likewise, Bran's climbing scene will stay the same and only the end where he encounters his mother will be different.
My hope is that they add Jamie Sives in and at least put Hodor in the background leading a pony around or something.

@Mormegil99Quote Reply
From those Castle Black pics looks to me like several weeks or more till the set is complete. I think they are filming the summer time scenes first from Kings Landing, Kingswood, Castle Darry and Eastern Continent scenes in August, then the Northern Kingdom scenes from the 3 episode block toward the end (September) when it will be colder which would include Castle Black, Winterfell and any Kingsroad scenes taking place in the north. It wouldn't really matter for the next episode blocks as it will be getting colder by then, but since most of the scenes set in the south in the later episodes concern The Red Keep, Fleabottom, The Sept, Dungeons, and The Eyrie so they will be interiors or sets with the exception of the Dothraki Sea, the journey to the Vale and the battles. Filming the northern scenes in the fall and winter are ideal anyway and I can see them doing the first episode reshoots in Oct/Nov. since thats when the pilot was filmed last year.

He does sometimes grow a beard after a role where he's been clean-shaven, and vice versa – but I think this must be his LF look if he's filming next week and LF has a beard.

I'd imagine with a dye it would be really tough. With a wig I would think you could get the effect just by alternating silver and gold strands.
Will be interesting to see what they do, but I wouldn't be surprised with a silver/white.
NemoQuote Reply
Except that Isaac is now 9-10 months older than he was when he filmed the climbing scenes first time around, and that could be quite noticeable, so they may just decide to reshoot the whole scene.
The only scene at the moment I can see them keeping from the pilot totally unchanged is Ros's scene with Tyrion and Jaime, and from the sound of Esme's Tweets that she might be working again soon, even that sounds like it won't be the case (not much call for Ros in episodes 2 or 3, I'd have thought; Ned and Cat don't visit Chataya's until later on, probably in the second filming block). Otherwise pretty much everything else sounds like it needs to be reshot, either due to Cat/Dany or the kids being older or even just because Kit Harington (assuming he fulfilled the plan) has grown out his hair and doesn't need a wig and switching between the two means the continuity doesn't track.
Adam WhiteheadQuote Reply
Well, when you look at any artwork it's always silvery white. I don't think I've seen any Targaryen art with actual silver-gold hair. Like I said, I don't think it really exists (platinum is the closest I can imagine). Also, alternating strands might work (like you said)… but it might also look horrible (think cheesy highlights). I'm confident they'll nail it, though.

Not much to report but I did see a G&H minibus parked near my work this morning with a nice ‘Game Of Thrones’ sticker in the windscreen. It gave me a smile anyway! (I’ve been in that minibus loads of times with various different stickers in it’s windscreen over the years!)
BTW – I’ve had a good look at the Castle Black photos and the structures in the foreground are indeed the backs of sets with the front of a set in the back ground. From what I can see there is be some kind of courtyard ringed with three buildings. It’s likely that all the exteriors will be done here if they have just built facades with the interiors probably at the Paint Hall. It must be cool to stand in that courtyard and look up at the quarry wall! Maybe I’ll get to wear the black someday!
@SilverJaime – I take it you are a Belfast resident? Have you ever fancied trying out for an extra role? Or are you signed up already? If not, you could be our resident location stalker as you aren’t under the same restraints as me!

I hope they go more white than blonde, personally, because I think their coloring is supposed to really show that their is magic in their blood… blood of the dragons and all. I'm sure HBO will find a way to achieve this quality though without making it look cheap.
Violet eyes will be easy with contacts though, especially since Harry and Emilia both have blue eyes.

The Winter RoseQuote Reply
Yeah, it's really hard to tell from the photos but it definitely could be the backs of completed sets. They can do a lot with perspective and green screens to make it look like a sprawling castle complex.
The key thing with this set, and I think it is why they chose to build Castle Black here, is the quarry wall will allow for the lighting to be just right. I would imagine it would be hard to replicate the lighting you would get from living beneath an 800-foot wall, but this is probably as close as they could get.

OMG I don't want to be a stalker! No I didn't try out cos they wanted people with dark hair and my hair is reddish blonde. Which is why I don't really want to hang around much when they're filming unless there'd be a lot of people and I wouldn't be very visible, in case he thinks I'm stalking HIM!
I'm quite good at finding things out though – investigative journalism was toyed with as a career at one time…..

@ Silverjaime – Who told you they only wanted people with dark hair? My hair is reddish/blonde! There are all kinds of different hair colours in Extras NI. I would be very surprised if you were prevented from signing up because of hair!
And who cares if someone you know is in the show? Unless they have a restraining order out against you! You have as much right to be on the show as him!
And maybe ‘Stalking’ is too strong. There is a guy on Gallifrey Base who travels to all of the DW locations and posts photos online. These photos are taken from places where the sets are visible to the public so no rules are being broken. It sounds like you could be our GOT version! This is exactly how DOCTOR WHO is shot. Several episodes (ranging from two to four) are shot in the same block. The same director covers several of those episodes. During the David Tennant years, the format was that one director would direct 2-3 episodes (not consecutive ones, they'd be broken up for transmission) in a row, then someone else would take over, with four blocks per season. One block would be longer and incorporate a fourth episode, usually the 'Doctor-lite' episode ('Love and Monsters', 'Blink', 'Turn Left') where another director could film another episode separately with minimal to no involvement of the main cast.
It's entirely possible this is the process, or a derivation of it, is being used on THRONES.
In addition, I believe we were only told that Brian Kirk was directing two episodes. I took that to mean 'at least' two episodes and it was possible he'd do more.
