WiC posters look as though they strike gold again – though not without a little help from Elio of Westeros, who got the whole ball rolling with his first guess for Shagga. Note that these have not been confirmed, and are only our best guesses thus far. Here’s who we have, in order of the clues presented:
Lalor Roddy as Catspaw: Roddy was in The Guards, played Garda Royle in Summer of the Flying Saucer, was in Boy Eats Girl, was in As the Beast Sleeps, Murphy’s Law (because anything that can go wrong will go wrong), The Escapist (Kavalier and Clay). I think he also played a guard in the Michael Fassbender movie Hunger (though he could have been a prisoner too – not sure).
Credit Shinyteapot if we’re right.
Simon Lowe as Wineseller: WiC poster Crazy Diamond said: “He’s not simple (Simon), not high (Lowe), been to the beach (was in something called Beach Boys), has crossed the Mersey (was in the TV show Mersey Beat), has seen his share of doctors (has been in many episodes of Doctors), and once went down in flames, oh the humanity (reference to the Hindenburg, and he’s been in a TV show of the same name).”
But credit Veelo for the original find. Good work!
Mark Lewis Jones as Shagga: Jones is Welsh, has played a number of cop roles, and was Mr. Hogg in Master and Commander. Not sure about the Nobleman part (King Uther Pendragon is no mere noble), but likely Jones has played one sometime during his storied career. A little older and wiser than I pictured Shagga, but … that’s why they call it acting. Of all the guesses, this one I am most unsure about, but I’m sticking with it for now.
Credit Ran, King o’ the Westeros boards if this pans out.
Clive Mantle as Greatjon Umber: He’s not the guy who had more dingers (home runs, i.e. Maris), or even the one who chased him all summer (Mickey Mantle). Thanks to Ace for his baseball breakdown. Mantle played James Martin in the 2005 version of Poseidon Adventure. Mantle is also the tallest actor at 6’ 5″ to have played Little John in the Robin Hood TV series.
Credit Maxwell James if this is right. Looks right to me!
Fire And Blood: Triple stoked that they got the Greatjon. Now give us Roose Bolton and the Mirri Mad Maegi … and we have ourselves A Game of Thrones.

Um… do we actually know that the roles are wineseller and catspaw? Or is this what everyone has just assumed? Because I thought that the “man with no man” hint suggested wildlings, the ones that attack Bran.

I’m a big fan of Robin of Sherwood. It’s great to see Clive Mantle here (though his Robin costar Ray Winstone would be a great Bron). One thing though–on the DVD extras, he kind of bags the whole production. I don’t think it will interfere with his role as Greatjon, but it is disappointing if he thinks he’s an actor above the genre.

youandwhosearmy,
Ha, that could be true. Men with no names … the Wildling thieves who attacked Bran. Could be, could be … we may need to retract a little. Let’s wait and see.

That short movie starring Mark Lewis Jones posted on Westeros.org is quite awesome.
Here’s the link in case you haven’t seen it there.
I’m sort of hoping for the guy that GRR will post it on his blog too.

Great job as always WiC’ers! I’ve seen Mark Lewis Jones in a few things before and I think he’s a good choice for Shagga. It’s funny. Recently in a Doctor Who episode, ‘The Pandorica Opens’, he played a small part as commander in the Roman legion. I don’t think the part’s even listed on his imdb as he only had several lines, but when I saw him I thought he’d be a good fit for GoT. :)

Ahimsa Kerp,
As long as he doesn’t let it show and plays the role to the best of his ability, it doesn’t really matter if he hates the show and the genre and everything about it. Alec Guinness hated doing Star Wars; doesn’t change the fact that his Obi-Wan Kenobi is beloved the world over.

I agree that we may be jumping the gun. GRRM did not write “man with no name”, he wrote “man with no man”… twice.
That suggests men with no allegiance to me (e.g. Black Brothers or Wildlings).
Just saying…
LexQuote Reply
Nevermind, it appears GRRM has corrected his double-typo.

Great news if true. I grew up watching Clive Mantle in the Robin of Sherwood series and always liked his performance as Little John.
And liked Nick Brimble playing the same role too, if only they could get him to join the production as well (maybe Bronze Yohn Royce ?)

Hear Me Roar,
Nevermind, GRRM has edited his clue. It used to say “man with no man” and it now says “man with no name”. This probably makes the assassins the most likely candidates again.

Damn it, I looked at all the Mantles and somehow didn’t spot Little John.

By the way, am I the only one who think of Sandor, Gregor, Hodor and Greatjohn walking into a Belfast pub, there might be a lull in the conversation?

Personally, I think Mark Lewis Jones looks great for Shagga. His eyes have a wild, barbaric look.

Congrats everyone for the strong guesses!
What a great Greatjon Clive Mantle would be! he’s just as perfect as Brendan Gleeson would have been!
As for Mark Lewis Jones as Shagga, well, that’s not how I pictured Shagga at all, but then again, I’m not sure I remember how he’s described in the book so I probably made him up in my head, kind of.
Thanks to Jan Oda for the short movie link.
I really like his voice. He shall make a fearsome Shagga :)

Great finds, everyone! Don’t know how you do it, I am just lousy at it.
I love the look of the new guys (assuming they’re all correct, and they seem to be.)
Incidentally, the Robin Hood in that clip resembles a long-haired early Scott Baio. :)

The Rabbit,
a “making of” crew, that makes me gitty all over. Maybe we will see some footage sooner then we think, maybe this fall (wishful thinking)

So happy we will have a Greatjon in S1! It’s looking like Roose Bolton will appear in S2 and Ser Kevan in either S2 or S3. I wonder if they are going to do flashback characters such as Lyanna Stark in S1?
The next bit of casting I am looking forward to is Mirri Maz Duur. I know she is a small role but what a character…..
winterqueenQuote Reply
HouseUmber,
Yeah, they will have soon a lots of material for all sort of the promotion.
I hope that we won t wait too long for first glimpses of these.

The Rabbit,
Wow, 35 percent of the way through ASOS. Luckily GRRM isnt on set, cause after the reading the red wedding, Conan might have walked up and punched GRRM right in the face. (that is what I wanted to do for 24 hours after reading it)
Now, I couldn’t/wouldn’t want to have it any other way…

You people amaze me with your detective work. Nice job! I’m proud of myself when I figure out the character Martin is referring to. lol
Are most of you British? I wonder how much of it has to do with being familiar with actors in British films/television. Though with Netflix I have no excuse any more for missing the great British shows.
Anyway, I concur with winterqueen. Getting to see Robb’s confrontation with the Greatjon is one of my most anticipated aspects of seeing book one on screen. I’d hate for them to push Roose back, though. Surely there are character cuts that can be made that don’t have such a dramatic effect on the course of the storyline. I’m in favor of introducing those sorts as early as is feasible.

I. LOVE. The Greatjon.
I had just assumed that he wasn’t going to be in the series, I am SO EXCITED about this.

Re: Conan Stevens’s update
Once again, the Mountain doesn’t neglect us poor starving little fans. Conan, you’re the best!
lol at the bit about him having to duck in the costume department trailor and not being able to see more than his upper legs and waist in the mirror!
The making-of footage of his practice with Rory McCann is most interesting. If it doesn’t end up being used as pre-release promotional stuff, than it’s definitely a must for the DVD extras.
Oh, and the link to the The Devils Horsemen Stunt Team is also much appreciated!
I really hope his carrer gets the kick off he deserves from this. He’s worked so hard!

Browsing through the 192 carriages of the Devils Horsemen Stunut Team, I’m wondering which one they will use and enhance with CGI for Cersei when/if they reshoot that scene from the pilot.

George just updated his blog confirming the actors and parts. He also added the actress for Masha Heddle.
mikeQuote Reply
mike,
Alright, we even have the innkeep who gets strung up to be crow food. He didn’t mention Ser Kevan in that list of who’s left to be cast.
dizzy_34Quote Reply
Confirmed! And Masha Heddle too.
I’m thrilled I got one, will be happy all evening :D

dizzy_34,
But he did end with “and more.” I like to think there is still hope for Kevan and Roose in S1. Ciaran Hinds as Lord of the Dreadfort FTW.

I’m a bit surprised we are getting Marsha Heddle. I wonder if there is a chance of getting my favorite squire, Podrick Payne for S1? We really don’t need Pod for S1 but I would like to see him all the same. I really hope Pod is saved from Lady Stoneheart’s “justice”. Roose Bolton and Ser Kevan Lannister are a coin toss for S1 at this point.

Is that the first confirmation that Rickon will be in the cast? I had been wondering if he might be cut.

:( missed another one. Good job, everyone!

good news indeed. We need him. If only for Shaggy dog and Osha’s fate. :)
NymeriaQuote Reply
Maxwell James,
Ever since Martin’s hint a few weeks back that Asha could possible be meeting Oshoa I’ve been thinking that maybe even Rickon will have a part to play in the conclusion of the story. Lets not forget that he is still a Stark with a wolf and, just like bran, he to had a vision of his father that sent him down into the crypts.
HouseUmberQuote Reply
winterqueen,
Of course we need a Marsha! The image of a skull with those blood red teeth is just too good to give up. :)

And here is my updated cast gallery. Man, Amok is awesome; I can’t believe how many character portraits he’s done.
LexQuote Reply
Vohdre,
Its not all that bad, lets see
Ed – dead
Cat – Undead
Robb – dead
Sansa – possibly losing herself in new identity
Bran – crippled, but gaining cool powers
Arya – Trying to lose her identity to become faceless
Rickon – on the run
Benjen – ?? maybe dead, maybe undead (wight or coldhands)
Jon Snow (half stark regardless of who his parents might be) – Lord Commander of a small army
Ok, they are in bad shape but they can still make a come back
