It sounds like they may be filming the tourney, if not today, very soon. Thanks to silverjaime, we know the tourney scene is going to be filmed on the grounds of Shane’s Castle, on the banks of a nearby river. It seems they will be shooting tourney scenes for almost a week and a half. It sounds like this is going to be one of the biggest shoots of the first season.
Oh, and we also got this epic sounding tweet from Luke McEwan just now:
Luke_McEwan Is watching the mountain that rides fight the hound. I have never seen 2 bigger men.
UPDATE: It sounds like filming for the tourney will begin next week and will likely last the whole week.

So does that mean Rast will be introduced at the tourney scene?

It means one of two things, 1) McEwan is doing combat training and is watching while Stevens and McCann practice their fight, or 2) he is on set watching them film the tourney scenes because, well… why the hell not? I’m leaning towards number one though.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Oh, my! And we even got “one of our own” on the scene. Yes, epic is the word! I really hope they make a big deal out of the tourney in the episode it’ll be in. And i want a “super-ultra-badass” battle between the brothers! If they make it a little cheezy/macho/over-the-top aka the good old 80s early 90s action movies with Stallone etc, that would be perfect!

So it turns out they were filming in a field of willows at the Leslie Hill Farm in the Ballymoney area

Nice find. I wonder who it was that tipped off the Ballymoney Times to the fact that they were shooting in their town? Hmm…. ;)
A field of willows, huh? Wonder what they were shooting there? I’m still thinking it was scenes from the trek back to King’s Landing.

That’s right. Forgot about you being booked as “King’s Landing Peasant” as well. Either way, this tourney shoot seems pretty big.
Nymeria,
Fixed the bolding bug and I think I know what causes it now, so hopefully I can eliminate it for good. I removed the Twitter updates as it wasn’t updating. I will fix that later today, but until then I removed it.
Also I wouldn’t be too sure about Leslie being the one that contacted the paper. I’m thinking it is someone most of you are familiar with… ;)

Very exciting news! The Tourney of the Hand was one of my favorite parts on AGOT. Wish I lived in Northern Ireland and could be an extra.
Since they have a full tourney set/stuntmen/extras/actors ready to go, I was wondering if they will film Ned’s dream/flashback of the Tourney of the False Spring when Prince Rhaegar crowns Lyanna Stark the queen of love and beauty? I would LOVE to see Rhaegar and Lyanna but will HBO think they are important enough to include for S1? If we get a S3, they will need to do another tourney filming for Meera’s story of the Knight of the Laughing Tree. Does anyone know if they are casting Prince Rhaegar and Lady Lyanna for S1? The Lyanna flashback “Promise Me, Ned” scenes are important to Ned’s storyline. I would think a Lyanna casting would be a sure thing, but I could be wrong.

So Ran from Westeros says Owen Teale is a recast and he will soon announce more details.
Please, not Jeor Mormont. I mean, Owen Teale seems awesome and even has the look, but I don’t want to lose James Cosmo!

It could mean three possibilites IMO: LC Mormont, A. Thorne or Illyrio.

Best news this week, can’t wait for more twitters, posts and spy pics in the coming days. I would love the Clegane bros fight to be similar to the one in El Cid during the tourney scene, but more brutal.
I was so liking the idea of Owen as Donal, perhaps Donal was cast and just hadn’t been announced yet and thus this is a recast.
TysnowQuote Reply
Tysnow,
small chance of that!
NymeriaQuote Reply
sjwenings,
A six-day shoot means that the Tourney could well take most, if not all of one whole episode. Action also takes much longer to shoot than dramatic scenes, so for that it’s not surprising either. I remember being told when I was interning for a production company that was then just finishing up production on the movie “Money Train,” that big action sequences were taking them a whole day to do only a quarter of a page to a half a page from the script.
All the action that can be summed up in a paragraph or two will sometimes be fleshed out into something much bigger on screen, most famously, in the “Ben Hur” script is a sentence something like, “They have a chariot race, Ben Hur wins.” Also, they can technically complicated that they need to spend all day setting up before the shot actually gets done. Again, the aforementioned chariot race in Ben Hur took 5 weeks to shoot a 20-minute sequence (all of it done by the 2nd unit, apparently!).

Seems too young for LC Mormont to me… Wouldn’t Illyrio be more likely since we already think that part is going to be recast? He seems Jowly enough.

If Teale is a recast, I would not be surprised if it’s Jorah Mormont, even. He’d be very right for that role.

That’s too bad, I liked Derek Halligan’s look for Thorne.
But hey, Owen Teale is definitely a good addition to the cast so I’m not complaining.
NymeriaQuote Reply
Yeah I doubt it’s the Old Bear… Thorne or Jorah seem likely but are they even filming Dany stuff yet?
dizzy_34Quote Reply
Nymeria,
Well it appears Owen is quite enjoying himself lately playing the bad roles, with his most recent stage performance as a psycho and then a Nazi in his latest film, so now he can chaulk up a conniving, sniveling, scumbag wannabe knight to his resume.
TysnowQuote Reply
Agreed. Halligan really looked the part. But looking on the bright side, I’m glad Teale will have some lines and some conflict to work with, and won’t have his talents wasted on a more 1-note character like Ilyn Payne.

Hello,
I just found out, my mate is going to be a “stark Guard” and will be filming all of next week on this show. He won’t tell me anything about it, but just the thought of it sounds ace. What is a stark guard? Are there many of them? If this is a tourney (tournament???) wil he be fighting or something like that? IT would be so cool to be in something like that.
JealousGuyQuote Reply
JealousGuy,
The Starks are a noble family. A Stark Guard is just that, one of the guards employed by the Starks. Most likely he will just be standing around (in a cool uniform). The only fighting at the tourney is done by knights.
LexQuote Reply
A “stark guard” actually means stark naked. He is a fierce warrior of a dark ages society that fights naked with rocks and sticks. I’m just kidding, you won’t get to see your buddy naked. “Stark guard” actually refers to the use of light and shadow, as your friend will most likely be darkly lit, but will stand in stark contrast to the (most likely) cgi background, which will glow like the surface of the sun. It’ll be kinda like the last fifteen minutes of ‘Sunshine’.
JackSparrowQuote Reply
Cool…and thank goodness he won’t be in the bufty….that would not be a good look for him! So there is loads of guards then? HA! So he can’t try bluffing that he is something important or special. He has been telling me that he can’t possibly tell us any details of his outfit or what he is at. But should be fun looking out for his red hair in a sea of shadow once this is on the box!
JealousGuyQuote Reply
JealousGuy,
Don’t listen to Jack Sparrow, he’s just joking around! :)
Like I said, the Starks are one of the main noble families in this medieval world. Sean Bean plays Eddard Stark. Your friend will be one of his household guards, maybe even standing right behind him or another Stark family member. He’ll definitely get to see some really cool stuff on set!
As for the secrecy, is this something he was told on set? All the extras are being very respectful of the secrecy, but I’m wondering if they are given specific instructions or even made to sign contracts.

Weather update: Late next week is not going to be good weather time for Ireland according to Weatherunderground, some of the computer models show a strong North Atlantic storm building with tropical strom force winds, that should arrive late Wednesday or Thursday, anyway it will be a very windy and rainy 3-4 days, clearing by Sunday. I checked the local weather stations over there in Ireland, and they don’t predict anything major, just rain showers late Wed-Sat.
Well they could shoot outdoor stormy seas shots for Pike and Dragonstone (Birth of Dany) and archive them for later use. A good director and crew utilizes cool weather phenom to give some scenes an extra cool factor.
What scene would look cool for them to film in stormy conditions, even if the scene was not scheduled.
TysnowQuote Reply
Tysnow,
Probably too early to shoot it, but the scene where Ned is “chastized” by Jaime would be cool on a stormy night.
Avalanche3319Quote Reply
Phoenix_torn,
Too true.
Avalanche3319,
Agreed, bad events happening during a storm are one of those cliches that still looks cool and just never gets old.
SJGIMQuote Reply
Avalanche3319,
Good idea, if the actors and extras are available and the set already built, the director has perhaps two maybe three days to schedule that scene inbetween the others for this block. They can shoot it and archive it, in the golden age of Hollywood, the great directors would do this type of adjust the schedule and shoot while there is unusual weather occuring that would add to a scene. Then when the weather passed they would go back to the set shooting schedule.
TysnowQuote Reply
SJGIM,
Definitely, I mean it would be awesome to have rain dripping off their armor, capes flapping in the wind, which howls in the background. The fighting ensues with blood and water mixing on the cobblestone avenues or if dirt streets turning it muddy. I can see Ned trapped under horse with the bloody water flowing around him as he watches his men fall to flashes of lightning.
Although prior to this we see him take down a couple of Lannister’s. The audience should get a taste of what Ned can do in battle even if its for just 30 seconds, afterall its our only opportunity minus the Tower of Joy.

Link to the Aug 25th forecastmodel, go to post 1588 you can see the storm approaching Ireland, the Big L with all the isobar rings circling it.
TysnowQuote Reply
Tysnow,
For those wanting to read the model forecast pic, if you look at the model you will see a box with the word Gale inside it near the top of the approaching storm, that means Gale Force Winds, which are over 33 knots (42 mph) to 47 knots (62 mph), so Ireland could be in for some extremely windy and of course raining days late in the week.
TysnowQuote Reply
This GPS weather model link is a good way to watch the approaching weather systems for Ireland. Once you go to the main page, click on the box that encompasses the North Atlantic, then on next page click on the box the includes Ireland. The next page has different tabs, the first one is the GPS wind speed which is the default model run. You can use the previous, next or animate buttons to forward for a week through the weather model forecast run, or backwards to today. There are other models for pressure, wave height and precipitation.
TysnowQuote Reply
Three words: Tower of Joy.
Don’t remember if it was raining during the scene in the books, but I always pictured it dark and stormy, with the only light being bright flashes of lightning. Very atmospheric.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Tysnow,
It would look pretty awesome, I can see it now. Especially if they could position it so the wind was blowing toward Jaime, causing his cape to billow behind him, making his approach that much more intimidating. We could have the crimson water mixing with the crimson colors of the lannister men, and having an opportunity to see Ned fight is great. (Personally I am hoping for flashbacks in which we will get to see a little more action, although this will be difficult with how different some characters are supposed to look).
SJGIMQuote Reply
If I were the director I would definitly use this storm on wednesday for shooting Sandor & Sansa “little chat” after the tourney.

Well looks like the Tourney filming is good for all week, the weather GFS model now has that storm taking a right turn tomorrow and heading for France instead of Ireland.
But there is hope on the horizon for a real nasty blow in over a week if Danielle heads toward Ireland, to early to tell atm though. The production crew needs to keep that storm in the back of their minds just in case and perhaps if the cards fall right there will be some really cool weather to shoot some scenes in within 10-12 days, of course only if the storm is not to strong, otherwise its too dangerous.
TysnowQuote Reply
Tysnow: WiC’s Weather Man! ;)
Thanks for keeping an eye on the radar screen, man. I would say, all things considered, I’d rather the storm miss them so they can film the scenes they need to film and don’t get behind schedule.
However, if it does hit Belfast, I hope they make good use of it.
