From all accounts, it sounds like they have moved out of the Paint Hall and are filming on location during this second week of principal photography for Game of Thrones. First we get this report from super-spy silverjaime:
According to security on site this morning – they’re not filming at the Paint Hall today, so maybe we’ll get some info or pix on location. Two of the actors (Jason and Jamie) drove past me coming out of the car park heading for Larne? Antrim? at 7.15 am.
Second, comes this report from commenter Steve O:
Location today is Ballymoney.
These lucky TV people get to all the exotic locations
Winter Is Coming: Just taking a quick look at some info on Ballymoney and I noticed one of the features of the area is a large river running through the town. Might they be filming the scenes with Mycah today?

Damn! I am getting really excited here!
At first when I heard that they did a lot of re-casts and re-shoots I was a bit bummed. But after some of the recent news I have to say it is the right decision. Hopefully there will pop out a pilot soonish :)

I’m just hoping for enough filming for an interesting trailer asap! the others, the wall, kings landing/winterfell and a few of the mains on full costume and full mail on!.

Wonder if we’ll see these trees / hedges that are in the Ballymoney area. Me like :)
JackieQuote Reply
Somehow i haven’t really thought about that.
How big do you people reckon the chances of seeing a trailer before filming for season 1 has ended? Is it usual for HBO to do that?
sjweningsQuote Reply
Jackie, yeah, I saw that too. Could make for an interesting setting. Even better is what those trees look like at dusk.
sjwenings, I would say it is very likely. HBO has done it before, Boardwalk Empire got their first full trailer after filming had only been going for about a month or so. I still think NYCC is going to be the time we will get our next trailer.

Someone should tell them to drop into “A Flash in the Pan” for lunch, it’s a great wee chippie. :)

Wow, those trees look beautiful. I guess it is not too hard to change the asphalt on the road into mud with CGI. There are more than enough road trips in season one to need a couple of shots like this. Or maybe they are there for some entirely different shots.

The River Bann is very picturesque, I have been googling images, here are a few images I found, very Riverlandish and this one picture perfect and
another great shot, I can see them filming at numerous locations along this river.

tysnow,
I’ve been googling as well, found some more nice pics (loved the ones you found, will add them later – gotta run now).

Those just scream Weirwood to me.

gofalcons,
I thought that too, can just imagine Sean sitting at the foot of one of those cleaning a sword :)

I wonder if they will film around Lough Neagh, using it as a backdrop for the God’s Eye.
tysnowQuote Reply
I was reading more about Logh Neagh when I noticed another N.I river that feeds it named Blackwater, this is a gorgeous river, this Blackwater photo is awesome too.

Looks like Godswood material to me! :)
LexQuote Reply
Jackie,
If these were used as a Godswood, they would have to close the road, bring brush and small trees in the give it a thicker look. It would be cheaper to just use one of these trees as a template and build one on a set.

While diiging for more pics came across Lismore Castle, this would be a great location for filming, I could see them using the courtyard for filming.

These pics are great, and very exciting. I have not been to Ireland, but I am beginning to see why they chose it. Can’t wait for 2011!

Jackie,
I was thinking the Dark Hedges could be used for the Ambush at the Whispering Wood, if you google them and just look at all the pics in different lighting and directions, it would just make an absolutely breathless locale for the fight. They could close off the road, install a tarp then dirt/grass over it so it had the appearance of a country medieval road, then shoot. I am thinking just before dawn, that waythey can get some cool lighting from the sunrise at the end of the fight.

tysnow,
Like your idea very much.

tysnow, the only problem I have with that idea is there isn’t a forest surrounding the road. It’s just open fields once you get past the row of trees. In the books, if I remember correctly, they are only able to ambush Jaime’s troops because they could stay hidden amongst the trees. They might be able to digitally add a forest, but that could be more work than it is worth.
The Dark Hedges is a great location though. They should definitely make use of it at some point.

Even the name Dark Hedges sounds perfect!
LexQuote Reply
Winter Is Coming,
I have thought of that also WiC, I am of the thought to let Green Forks be the biggie, and Whispering Wood more intimate, with Jaime and perhaps a contingent of 100-200 horsemen. The setting is night and they are not going to expect an ambush as they believe the enemy are miles away. It would be not be difficult to hide a hundred archers among the brush and Robb’s calvary behind the trees, perhaps 20-30 yards from the road, Jaime will not see them, and if I remember, he did not send out scouts or skirmishers because of his arrogance. So the scene would work if they used those perimeters.
WiC EDIT: Spoilered some stuff for you.

Here is a Hi Res pic of The Dark Hedges just zoom in.

I gotta say, even without many spy reports or set photos it’s SUCH a good feeling, knowing that filming is happening (and in it’s second week already!).
Compared to the last few months of tense waiting, it’s just so good to know that it’s actually happening, that the cast is all there, and that it’s being recorded on film!

Jackie,
That shot of the road is beautiful. They could cover that paved road with dirt and it would make a lovely shot for a section of the King’s Road (or some other track).
BrudeQuote Reply
Brude,
I don’t think Cersai’s Wheelhouse would make it under those trees to be honest :-)

Someone should contact D&D and mention that Jackie here at WiC found a great locale to shoot a scene. The producers need to move fast before the spies for Camelot and Borgias decide like us that this a great location for a scene and take dibbs on it.
For those that think the GoT people have already thought about this, I have learned never to assume, as the Dark Hedges may have slipped through the cracks and have not come up in discussion with the scouting staff.
tysnowQuote Reply
tysnow,
I forgot the Borgias is filming in Eastern Europe, so ignore that part of my previous comment.
tysnowQuote Reply
I know I said I could see Sean sitting under one of the trees, but I don’t really expect it to be used as a Weirwood. However it would be lovely to see some armored knights riding down the road with banners flying. Maybe it could be used as an establishing shot for the Kings Road. That way it would be recognised in later eps when other characters are traveling the road.
p.s. just in case, I didn’t take the pic I only found it via Google. :)
pps. LOL at the location comment. I think HBO are well ahead of us ;)
JackieQuote Reply
Probably safe from the Camelot people as well unless they have a deal to film in the UK and not just the Republic of Ireland.
Still can’t see it being used for the Kings Road unless we have a scene of all the trees being chopped down so the Royal Wheelhouse can get past.
Could well be used as the backdrop to something else though, maybe the Hound chasing M**** if we actually see that and not just the aftermath as in the book.
