George R. R. Martin has new clues up at his blog, this time for two more roles.
The bloody lash knows what it’s like to be dead. He’s met his waterloo and been a casualty, and seen his share of apparitions too. The horny-headed hammerhand is older than you might have thought, but too young to need a pacemaker, though he might have ridden on the ferry with Gerry. Another friend of our kraken’s sister, he knows the doctor and the wizard too. Damned if he doesn’t play what he calls football (not the real kind).
Winter Is Coming: I expect these to be solved in, oh, about 10 minutes. The clock starts…. NOW!
UPDATE: Our best guesses right now are Joe Dempsie as Gendry and Elyes Gabel as Jhogo. Awaiting confirmation from GRRM for both, but they both fit the clues fairly well.
UPDATE: While we await word from GRRM, we get confirmation directly from HBO on another casting. My hunch was correct, Dar Salim has been cast as Qotho.

Pssst, there’s already comments about this on the Mountain that rides post.
In summary so far we think:
#Philip Martin Brown was suggested by a reader on Not a Blog, and his wikipedia page does list Waterloo Road, Casualty and Docters.
#Hrny-handed hammerman = Gendry = this guy:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Dempsie
With help and suggestions from: Jackie Mcpherson, OzXaro, GrimTuesday and Harriet.
Hope I didn’t forget anyone
Jan OdaQuote Reply
Gary Oliver for Gendry thanks to input from others in the last topic.
Jackie MacPhersonQuote Reply
(From the discussion that was impatiently started on the Mountain that Rides post)
Yeah I thought the same… And maybe even a little ser Kevan, but not Gared as someone suggested. Still not sure what prominent bowman hasn’t been cast yet…
Jan OdaQuote Reply
OK, I can’t find any more info on Gary age etc just that he was in Merlin, doctors and Casualty. Joe looks good.
Jackie MacPhersonQuote Reply
Jan Oda,
Obviously that went wrong, the quote should have read “I have no idea who a “bloody bowman” is in the first book. But looking at that guy, he screams “Roose Bolton” to me. ”
It’s late here. *rolls eyes at self*
Jan OdaQuote Reply
OK…self in 1973….probably not Gary Oliver then! ;)
Jackie MacPhersonQuote Reply
Isn’t there a character who has the house sigil of a blood bowman?
MikeSQuote Reply
MikeS,
Just run through the Westeros roll and I can’t see a bloody bowman, or even a bowman. A few bows, but nothing from book 1.
Were there any bowmen on the way to the Eyrie?
HarrietQuote Reply
Could it be Anguy? He has a very brief cameo in book 1.
Maxwell JamesQuote Reply
Roose Bolton’s penchant for flaying people might account for the “bloody” part, plus the first part of his last name is a term for crossbow projectile.
I think Philip Martin Brown is playing Lord Roose Bolton!
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Maybe our bowman could be Anguy (sp?) that archer from the tourney who appears again in future books the one with a lemon cape…just a guess
Quiet WolfQuote Reply
Could the “bloody” bowman refer to one of Drogo’s Bloodriders? I forget which one was “The Bow.”
NemoQuote Reply
Josh Parker,
That makes sense to me…
Jan OdaQuote Reply
The only bowman I can think of is Anguy who wins the archery competition. He later joins the brotherhood without banners.
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
Huh, if Joe Dempsie is the one playing Gendry he is… way older than book Gendry. This kinda makes shipping him with Arya rather icky.
T. R.Quote Reply
Nemo,
It’s Quoro.
EvQuote Reply
Ev,
You meant Qotho.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Yep I meant Qotho ^^
EvQuote Reply
I really like the bloodrider notion from Nemo
Quiet WolfQuote Reply
so was the Bowman in Spooks, Casualty and Waterloo Road?
Jackie MacPhersonQuote Reply
(Spoilers) Anguy does indeed appear in the first book. Other options include Poxy Tym (who doesn’t get mentioned by name until later but could be in it from the first book), Balon Swann and Jalabhar Xho . And probably some others.
NinepennyQuote Reply
That seems to be some kind of reference to the rock band, Gerry and the Pacemakers .
LexQuote Reply
Qotho seems like a good candidate.
NinepennyQuote Reply
T. R.,
GRRM did say that the person was older than we might have thought. Joe Dempsie seems like a lock for this, he fits the clues perfectly.
Looking at some pics online, he looks quite young in a lot of them, but yeah, no shipping for him and Arya unless they recast her in a few years, after she leaves Westeros for training.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
Also, I took “the doctor” to be a reference to Doctor Who, and “the wizard” to possibly someone from Harry Potter or LOTR (i.e. Ian McKellen, Michael Gambon).
So, someone who’s worked with Dr. Who and Dumbledore/Gandalf?
LexQuote Reply
Are we sure it’s only for two roles? “Another friend of our kraken’s sister” seems like description of a third role or maybe I just don’t get this part. (Since the only Greyjoy in this season is Theon)
ArctorQuote Reply
For Dany and Drogo’s wedding, “Qotho gave them a double curved dragonbone bowQotho gave them a double curved dragonbone bow.” Sounds like a bloody bow-man to me.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
Arctor,
It’s a clue for Dempsie to be Gendry. Dempsie played in one episode of “Lily Allen and Friends” so he’s a friend of “Theon”‘s sister.
EvQuote Reply
SteveThePirate2,
All completely valid points and it likely is him. It’ll be interesting to see how they deal with the age change as Gendry can be a little, let’s say, naive in the books.
T. R.Quote Reply
I’ll take the Paul Gude approach, throw them in until something sticks ;)
Raza Jaffrey for Qotho, although I can’t find his Waterloo other than an appearance in Sharpe ;)
Jackie MacPhersonQuote Reply
GRRM just changed “bloody bow” to “bloody lash”. so… was Aggo the whip?
NemoQuote Reply
Lex,
the wizard could also be a reference to Merlin.
SteveThePirate2, Quotho might be a bowman, but etnics wise I think this won’t be a match. Or at least, not with any of the actors posted so far.
I still think Philip Martin Brown is the best match so far for the bowman actor, though I haven’t found any show that could account for the apparitions he played in.
Jan OdaQuote Reply
The “wizard” reference refers to Dempsie’s appearance on the TV show “Merlin.” He was on shows called “Doctors” and “Doctor Who.” He appeared on Lily Allen’s 2008 special “Lily Allen and Friends,” and of course he was in “The Damned United” a movie about a football (soccer) team.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
I just saw that Joseph Dempsie has been on the Lily Allen show, in Dr. Who, and in Merlin. Also just saw that someone mentioned him above.
LexQuote Reply
Jan Oda,
Since GRRM just changed “bow” to “lash,” it does make Qotho seem unlikely.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
Also a football fan. Joseph Dempsie sounds like a good bet to me, although I have no idea what the role is.
LexQuote Reply
Haggo was the whip.
NinepennyQuote Reply
Jan Oda,
Sleepy Hollow. I’d say there were some…apparitions in that.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Jhogo got the whip.
Ingemar SvenssonQuote Reply
Ninepenny,
Aother website says that Jhogo is the Whip?I don’t have my books here so I can’t check a hard copy.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
Well, Haggo gave a whip as a wedding present. Jhogo wielded a whip and used it on Viserys.
NinepennyQuote Reply
Haggo offers the whip during the wedding. But Jhogo also fight with a whip. So both are possible. I think Jhogo is more probable because of his action with the poison-merchant that try to kill Dany. Drogo’s bloodrider wille more likely be non-speaking parts.
EvQuote Reply
Well, we have two sets of bloodriders that could fit the descriptions but Aggo, Jhogo and Rhakharo are slightly bigger roles than Haggo, Qotho and Qoholo so I’m more interested in the former.
Ingemar SvenssonQuote Reply
“Jhogo, to you I give the silver-handled whip that was my bride gift, and name you ko, and ask your oath, that you will live and die as blood of my blood, riding at my side to keep me safe from harm.” Jhogo took the whip from her hands, but his face was confused.”
I think he’s the most likely one, for all the reasons people have listed.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
OK, slight amendment then, Jhogo = Raza Jaffrey. Raza has been in Spooks (apparitions) and Casuality. I’ll stretch it that his Waterloo is being in Sharpe (not ideal).
Can’t find an actor in Waterloo Road that’s been in Spooks too, not yet anyway.
Now I’m really off to bed. Damn you GRRM!
Jackie MacPhersonQuote Reply
By the way, after drogo’s death and his bloodrider’s treason, after Dany named as a Ko and her bloodrider, she offers him the whip that Haggo offered to her & Drogo at the wedding. So really Jhogo.
EvQuote Reply
What’s with the “horny-headed hammerhand” line?
Horny-headed? Sounds like a toad.
Hammerhand? The only one I know is Helm Hammerhand from LOTR.
LexQuote Reply
Lex,
I think it refers to Gendry’s bull helm.
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
It’s a reference to Gendry’s Helm and smith condition.
EvQuote Reply
Lex,
Horny headed = Baratheon stag
Hammerhand= blacksmith
= Gendry
Isn’t that what we think?
Ingemar SvenssonQuote Reply
I found Shane Zaza, who apparantly played in Casualty, Spooks and Waterloo Road.
Image suggest age more closer to Jhogho than Haggo.
Jan OdaQuote Reply
Ah… seems so obvious now. I feel dumb!
Well, Joseph Dempsie still looks like he fits the part, but I’m not sure about the Gerry/pacemaker/ferry part. But I’m impressed with myself for finding this guy on my own, even though it turns out I wasn’t first. :)
LexQuote Reply
Chris Wilson; Ralph Ineson; Silas Carson; Robert Stone; James Weber-Brown; Paul Birchard; Alan Mckenna; David Phelan; Shane Zaza.
NinepennyQuote Reply
Looks like it fits most/all of the clues!
LexQuote Reply
Ninepenny,
So far Shane is the only actor who looks like he could be a blood rider. Ralph Ineson and the others I’ve found are all extremely white.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
Jan Oda,
I think you got it.
LexQuote Reply
Okay, I’m now sure it’s Joseph Dempsie for Gendry.
Might have ridden the ferry with Gerry:
Gerry and the Pacemakers are from Liverpool, as is Dempsie.
And “older than you might have thought” = they aged him up.
LexQuote Reply
Agree about the clues, but not exactly an intimidating bloodrider. But as they say, “Beggar Kings (and Queens) can’t be choosers.”
the goatQuote Reply
I’m sure we have both.
Joe Dempsie = Gendry, Shane Zaza = Jhoggo.
LexQuote Reply
Wow, sorry about the message above, I was trying to quote Jan Oda’s post about Shane Zaza.
the goatQuote Reply
the goat,
Yes, but Jh0go is young and more innocent than your average Blood Rider. If it is Shane Zaza, they cast him perfectly.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
There is also the fact that Dempsie played in “The Friday Night Project” with Gerry Halliwel. double clue \o/
EvQuote Reply
Lex,
I’ve been thinking about “horny headed hammerhand” as well.
Horny-headed could be a reference to Gared, with his scarred, missing ears, but could also mean a cuckold (a married man with a cheating wife) because they were said to have horns. I think GRRM even uses the phrase “she has given him horns” once or twice.
Hammerhand sounds like a smith to me. Gendry, Donal Noye? Or it could be an iron-fisted ruler, perhaps Stannis? Robert also wielded a war hammer, but he’s already been cast…
Just brainstorming, I can’t pretend to be good at these clues…
GeorgeQuote Reply
Perhaps, but the line about needing a “pacemaker” clearly refers to Gerry and the Pacemakers (IMO, at least).
LexQuote Reply
that’s the essence of a wordplay.
EvQuote Reply
George,
Well, Gared’s been cast already, so it’s not him.
There’s been no mention of Donal Noye even being in this season. He’d be an easy character to drop until the following season, and have some other Brother in Black be the one to humble Jon. Aemon, Benjen, the Old Bear himself, etc.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Raza Jaffrey could fit too- he was in Mamma Mia according to Wikipedia, which is full of ABBA songs (Waterloo), as well as the Spooks and Casualty connections. As for ‘knows what it’s like to be dead’, his character in Spooks was killed off.
Either him or Shane Zaza (Waterloo road, Casualty, Spooks+ a “tardisode”- Army of Ghosts) could fit as Jhogo.
Btw, hello again everyone! Intensedebate kept killing my computer, this is the first time I’ve tried to post under the new system :)
ShinyteapotQuote Reply
Too bad it is jhogo and the the bloodylash isn’t Roose Bolton- that would make things much more interesting.
MikeSQuote Reply
Horny-head is pretty evident. It’s clearly Gendry’s Bull Helm. A head, 2 horns, a smith that have a hammer in his hand… what else ?
EvQuote Reply
Do we have any idea about whether Rhakharo will be cast in this season or if he’s in danger of being cut fused or moved? I think he needs to be cast by someone good since he’s such a badass in the A Game of Thrones CCG.
Ingemar SvenssonQuote Reply
Ok, trying to keep up with the guesses and watch the US vs. Brasil game. After a quick read through the comments, it looks like you guys got it. Has any one posted it on GRRM’s blog? And who was the first to get Dempsie?

I am going to throw out Elyes Gable as a potential for the first clue.

I would say that ‘horny-headed’ seems primarily a reference to his nickname “The Bull.” The stag makes it a certainty though!
ZackQuote Reply
Zack,
Bulls have horns, stags have antlers. And if Gendry Waters can be called a Baratheon, then surely Donal Noye, the hammerhand whose one hand crafted King Robert’s hammer and was sworn to the house for decades (unlike our young bastard Kingslander) can be as well?
GaRQuote Reply
Dunno who the last clue applies to, but Shane Zaza was in The Da Vinci Code with Ian McKellen (Gandalf) – and in Doctors, obviously, which has probably already been figured out. Elyes Gabel does seem likely, though.
Oh, I just saw those clues probably apply to Dempsie. Funny, though.

He has been known to cut men in half with a single blow. His armor is so heavy that no lesser man could bear the weight, let alone move in it.”

Gendry’s bull mantle, in words…
“This is Gendry. Strong for his age, and he works hard. Show the Hand that helmet you made, lad.” Almost shyly, the boy led them to his bench, and a steel helm shaped like a bull’s head, with two great curving horns.
Ned turned the helm over in his hands. It was raw steel, unpolished but expertly shaped. “This is fine work. I would be pleased if you would let me buy it.”
The boy snatched it out of his hands. “It’s not for sale.”
Tobho Mott looked horror-struck. “Boy, this is the King’s Hand. If his lordship wants this helm, make him a gift of it. He honors you by asking.”
“I made it for me,” the boy said stubbornly.

Jhogo, the bloody whip, in words…
The whip made a sound like thunder. The coil took Viserys around the throat and yanked him backward. He went sprawling in the grass, stunned and choking. The Dothraki riders hooted at him as he struggled to free himself. The one with the whip, young Jhogo, rasped a question. Dany did not understand his words, but by then Irri was there, and Ser Jorah, and the rest of he khas.
“Jhogo asks if you would have him dead, Khaleesi, ” Irri said.
“No,” Dany replied. “No.”
Jhogo understood that. One of the others barked out a comment, Dothraki laughed. Irri told her, “Quaro thinks you should take him respect.”
Her brother was on his knees, his fingers digging under the leather coils, crying incoherently, struggling for breath. The whip was tight around his windpipe.
“Tell them I do not wish him harmed,” Dany said.
Irri repeated her words in Dothraki. Jhogo gave a pull on the whip, yanking Viserys around like a puppet on a string. He went sprawling again, freed from the leather embrace, a thin line of blood under his chin where the whip had cut deep.

More Jhogo whippage…
(during the wineseller’s attempt to poison Dany)
Jhogo reached for the whip coiled at his belt, but Dany stopped him with a light touch on the arm. “Do as Ser Jorah says,” she said. People were stopping to watch.
(later in that scene)
Dany heard the snap of Jhogo’s whip, saw the leather lick out and coil around the wineseller’s leg. The man sprawled face first in the dirt.
(a subtle description of Jhogo)
Jhogo edged back, his hand on his arakh. He was a youth of sixteen years, whip-thin, fearless, quick to laugh, with the faint shadow of his first mustachio on his upper lip.
(before Haggo gets his come uppance)
Jhogo’s whip cracked, loud as thunder, the lash coiling around Haggo’s throat. A yank, and the bloodrider stumbled backward, losing his feet and his sword.
(As described in the ACoK index)
-JHOGO, ko and bloodrider, the whip
(So “bloody whip” is a pun. Bloody = bloodrider, Lash = whip. Done and done.)
