Photo: Riding lessons for Jones and Stevens

Finn Jones is a fan hero in this droughty period concerning on-set photos and reports (save the great blogs by Conan Stevens). He tweets and provides this great photo:

pic of me and conan riding around today. good morning, nice and chilled. http://tweetphoto.com/38238740

Hear Me Roar: We have Conan on a horse! Not official and technically not from the set, but hey, we love it. He looks really big, enough to dwarf his mount. Says Winter is Coming: “Haha! What an awesome pic. Does Conan ever wear a shirt??”. Thanks, Finn! Seems you’re enjoying the lessons a whole lot. I assume the riders at the very back are the instructors(?).

It’s hilarious how small Conan’s horse looks. It’s like, he can shift and move his leg down a bit and probably touch the ground.

Conan’s poor horse… I’m 6ft tall (I know, I know, not entirely the “mountain”) but I always wonder when I ride if my horse under me is thinking “kill me now, PLEASE!” lol. Conan’s horse is one lucky little filly though >=D

Oh and there definitely looks like there is a fourth rider behind Conan. You can barely see them because of how huge Conan is, but it looks like the third rider is turning and talking to whomever it is. I wonder if it is someone else from the cast? Or maybe just a random person taking horse riding lessons.

I don’t know how this normally works. Are these special classes strictly for GoT cast? Or would they just enroll the cast members into some generic horse riding training?

Well, Conan had mentioned in one of his blog posts that he was really excited to be working with one of the best horse stunt-teams in the world, so I’d assume, based off of that, that it’s lessons arranged specifically for the GoT cast, with in-house trainers.

Now I’m no mathematician, but I just held my ruler up the the screen and measured from the bottom of Conan’s feet (which are attached to his bent, somewhat spread legs) to the top of his head, then measured from the bottom of the horses hoof to the top of it’s head and Conan edged out the horse ever so slightly. Considering Conan’s leg position and the fact that the horse’s head is at least a couple feet in front of him does that mean that our Mountain is taller than his horse?

For all people doing calculations, as far as I know, a horse’s height is measured straight up his front leg. So the head and neck of the horse are higher up from the ground than the horse’s official height.

    ogbebaba,

Big Jake is taller than you think. He stands 20 hands, 2.75 inches, which means he’s 6’11″ at the withers (that’s the top of his shoulder). I’d imagine the top of his head is a good two feet higher than that, at least, though I’m no horse expert. I’d say if you were to measure from the top of his head down, with him standing normally, you’d get at least 9ft.

Not that Conan isn’t huge, and with your average horse being about 15 hands that’d put them well under Conan’s impressive height.

    Awesome photo.

Yeah, a horse’s height is measured to their shoulder. Americans and Brits do it in hands, a hand being 4 inches, other Europeans measure in cms. There are 17-18 hand warmbloods (sporthorses) that would be perfect for Gregor’s mount. A draft horse might do, but they’re really bred for pulling and not carrying weight.

Funnier than the fact that Conan is shirtless is his choice to ride in shorts. My legs would be raw. Hope they teach him some better basics and position, although I think that they’re just getting the guys accustomed to being horsed. Sneakers or any unheeled shoes are not truly safe for riding. If you fall, it’s so much easier for your foot to slide through the stirrup so that you’re caught being dragged too easily. Conan’s foot is already in the “home” position, the stirrup should really be much closer to the front of the foot.

So sorry, but boo on the riding teachers!

I’m betting both those riders in back are the horse/actor wranglers. Just from judging from their position.

It’s possible that there are riders in front of Fin though. I’m wondering how many are going to horsey boot camp.

There was an interesting feature on the boot camp for the film King Arthur, which would be a lot like this. Oh, I don’t think I have those screen caps anymore, too many computers ago, but it was fun to see Clive Owen, Ray Stevenson, Ioan Gruffudd, and the rest on horse for the first time. They looked much like Conan , especially Clive. You could spot Gruffudd’s stunt doubles if you looked closely. There was either Gruffudd or his stunt double in their full war armor who had his horse rear and almost come off. I’ll have to watch that feature again.

The horse work for GOT will not be neary so complex.

Didn’t Conan do stunt work? I’d imagine it would be difficult to find a stunt rider of Conan’s size.

Then again, there was no shortage of people auditioning for that role already – most of them familiar with stunt work. I suppose it wouldn’t be THAT unreasonable to swap him out during the tourney scenes.

Though I’d suggest it’s equally feasible than Conan could do it himself – I suppose it all depends on the level of training he’s to undergo.

Hi – well I just got back from Shane’s Castle, where we guessed the Tourney would be – and I managed to find the site! I walked down a few roads in the estate first, but they weren’t right ( took about an hour) so then I went to another entrance previously locked, which was now open. Drove in and lo and behold! saw my lovely wee GOT signs, and followed them for a couple of miles. It’s not actually near the Castle at all, and can’t be seen from the Lough. Anyway, I came upon it quite abruptlyat the end of one of the narrow lanes, and just when I was about 20 feet from the first structure, still in the car, a van parked by the side of the road drove out in my way and a woman got out. She was very nice and asked which dept of HBO I was from! – but I’m afraid I couldn’t lie, so she said I had to go back. She allowed me to turn the car just in front of the main area so I took this shot out of the window, backwards, as she was watching me! Sorry it’s only one of the structures there. You can just see the wooden logs in the middle of the pic, (edge of the window),which are the end of a large Pavilion structure where I presume everyone will be sitting. This is positioned facing the direction of the water – a river actually – at the edge of the site. That’s all I could see – the gazebo thing in the pic was nearest. The site’s all surrounded by trees and the huge marquee seems quite far away from it. On the way back out I had to pull over a few times to let G&H jeeps and other SUVs pass, about 5 altogether. They all had 2 or 3 men in them, not actors, cos I got a good look, but they all waved and smiled – I felt like asking if I could go back to the set! Anyway here’s the link to the pix – not very good but there you go: http://www.flickr.com/photos/silverjaime/sets/72157624580442465/

Stunt work and stunt riding differ. I guess it depends on how they film it, but it would take Conan riding every day for at least a month for several hours a day to possibly fulfill tourney with Loras as it is in my imagination. Conan has really not ridden much to this point in his life. And we know from LOTR how they can mess with sizes in film.

Now Viggo Mortensen really is a rider, and an excellent one. I think he did some of his own stunt work, but I’ve read recently that many of the Rohirrim were ladies who were bearded in makeup.

    ManBearSquid,

As an average-sized riding horse tends to be in the 5 feet to 5.5 feet high at the shoulder (about 15 hands to 16 hands, 2 inches, it’s fairly likely that Conan is right about as tall as his horse here. However, for the actual program, I’m sure they’ll have him on a warmblood or draft cross who could be something like half a foot taller at the shoulder, and considerably longer in the neck as well as more solid in the body, making horse and rider somewhat more proportional.

This probably isn’t accurate and wouldn’t make sense in the long run of Gregor Clegane’s existence, but I kind of imagine him sitting on horses much as he is in the photo- no grace or real technique, just using the beast to move him around. I’d imagine you probably can’t fight jousts or battles like that, though, so I’m most likely wrong; it’s just how I picture him. (It might actually make an interesting contrast, if Conan rides like that and Rory McCann is somehow much more comfortable on horseback… but yeah, they probably will go with the more sensible route of having all Sers ride as properly as the actors/stuntfolk can manage.)

    Winter Is Coming,
It looks like this would be just for GoT cast. “Generic horse riding training” would actually involve the riders wearing helmets and proper riding boots – though that looks like it would be a challenge for them to find boots THAT big for Conan! :) Riding schools in the UK are very strict about helmets and boots. This is just going from my own experience of having ridden at two different places in the UK (Highlands of Scotland and London).

These wouldn’t be the horses they will ride in scenes for GoT – for one Conan’s horse is too small for him and certainly not wide enough! LOL (Yes, a horse’s height is measured from the bottom of the hoof up to the top of the wither {where the neck meets the back} in a straight line). And they are still training – Conan even said they will be trying different horses to get the feel of how each one moves differently. As they improve their skills they will move onto more challenging horses and then finally to the ones they will ride in GoT. That would be the logical way of doing it IMHO.

And looking at that photo I am thinking they are going to have to put Conan on a horse that is 17 hands and upwards, so he doesn’t dwarf the horse in either height or width! (My horse would give him a good run for his money on the width – he’s a tank, but only 15.2 hands)

Will Conan’s hellhorse be a black horse? Baddies ride black, goodies ride white (greys). Lord of the Rings anyone?! So maybe a Shire horse will win it in the end! May not be a Clydesdale due to the colouring of them – white stockings and marking on the face. Again, all just IMHO.

    silverjaime,
Silverjamie, you are a legend! Thanks for the photos! Well done on getting oh so close.

Big thanks to Finn for the photo and Conan again.

Good to see all the equestrians coming out of the woodwork!

Rufus Sewell’s horse in a Knight’s Tale was a beautiful black. I don’t think it was Rufus making that horse rear before each jousting run

I don’t know Ollie. I could see Gregor on a bay. I kind of agree with Inkasrain that Gregor is a mediocre rider for whom a horse is a tool. Ledger’s appy was kind of cool. Now I think that Loras is a superb horseman, perhaps only second to the Viper and his family.

Finally, an unofficial pic from a cast member while filming is ongoing. Who better than Finn and Conan too, our fan friendly posters. I wonder though if Finn and Conan will be searched once filming of their roles start, especially while in costume.
Finn is definitely having fun and apparently relaxed while riding, while Conan appears to be rigid in that photo. maybe Conan can explain what he was going through when that pic was taken.
I wonder though concerning Gregor’s mount, aren’t there horses specially bred for armored knights, I remember watching a making of Excalibur clip and they mentioned about acquiring these certain horses that were trained to carry knights and for fighting in jousts and combat.
On another note, we haven’t heard from Maisie in awhile, she was always good to twitter or blog and even gave us some pics, so can someone give her a nudge.
Silverjaime, thanks for the spy report, keep it up and try not to get in trouble, especially on our account.

    Tysnow,

To be fair, Finn has been training for weeks now. Conan started, literally, two days ago. I’m sure Conan will look more natural given time (and a bigger horse!).

Maisie, Sophie, and Isaac have all been silent on Twitter since filming officially began. I suspect their busy schedules and probably limited internet access make it tough for them to tweet about their experience so far. They may have also been told not to say anything. Finn’s been tweeting from his iPhone mostly. And Conan we know brought his laptop with him.

Don’t you guys think it’s possible they’ll keep a horse about that size for ser Gregor just to emphasize his enormous constitution? I don’t really remember if there was ever a description of his horse in the books though …

    ogbebaba,

I think that the World’s Tallest horse is reported at 6-foot 11-inches, which would be shorter than Conan, except that horses are typically measured at the shoulder. That would mean that, with its head up, it would be taller than Conan.

I just re-read the tourney scene, and it said Gregor’s horse was dwarfed by his size and looked like a pony between his legs. So there we have it.

    Tysnow,
Yes, I brought it up in the Acharia talks Thrones in Norwegian paper discussion. Percherons, Andalusians and Friesians; and humusTaster brought up Shire horses.

    Lex,
Thanks for going to the source material Lex! So that possibly rules out Shire horse. So I will still lean towards the ones I mentioned above due to their look on film.

Don’t forget that the horse has to bear Conan as Gregor in armour, saddle and weapons so could possibly carry around 200 kg (???) all up and will possibly have to bear this weight for several hours at a time as once the actor is on the horse there will be very little getting on and off due to the armour. I guess it all comes down to what horses the production can access that are suitable for the task. I just hope they find ones with good, strong backs!

    :)

    dizzy_34,

Nah, don’t fret about the horse. 60 pounds, 300 pounds…whatever. Horses weigh over 2,000 pounds! That’s like if you or I gained 5-20 pounds, would barely even feel it.

Perhaps a bigger horse would work when Gregor is riding around the countryside… but I think, for the tourney, a smaller horse is better. It will emphasize Gregor’s size. I think Conan Stevens is pretty properly proportioned, so a larger horse might actually render him rather normal-looking (which would defeat the purpose of getting such a huge actor).

Especially since the book describes him as dwarfing his horse, and making it look like a pony, I think they should stick with a smaller horse (i.e. like the one in the photo) for the tourney scene.

Man… re-reading that tourney scene got me all the more excited to see it played out on the screen.

silverjaime: Hi – well I just got back from Shane’s Castle, where we guessed the Tourney would be – and I managed to find the site! Anyway here’s the link to the pix – not very good but there you go: http://www.flickr.com/photos/silverjaime/sets/72157624580442465/  Quote  Reply

    SilverJaime! That’s class!

I can’t believe you had the neck to drive right into the base! Fair play! And well done for sussing out where the location is. Next you’ll be hiring helicopters!

I can’t wait to get up there and start collecting severed limbs from the lists.

I think I’ll call you the Silver Shadow!

    “Which department of HBO…” LOL!!

BTW – There are a number of ‘GOT’ direction signs up beside me in Whietabbey directing traffic toward Magheramorne so I’d say they are definitely filming there now or very soon. The parents of the guy I know who is a Night Watchman said they thought he was filming this week but they weren’t sure.

Ohh…I’m now getting funny looks. I look like an Open University Lecturer circa 1970!!!

I Know, I very nearly lied and said Finance or something but she looked like an old schoolteacher I had and I thought she’d probably have a list of names for every department – so I just acted the keen fan. No act of course.

Mind you – some parts of the lane looked like they’d have trouble bringing buses down. Maybe you’ll go to the Marquee and walk from there. The Pavilion thing looked like a very solid structure – it looked really fabulous, very medieval or something. Really annoyed I couldn’t get a pic of that – but I thought shs might confiscate my phone and give me lines!

    Okta,

He looks fine, and I doubt many if any could look amazing after horseback riding lessons while taking a close up picture of yourself with a goofy expression and those behind you. He may not be pretty-boy enough, but that’s due to my own imagining of the part and no fault of the actor (besides, a cape of flowers flowing behind him should fix that lols), and I’m sure he will look different all fixed up for the part anyway.

Sets are often constructed weeks, if not months in advance. The main city set for ‘City Of Ember’ in the painthall (what a set that was!) was started about 4 months before filming began. It’s amazing the work that goes into these sets. I’m really looking forward to spending a week on this set.

    DragonStargazer,

Well you’d need all the main towns cos the locations for GOT are all over the place in the eastern Counties, not near cities as such. Also I think satellite so everyone could see how sparsely populated the place really is and how much is fields and so on.
Or maybe concentrate on just the east of the province where the locations are so more detail could be seen……
