Quick hits: Fan projects and the Wall

It’s Sunday, time to wrap up some loose ends and touch on a few random items from this past week.

Joe Campo continues his Youtube campaign to get cast in Game of Thrones. This time he asks fans to vote for one character he should focus his audition efforts on. Be sure to watch and then cast your vote in the video’s comments!

Hilario Abad has a few more tracks created as he continues his project of composing an original fan score inspired by A Game of Thrones. Among the new tracks is one for the Hand’s tournament, which is timely since they will be filming that this week. Head on over to his blog for more.

One more fan project in the works, this one comes from concept artist Xavier Garcia. Garcia is in the process of sketching out many of the people, places and events of the A Song of Ice and Fire series. While he’s doing his art independently of the HBO series, it is still cool to see some concept art on our favorite characters. Plus the artwork is awesome. Follow his blog as he updates on his progress.

Last, but certainly not least, we have another set photo of the Castle Black set in Magheramorne quarry. This one comes courtesy of Zanthia2 on Twitter.

The Wall and Castle Black
You can clearly see the part of the quarry wall that they have whitewashed to represent the icy Wall. I suspect this will be enhanced in post-production to make the Wall really impressive-looking. Click the cropped pic above for the full version.

Now all we need is a former CIA analyst to dissect all the vague shapes and colors in the picture. Maybe evidence of GoT WMDs?

I agree, it seems a little late to be jumping on the casting bandwagon when season one is so far in to production. Whatever to that other guy who posted all those videos? Did he ever get an audition?

Ran and I have been debating over at Westeros.org what the white structure above the white-washed quarry wall is. He thinks it might be a set for one of the way-castles at the Eyrie. I think it’s the top of the Wall set and that the “structure” in it is some artistic license they’ve taken, adding some sort of structure up there not mentioned in the books.

I think it could be some sort of wind shelter for the coldest, windiest nights up there walking the wall and/or a place where the winch for the cage/elevator they have is located. It’s not how it is described in the books, but I can see them making some little changes like this.

Ran’s other suggestion is that it could be a set for the bottom of the Wall, that the gray area in the “structure” might be one of the gates through the Wall, itself.

Hopefully there’s a second season! Hopefully Martin finishes the books! just searched for the other actor, turns out he took his youtube videos down months ago. Avery Clark was his name. Turns out he’s been pretty busy playing Hamlet recently – found a Wall Street Journal review of him.

Avery Clark’s flamboyantly physical performance of the title role makes for one of the most theatrically potent Hamlets I’ve seen in a good many seasons, far fresher than last year’s Jude Law-powered Broadway production and more accessible to boot. Terry Teachout – Wall Street Journal.

Did he ever get an audition for Thrones?

I agree with Ran, to me from that pic it does appear that HBO is taking a slightly different artistic aproach to Castle Black, it even looks more like an actual castle with a curtain wall. There is a large structure attached to the wall, it has the appearance of the bottom of a tower or keep, then it appears to drop down ten feet to a short curtain wall segment and that connects to a smaller tower base then another short curtain wall segment then an identical tower base before ending in the wood backdrop screen.
I cannot really decipher that top structure though, it appears to be a gate like you have suggested and the whitewashed area next to it is roughly 12-15 feet in height, so it could be the top of the wall, the final waystop to Eyrie or the opposite side of the wall, so all of you have had good logical viewpoints.

I too would put Joe in the Mance Rayder category, though unless he has that British Film Equity thing going for him (or was it Irish Equity? I forget), it’s going to be an uphill battle just getting an audition. The Rabbit mentioned Avery Clark, who I remember from way back, who worked his ass off trying to get an audition… but no, not a sniff.

    Not British.

And it’s not that they’re not taking non-Brits, it’s that their first choices for any of the minor roles are all local. You see them going outside the box only when they need very specific types (say, an extremely talented dwarf actor, or a 7′ muscleman). Nina Gold and co. have remained consistent in this to say the least.

So I’m not here to throw a wet blanket on Joe, who I find to be very charismatic and likely talented. But I think the only chance he would have at scoring an audition would be if we really get behind him on Winter Is Coming and make him hard to ignore.

Which I’m all for, provided he can act. So I’d like to see Joe’s rendition of Mance … and maybe throw in some Edd Tollet for diversity.

I am gonna throw here another idea for Joe:

The pitty is that I do not recall now the name of the character, but I am sure AYH would know.
The Shae s bard. The guy Tyrion sent Bronn after him.It is likely that they are gonna cast him for S2, because of relationship of Tyrion and Shae.

I love this photo, and I love that Joe is trying and you guys have shown support so far…hopefully he does a great job in the actual acting bits of his little audition web series. I’m sad to hear about that Brits only thing, admittedly…as I too, am putting all my efforts (work-wise, exercise-wise, etc) into hopefully getting even an audition for Season 2. I’m able to do most english-speaking accents fairly well (Irish, Scottish, English, etc), but this news still definitely isn’t thrilling to say the least.

Still…I know I plan to keep working hard and hoping for the best, and at the very least enjoying the hard work and stories from everyone already involved. I wish them the best, as well as Joe in his endeavors. I think it’s great that people are already this excited about even trying…and Castle Black already looks great!

And lastly of course, thank you again to WiC for your dedication and updates. Great work, gentlemen.

Yeah, the british equity thing is gonna be a big problem for Joe. Past that, the other problem is most of the parts he’s mentioned are a bit older than he looks, though with a good enough performance he could pull out an Osha for Mance or Dolorious Edd. Symon Silvertongue only seems better because the age is closer. Now, I’d like to see him audition for a Kettleback, as they seem to be our three stooges of season 2, and seeing that impish attitude get owned by Tywin’s “I have been many places, but none of them named here, or there.” in season 3 would just be awesome.

Unfortunately, barring him being skilled in an appropriate instrument, I’m just not seeing a way out of that Equity thing. Though it is notable that there hasn’t yet been any bad comments about his performance. WiC readers have never been reluctant to pour on bad reviews when they don’t like people’s youtube auditions, so this all positives so far thing shouldn’t be shrugged off as unimportant. As far as I’m concerned, it means cracking that Equity thing on performance alone isn’t yet impossible, but the actual auditions would have to push it up even one more notch from the good stuff he’s already put out.

    Critical Geek,

Can’t tell you how thrilled I am about the positive feedback from ASOIAF fans.

Just a note on British Equity, I checked into it and I actually qualify for membership as I’ve been a member of both Actor’s Equity and Screen Actor’s Guild in the US, and I performed in a few small movies and theatre tours as well.

    http://www.equity.org.uk/HowToJoin/default.aspx

Since my videos have been posted, I’ve gotten a few messages from people in the states who have connections to people that actually have a say in casting, saying they will help me get in the door. I haven’t pushed these connections yet, because the time isn’t ripe… Soon though. Very soon…

I’m convinced that all I really need is support from you all, and so, for now, as long as I have that, I’m happy as a dwarf in Shea.

As for Joe Campo, I believe the support he gets right now is mainly due to the entertaining nature of his videos and the humouristic approach he ‘s taking.

Of vourse there hasn’t been much critic for now, because he hasn’t published an actual audition yet. We haven’t seen him act.

The campaign concept is fun and he comes out as a nice and charismatic guy.

So yeah, I like him. Hopefully when we see his actual audition, people won’t bash him too much.

And that’s just my explanation of the almost unanimous pro-Jos Campo movement we’ve seen up to now.

And his qualification for the Britich equity is good news for him.

My question is, what can we do to make the series successful? I mean if every fanboy and fangirl buys the DVDs and gets HBO just for this show it doesn’t seem likely there will be a second season let alone push GRRM to finish the books. What can we do to branch out and publicize the series in forums and blogs that aren’t just ASoIF sites?

I don’t know about you fellows, but this Xavier Garcia fellow’s works have nothing on Komarck (and Nasmith, but he didn’t draw ASOIAF people). Komarck’s depictions of the Lannisters were pretty much bang on and he managed to work in historically plausible arms and armour to boot. XG

    Winter Is Coming,

Komarck hits all the right notes with me because he got the characters as I envisioned them, and his fantasy illustrations have the appearance of historical authenticity (as the folks who did Rome put it). I’m a bit of a history buff, and it always pains me to see artists refuse to use historical examples of arms and armour for reference because it doesn’t look ‘fantasy’ enough. The suit of armour that Komarck’s rendition of Loras is wearing wouldn’t look out of place among the more ornate examples in any museum, and that’s exactly what I like about his style.

If such a project did come to fruition, I’d be too busy raging at the art in that RPG book to play the game properly. I’m already mildly miffed at the art direction that Green Ronin took for their game. :P

      Quote  Reply

  52. Posted August 23, 2010 at 5:21 pm | Permalink

    Roger,

Agreed that the historical authenticity comes through strongly. What amazes me is that Kormarck combines this naturalism with a dynamic edge — when called for — that beats the “anime style” artists at their own game. For example, this cover he did for a limited edition of Erikson’s Gardens of the Moon. Stupendous badassery.

As for his ASOIAF.. I really like the landscapes and structures. Tyrion in the sky cell is amazing. And his Jaime especially.. what an amazing vision. Of course, the art looks so amazing because GRRM provided such evocative situations and characters in the first place. A winning combination.

    Brad Shelton,

That Gardens of the Moon covers is incredible. I know Anomander Rake is the ultimate badass, but there he damn near transcends badassery, without looking all anime and over the top.

    I assume that’s Rake, anyway :P

Komarck’s stuff in general is excellent. The only one I take issue with is his Tyrion, who looks too old, but that’s a minor point; everything else is on the insane side of way too awesome.

Okay, contrary to my earlier statements, I now officially love Michael Komarck’s art! :) I’m still iffy on a couple faces (Tyrion looks a bit old, Cersei looks a bit 1980′s), but that Anomander Rake image is awesome.

However, THIS Anomander Rake image is even better! And also by Komarck.

Lastly, I just discovered a hilarious coincidence. Just this morning I finally read H.P. Lovecraft’s story “The Call of Cthulhu”, and afterwards I found some really cool Cthulhu images, which I set as my desktop background . This was earlier today, but I had no idea until right now that they were ALSO by Komarck! Ha! :D

    Lex,

Great Cthulhu art! Every time I see more of Komarck’s art for/about books, I get the strong feeling that he has taken the time to read the books and really knows the essence of the characters / situations. He really seems to capture that, instead of providing stock characters and generic misty landscapes. It goes beyond being an “accurate picture” of character x y or z.. he really taps into what these great writers put into their worlds.

Of the 2 variations on Rake, I think I like Version 2.

    Cristian Far Arnedo,

Gardens of the Moon is a great read. It is the 1st in the Malazan Books of the Fallen series. It is not the same tone as ASOIAF, it deals very little with human drama which defines the story of Ed Stark. But the Malazan books have their own appeal. Epic swords & sorcery, protracted military campaigns, the world seen through the eyes of implacable demigods and hapless infantrymen.. often sharing the same scene. The first 3 books of that series are among my very favorites.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen is a great read. Different to aSoIaF, but if anything even more epic. It is a bit hard to get into; Gardens of the Moon drops you straight into the middle of a story already in progress and if you don’t hit the ground running it can be pretty confusing with the many characters and locations to keep track of.

Sounds really good, intricate, epic and complicated, and I like that, so I think I’ll give it a try. Thanks!!!
