George R. R. Martin has posted two new blog posts with a set of clues for two different roles in each. So four parts all together. Here are the first set of clues:
The first guy is a man with no man, who is up to no good. The second guy is a man with no man, who is up to no good. ((Maybe they’ll get names eventually, hey. Our red-headed whore did. Just sayin’)) The first guy has been a guard and a garda, he’s slept with beasts and eaten a girl, he knows that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, he’s seen sleeping dogs and flying saucers, and met Kavalier and Clay’s greatest creation (or did he)? The second guy is not simple and he’s not high, but he’s been to the beach and crossed the Mersey, seen his share of doctors, and once went down in flames. Oh, the humanity, the humanity.
And the second set:
These guys are bigger than the first two. And they have names too!
The first guy loves goats, the second likes his meat tough. The second guy never conquered India. Is it rabbit or rarebit? The first guy might know. The guy who had more dingers than anyone but the guys who liked the juice, well, the second guy isn’t that guy, or even the guy who chased that guy all summer. The first guy has been a nobleman, a moron, and a hog. The second guy holds a record: the biggest little guy. The first guy has been every flavor of cop. The king of the deep knocked the second guy topsy turvy.
I hope that was confusing enough. By this point, even I’ve lost track.
Winter Is Coming: Got to run. Hopefully I’ll be back and you guys will have puzzled it out!
UPDATE by HmR: So here’s what morning in Europe brings. First off, it was clear almost from the start that the first set refers to the two shady characters (plotting their separate schemes in different parts of the world; let’s put it that way to avoid spoilers). Even more sure we’re on the second pair of roles: Shagga and Greatjon. Now to best guesses: Man with no name #1 – Simon Lowe, Man with no name #2 – Lalor Roddy; Shagga – Mark Lewis Jones, Greatjon – Clive Mantle. Detailed comments forthcoming.

Sounds like the first two actors play un-named characters in the book. The second two guys sound like Shagga (loves goats) and the Greatjon (likes his meat tough).

Huzzah!

Well… the second guy’s first name is Alexander.
williamhperkinsQuote Reply
I think the first guy from the second set of clues might be James Nesbitt.
“The first guy loves goats” Well that’s Shagga, unless they plan some kind of crazy HP crossover.
“The first guy has been every flavor of cop” According to IMDB, James Nesbitt has played a cop in “Murphy’s Law”.
“a hog” His role in “Waking Ned Devine”?
I just have this feeling…

Wow. These are tought.
Agree on Shagga and Greatjon for the two named guys.
shadallionQuote Reply
This is a longshot, but “The king of the deep knocked the second guy topsy turvy.” There’s a stage show called “Poseidon! An Upside Down Musical” I can’t find anyone who fits the other clues, though.
VeeloQuote Reply
The first named guy (Shagga) is Welsh, since “rarebit” is a Welsh variation on the word (and dish) “rabbit.”
shadallionQuote Reply
Okay, I’m going to throw out Joseph Morgan for Shagga.
He’s Welsh and he was in a remake of Ben-Hur, possibly as a nobleman.
shadallionQuote Reply
is John Rhys-Davies even remotely possible? Welsh name, raised in Wales, is a very large man who was very little in the LOTR movies…
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
I went back to the not-a-blog to check the clues, and I think this commenter may well be correct about Shagga.
ShinyteapotQuote Reply
Kevin McKidd (who played Poseidon in Percy Jackson & the Olympians) was in a film called Topsy-Turvy.
Here’s a cast list – maybe someone can figure out who the Greatjon is?
VeeloQuote Reply
Sorry – forgot to post the cast list:

I tried going through the cast list of “Topsy Turvy” a few minutes ago, and my god, it’s huge.

Stolen from hippoiathanatoi on Not A Blog, but I think he really hit the nail on the head there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Lewis_Jones
* Welsh.
* Look at the number of cop roles he’s played.
* Mr. Hogg (the “hog” from the clue) in Master and Commander
* Nobleman = King Uther Pendragon
Everything seems to fit.
Erik SjöströmQuote Reply
Hello, this is my first post :)
But I have a guess for guy number 2 from the first set of clues.
Simon Lowe: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0523047/
He’s not simple (Simon), not high (Lowe), been to the beach (was in something called beach boys), has crossed the Mersey (was in the TV show Mersey beat), has seen his share of doctors (has been in many episodes of doctors), and once went down in flames, oh the humanity (reference to the hindenburg, and he’s been in a TV show of the same name).
The clues seem to fit anyway, but no idea who he’ll be playing!
Crazy DiamondQuote Reply
Erik Sjöström,
I agree. Now all we have to is wait and see if Mark Lewis Jones is our Shagga.
winterqueenQuote Reply
Crazy Diamond,
Simon Lowe’s resume is very fitting, but he’s only 5’7″. Seems odd that Shagga or Greatjon would be so small, if those are the correct roles.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
I suspect the first guy with no man was someone in the cast of the 2008 film “The Escapist” (the Kavilier and Clay reference).
Jan FennickQuote Reply
Add a link:
This guy Roddy Lalor for the first clue
In a tv show called as the beast sleeps
In a film called boy eats girl
In a film called the Escapist – answer to the kavalier and clay clue
Is Irish so has probably played a garda – Irish policeman
IvorQuote Reply
Jan Fennick,
Oops. I think GRRM meant “no name” and so did I.
Jan FennickQuote Reply
SteveThePirate2,
I think Crazy diamond is talking about the first set of clues, the one about the two unnamed characters…. and I find his line of thinking pretty strong by the way.
Quiet WolfQuote Reply
Hmm didn’t quite get the hang of that link thing
IvorQuote Reply
So we only have the Greatjon left to find.
Never conquered India- Alexander?
Veelo told us on the previous thread that the next bit refers to Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle- I know nothing about the sport in question and will take his/her word for it. But a quick search reveals there was a film about them- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250934/fullcredits#cast so maybe someone in a different role in that?
Holds a record for biggest little guy
‘The king of the deep knocked the second guy topsy turvey’- one of the various versions of the Poseidon Adventure?
It must be possible from those…..
ShinyteapotQuote Reply
SteveThePirate2,
I just watched Simon Lowe’s showreel and I have to agree with this. Even with the magic of film/tv production I can’t see him in that role in any way.
Erik SjöströmQuote Reply
I think you’re right, Ivor, but the guy’s name is Lalor Roddy.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0734498/
He was in The Escapist, in an Irish film called “The Guards”, another called “The Summer of the Flying Saucer” etc.
No clue who he’s playing though.
Jan FennickQuote Reply
SteveThePirate2,
but he is talking about the first set of clues, not the second
JehphgQuote Reply
This guy looks nothing like the Greatjon, but Ron Cook was in Topsy Turvy with Kevin McKidd (Poseidon) and he has played Napoleon twice (the biggest little guy). I can’t link that to the Alexander or the Maris/Mantle clues, though.
VeeloQuote Reply
I think the Greatjon is to be played by an actor called Richard Alexander. He has played the Mikado – topsy turvy reference there perhaps. He has been compared to fan favourite Brian Blessed – “Richard Alexander is a charmingly blustery Mikado, with a habit of switching from calm rationality to raucous bellow at the drop of a hat and sometimes in the middle of a sentence; I don’t know if the similarity to Brian Blessed’s Richard IV in Blackadder was intended or not, but either way it was highly amusing.”
Craig GloverQuote Reply
Jan Fennick,
Whoops! Has to be him though – also in a tv show called murphy’s law (anything that can go wrong will go wrong
IvorQuote Reply
Jehphg,
Ah, you’re right, he is talking about the first set of clues. My bad.
SteveThePirate2Quote Reply
Quiet Wolf,
Yep, that’s what I meant.
It seems like 4 roles have been cast; the first set of 2 clues refers to nameless characters (one of which being my guess of Simon Lowe), the second set of 2 clues refers to Shagga and Greatjon.
Or that’s how I took it anyway, I could be wrong!

Hey WiC regulars, I check here a lot and am a big fan of ASoIaF, but I don’t know much about actors, so I don’t usually contribute much to these discussions.
However, I am a big USA sports fan, so in case it’s not obvious to everyone, I thought I’d just make something about GRRM’s second set of clues a bit clearer. The quote:
“The guy who had more dingers than anyone but the guys who liked the juice, well, the second guy isn’t that guy, or even the guy who chased that guy all summer.”
This is referring to baseball, and specifically, “The guy who had more dingers than anyone but the guys who liked the juice” is referring to the player in Major League baseball history with the most home runs (“dingers” is slang for a home run in baseball), not including the recent players who broke the records but used steroids (“the juice”).
The historical person George is referring to is either Roger Maris (who broke the single season home run record) or Hank Aaron (who broke the career home run record). I *think* GRRM is referring to Roger Maris, based on the second part:
“…well, the second guy isn’t that guy, or even the guy who chased that guy all summer.”
the ‘guy who chased that guy [Roger Maris] all summer’ likely refers to the great Mickey Mantle, the teammate of Maris who was competing with him to break the single season home run record (this was in 1961), which was, conincidentally exactly 61 homers.
Anyway to summarize, in terms of figuring out the clues, I would suggest looking for people who played or were in a movie / show about the 1961 home run chase, between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. The most likely candidate was a great TV movie directed by Billy Crystal called, appropriately, “61*”
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250934/
However, it is also possible that GRRM is talking about someone to do with Hank Aaron, so look into this maybe too. Also, Babe Ruth held BOTH records, before Maris and Aaron eventually broke them, so potentially look for actors in movies with Babe Ruth too. But I think Maris and Mantle and 61* are the best bets.
I hope this helps!

I guess the two men with no names who are up to no good is the wine seller at Vaes Dothrak and the assassin with the Valyrian dagger.
FilliamHMuffmanQuote Reply
FilliamHMuffman,
Yeah, that was my guess too.
Half MyrishQuote Reply
So we’re all assuming that GRRM meant “man with no name” both times, yes? Because casting Belwas early and recasting Varys didn’t seem to make much sense.
cowboy killerQuote Reply
I think the second man “up to no good” may be Mark McGann, as he has been in a movie about the Hindenburg (going down in flames, oh the humanity) and is originally from Liverpool which is in the county of Merseyside, which takes its name from the river Mersey.
SwiftQuote Reply
Oh, not to mention that his brother Paul McGann played the Doctor. (He’s “seen his share of doctors”.
SwiftQuote Reply
OK I think I’ve got one: Clive Mantle as the Greatjon.
Not the guy who had more dingers (Maris), or even the one who chased him all summer – Mantle.
Played James Martin in the 2005 Poseidon Adventure
Is the tallest actor (6’5″) to have played Little John in the 84-86 “Robin Hood” TV series.

Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Maxwell James,
There is Robert Clive, the first Baron Clive, known as Clive of India. Supposed to be one of the key figures in the creation of British India.
Also Clive Mantle narrated the audiobook “Grk Smells a Rat” which is set in India, but I think the first reference is more likely.
I think it is Clive Mantle for Greatjon. Great work
VaessQuote Reply
Man that biggest little man clue was so obvious now that we know what it means. God damn it.
GrimtuesdayQuote Reply
I’m gonna say that Lalor Roddy is playing the catspaw, and Simon Lowe is playing the wine merchant.
Not that I’m actually the one that guessed the actors (I’m no good at that) but I am merely applying them to the two men they’ll likely play.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
So I think we’ve got them all, haven’t we?
Lalor Roddy as the Catspaw:
Simon Lowe as the Wine Merchant:
Mark -Lewis Jones as Shagga (Credit to hippoithanatoi on NaB):

So… are we 100% sure yet?
Anyways, I’m not totally convinced that GRRM meant to say “man with no name”. It seems like a weird typo to make, especially twice in a row.
If he did intend to say “man with no man”, that would lead me to believe it’s two unnamed black brother’s (who swear no allegiances except to the Night’s Watch).
