Myrcella and Tommen cast

Aimee RichardsonA couple more casting confirmations straight from HBO, this time the young princess and prince of Westeros have been cast, we have Aimee Richardson as Myrcella Baratheon and Callum Wharry as Tommen Baratheon.

Richardson, you might recall, had been cast in the pilot, however it was stated at the time that they would likely put the role up for recasting if the show was greenlit. Well it looks like they liked Aimee so much they decided to keep her on for the full season.

Callum Wharry is an unknown and my Googling didn’t turn up any images of him. I did however uncover some references to a Callum Wharry who is a youth footballer from Larne. Assuming that is the same Callum Wharry (a safe assumption, I think) it looks like Callum is around 11 years old. Which would fit with the aging up of the characters and make him of an age with our Bran, Isaac Hempstead-Wright.

Winter Is Coming: Neither of these two seem to have much acting experience. However these characters, though important in the world of Westeros, don’t have much to do in this first season. As long as the kids look like their characters, they will be fine. Aimee looks like she will be a great Myrcella. Hopefully a picture of Callum will turn up soon, so we can put a face to the show’s version of Tommen. (If Callum’s parents are reading this and want to provide a pic, hit me up using the Contact link above!)

Sounds good. I had been wondering why there wasn’t any news for those two, as we should at least see them in the background during quite a few moments that I thought were already done filming.

So they had already been cast then, but just hadn’t announced it? I’m hoping we see quite a bit of them…

I had received reports that Myrcella and Tommen were present for the tourney scenes. So it sounds like that was the case. Not sure why they waited so long to announce it. Probably because they didn’t think it was worth announcing!

    Nice scoop WiC!
Aimee Richardson looks the part, and we can assume she was good since they had the pilot to test her skills, so good news!

Maybe GRRM will provide a picture for Tommen when he gets back… maybe… when he’s finished reading and answering his hundreds of emails…

I’m hoping for someone a little younger for Frey, since he’s still alive by the end of book four. It would be a bit of a downer if we learned to despice Dotrice as Frey, and then have someone else in that role when the old bastard finally gets his come-upings (?) Maester Cressen would be a safer choice for Dotrice.

I picture Tommen as a chubby, but cute little boy. The boy in the picture looks a bit too in shape for the role. Testing the spoiler tag, even though its not really a big spoiler. Season 4 will be very interesting for both these characters

Well, I *could* look forward to it, were it not for the unfortunate involvement of Akiva Goldsman, the “talent” responsible for writing the screenplays for, among others: Batman & Robin, The Da Vinci Code, and I, Robot

Shame J.J. Abrams is no longer attached. That could have been something.

What a cute little Princess Myrcella we have! Little Aimee must be thrilled she’s part of S1. I’m looking forward to seeing what Callum looks like. As far as kids go, we now need Rickon Stark and Jeyne Poole (if they are casting her). There hasn’t been talk of casting Podrick Payne so I think he might be pushed to S2. We don’t really need a Pod until then anyways.

    Zack,

I agree that A.G. is responsible for some very stinky things in the film world, but maybe he’s had a brain transplant recently (or maybe I’ve just developed really bad taste) because the episodes he wrote of Fringe are (IMO) pretty damn good, certainly among the high points of that uneven show. I also liked his script for I Am Legend, except for the ending which we shall not speak of. So I have a little tiny bit of hope for the Dark Tower series.

    mummer,

I’ve heard good things about Fringe. I sincerely hope you’re right about it, and that Goldsman does justice to one of my favorite series ever.

    Gar,

Haha, the ending was actually really cool, I thought. I’m speaking of the epilogue part, not the stupid decisions such as: “Crimson King is a doddering old lunatic who screams ‘EEEEEEE’ and throws Sneeches around” or King bringing his car accident into the series.

Among others. Some of those choices were complete head-scratchers.

The actual ending felt cool though. I realize that’s not the most popular opinion but I felt it had a very strong redemption theme to it, and I have a feeling the DT series we read was Roland’s second-to-last trip through the cycle. That he was rewarded for his selflessness with the Horn of Eld, finally, makes me think he’ll finally be able to do everything right this next time and break the cycle and be at peace.

    o/t I know…sorry :)

Oh, gosh. Thinner is horrendous! Stay away from movie adaptations of his work except for the following:

    Carrie
    Misery
    The Green Mile
    The Shawshank Redemption
    Stand by Me
    The Shining

Some people like The Mist too. It’s not bad, but not on the level of those six. 1408 has a lot of good points as well. I can enjoy others like the miniseries for The Stand, and Tim Curry is good in IT (an otherwise abysmal film)…but I wouldn’t recommend them to the average person.

    Zack,

My main problem with the ending was that it was a huge anticlimax. The Dark Tower and the Crimson King were pathetic. And after that build up… I was aghast.

I haven’t read the retconned book 1 (and I won’t because that series is dead to me), so maybe there’s something in there that makes the ending seem redemptive rather just a cop-out. Oh, the little note from King at the end of the book was great too. I forget the wording, but the gist I got was “I know this ending is terrible, but it’s my book and I can do what I like.”

    GaR,

Haha. I don’t know if he said it was terrible; I think he said he knew people would hate it. Warning us not to read ahead, and such. But also that he couldn’t see ending it any other way. I kind of agree.

But like I said, for me that’s among the *least* questionable story choices he made anyway. The cumulative effect of all the rubbish payoffs almost got to be too much for even me to bear, and I entirely empathize with you for feeling distaste at how it all ended. I can’t fathom how he can be so brilliant and so lame within the same book… :)

I adored the first 4 books of the series. After that, it was kind of a trainwreck.

I certainly hope we don’t need to expect the same pattern from GRRM. *nervous*

    Crotalidian,

I agree Aimee looks like a perfect Myrcella. And since the powers that be will have seen her act in the pilot, they must have decided she’s a good actress too.

I join the chorus hoping for a picture of Callum, would be nice to see what our Baratheon family all look like. Off topic- I notice that everyone (characters in the book as well as fans) refers to Cersei as a Lannister, yet Catelyn and Lysa are normally referred to by their married names. Obviously this hints a lot at where Cersei’s loyalty lies, but unless the women of Westeros can choose whether or not to take their husband’s surname, which seems unlikely in that culture, I wonder how it will be dealt with in the show? Will the character be listed as Cersei Baratheon, do you think?

Back sort of on topic, I hope we get casting news for the remaining child characters- Rickon, Jeyne and Beth Cassel (presumably even if she has no lines she needs to be there), then the Stark household will also be complete :)

Forgot to say, I think it’s important that Robb’s encounter with the Freys is in the first series (though of course we could just see Catelyn ride off then return with the conditions of the agreement, we’d lose a good scene there) as the decision he takes adds to his growing maturity (seen without the context of later events). I think that needs to happen before ‘the King in the North’.

    re: Frey in S1

Walder Frey has to appear in S1, as well as Mirri Maz Duur. But since they appear later, it is understandable that their casting might not be finalized yet.

GRRM said they wouldn’t introduce the Tullys, so we can deduce Robb and co. won’t enter Riverrun in S1. But we were also told the entire book would be covered, which would lead to the King of the North. To me, that means we get to see the Whispering woods. And that makes the most sense.
Anyone who suggest otherwise should back their theory with a reasonable way to end Robb’s story arc as well as Jaime’s for s1. I haven’t seen one just yet. Of course, D&D could prove me wrong, but IMO, there’s no way we won’t get the Whispering wood mainly because of Jaime. And to get to the Whispering wood, Robb needs to cross the Twins and meet the Freys.

Unless they go with Shinyteapot’s suggestion:

Shinyteapot: I think it’s important that Robb’s encounter with the Freys is in the first series (though of course we could just see Catelyn ride off then return with the conditions of the agreement, we’d lose a good scene there) as the decision he takes adds to his growing maturity (seen without the context of later events).

or they somehow move the Twins and/or the Whispering wood on the map so Robb can get to the Whispering wood without crossing the Twins but has to cross them comes s2 to get to Riverrun, which sounds silly and could have a bad impact later on. Moving the crossroad inn is acceptable, but please, HBO, don’t mess too much with the map.

Also, I think it would be wise to have the meeting with the Freys in s1 because:
    1) As Shinyteapot said, it’s a good scene.
    2) the promise of marriage for Robb and Arya would give something to look forward to in s2, other than the last episode’s cliffhangers.

ok, I apologize for the lenghty post…

Interesting question. It is something that always bothered me: Cersei is never called a Baratheon (I don’t think the two names are ever linked in the books), though Cat is often linked to both Tully and Stark qualities and houses, and Lyssa is always Lyssa Aryn unless they’re doing a flashback.

Re: Season 1 chronology. I think people are overstating the importance of being exactly like the books. I like the books as much as anyone, but there are easy changes that could be made.

For example, it’s easy to have Rob end with the Whispering Wood or outside Riverrun, both of which are dramatic action scenes. And you could easily move the Twins south on the map a bit, and have them be used in Season 2 to get somewhere.

Does that affect some geographical things? Yes. But nothing insane to me. The most important thing, to me, is that Frey is included as a preamble to season 3. He needs to be there ahead of time. But I see nothing crazy about having him early in Season 2 versus late in Season 1. You switch a few things around, but the thrust of the drama is still very smooth.

But who knows. Perhaps he’ll be in season 1. Which would be great to me, as it works well in the books. I just don’t think I’m going to freak out about it, unless they removed him from Season 2 as well, which I doubt they would. Just because it might be different from the books doesn’t mean it work work well dramatically on its own, ya know?

I totally agree, for S1 we have to have the Late Lord Frey and Mirri Maz Duur. Showing Catelyn and Robb gaining a powerful ally in the Freys while Ned is powerless in King’s Landing would would be very bittersweet. I think the final episode should end just how it did in the book – birth of the dragons.

The whole King of the North thing is hard to call. As where to end S1 for the Robb and Catelyn-please know this is just an IDEA on my part – maybe show Robb’s victory of the Lannisters and the capture of Jaime. When I read AGOT for the 1st time, I thought the Whispering Woods was the last Catelyn chapter of the book and was surprised there was a Catelyn POV arriving at Riverrun. We could start S2 with the Robb and CO arriving at Riverrun in glory with Jaime as a captive. We will then meet the Tullys and the other riverlords. Once at Riverrun, the North and the Riverlands proclaim Robb the King of the North.

Again, just my 2 cents worth……

Nicole: Side note, when can we ‘expect’ a true trailor/preview for the series. I mean if it is going to air in about 6 months, shouldn’t we see some advertising soon? I guess it would have to come after filming is done, but I was hoping you (WIC) might have an estimate?

Keep in mind this is all speculation, I haven’t heard any rumors, which I WAS hearing about a week prior to the teaser airing.

To answer your question, yes, we should see some advertising soon. HBO won’t want to wait until filming is done. They should have enough footage in the can to make a fairly comprehensive trailer. All the main characters have been filmed. They have action shots galore from the tournament. At this point, the only thing they would be missing is some shots in Malta.

If they wanted to release a new trailer to the widest audience, I suspect that the True Blood season finale on Sunday would be their best bet. The premiere of Boardwalk Empire is the following week, and may also present a good opportunity, but there’s no way it will match the viewer numbers of the TB finale. So this Sunday or next are both possibilities, with this Sun. being the bigger of the two.

Of course, they might want to wait until they get some footage from Malta. It would provide some nice backdrops to the Dany shots and really help set the show apart. As to when they might release this speculative trailer? Well the New York Comic Con would be a great place to do it. A lot of buzz and hype can be generated by premiering a trailer at a large event like the NYCC.

It depends on if they want to market more to existing HBO viewers or those who may not be current subscribers. If it is the former, they may want to utilize TB’s large audience and air it before the season finale. If the latter, a premiere of an epic trailer in front of salivating fans at a large con can really get the buzz going and motivate people into subscribing to HBO.

My hope is they will do a little of both. Keep the show on HBO subscribers radar by giving viewers a small glimpse prior to the TB finale, maybe in the form of a production update with some footage from the set, a new clip or two and some lines from Benioff and Weiss. This will hopefully be accompanied with a batch of new production stills. Then next month, debut an epic new trailer during the NYCC and post it on the official site shortly thereafter so all the fans whip themselves into a frenzy and the buzz really starts to build in anticipation for March!

As far as the King of the North scene goes I like the idea of them doing it after Whispering Woods however moving the Battle away from Riverrun. If they do that they can avoid the whole why didn’t they just go into Riverrun problem but we still get the Crowning scene. I also think it would be cool be cause if they are in a camp we can get Jaime’s reaction because in a castle he would not have heard the shouts but in a camp he would.

It’s good to hear that more actors have been cast, and to see the thourough nature of the effort involved on all sides. This seems to be coming along nicely!

Today for the first time, at least for me, I went to my local bookstore and my heart skipped a bit for joy, as I saw the “A Song Of Ice And Fire” books (the familiar North American editions with the stylized lion, crown, sword and eagle) with a new addition…stickers?!?!?! I know, I know a small thing, but seeing that they said “A major series coming soon from HBO in 2011″, I was extatic. Mind youI have been talking to librarians and book store employees for what seems like an eternity now, and to finally see the first mainstream signs of public acknowledgement of the series is exciting. The lady at the bookstore claimed that these stickers started ariving recently from Bantam-Spectra, at least the Canadian arm of the publishing company.

She also said that indeed there will be a new version of the books, either with the HBO issued logo and images of the series, or even other new covers, illustrations etc. She had no specific details on the release date, but said that they should be in print quite soon for sometime in 2011 (i’m guessing to coincide with the premiere of the HBO show)! She was only talking about mass-paperback editions, I am not aware of any special/de luxe versions so far.

NEATO!!!!!!!!!!! I feel more excited than that time when Cartman had a giant satellite antenna coming out of his but!

    OldGran,

See, someone WITH MONEY thought those ideas were good, and they hired a writer to convert their vague notions into a screenplay. If you want to write something that you control completely, write a novel.

Now, regarding season 1 vs season 2 appearance for Walder Frey: How is it any less money to have an actor guest star for one episode in season 2 vs season 1? Answer: it isn’t. The only way to save money in that manner is to not have him appear at all until season 3, which just doesn’t work, so might as well have the scene in season 1. Where you can save money is in identifying all the OTHER freys, who can avoid appearing or being identified until season 2.

In fact, you could have the same weak chinned actor play ALL the other freys, differing only in the makeup and costuming he wears. Sure it’ll be interesting sfx mirroring him in the twins, but all the close ups could be of the same guy. :)

    Critical Geek,

the reason is that for continuity purposes it would be much more difficult to have the Actor in S1 then have to hope he doesnt get an offer before s3 is greenlighted, if you include him in s2 it can be the last casting and the last thing filmes, by then S3 may already have been greenlighted or at least pencilled in so they could tie him in to the project before they film him.

its not the cost its the continuity they are trying to preserve

As books are being discussed at the mo. does anyone know why the Ice and Fire series was withdrawn from Amazon UK’s Kindle book store? I ordered up my Kindle 3 and was all set to buy the books at £2.50 and they had disappeared the next day! Some comments seemed to suggest they were poorly edited for the Kindle.

    Peltast,

Well, Catelyn is referred to as “Catelyn Stark”, and Lysa as “Lysa Arryn”, despite the fact that the Tully house is as much important as the Stark or Arryn ones…
Perhaps is it simply due to the fact than some families are more proud of their names than others (Martell, Targaryen, Lannister…). And, well, the Tully motto says “family, honor, duty” (or something like that), so perhaps it implies that Tully women see themselves more like mothers than others, thus changing their surnames… I don’t know.

I think people are forgetting that the story telling does not have to be linear w/ re: Whispering Woods and meeting the Freys. They could easily have the Whispering woods, and then come back around in S2 and show how it was pulled off. They could give you essentially Jaime’s prospective, and then explain what happened later.

In reply to some of the posters here… I went on Thursday to my local Chapters store and saw the stickers again, unfortunately not all the copies had them attached. Out of let’s say 6 copies of “A Game Of Thrones” or “A Clash Of Kings” etc. , only 2 would have the HBO stickers. But what I did, while browsing the shelves, I re-aranged the books so that the copies with the HBO stickers were up-front or on top.

One lady was looking at me as if I was insane, and after awhile an employee came up asking me if she could help me find a book, no doubt thinking that perhaps I was there to boost something…LOL.

Nevermind, whenever I have time, I will to go all Indigo and Chapters bookstores in my city and I’ll do the same there…That’s the life of a lowly footsoldier….ROFL!

Has Myrcella been aged up in the series?, Is Aimee 10-11 or is she 12-13?. I mention this because if it goes four seasons and we assume HBO will combine Feast and Dances, this means Aimee if she is the later age will be 17-18 while in Dorne, which alters the brutality of Darkstar’s attack, as the physically scarring of a 10-11 year old has more shock and creates enmity with the reader. Whereas the same action on a woman almost 20 creates in my opinion a feeling from the viewer that she reaped what she sowed by going along with Arianna’s plan.
