MGoT update: Dinklage on Cersei

TyrionA new update over at the Making Game of Thrones site, this one from a new name, Steve Marzolf. Steve Marzolf is a journalist/editor that works for HBO and produces interviews and other editorials for their website. It sounds like he may have interviewed some of the cast members recently, as this post is a quote from Peter Dinklage about his character Tyrion’s relationship with his sister, Cersei Lannister.

Nothing says “occupational hazard” like the piercing eyes of Cersei Lannister – and it didn’t take long for Peter Dinklage to realize just what a handful the queen could be. “Tyrion’s relationship with Cersei is…oh God, it’s really difficult,” he says. “They’re constantly battling one another. Unlike my relationship with Lena Headey, the actress playing the role – I’m really good friends with Lena, and we’re very upset that we don’t have more scenes together this first season. But it’s really tempestuous because both of them see through each other’s veneer and pretensions and all of that. Tyrion and Cersei are both fraught with those. So I think people who see each other for who they really are have a hard time being around each other in pleasant company…”

Winter Is Coming: This is the first time we’ve heard Dinklage talk about the project at all. Really cool to hear his thoughts on his character, especially in his relationship with Cersei. Hope we get more of this interview in the future!

    Yes that was intentional.

I LOVE this part. Show’s that they’re already thinking about future seasons, at least keeping the idea in the back of their minds.

Oh, boy. Go sit in the corner for ten minuets and think about what you’ve done young man. Just kidding, I love bad puns.

It’ll be really cool to see these two but heads in season two. Not too mention I think most of us can agree that CoK had some of the best Tyrion moments in the series so far. I remember Lena Headey saying in a interview once of how she and Peter Dinklage are friends and she was really looking forward to working with him again.

It’s really cool to here some of his Peter’s thoughts on the character. He’s an awesome actor and I’m sure he’ll nail Tyrion’s sardonic sense of humor that we all love.

I think that he has an interesting veiw of the character.

to those who read a feast of Crows than I think you know why Cersei hates Tyrion so much …

but to someone who didn’t, then I think he’s got it spot on …

what I always found interesting is that Cersei and Tyrion in times of duress (or at least Tyrion) show love and caring for one another and it’s such a knee jerk reaction than there heads catch up with themselves (or least Cersei’s does) and they go back to hating one another.

such as in A Clash of Kings when Stannis sieges Storm End and Cersei actually gives him a big hug and dances with him.

Or when Joffery dies and Tryion reaches to embrace her.

the Lannister siblings are just really tight with each other and just like Peter said it works on their nerves so much.

Can’t wait for season 2 :) Seeing those two go head to head is one of the things I’m looking forward to the most.

The more I see of Lena Headey’s work, the more curious I am to see her do that part. Can’t wait can’t wait :)

    Blecki,

I wondered if they were going to add some makeup to make him significantly uglier. Maybe later…

Blecki: Dinklage is way too handsome to be Tyrion.

This was discussed at length before. Consensus was “Meh, so what.” Arguments in favor of a handsome Tyrion were that it would make the nickname “the Imp” and getting called ugly that much more unfair, and that superb acting trumps visuals that are not plot demanded.

Very true, calling him ugly even if he is not will only emphasize how unfairly Tyrion is treated just because he is different. That is more central to his character than him being simply “ugly”.

Thank you Peter Dinklage! I too can’t wait to see Cersei’s piercing eyes… man oh man… so excited. Really gotta reel it in somehow. “In this first season” sounds like there’s been talk of two or more seasons. Also, unofficially ‘committing’ to more than one season spreads out the cost investment in the sets over two years (or more).

I’ve loved Peter Dinklage as an actor since seeing “The Station Agent” and it was through researching his other roles that I first learned about the “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series. After reading the books, I’m positive that Peter Dinklage was destined to play Tyrion. I’m glad that he seems to have either read the books or did his research well and I’m super excited to see him get the recognition he deserves from this show.

I’m not worried about us getting a second season. The amount of money HBO’s put into building sets alone all but guarantees that. They’ll wanna get their money’s worth. It’s the seasons beyond the second I’m concerned about. HBO has nuked great shows early before (Rome and Deadwood most notably), so ratings will be important.

Also on the topic of Tyrion not being ugly enough – Tyrion’s got a whole lot of subtle emotions that are important parts of his character. That complexity is why fans were so excited to get Peter Dinklage in the first place. It seems rather a waste to get such a fine actor, and then cover him up with ugly-fying makeup. Getting his full expressiveness was probably considered more important than being perfectly loyal to the physical descriptions in the books.

Besides, he’ll have a chance to get uglier by the end of season 2 anyway.

For the record, I’m very happy that they didn’t use “ugly makeup” on Tyrion. To be honest, I never pictured him very ugly (until later, anyway…). I think the ugliness is more perceived than real.

I would like to see the mismatched eyes, however. Are we certain whether or not they’re doing this?

    Kana,

I agree, although it’s going to be interesting to see how the TV adaption differs from the books given this change. They’re many cases where people interact with Tyrion the way they do in large part because of his looks. I’m sure with all brilliant writers they have it won’t be too hard for them to makes some changes and still keep a great story.

I do hope that they give Peter some coloured contact lenses though :D

I’m in Malta till Sunday(shooting a very pivotal scene)…Then onto Belfast..

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lena-Headey/133910436652310

Hmmmmm, what scene could it be? My guess is Cersei and Ned in the Godswood or maybe the big scene on the steps of the Great Sept?

Other possibilities? Dunno. Not a certain famous Throne Room scene, because that would be shot in Paint Hall.

In response to all the ‘ugly’ Tyrion stuff. as a dwarf in the medieval period it is set he would be considered deformed and ugly for simply being a dwarf. It is only our acceptance and modern attitudes.

Until Season 2, he not being ugly in our eyes makes us empathise with him more although I hated him in the first book, it was only later when he shows his better side

The only pivotal scene I can think of would be Lancel and Cersei carnally celebrating King Bob’s death, but maybe that’s just the julandro in me talking. All I can say is that scene has to be in there, or HBO bad.

Really? I feel just the opposite. I feel Tyrion was almost entirely sympathetic in book 1 “the good Lannister,” whereas in season 2 he starts to do some really nasty stuff….

Closest we got to a 2nd season confirmation was some discussion about how the quick pick-up of BE was a good sign. Nothing has been confirmed. Don’t know where he got that from.

I think the whole Peter Dinklage being too handsome is getting a bit tired and old, tbh. As stated, there is far more to Tyrion’s character and persona than just his looks.

Besides, I am sure when we deal with his unfortunate disfigurement, they can add in the ugly there, if it’s truly needed.

I honestly hope when we get to Brienne’s casting and looks that people aren’t in outrage if the actress chosen isn’t hideous and gigantic in size. Just get someone kinda mannish, don’t use a lot of makeup, and boy up her costume and it will work fine if the actress and directors know what they’re doing.

    Still hoping for Clea Duvall.
