The Kingsguard adds a knight

Ian BeattieAs if a new photo wasn’t enough, HBO has confirmed a new casting: Ian Beattie as Meryn Trant. Beattie is a Belfast-based actor whose biggest role to date was as Antigonus in Oliver Stone’s Alexander. Meryn Trant is a member of the Kingsguard whose most famous scene involves an encounter with Syrio Forel. It seems likely he will be, along with Jaime and Barristan, the only other member of the Kingsguard to have a speaking role.

Winter Is Coming: I never had a clear mental image of any of the random Kingsguard knights, so I can’t really say Beattie fits my image of Trant. But he looks like someone who could be a knight. So that is good enough for me. Casting news continues to trickle in, with the parts of Stiv and Kevan Lannister still awaiting to be filled. And possibly more.

I always pictured Trant as a rather dour, clean shaven moonfaced fellow – and this fellow is rather attractive…but that’s the skill of acting, to make you like or dislike the character. I’m sure we will all loathe him (in a good way!) once he starts being mean. :)

Apparently Trant is Ellis from ‘Die Hard’. I can see that.

Off subject, but thought I would post this here as its the newest thread. Anyone heard any news or rumours about the location for the scenes at the Eyrie? I am thinking they will have a set built in the Paint Hall, but not sure. Comments most welcome.

    Two Feathers,

I was wondering lately about Eyrie, too.
It is the most difficult set, IMO.
Not the interiors, but the exteriors would be very CGI thing, I guess.
Somehow, I think they would use some castle as basis for it. But which one, I have no idea.

Are they not casting Beric and Harwin for Season 1? I would think it would be important to see them sent off on their mission so that when they reappear in later seasons it is more dramatic.

Yeah, looks like he could pull off being a Knight convincingly to me. On another note it’s cool that we’re getting so much new news that last couple days :D . If only it could always be like this. On the other hand its kinda nice that HBO

    The Rabbit,

Hi Rabbit, I have a strong mental image of the exterior of the Eyrie and the Vale, and in my mind. Its, bring a tear to your eye, stunningly beautiful. Like the Austrian Alps or the high country of New Zealand maybe. With the Eyrie its self looking like its been carved into the mountain top…I have been all over N.Ireland and unfortunately there is nowhere even remotely like that. I can`t even think of a castle or part of one that could be used…Then there is the interior ,with its moon door and sky cells, surely this would have to be built from scratch in the Paint Hall don`t you think. Thats my guess anyway . I have heard a rumor they will be filming the Eyrie scenes soon. So maybe we will find out more if that is true.

Still think they should have given the Syrio scene to Mandon Moore instead. Have one recognisable KG rather than two semi-recognisable ones. But maybe they’ll give Moore’s role in the second book to Trant instead.

Pretty cool to hear we’re getting more Kingsguard. Part of me really wishes they could have all seven (except perhaps Preston Greenfield, who I seem to remember doing literally nothing), but there’s just no way. But still, Boros Blount is definitely a defined (albeit very minor) character, and Arys Oakheart, while having very little to do in GoT, is of course important in the distant future. But just the three we have cast already are pretty cool.

Not on topic, I just want to point out this video of the digital effects used in HBO’s amazing John Adams miniseries to showcase just how different first takes and finished project looks with HBO. Makes me even more excited! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTUs7hDq2PA

    Wastrel,

Agreed. Merging those two would simplify it without losing anything important to the story.

Is Trant the one who beats the crap out of Sansa in CoK? If so, I like his jovial/Santa Clause-y look; it’d make a powerful contrast between his appearance and his actions, adding even more intensity to what is already a deeply disturbing situation.

    Inkasrain,

If you are referring to when the scene in the throne room when Joffrey has Sansa’s gown ripped off, that was Boros. But Trant is the other primary Kingsguard that Joffrey used to beat Sansa in CoK.

    Half Myrish,

Yeah, thanks, I was thinking of the knight who beats her first, and most regularly, so that would be Trant. That will be intense enough on its own, the throne room scene will be insaaaane.

    Two Feathers,

I have a feeling they may create some sort of scale model (similar to what they did in LoTR for Helms Deep etc.) to give some great Wide angle shots then indoor and CG for the rest, really hope they find a good mountain pass (maybe in Wales’ Snowdon region) as the ascent of tyrion etc and the descent of Sansa for teh winter are pretty good scenes to have and doing them indoors may spoil the feel

I was wondering, does anyone remember which Kingsguard is the one that Tyrion kills during the siege of Kings Landing?

jwsnasa, that was Mandon Moore. It’s actually funny, because Jaime thought he was the most dangerous Kingsgurad, because his face gave nothing away. I’m still not sure whether he was Cersei’s catspaw, or someone else’s. Though I’m guessing it’s Cersei.

    Congrats WiC!

Also, still loving those casting news. Now give us Stiv, Kevan and Tobho Mott :)

Importantly to season one, Trant is the one who does all the Sansa beating in the first book.

Perfectly cast. FFG’s “A Game of Thrones” card game has a ‘Ser Meryn Trant’ card, and I’ve always pictured the character like he’s shown on that card. And the art looks as if they painted the actor, so that’s cool.
    Check it out!

Meryn Trant could be Mandon More and Boros Bluont (sp.) some time.
