The flood gates will not close, and we couldn’t be happier! Making Game of Thrones just released another short preview, this one a promo for the larger one due out on Sunday, December 5th, just before the season finale of Boardwalk Empire. Take a gander!

Fire and Blood: Just the barest of snippets, but we finally get what looks to be a finished scene (with audio) in the Ned and Catelyn scene—likely taking place in Bran’s bedroom, and also likely taken from episode two. Not only that but we get the briefest shot of a certain important Tyrion scene, among other tiny flashes. Keep ‘em coming, HBO!

I always pronounced it buh-RAY-theon. There’s no official canon on pronunciation, though, so I don’t particularly care.
Loved Michelle Fairley’s line, and the Bean’s reply, and loved the glimpse we got of Tyrion in the Inn of the Crossroads. His expression is a perfect “Well, crap, this isn’t good.” Everything else was just an interview (which I don’t particularly care about one way or another), or too brief a glimpse to form much of an opinion on.
Hopefully it does what it’s supposed to do, which is whet the appetite of people who haven’t heard of it before. That HBO is specifically billing it as “The next major HBO series” is pretty key.

1) I’ve been kidnapped and accused of a crime I didn’t commit, and now I face judgment from a crazy lady and her pre-pubescent son who seems unnaturally enamored with watching people fly off the mountain. Wonderful.
2) I’m locked in the most sadistic prison cell imaginable and am being thrown to the floor by a particularly mean-spirited gaoler whose two brain cells couldn’t produce a synapse even if you rubbed them together by hand. Spectacular.
3) My kidnapper dragged me into the mountains and surprise, surprise, we were attacked by the nasty hill folk who inhabit the region. I’m now forced to fight for my life with a scavenged shield while a guy four times my size hacks a sword down at me that is bigger than I am. Awesome.
4) I stopped at an inn looking for a few pints of ale, nice warm bed, and maybe a nice girl I could pay to warm it; now I’m being accused of horrible crimes and half the inn has swords poking gently into my neck. Superb.

Pretty sure the audio books pronunciations are canon, as GRRM probably signed off on the readings of names. Baratheon is indeed pronounced in the audio series as Michelle delivers it.
Listening to the books actually corrected my reading of Catelyn as well – I originally thought it was pronounced like the common name Catelyn/Catelin/Katelynn/a million variant spellings (pronounced KATE-lynn), but the audio series reads it as CAT-uh-lynn, with another syllable. I think the show is gonna mess with a lot of people’s readings of names to be sure.

There are several different people who have read ASoIaF audiobooks and no consistent way of saying the names between them and they can’t all be canon. Roy Dotrice might have more ‘authority’ than others, but really it’s only when GRRM has said a name in a reading or interview what it sounds like to him. The fact that GRRM hasn’t seen fit to dictate to fans what all the names should sound like indicates to me that there is no strict canon pronunciations and people are free to pronounce names how they like, but I’m guessing when the TV show comes out then that’ll become the closest thing we have to canon. Personally I don’t care so much how they pronounce the names so long as they do so fairly consistently across the cast – I’d rather not see a scene which contains four different pronunciations of ‘Daenerys’.

I know I’m going to watch it a hundred times over the coming months and be picking it apart. Hell I’ve watch the first ‘winter is coming’ teaser around 50 times or so between the internet and TV.

Btw, I finally figured out what my problem is with Emilia Clarke as Daenerys. It is not the fact that she might be slightly ’rounder’ than the average Hollywood actress (believe me, I don’t like the starved look of many of those), it is much more her posture. I always imagined anything but the earliest Dany as a very proud girl/woman, and for me a proud posture is reflected in a straight back and shoulders and helped by well-defined collar bones. Unfortunately, Emilia Clarke has neither of those features… (in contrast for instance to Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Winslett, who are a bit curvier yet much more regal-looking than most Hollywood actresses). I truly hope Emilia Clarke makes me forget her sloping back and shoulders with her acting skills!

Things I noticed in the teaser:
Windows in the Throne room are decorated with seven-pointed stars, I guess dragon skulls were placed between the windows.
What is that structure with 4 columns and fire on top of them?
I think we see a first glimpse of the Wall in this picture of Jon on the bridge. I expected it to look more smoother but actually if anybody would make a 100-meter tall wall of ice I’m pretty sure it would look rough like that.
At 0:28 there is a shirtless warrior with strange helmet. Who in the books had helmets with long spike on top of them?

1) Dinklage is gonna be AWESOME! I was never 100% convinced that Dinklage was as perfect as everyone else seemed to think… but his facial expression in the Inn is fantastic, as is his facial expression in the Sky Cell photograph! I also love that he mentioned how complex every single character is. I’m sold!
2) I loved hearing Emilia speak. I really have a small crush on her, and I will hear no more of this posture-gate! :)
3) Cat and Ned was spot on, and Fairley definitely has acting chops.
It’s still surreal… part of me almost wants to pause everything so that I can take some time to reflect on the reality of this show, but everything seems to be moving so quickly now… just like we predicted back in the spring. It’s like an unstoppable freight train of GOT goodness coming our way.

This is the way that all English people would pronounce it. As the books are supposed to be European Middle Ages based, I’m worried to hear American pronunciation… Spoils the immersive effect that I want from the series.
As for Dany, I am sure she should be “OMG, what is all this?” at first, only growing into her Queenship over time, with the events that happen. Remember, she is being sold into a completely unknown culture, and married off for gold by her only flesh and blood, who bullies her unmercifully!
I was unsure of Sean Bean as Ned (although I adored all his Sharpe and Boromir adventures), and thought of Ned as somehow more stark and austere. But I’m warming to him.

There is no posturegate. One of the very first things that’s called into question in the Daenerys chapters is her posture. In fact, Viserys makes a point to mention it.
If anything, Clarke is emulating the character perfectly; Dany is a young girl uncomfortable in her skin. We won’t see her “straighten up” until she begins to grow her own spine, so to speak.
I would highly recommend you re-read Dany’s first few chapters. I think Emilia Clarke is spot-on.
Now if only we could do something about that wig…

To balance my previous comment a bit: I fully agree that Clarke has a beautiful voice! I’m positive that she will have no problem using it to sound both vulnerable and commanding.
OT: anyone seen the latest Merlin episode on BBC last night? Obviously this series has a much smaller budget than GoT (noticeable not only in the poor CGI, but unfortunately also in the often pretty ridiculous plot turns), but some of the actors would fit so well in GoT. Bradley James (Arthur) and Richard Wilson (Gaius) are really quite good, and Colin Morgan (Merlin) is truly sublime. I don’t know if or how long this series will continue after this season, and if the actors are bound by their contract to the BBC, but surely we could find a role for Colin Morgan in the next seasons of GoT!

Honestly, did I my ears let me down or did the Jons training sword sound like someone butchering dead pig in half. Not to mention about the metallic sound what sword makes when you draw it from sheath.
About the posturegate; ofcourse she hunches. I would too if my brother would have pressed me down for my whole life, I was sold to some barbarian as a wife, my family is dead and I’m being chased by assassins just to mention some things. I think Emily is spot on in her character, let’s just hope she grows mentally as nicely as Dany when the series goes on.

It changed back and forth in the book. At first Catelyn wanted him to go and he didn’t want to and she basically convinced him it was necessary, but after Bran’s accident she changed her mind. He’d already realized that it was important to investigate at King’s Landing, however, and that’s where this scene is coming from.

If you are going by her posture while sitting on horseback, it is natural for non-expert riders to slump when riding bareback without the stirrups to “prop up” their spines. It takes years of riding discipline to open the hip joints enough to allow one to stretch the torso in a classically erect style without the saddle to assist you. She may have very nice posture when she’s standing on planet Earth.
That said, just seeing the words “The next major HBO series” is thrilling…

I think that Michelle Fairley’s look is off too. Catelyn is a full woman not only wife and mother and she is supposed to contrast with Lysa even though she had the childbearing and northern life. But her acting is really really perfect. The emotions were so good and still restrained, she has the chops for sure.
Emilia Clarke will make a great series one Dany, I’m not sure yet on her transformation to more powerful but only because I haven’t seen it yet. This is a tough role for a young actress and she will need a lot of range. I can’t wait to see the teaser tonight and hopefully they will have finished scene of more characters like her. HBO has given us enough to know we can never have enough!!!

The few scenes she has with Lysa during the whole story does not seem anywhere near as relevant as her being a woman of an appropriate age for Beans wife and the mother of her youngest child. It does not seem important at all that she’d be younger. Also, she looks both a little younger and prettier when she is not crying – as do we all, i guess.

The way I tend to read names in my head often doesn’t work well with actually pronouncing them out loud… Like I still read H’Gar as “H”-gar, which is obviously wrong but oh well. Then when I start talking about characters with my friends I find I suddenly have to figure out how to say the names so they sound somewhat correct.

Oh, this is just like when they made Lord of the Rings into movies. So many people where freaking out because of Strider’s/Aragorn’s look. No one thought Viggo Mortensen had “the look”. Same for Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins. The only person no one complained about was Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
Everyone has their own idea of when each and every character looks like as it is all very subjective. If they make even 3/4 of the fans happy then I figure they have done a really good job.

Where am I freaking out? I am really excited to see more from HBO!!! I added many exclamation points!!!!! Like that :) But that does not mean we can’t have opinions. One of my opinions was also that Fairley has great talent, you see?
Another opinion is that Catelyn is supposed to be more than wifely and motherly. We do not need to choose between the Catelyn that is little Rickon’s mother and the Catelyn that broke Littlefinger’s heart, that makes the character less typical! That is just my opinion, where it comes from that the look is off. We don’t need to worry about discouraging HBO any more because the show is here to stay! And I’m glad of it :)

Whilst I’ve seen a few things Fairley has been in and been impressed, I wasn’t quite 100% sold on her as Cat (especially after Ehle, who would and should have been wonderful in the role). This very brief exchange of dialogue has convinced me she’s our Cat now. Very nicely played.
Best bit for me was Dinklage’s “Every character is really complex,” line. Good way of summing up the appeal of the story.
Also really like the way HBO is selling this: “HBO’s next BIG series!” Damn straight.

Although Michelle Fairley doesn’t look very close to what I pictured, she is clearly a good actress, and she looks like she will pull off “strong and determined, but grieved and fraying at the edges” extremely well, which is how I see Catelyn. I just hope they ugly up Kate Dickie (Lysa) a bit to show more of a contrast between her and Michelle, since it’s fairly relevant to the Cat/Lysa/Petyr triangle (past jealousies and all that).
I suspect that not so many people would worry about Cat’s appearance if they had made Lysa fat! It doesn’t really matter though. My response to all these teasers is still, “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”

Since I have seen here in HP a week ago and especially after I see a glimpse of the dialogue with Sean here, I am absolutely determinated to claim, that she would make an excellent Cat Stark.
And her look has nothing to do with Lysa s look at all, IMO.

I don’t think she looks older than Sean Bean as Ned. I think that both characters have been aged up, as have Lysa and Littlefinger. I will say that in the novels, because Catelyn was younger, I did picture her as more comely and early thirties. But when you have Ned looking 50, it’s only sensible to have Cat looking of an age with her husband.
I think that Lysa’s mannerisms and crazy behavior will make her far less attractive than Cat. I’m not sure why they did not go for a more Rubinesque actress, as Katie Dickey looks rather gaunt compared to the Lysa of the books, but I think Lysa’s neuroses will make it very clear that Cat is the more appealing of the two sisters due to her inner strength versus Lysa’s insecure prattling and manipulations.

I heard GRRM speak at a book signing a few years back when Feast For Crows came out, and he was talking about character name pronunciations. I only remember a few things about what he said, but the one thing I remember distinctly is that “Arya” is two syllables. AR-ya. As I recall, he did not make “y”s into distinct “ee” sounding syllables, but instead used the softer pronunciation, as in AR-ya.

We need to believe Catelyn birthed Robb–not Robb the 14-year old boy from the books, but Robb as played by Richard Madden–who is a 24 year old man. Even the old Rickon arguments fall flat, because they aged him up too.
The people who complain about Fairley’s looks boggle my brain. It’s like they expected Sexy Young Cat or something. Is there a fetish group out there I’m unaware of?

The video and pictures are both great, and between the two we’ve now had a good look at many of the key characters. Hearing a bit of dialogue was just brilliant (though I always pronounced Baratheon with emphasis on the third syllable rather than the second- but I’ll get used to it, and the many others that are likely to follow) :)
Ned- Sean Bean has always been perfect as far as I’m concerned. His clothing seems about right, practical, functionl, smart without being ornate.
Catelyn- Neither Ehle nor Fairley seemed quite perfect in terms of appearance for me- until I saw the picture of Catelyn in the Eyrie. The video just confirms it. Fairley looks exactly as Catelyn should, to me, and I have no doubt she’ll pull off the role brilliantly. Costumes great again, like the use of Tully blue.
Tyrion- Dinklage is a superb actor, and his expressions portray Tyrion perfectly. I still think he’s not ugly enough, but it’s a change I can live with (and, much as I hate to admit it, the girly part of my brain doesn’t really mind that much that both Lannister brothers are hot, though I’d prefer accuracy). Love his red top with the gold decoration. In the Eyrie pic he looks like he’s rolling his eyes- can’t tell if he’s just looking upwards or responding to something particularly mad from Lysa.
Jaime- perfect. Could have walked right out of my head. The Kingsuard armour (apart from the helmet, which looks a bit odd) is a reasonable change from the pure white since that didn’t work, and it does look special. Love the lion on his sword.
Cersei- her clothes are great and the set for her bedroom is massively OTT- exactly as she likes it. Don’t like the wig, it’s too obvious somehow. It gives her very long, wavy hair- in a warm climate I’d expect it to frizz!
Robert- spot on. Addy looks exactly like Robert from my head. Clothes are great too, though like everyone I’m puzzled by the kraken on his sword. And I’d love to see him with a hammer too.
Dany- Emilia looks very like the Dany from my head, but the wig seems awful. It looks very wiry in the picture, my first thought was of the very wiry fur of some breeds of dog! However it looked much better in the clip, albeit not perfect, so I hold out hope that this, and Cersei’s wig, will be better in the final product. Not convinced by the clothes-and surely trousers are more practical for riding than a skirt? Like the metalwork though- it seems Dothraki are simply rather better with metal than fabric.
Jon- Nothing like I imagined him, moustache and curly, side parted hair seem a bit off to me. I think it’s combining that with the slightly frilly effect of the high collar (which is fine as a practical bit of clothing). I preferred Kit’s look when clean shaven and with short hair. But I don’t object to it, it’s just different.
Bran- Perfect. And I love that the Stark kids really look like they could be related.
Arya- Equally perfect. She’s a bit messy, looks young and vulnerable enough that people will really feel for her, but still rebellious.
Sansa- she’s very tall! No particular objection to that mind. The red hair works pretty well, though her makeup looks a bit unnatural. Perhaps that’s deliberate- I’m sure some form of makeup exists in westeros and teenage girls generally like wearing it. The dress is great- clearly a practical cold weather outfit but still feminine, though that hem is going to be filthy from dragging through the mud.
Lady- she’s sweet. No problem with the size, she’s only a few months old. And looks very well groomed- while I’m sure all the kids take care of their wolves, Sansa is the only one I can imagine spending hours every day cleaning and brushing one. Lady will be the cleanest, neatest direwolf around. Shaggydog will roll in every pile of dung in the North!
The various men at arms- I like them all. For the families we’ve seen so far (Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Arryn) you can instantly see the difference between their men, which will surely be useful. Love the Stark sheilds and the little stags on the Baratheon helmets particularly.
Conspicuous by their absence- Robb, Drogo (seeing him in the distance from behind- or seeing Momoa being interviewed- just isn’t the same), Joffrey. The publicity seems to be making far more of Jon than Robb- I hope Robb will still be one of the main focuses of the series. Would love to see Sandor in full makeup too.

If Michelle Fairley is TOO OLD then Sean Bean and Peter Dinklage (who are much older than their characters in the books compared to Fairley) are WAY TOO OLD as well and should be sacked immediately and the series completely refilmed from scratch! It’s only right, after all.
Honestly, the different standards that the male and female actors are being held to on this show by some commentators is pretty telling. The male actors can be 20 years older than their characters and no-one raises an eyebrow, but if an actress isn’t totally hawt and young (no matter the logic regarding the age of her children) then she is completely inappropriate for the role and should be sacked immediately. Ridiculous.
On another note, Ran got a Tweet from someone who’d attended a TRUE BLOOD event and met Stephen Moyer, and Moyer categorically denied that he’d filmed a cameo for GAME OF THRONES and that was the first he’d heard of the idea. So we can strike that theory.

I have always pronounced Targaryen as Tar-GAR-yen, but I did hear GRRM (in a podcast I think) say Tar-GAR-ee-en. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that he doesn’t really have a set of way of saying the names that he creates and sometimes varies between them.
To be honest, whenever I see Daenerys written down, I just read ‘Dany’. If I try to think about though, I probably say it the same way that Drogo did, even though he almost definitely got it wrong (evidenced by the fact that when he said it, it was written phonetically, highlighting the language barrier between them). Props to anyone who can remember the pronunciation I am talking about without looking it up by the way. I think it is just after the wine seller scene (but I could be wrong).
I say Arya as AR-ya, but a friend of mine pronounces the ‘y’ as a separate syllable (AR-ee-ah), so I am used to either.
I didn’t even notice Jaime was not spelled Jamie the first time I read through the books, which is a bit rubbish really, so he will always be Jamie to me.
Oh and to be vaguely on topic, I say Baratheon like they did in the teaser, although it was still weird hearing it said ‘for real’, if you know what I mean.

I imagined a more slender Jon with straight hair. Maybe I wouldn’t mind if he wasn’t one of the main (and coolest) characters..I also imagined Dany “thinner” (though that’s not really the word I’m looking for, I mean I expected her to look more delicate – but let’s give her a chance, we haven’t seen her acting). Sophie Turner is gorgeus, but (and I don’t want to look like a pervert/pedo here) the Sansa in my mind was curvier.
Why isn’t anyone talking about Samwell!? He looks perfect, but I expected his cheeks to be more red. Given the aging up thing, I suppose I can bear his beard (:D).
A fact that truly worries me is the eye color issue: if I’m not colorblind, Tyrion’s are both brown. And I didn’t expect Targaryen’s eyes to be PURPLE, but maybe dark blue-greyish. That’d make them realistic, but with a fantasy touch.

Just want to add my two cents to the chorus of reassurances about the characters’ ages.
GRRM was really very fair, in the novels , in keeping true to what would be historically age appropriate for the characters . So while it’s sort of icky (by our standards) to think of 12-14 yr. old girls facing the kind of life experience his characters do..he also has 40-50 yr. old men referred to ( by other characters) as old and grey. The odd character who has survived to be what we would think of as old is a phenomenon.
So, when he talks about a woman who is 30-something having beauty still (after 5 kids ), we should never think of 30-35 yr old beauty by our standards, but maybe 45 yr. old beauty ( without the benefit of cosmetic surgery) and a man in his mid to late thirties having lived through the close-combat wars and skirmishes Ned has, would probably not look a day younger than Sean Bean. In fact, he probably should be so lucky.
So I’m really glad the characters have all been aged up ,makes it all the more believable IMO.

I’m coming to think of the characters’ looks as icing on the cake, by now. While I’m thrilled to see them in full costume, set against rich scenery, etc., the fully-realized pictures and increasing volume of actual footage have also pulled Game of Thrones into the realm of “oh-my-frikkity-goodness-this-is-happening” reality. For me, it’s becoming less important what my gut reaction is to Michelle Fairley, or if I feel Emilia Clarke’s eyebrows are too dark, because the way they exist now (regardless of my opinion) is how (in TV-Westeros) they really, actually are. Just the way it didn’t matter to me how awful I thought it was that Ned killed Lady (a pretty tame horror compared to the rest, I know, but it really got to me!), my feelings on these things are not so much unimportant as irrelevant. It happened, it’s cannon, and I have to, and want to, roll with it.
(Sorry if this was soapbox-y, just wanted to get it out!)

Cersei: SIR-say
Myrcella: mer-SELL-ah
Varys: Initially: VEAR-eez (like “varies”), more recently to rhyme with “Harris”.
Viserys: I’ve never been able to get this one consistent. most recently I’ve been trying to read it as VISS-er-iss. Before that it was VISS-er-eez.

Like you said, we got a good long look at Dany’s eyes in this trailer. I think that it’s fairly certain at this point that we are NOT getting purple eyes. This looked like a polished trailer to me, I think HBO would have changed it here if they were going to do it for the series.

That was actually pretty cool.
Things I didn’t like:
- I cringed at the “No… I was trained to KILL!!!” line
- the execution scene is a bit too grey. I’m fine with them going for ‘arty’ but I think that’s a bit too much. You can give the impression of bleakness just by having that terrain, you don’t need near-monochrome too. Greyish, yes, but not GREY.
- either this was made early on or there really isn’t a lot of fighting in the series – ie, the battles aren’t just minimised, they’re completely off-screen. I say that because they were clearly desparate for every scrap of weaponry, but couldn’t do better than some teenagers practicing in a yard.
- not sure if the Gratuitous Lesbian Sex Scene is a brilliant thing to put in the trailer or a rather embarrassing one.
- is this post-production stuff? I though I saw what I thought was Jaime with very dark brown hair, which surely can’t be intentional?
- don’t know why, but I really didn’t like Cersei. She doesn’t seem real to me. Partly appearance, partly behaviour, which seems too polished, to me. Can’t see this Cersei giving the “such a dearth of good sacking songs” line. But, who knows, we’ve only seen stills and seconds.
- Still don’t like the samurai. More than I did at first, but still not. Not so much the Asianness now, more the ugliness and weirdness. Can see why they needn’t a distinctive style for the baddies, though, when you’ve got that many men in armour.
- Old Nan (?) was too cliche, cheesy and annoying.
- The “fear is for the winter” – “winter is coming” punchline: both lines are good (though still don’t get the chuckle?), but put right next to each other at the end it’s a bit too cheesy.
Things I did like:
- the music. I know the second half is standard trailer music, but is the first half? It’s nothing like what I’d have thought of for the series, but I thought the low-key minimalism thing actually worked quite well, and I’d be OK with that sort of thing for the series. Better than LOTResque honey-and-thunder music, anyway.
- Robert. I’m not 100% convinced yet, but I thought Addy managed to do “gruff, likeable ordinary guy who is also very serious and not to be taken lightly” quite well in his line. In the past I’ve heard Addy’s voice lighter and more bouyant; I thought here he managed to put some more years and foreboding and muscle into it.
- The contrast between North and South. The first series will actually be fairly lacking in clear Us vs Them conflicts for the viewers to latch onto (yes, the Lannisters are Not To Be Trusted, but for a lot of the series they’re not actually The Enemy in an existential sense), and they need to find ways to compensate for this. I suspect they may play up the Stark-Baratheon-Lannister vs Targaryen aspect (the “war is coming” element), and they’re also clearly playing up the “North” vs “South”, cinematically as in the plot. So long as they don’t overdo it, I think this can be quite a powerful way of both enjoining us to oppose the decadent south and to make Ned look out of place and surrounded.
- the choice of Big Line for Ned: “the man who passes the sentence should swing the sword”. It’s better than the one about fear. It’s less cliche, and it really establishes a moral tone for Ned (non-decadent, hard, dutiful, but not callous), and for the world (where this sort of behaviour is necessary).
Overall, I’m cautious about the series, but I thought that was a pretty good trailer both for fans and for ordinary viewers. I think it’s wise to emphasise the darkness, and the fear/horror aspect of the series, in trailers even if it’s hard to do in the series itself (except through foreshadowing).

Gregor and Sandor aren’t teenagers, are they? There was plenty of fighting in this, not just Wall kids. But as far as actual battles, I’m not at all surprised that there aren’t any in this clip– the armies don’t meet until pretty late in the book and if that stuff has even been filmed yet, it can’t have finished post-production.

AFAWK, Charles Dance wasn’t due to start filming until a week or two ago, which likely means the big battles (or the Green Fork, at least) were being held back until late in filming. The trailer was likely put together a little while ago before that material became available.

Well, we all have different views but I still think Michelle Fairley looks really very different from Catelyn Stark. In this clip she is grieving sure but in her other shots the actress is much homelier and older looking that Bean too. Maybe if all the cast was ordinary looking it would be good but they didn’t go that route. I can’t help but find it disappointing (and no I’m not a fanboy I’m a woman, lol). It’s going to take a lot of adjustment.
