MGoT: EW pics in hi-res

I love these pictures, they make me even more excited for this show. I really like the stage on the helmet of the Baratheon guard, I thought that was a nice touch.

Does the Sansa image suggest they’re using Huskies or Malamutes (or whatever they are) for the Direwolves as is?

Those Stark guardsmen shields still look really cheesy compared to all the other beautiful painted ones…

Nice to get a closer look of Tyrion in the Eyrie. Love the expression on his face.

HBO…those dogs still look like dogs…with wolf coloring.

Love seeing a wolf head at the end of Neds belt in the closeup. The armor looks great! now that we see HDef.

Love Jaime’s sword! But still terribly confused with the design of the kingsquard armor. The closer and closer we get. It looks like a bunch of style that don’t work together. Leather with metal scales, plate armor. The only pieces on him that look like it fits him and is the right size is the cuirass and the clothing underneath.

I didn’t see it before in the non highdef version. But can anyone maybe think of why there is a peacock in the Eyrie hall wall above the hall door? Is it one of the stages from “Your Highness” that they changed and dressed up? The peacock looks out of place.

Beyond the small stuff they still impress. Maybe they can work out the “kinks” if they go season 2.

So i’m looking at the riders photo and it appears that Ser Vardis is leading them. This is just speculation but could Ser Vardis be filling the Blackfish role when Catelyn meets him in the mountains? It looks like that would be the scene this shot is from

Love the pics but I have one question. Where the heck is the rest of Ned’s left leg? There doesn’t seem to be anything below the top of his left boot! Whatever is on the table that is partially blocking view of it doesn’t seem to be big enough to block out the entire leg. Some of his leg, at least, still should be showing!

I am a little concerned (VERY LITTLE) with the size of the direwolves… they look like dogs atm.

They’re baby puppies at first, then grow up (fairly rapidly). The shot of Lady is clearly well before full growth has been achieved. I doubt they’ll be full size until Season 2.

Wow. Sophie Turner is just beautiful, and perfect as Sansa. Very excited to see what she brings to the character.

Michelle Fairley’s hair is what I see as auburn(reddish brown), whereas Turner’s looks reddish blond. Not that I care about the difference, she’s just so beautiful. Obviously viewers will love Sansa much better than readers did.

Btw is that Catelyn’s head at the bottom right of Robert pic? Seems like it’s right before he greets the Starks.

You’re right, Fairley’s hair is closer to true auburn. What I meant was that Sophie’s hair looks red, as opposed to the blonde she used to have… so they’ve definitely dyed her hair.

I’m extremely disappointed, I mean in the books all the characters are written down, these are totally different, they are all 3d and everything and you can see them. They don’t smell like my books either.

It’s so nice to see these in greater detail. The sets and costumes look awesome. All my fears about the costuming are pretty much gone at this point. Sansa’s cheeks no longer look so red as they did in EW (I know this really worried a few people).

Kana: hey there’s a crew guy hiding down near the bottom of the riders picture.

There is also a crew member in the picture of Jaime (all the way to the left). No matter, as I’m pretty certain these are photographs, not frames from the actually film footage.

Isaac is Bran. Maise is Arya. Sophie is Sansa. Still not crazy about Jon’s mustache, but other than that, Kit looks the part of Jon. Now to see if they can all act. I have faith they can.

I sort of which Tyrion’s hair was a bit blonder, but no matter, Dinklage will own the role of Tyrion. Michelle Fairley is Catelyn. I have no lingering regrets about losing Jennifer Ehle.

Rinso: Sean Bean still doesn’t look like a Ned to me (never did), but I’m yet to see him act the part and I trust in the man’s acting abilities.

Ditto. Plus, how can we complain about having Sean freaking Bean in our show? I suspect he will become Ned on screen. I love the look of Addy and Headey as the king and queen. They are spot on IMHO. Coster-Waldau is totally Jaime (so what if his hair is a little short, they can make it longer in season 2). The Night’s Watch characters all look perfect as well.

Which brings me to Emilia Clarke as Daenerys. I’m still uncertain about this one. It’s not even so much the actress as it is what they’ve done with her wardrobe and hair. I really hope the burlap sack is not what we see her in most of season 1. The high-def pictures allow us to see all the strands of fly-away hair. I haven’t decided yet if this makes it look more or less fake than before. I keep going back and forth on the hair color. I’m glad, however, that they didn’t literally make it silver (that would have been a travesty). I think I may just need to reserve judgment until I see it on screen.

All in all, I’m really pleased with the look and the quality. So much of it is exactly how I’d hoped it would be and I really can’t complain. Can’t wait for next Sunday!

Unless you have inside information regarding the animals used I am not convinced. I bred and raced Siberian Huskies for many years and this dog looks similar to several I bred. You may of course be right and if you are then some of my dogs looked more like wolves then I realised :)

As for needing to be broader and furrier, perhaps a thicker coat may be expected but wolves are not broad chunky heavy animals. They are somewhat lean and can go for long periods on relatively little food. I understand the Dire Wolves will be MUCH bigger then regular wolves but I would still expect them to be proportionately the same.

I dare say the look of all of the pups will change as they grow during the show.

All this of course is just my opinion thrown out there for discussion purposes ;)

I know that gambesons are effective and that they were used prominently. My point was that visually they don’t look good. I man in a gambeson looks like he’s gressed in a quilt.

Well, technically, he shouldn’t even appear in person in Season 2 until the very end where he has one scene… And if they follow the description of the book, in Seasons 3 and 4, he should have even shorter hair and a beard. But that’s nitpicking.

We already know this is the case. GRRM himself confirmed it.

I love the look of these photos. The show looks so detailed and professional (even though we see two crew members).

I think my favourite is the one with Sansa. She looks so ladylike and alone surrounded by guards, and those events (Arya, Joffrey, Sansa) on the road are for me the most pivotal in the first book.

The Dany one is painfully cheesy, even more so than the last one we had of her. As in “not going to show these pictures to people because that one will make sure they never watch it” cheesy.

Then again, I guess it’s hard to do her not looking cheesy. I think the problem isn’t so much her, though, as what she’s wearing, which is far too Conan. And somehow… fake. She’s wearing a scrap of a burlap sack in the company of nomadic horsemen… and yet is still eye-hurtingly shiny and pristine.

The other pictures all do a better job of looking real, and I hope the Dany scenes manage that too, once we’ve seen more of them.

Fantastic stuff! Love Sansa and Lady. Especially love Arya with Ned. Not too worried about the crew members in the shots. Pretty sure they’re not gonna be there in the final product.

WOW…I just now saw all the pictures…I just believe that this show will be a epic and I cant wait for it to premiere!!

Concerning the size of the wolves, if these pictures were taken on-set , than there hasn’t been any post-production(which I’m just going to assume for now, as there is a crew member in one of them). They might well increase their size digitally in PP to make them more in line with the book’s description? What you see here may not be (completely) final, I think. Not saying that they will increase their size, but they might, right?

I don’t think the whole thing looks bonkers; I like many parts of it. But the parts of it I object to are those that seem historically inconsistent with the inspirations that Martin drew from.

I mean, I like Samurai as much as the next person (yay, Shogun 2!), but I don’t think they have a place in GoT…

I already expressed most of my thoughts in the initial post on the photos, but here are some additional ones relating to the hi-res pictures (copied and pasted from the previous blog entry so it’s here as well):

Dany: I think Dany looks much better in the hi-res picture in terms of her face and expression. You can see a lot more of the detail that Emilia Clarke has brought to the character. The wig looks a bit strange though (one side of her hair is lower than the other, as though it isn’t on properly). Also, although for the purposes of the shot it looks kind of cool, the bits of hair sticking off everywhere seem oddly wiry (as opposed to just ruffled from riding). Still “meh” about her costume, but I’m not crazy-upset about it,
And…definitely no purple-ish eyes (but I’m still thinking they may add that in post-production).

Direwolf: I’d actually much rather that they used real animals than cgi ones or digitally enhanced ones. I always find the shiny, fake look that cgi animals/people have to be highly distracting. Somehow the texture never looks right, and the eyes are always cheesy.

On Dire wolves: They couldn’t get actual Dire wolves for the show (they were committed to filming The Hobbit) so the production had to settle on dogs. They are hoping to get actual Dire wolves for future seasons providing they can work it out with the Dire wolves agents.

In all seriousness using dogs as the young wolves was probably the only option they had. CGI dogs wouldn’t have looked all that great and it would have been wicked expensive.

Using real wolves could have been dangerous to the cast and crew and may have been prohibited by local or federal laws.

I think the dogs look fine as young wolves. I am curious to see how they will handle the dire wolves later on when they are more or less full grown.

About the Direwolves:

First, we need to remember that Lady was always the smallest of the litter. Yeah, still looking feral enough to make people give way when she pass by, but the pet looks will work better for viewer’s empathy when Ned is forced to apply her the King(Queen)’s justice

Second, it’s possible that HBO is trying to slow their growing as long as possible so they save themselves the trouble and cost of extensive post-production. Size is not that important during the first season. If this theory of mine holds true, I imagine Bran’s would-be killer’s doom will get a workaround. For instance, Summer tackling him so the guy falls out of the window or into the fireplace, instead riping his throat off

Whatever the case, I hope the direwolves will be really big when the time of meeting Osha comes.

I’m probably misremembering and more likely I misread and just put my own images in my head (which happens a lot) but I thought that the direwolves were more dark colored… like brownish and ghost was albino/white and it made him completely different than the other direwolves.

Pictures look even more awesome in high def. Best improvement is Catelyn, she looks stunning and dare I say it like the milf I pictured in my heads. Although the peacock is indeed a bit strange.

HBO has also finally killed the rumour of Stephen Moyer having a cameo, I always thought of it as a bullshit rumour.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on Dany’s look as well. Except for the purple eyes. I honestly am not too worried about whether or not they are purple. It seems to me that if the plan was for her eyes to be lilac like in the books, they would have had her wear contact lenses, as it would have been much easier (and cheaper) than changing their color in post-production.

No, Arya was never described as ugly. Some kids made fun of her looks, but they were just kids being mean for the sake of being mean.

She’s described as a tomboy with a longish face, and reminiscent of her aunt, which was beautiful, so no problem.

They are both pretty and cute girls, but this Sansa is taller and more ladylike. Thats enough to make her “prettier” than than dirty, scruffy Arya, i think.

What strikes me about the actresses playing Arya & Sansa is the strong resemblance in these hi-res promo shots. Details like that really make the show so much stronger. Can’t wait till the Sunday night trailer!

Sansa looks way too old in the picture. (Also the wolf is the wrong color…it shouldn’t be white).

Arya looks perfect (no doubt the scene after Micah is run down.) But Sansa looks way too old. Harder to sympathize with her when she looks like a mature girl.

I shouldn’t have put wolf in quotes in my response to Ser Hedgeknight, above. The Manganiello wolf is a full-blooded wolf, not a hybrid or a dog, and the actor can be justly proud that he bonded enough with the animal for the trainers to risk a civilian with him.

Cant tell if Arya’s line of sight is on Ned or behind his back. If it’s behind his back, it could be that her cold stare is for Sansa.

The perception of Arya’s attractiveness (or lack thereof) obviously has more to do with her manner of dress, her attitude, and her favorite activities than it has to do with any of her physical features, her long-ish face (hardly a fatal flaw) notwithstanding. The contrast between her and Sansa has as much to do with their age difference as anything: Sansa is a teen – of an age where people really start to notice that she is beautiful – while Arya is still just a little kid.

Pretty much everyone who views Arya in an unbiased context where she is being presented as a girl conclude that she is quite pretty. The courtesans she encounters in Book 4 seem quite convinced that she would excel in their trade.

Also, what’s up with people saying that Sophie Turner looks too old?! Sansa in the books starts out at 13. For the series she’s been aged up to 15. Sophie is 14. She is supposed to be tall and beautiful; it would be way out of place if she looked too young.

I’m extremely confused, and very curious as to exactly what armor you’re looking at when you talk about “samurai armor”. I might suggest you do a quick google image search for that phrase and compare it to what you see here. Personally, I see nothing even remotely close.

By the way, if we’re going to nitpick, we’d bloody well better give it the full nine yards, and note from the Catelyn/Tyrion pic in the High Hall that, from the differentiation of the angles of the various shadows, either the sun in Westeros is located, like, five feet behind that window, or the characters are being lit by a source of light that is not, in fact, the sun.

I hereby christen this as Shadow-gate.

AHA I was right! Cersei is smiling that way because she is taking someone to bed :-) I think everything looks great, while I wish the Direwolves were bigger and that Dany had purple eyes and Ned dark hair, I still think this show is going to BLOW EVERYTHING ELSE OUT OF THE WATER!

My biggest request would be that going forward press releases and marketing play up the Lord’s Houses and the books’ representation of these characters. I think the EW spread would have been better without all the lame scene descriptions and just pics of the characters with labels like “The Kingslayer”, “The Night’s Watch,” “Danaerys Stormborn,” etc. There are some great quotes and descriptions in the books, USE THEM.

Either way, i think Sophie is/looks definitely young enough for Sansa as a character. I think she looks her age (14) And that combined with the fact that she is a semi-spoiled Lords daughter will make her naivity (?) believable enough. Even her father is pretty naive coming into Kings Landing. She will also loose that naivity pretty quickly. After that, she is a prisoner, and does not really need to be of a particular age to be a depressed victim, which is basically her part in the story so far.    

You’re right, though I didn’t mistake her for Daenerys, so much as I took her birth date from the wiki and for some reason thought that most of AGOT took place in 299 AL rather than 298. Sansa has, however,been aged up to 13 for the series, and I think she looks just right for a character of her status and age. Either way, the accusation that she looked like she was 18 were befuddling. The actress is nowhere near that age.

Her age is most relevant, I think, to the degree to which she is seen as an object of sexual desire by many of the men in the series: Littlefinger, The Hound, Joffrey, Tyrion, and Marillion all spring to mind. None of them are considered pedophiles by Westerosi standards (in the way that, say, Lyn Corbray is), but by our standards that sort of thought toward a 12-year-old girl is pretty unpalatable. Reading about it, we can achieve some of the necessary cognitive dissonance required not to retch; seeing it on screen is another matter, so I’m very happy that they’ve aged up the character and that Ms. Turner looks quite mature for her age.

If you mean how do you comment on the HBO GOT forums, you must register and have a user name assigned…pretty typical stuff. The HBO forums are entitle “Talk”—go to the main GOT site and on the left hand side of the GOT home page you will see a selection of “hot” topics; click on any one of them, then click on Talk on the left and you will find a list of all current topics.

i don’t know if it’s the lights or whathever but i liked the color better in this shot rather than the on in hi-res (although the rest of it is incredible, i just liked the color better), i think it’s more fitting with the description in the books and the color michelle farlay seems to have for catelyn. Sorry for any typo, mispelling or concordance mistakes ;D

Bit late to the party but had a quick look at the pics and they look fab.

Poor Emilia though! How blinkin’ cold was she? Goose bumps all over the poor girl! Like th brooches on her outfit. I’d been trying to make them out in the lower res pics. Saw something similar today at a craft fair.

One other thing I happened to spot and it’s a *tiny* detail but I like it, are teh 3 dragon heads on the candleabra in the Eyrie. Not sure why they’d have Targaryen iconography but still pretty cool!

I was already corrected on that point an acknowledged it. Sansa is being aged for the series to 13 and is being played by a 14-year-old actress. It’s not exactly Dawson Casting. She is supposed to look mature and grown-up for her age, and is being played by an actress who looks mature and grown-up for her age. What, exactly, is the issue here?

If you disagree with the decision to age up the character, fine, that’s your prerogative. Otherwise, well, try again.

Well that settles it. I’m officially done worrying about Tyrion’s look. It’s not what I expected…big deal. Dinklage looked phenomenal.

The foremost rider in the picture with all the riders has a triangular piece of fabric pulled up over his mouth, more a Japanese look than one I’ve encountered in European history.

Just to be clear, I am not trying to rain on anyone’s parade; I am as addicted to these posts and videos as the next person. I just wanted to add my two cents worth of concerns without (hopefully) getting my head bitten off. :)

I’m fascinated by this pics. I like them all. Catelyn, one of my favourite characters, looks strong and beautiful in the Eyrie pic; another fave, Sansa, is straight out of my imagination. Jaime and Tyrion and the King, I’d love to have a cup of mead with them. Maybe not with all of them at the same time.

I’ve always liked Sean Bean, but he does indeed look a bit like he survived Rauros Falls, hiked to Westeros and started a new life there. Also, LOTR introduced this hairstyle with the hair on top of the head tied back, which I find very unflattering on a man. I truly hope Bean’s acting will overcome such quibbles and carry him even beyond his extraordinary portrayal of Boromir. Emmy nomination?…

Not only Daenerys has goosebumps, she is also worrying her nail cuticles in that pic. I noticed it because I do that a lot too. (wipes blood from keyboard) It all contributes to the theory that this is a very early stage of her voyage; she still is a scared girl, forced into demeaning clothes in the name of tradition. She is not the khaleesi yet. I trust she’ll grow fully into her role.

We did get a good look at Roberts sword in the Weapons video released a few days back and it’s certainly not a Stag.

As I said eariler it basically looks like a representation of Chtulhu though the closest thing it could be in the Ice and Fire Mythos is a Kraken.

One theory is that the sword belonged to Balon Greyjoy and Robert took it as the spoils of war.

Cersei’s wig is killing me too. It looks like something I could have bought at the cheap disguises chinese shop in the corner. She doesn’t even look blond.

This dog does look like a youngish alsatian, which is an English German Shepherd Dog. It has the lighter, more washed out coat (in color) and the more upright hind end and straighter hind legs favored by English breeders rather than the sloping hindquarters and black and tan coloring more commonly seen in the U.S.. This look is a result of some East German bloodlines coming into the breed after German reunification. The tail also seems to be carried in the typical GSD manner rather than the Husky’s tail carriage.

I’m surprised only a couple of people mentioned that Sansa’s wolf is white, when only Jon Snow’s wolf was white in the book.

I don’t think it’s nitpicky, since it was sort of a meaningful thing that Jon’s wolf was totally different than the rest of the wolves, no? The part where Jon discovers that there was an extra, albeit albino, wolf for him in the novel is the first moment where the cleverness of the coming story shines through… it’s what hooked me in and let me decide to read it the rest of the way.

Yeah, I guess. :P I actually am now doubting myself as to what color the other wolves were? I guess they could be grey/white and still not be albino. Here’s hoping that Jon’s has red eyes then. :P
