Another day, another update to the Making Game of Thrones site. This one a quote from Luke McEwan, who plays Night’s Watch recruit Rast.
Actor Luke McEwan – as the less-than-admirable Rast of the Night’s Watch – has found plenty of opportunity to defend himself on the training grounds of Castle Black. Lucky for him, fight coordinator Buster Reeves knows his greaves from his gorget (not that he’d equip poor Rast with either…). “He’s an absolute monster,” McEwan says of the sword-fighting guru. “We first got there and he’s sitting there, eating like, packets of chicken. Buster is sublime at his job. When I was in drama school, I failed stage fighting. I was terrible at it. And, after spending a day with these guys, I can do it. But on my back, I’ve got a massive cut. There’s occasionally the odd sharp rock on the floor, and there’s a scene where I get kicked in the face, and I fell backwards and cut my back right open. But it’s alright. All in the name of art, you know?”
Winter Is Coming: Sounds like good times on the set. Glad to see that actor safety is a high priority! I kid, I kid. We’ve actually heard quite a few good reports from the actors about Reeves. He’s an experienced fight coordinator and I’m excited to see how physical these fights will be. Hope you’re feeling better now Luke!

What exactly are “packets” of chicken?

It’s funny how friendly and communicative some of our bad guys have been; Conan Stevens, Luke McEwan, etc. It will be fun but difficult to hate them on the screen in 4 or 5 months time!

dizzy_34,
Whatever they are, they sound horrifying.

I think we’re going to get some real meaty fight scenes. Totally awesome.

I get the impression when Conan is in full swing as The Mountain it’ll be quite easy to be afraid… ;o)

Luke McEwan was a top guy at the Mott. Good to hear that he is enjoying the fighting (despite any cuts he may have received from the Quarry floor)
Look forward to seeing a good training battle between him and Grenn!

It’s funny, because when I was rereading all the Night’s Watch bits in the book I kept thinking how actually doing the combat scenes was going to be pretty rough for those involved. Sounds like fun as well though.

Okay, that was awesome! I never even thought about the food props… but it was very interesting. It also looked, to me, like they nailed the look of the food in King’s Landing (I’m thinking ahead to some of the lavish feasts and multiple course meals GRRM describes).
I also like all the extra random footage in this clip (e.g. quick shot of Ned & Cersei). And I really liked that Baratheon-themed candlestick holder early in the video.
LexQuote Reply
Looks like the birds on the wall are part of the Tower of the hand. I assume thats the set that Ned and Cersi are on. Who knew a food prop video could be that interesting. I can’t wait to have this series on Blueray.

Great clip from MGoT. I think it will be great to see the sunny, eastern ambiance of King’s Landing grow grayer and more winter-y as the seasons (hopefully) progress.

The food clip has some of the best behind the scenes shots we’ve seen, yet. Good video.

Brilliant. OMG thank you. I never once pictured King’s Landing as the Mediterranean. I always thought of it as dingy middle-age London, during a warm season. Not breezy or exotic like the Med. But stale and unwell and ‘grimy’… Therefore Winterfell would be the Scottish Highlands during a perpetual fall/winter.(not like the ‘arctic’ though, lol) And then when you got to Castle Black, you were REALLY at the arctic, only with forests.
Doesn’t mean I don’t think it’ll be brilliant. Very vivid, their interpretation of the settings. I liked the banquet-room scene at Castle Black (I believe) that you can see behind the burning cauldron, while they’re talking about the stew. Like the trenchers. Like the dimness/blackness/bleakness. Very cool.

Thank you, HBO!
Now, I have a urge to go to kitchen where some croissants are waitng (planned to eat the tomorrow for breakfast).
We need some close still of Ned and Cersei in Hand s office (?).
Great find Lex! I totally ignored the birds on the wall

Love the food video! It makes me wonder how they’re going to differentiate Dorne (if we get that far). King’s Landing looks beautiful. Castle Black looks aweful, as it should.

Everytime there’s a new artisans clip the adrenaline bursts out of my body. it’s that momoment just before I push the ‘play’ button, not knowing what’s about to be reveald ^^
I liked the vid very much, though I noticed he said something a long the line of Winterfell not having the money to buy all the fancy food, which I thought a little weird. Well it makes sense that Winterfell doesn’t have countless types of fruit, but I never thought of Winterfell being too poor to buy those kinds of food. It’s not like I’m upset about this or something, I just noticed it that’s all :)

Liesie,

Is there a chance they’re going to far with some of the differentiations between locales? They might not have enough “range” left to do the locations that appear in future seasons. What does Dorne look like compared to King’s Landing? If Castle Black is so crappy, how does it compare to, say, Craster’s Keep? If they’re making King’s Landing totally Mediterranean and Castle Black totally awful, will they have room to make other locations even more extreme? Or will they go in totally different directions for those, like making Dorne into Hawaii or something?
pualoQuote Reply
pualo,
I imagine you might be able to tell the difference between Castle Black and Craster’s Keep because Castle Black is a really big stone fortification and Craster’s Keep is basically a house, and they have completely different kinds of things and people in them. Just because you can describe them both as “crappy” means nothing at all; that’s just a word you’ve chosen to focus on.
Same thing for “Mediterranean” – there are many, many different kinds of terrain and architecture all over the southern European and north African coasts.

LOVING the fiberglass and real pigs featured… And agree, quite interesting thought about the Starks being poor. Think it will be nice, though I frowned a bit at first. Will add a new dimension – as will those pigs and details – that I think even GRRRM might not have thought of/shown us. Lookng forward to seing it.
And about the sets, I found the room where Ned and Cersei was talking a bit LOTR inspired – anyone agree?
Anywho – my thinking is that Dorne will be more tareg-like reminding us of the deserts of marocko, tunisia and egypt.
Brings some interesting ideas into the picture as well I think…. Dorne and Egypt?…. Pyramids next? :)
Or who knows… they might be going for swahili-rastafari layed back like the islands outside Kenya.
LivveHultQuote Reply
I’d have to go back and rewatch the vid, but I think he was talking about Castle Black not having the money to buy the more expensive foods? There was a reference to the use of goat and pork, and how they actually used real pigs, which gave the set an odor, adding to the feel of authenticity. (paraphrase)
I loved the video, though. These kinds of details are fascinating, and I was glad to see the KL sets in a different “light”, quite literally. It all looks very airy and beautiful, which I love! Maybe not how I had imagined it when reading the books, but beautiful and fitting none the less.
RahburQuote Reply
mummer,
Okay, I didn’t literally mean you couldn’t tell the difference. I just meant that you might expect more of a difference in style than might now be possible.
pualoQuote Reply
LivveHult,
I would completely get behind Dorne= Egypt or Tunisia. XD
Steve Hugh WestenraQuote Reply
I love the lavish feast scenes. The more detailed the better in my opinion. Bring on the gratuitous feasting! I don’t think it was really implied that Winterfell is poor or has crappy food, just that tropical fruit is harder to get in the colder north climate. They still have fresh greens and root vegetables along with a variety of meats.
I also don’t think doing Dorne in future seasons will be a problem. I imagine there will still be lots of tropical fruit (blood oranges!) and other items similar to what is seen here, but the presentation will have more of a Middle Eastern feel and so will the sets. Dorne has a clearly described and different culture from King’s Landing in the books. They don’t need to go “super exotic” or even more tropical or anything to differentiate.

Egypt? How so?
Personally, I feel like the Dornishmen have a bit of an Arabic vibe about them.
Half MyrishQuote Reply
Castle Black = Night watch = poor.
Winterfell = Starks = Not so poor: one of their bannermen has a silver mine, after all…
Critical GeekQuote Reply
At Winterfell they have the “glass gardens” which means they could grow some greens and herbs and stuff even if its cold outside. Plus they also have the warm spring water. It’s true they dont have a lot of fresh fruits like they do in KL, but they would have some vegetables all year round. And real winter has not yet set in. Up at the wall they would have much poorer fare, meat from farm animals and game from hunting and whatever they could forage in the forest nearby. all other grains and supplies would come up from the seven kingdoms.
OldGranQuote Reply
Half Myrish,
Either one would work just as well for me (or actually, some combination– I don’t think I would want them to just take Classical Egypt wholesale and just say that’s Dorne). I was thinking more along the lines of Arabic-speaking Egypt anyhow, and not so much Ancient Egypt (though with elements from that). I guess maybe the Tunisia idea works better that way, as it doesn’t have those same connotations.
But yeah, something Arabian or North African, or a cross between them. It’s always how (rightly or wrongly), I’ve tended to picture it in my mind.
Steve Hugh WestenraQuote Reply
pualo,
Well, then I’m not sure what your point is. You haven’t explained what the “difference in style” is that you’re talking about – or why anyone would “expect” it, when these are all places they’ve never heard of before – or why you think they won’t get it. Castle Black and Craster’s Keep are two very different kinds of place; the only thing they have in common is that they’re both uncomfortable. If what you’re saying is that the show should make Castle Black look nicer just so that people will be more impressed by the crappiness of Craster’s home later… I think that makes no sense at all. It’s an even weirder comment considering how much visual evidence we’ve already seen of how much care and imagination is going into this show– I mean, you’re making it sound as if there are maybe only half a dozen possible ways they could make places look, and from what we’ve already seen that is clearly not the case.
mummerQuote Reply
Critical Geek,
OK, but since we’re talking about what we’re going to see on screen rather than what the Starks’ bank account balance is, it’s still a reasonable summary. If you compare Winterfell to the court at King’s Landing, well, the heads of that household are (a) a Lannister and (b) a guy who has spent the country’s entire net worth several times over. Even if the Starks had that kind of cash, they’re not into conspicuous consumption– they have a reputation as being only slightly more fun than Stannis. And they live way the hell up in the North, where you can’t just get whatever you want trucked in from nearby farms and ports no matter how much you’re willing to spend.
mummerQuote Reply
I don’t think Winterfell is poor per se, they are just more pragmatic with their money investing more in their infrastructure and stockpiling for the winter. I think in one of the books they said they put 1/3 of their harvest away for winter. With that sort of quota, you can’t really splurge on lemoncakes and peacock pies.
