MGoT update: New dagger photo

We’re getting spoiled now. Another new photo from the set of Game of Thrones, this one courtesy Making Game of Thrones. It is a photo of a dagger. Might it be THE dagger?

Dagger

Winter Is Coming: That looks like it might be a dragonbone hilt to me. HBO also asks what other props or set pieces we would want to get a closer look at. For me, I’d like to see the dragon eggs. What about you guys?

I’d love to see the dragon eggs in their chest and pile of fine damasks, but maybe HBO would like to save that detail for the series. I hope they’re as super pretty and spangly as they’re described in the books. My second choice would be the heart tree. I’ll also agree that the dagger and book are probably THE dagger and THE book.

    Avalanche3319,

I’m no metallurgist, but I’m pretty sure old school rivets would have hammered ends. Modern ones have tighter tolerances than would have been possible with steel at that technology level. I’d expect to see hammered bronze rather than turned steel, is all.

As I say though, I’m no expert. Maybe they did have rivets like that in the day.

Crap it. Now I sound like a proper nerd.

    Cyan,

HBO aren’t using any existing Valyrian Steel designs, for copyright reasons or some such legal thing. Personally I’m okay with that because their version of Ice looks dicks compared to HBO’s (though their Needle is hell of nice).

    6. Tyrion’s saddle
    7. Bran’s basket (spoilerish though in plot terms – so maybe not)

Great, really getting spoiled as people said :)
I like how the release focused on the dagger, almost as if they wanted to plant the book as see how soon we notice :P we can’t be 100% sure about the dagger identity, but this phrasing on MGOT is perhaps suggestive: “A handful of telling relics …”

As to other objects, I’d like the big ones to remain unspoiled until seen on screen, and I am also sceptical about HBO showing us some of them for the same reason. I guess the iron throne is one such, possibly the heart tree and the eggs. And the Wall because of all the post-prod needed :) But give as all the rest in a steady trickle until the premiere, I say, hehe.

I know that HBO and George Martin are playing down the existence of the magical elements at the moment, maybe in the belief that too much magic would deter some people who have not read the books from engaging with the show. And even though at this point where there will be massive amounts of CGI to be done, what I really want to see is how the show’s producers envisage the Others. I know that this may not be forthcoming any time soon as they are the only supernatural element apart from the three baby dragons at the end of season 1.

I also want to see the Mountain, in full armour, in a shot where his monstrous size is obvious in relation to virtually everybody else.

And is it just me or has there been a lack of Robb Stark shots?

-iron throne w/drag0n skulls looming above
-the Hound’s helm (I have noticed there hasn’t been any Sandor shots since the raven clip. I bet they are saving any Sandor stuff for the later promos or the series itself. I’m hoping for a “little bird” or “I’m no knight” voice-over in an upcoming promo)

    winterqueen,

I would hate it if Bran’s vision got cut. It sets up so much for the following books. Its also a tool that GRRM works in that basically reminds us that we are in a land of magic…without slapping us in the face with said magic.

As much as I’d love to see the Trident and the Throneroom flashbacks, the Three-Eyed Crow dream is second only to “Promise me Ned” in importance of scenes that take place away from the main action.

Definitly 100% absolutly and without any doubt NOT the Iron Throne nor the Winterfell tree. Some things just need the context and support of the scene to really give the awesome “wow” -feeling. Though I’m 99% sure that HBO isn’t going to give pictures of these. But before me have been said some good stuff that I’d like to see too.

    -Needle
    -Hands Chain
-Hounds Helmet (but not the Hound himself)
    -Robbs…headwear
    -Lyannas tomb
    -Brans basket or saddle
    -Arakh (HD-resolution)

Also nice could be Ghost or Three eyed crow but those are probably going to get at least some CG so probably not.

I feel really dirty and spoiled… and happy.

Google “antique basket saddle” and you will see examples. I’m from Virginia and we see these occasionally bearing tiny children in so-called horse show leadline classes; they provide back support to allow tiny folks to pretend to ride, to the delight of their parents.

I actually like HBO’s restraint with the prop images so far. I would prefer to see the “big” items for the first time on the show itself. No Iron Throne vote from me.

I would second most of rorschachs ideas for future images. Good choices!

Anyone have any idea which important showd down happens in episode 5 that’d require a Mdina set? I’m going to guess Jaime & friends vs Ned, Jory, etc while Littlefinger does a runner.

    The Direwolves
    Robert’s antlered helm or hammer
    Tyrion Lannister… period
    The Iron Throne… a given

I’ve seen it and my breath was literally taken from me. Even though I was seeing it without any hollywood pixie dust and crew were wandering all around it, it still had an incredible beauty. And then a Direwolf appeared from behind it and lay down in front of it. I could have died a happy man!

You guys are in for such a treat!

BTW – I wasn’t in a scene at the Tree. The set was beside a set that I was working on and I had my lunch there.

I would like to see a picture of a direwolf that makes me go “Shit, a direwolf!!”
It is the beginning of the show….the pups. It is the feeling of a prophecy starting to tick down.
It makes you smile thinking of the kids with these huge pups of beasts. Peoples reactions.
It all kind of gets lost when they look like ordinary dogs. Not even ordinary….kind of whimpy dogs at that.
    To quote myself:

c0venant: Im a bit disapointed with Lady.
    Okay, its a pup….but still…..Its a pup. Not a pup direwolf.
How could people possibly see it is a direwolf if it looks exactly as a ordinary pup?I have a dog and it looks more as a direwolf. It is a mix between German shepherd, Rottweiler and Leonberger.
He moves just as a wolf does, shoulders up and head down. The same trot and the tail down behind it. Just like a wolf he also enjoys to jump at stuff kind of like a deer and hit them with his front paws….the way you might see a wolf hunt down a mouse. The thing I was coming to is that since he was a mix between three different breeds we didnt know exactly how big he would become.
The thing you can look at is the paws and the joints. They dont grow as much as the rest of the dog and are fairly big to begin with. The bigger the joints and paws the bigger the dog will become.
My dog had very large paws and joints and today, three years old he weighs 70kg (150 lbs). Now look at Lady again. Look at the joints and the paws. It cant be such a young pup and it wont get much bigger.
It is the same bodily differences as betweeen a grown man and a child. You cant enlarge a child to make it look like a grown man, neither the opposite. The direwolf is a fail

I want to see a direwolf! That is a huge part of the whole thing.

    c0venant,

I think the only images we have seen of Direwolves are from the 2nd or 3rd episode at the latest. I expect that by the 7th or 8th episode, they will have grown significantly, and will be much more threatening (ie Grey Wind at the battle of Whispering Woods).

Plus, when Lady is killed, she is supposed to still be this cute little pup (if partially grown), so that the viewership really feels for Ned as he sits there petting her.

Just remembered something I was told once, that extras are just living props..If that is the case then I think I would qualify to have a picture of myself posted. I know a good shot was taken of me in Stark bannerman costume by the same lady that took the recently released photos. She was taking a couple of pics of Jack Gleason between scenes,he was posing with a large Sherlock style pipe. I happened to be standing beside them and she asked me to pose for a moody left side head and shoulders shot.It was at the Redhall set the same day the Ned and Arya and Sansa with wolf pics were taken.I know its a long shot but if HBO have it on file somewhere I would really love to see it.

Over at MGot Steve Marzolf (is he working with PR at HBO or something?) just commented on the dagger-post. If he is to believed we’ll get some more pictures soon, although not of dragon eggs or the Iron throne.

Dragon eggs and the Iron Throne – You guys don’t mess around, do you? Some of this stuff is still top secret (we have to hold back some big surprises, you know), but there are a few items on your list that you may be able to cross off soon enough …

    All of the above.

Lemon Cakes – with an added recipe! A Game of Thrones Cookbook any one?
    Needle
    Ice
    Jory!
A tourney scene – someone being “un-horsed”! (though it would be a stunt actor)
Dragon Eggs – but think this would be awesome to leave until the series is shown.

Rimshot, what a lunch that would be to sit and look at that tree.

Hey Guys thanks for the comments. I was actually done for the day and I had my lunch and was looking around for somewhere to eat it and thought I would chance sitting by th Heart Tree. I was fine for a while but then I was asked to move as my lunch may upset the Direwolf!

It really is incredible looking. I stayed on for a while to watch them film a scene with a certain very big guy and a certain crazy lady but then I had to go.

I must admit I’d love one more extra gig this season to finish it all off but if I don’t get any more that’s fine as I’ve had a brilliant experience.

    Roll on next year!
