Speculation

Happy Holidays from WiC!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of our readers and Game Of Thrones fans everywhere! We hope Santa brought you everything that was on your list this year.

But what about our Thrones wish list? In what has now become a Christmas tradition on this site, we want everyone to post their Game Of Thrones Christmas wish list. What do you most want to see in this coming year? Here’s mine:

3. An Emmy nom for Peter Dinklage.
2. Record-breaking ratings for the first episode.
1. A season two greenlight!

So, dear reader, what is on YOUR Thrones Christmas wish list?

  • 3. Season two greenlight
    2. Record-breaking rating for Season one
    1. Publishing of Dance with dragons in January 2010:)

  • I am quite confident about the second season greenlight, so I have great ratings for season one at the top of my list :) And, same as Ana Carolina: ADwD, naturally :)

  • 5. Jeff Bridges signs on to play The Blackfish
    4. Emmy noms for actors, costumes, VFX, director, and/or show
    3. Emmy wins for any of those categories
    2. ADWD released in April
    1. Season 2 Greenlit

Honorable Mention: Joe Campo gets on the show!

  • Bit late to the party but merry christmas and all that nonsense.

My biggest wish? That the show will be the best thing tv has ever seen. I’d rather have weak ratings, no emmy’s and an alas no season 2, but that it’ll be remembered as an even better Firefly. Of course, quality and succes usually go hand in hand with HBO, but if I had to choose it would be the quality.

And of course ADWD, but that’s also on my 2012 list just in case.

  • I agree with everything you’ve got up there, Winter.

My only addition is the option to purchase and/or subscribe to the show online that doesn’t require a cable package purchase or US residency.

The only thing stopping it at this point is HBO’s relationship with US cable companies.

  • Tv related first wish, great ratings for season one.
    Books related first wish, ADWD.
Casting related first wish(es)… Bridget Reagan, Robert Carlyle, Ciaran Hinds, Damian Lewis, Zeljko Ivanek, Brad Dourif, Garret Dillahunt, Luis Tosar and Ian McShane.

  • I want GoT to be a huge success, become part of pop culture, be mentioned on ESPN the way BE, The Wire, and Sopranos are. I want everyone who has come in and out of my life over the past 8 years whom I have talked about the books like a crazed fan boy to, and who did not read it, to hear about the show, watch it, love it, think about me and say “dude was right”.

  • 1. A Dance with Dragons
    2. Monica Bellucci cast as Melisandre
    3. Excellent ratings for season 1
    4. A Dance with Dragons

  • 1)HUGE ratings, making sure it’ll get all 7, or how many it takes, seasons
2)Season 2 with bigger budget for LotR-scope battle scenes
3)Tricia Helfer or Morena Baccarin as Melisandre
    Not so much, huh ;)

  • 1. Emmy nom for Sean Bean. I’m not as confident in Dinklage’s strange English (?) accent to sustain suspension of disbelief over the haul of an entire series as I once was. Though I could be wrong. I hope I am. Most eyes will be on Sean, however.

    2. I’m pretty damned sure season 2 will be greenlit, but I’m not so confident that I won’t drop it into the wish bucket.

    3. ADWD by April.

  • 1- Second the Emmy nomination for Sean!
2- huge success for the series
3- Agree that we need to see roles for Robert Carlyle, Ciaran Hinds, Damian Lewis, Zeljko Ivanek, and Ian McShane. Love these guys!
4- (long shot)…….Sean to miraculously come back for season two! LOL!

  • Happy holidays and a long life for WIC!!!
For the show: if it’s half as good as the books, i’ll be glad!

  • Steven Scott: Why do people keep suggesting very dark complected people like Bacarin or Belluci for a character with porcelain skin?

Because Melisandre’s complexion is not a plot point. Anyone can play her. Except maybe Kristian Nairn.

  • 1. That Sky in UK will show GoT at the same time as HBO in US.
    2. ADWD by April and a great Polish translation by the end of the 2011 (just in case I struggle with reading it in English)
    3. Seson 2, 3, 4, 5 …

By the way…I am visiting my family in Poland and today I have seen the trailer on Polish HBO. It was a first time I saw it in TV and not on my laptop – it was great, even though, it was the shortes one.
The good news is that it will be shown in POLAND :D. The bad news is (but I’m just guessing) it may not be aired before Summer. They start airing BE in January…so it’s like 3-4 months gap, right?

Sorry for my English…Xmas drinking with friends and family ;)

  • 1. Game of Thrones turns out to be an ABSOLUTELY awesome series, even better than I expect;
    2. Season two greenlit and made quickly;
    3. …Game of Thrones in April also HERE in Poland. I can’t wait anyway! :/

  • Ivan: 1)HUGE ratings, making sure it’ll get all 7, or how many it takes, seasons
2)Season 2 with bigger budget for LotR-scope battle scenes
3)Tricia Helfer or Morena Baccarin as Melisandre
    Not so much, huh

Hear, hear on 1 and 2, for Melisandre, go to my answer to Steven Scott´s comment…

Steven Scott: Why do people keep suggesting very dark complected people like Bacarin or Belluci for a character with porcelain skin?

Bridget Reagan perhaps? She has porcelain skin, natural red hair (she won´t have to use a wig), reasonably known, Irish descendant(with family there), in the right age,28,available(I think) and affordable(I hope so).

  • Slynt,
    Very much looking forward to A Dance with Dragons, but I wonder if HBO has done the math. If they do a novel every year, that would 2011=A G of T, 2012 = A C ofK, 2013 = A S of S, 2014= A F of C, 2015 = A D of D, 2016 = Book 6, 2017 = Book 7.
If A D of D, comes out this year, it may be possible that Book 6 will be out by 2016. But it will be impossible for for Book 7 to come in time to go on HBO. Just saying

  • Fire And Blood:
Because Melisandre’s complexion is not a plot point. Anyone can play her. Except maybe Kristian Nairn.

I agree but in Monica Belluci´s case, she is 46 now, after 5 seasons, she will be 51, I repeat, 51, too old even for the magnificient Monica, too old to play as our beloved-hated red priestess, Lady Melisandre of Asshai.
As you all know by now, maybe not, my first pick, money aside, Eva Green, the real one, the they can pay for, the one and only Bridget Regan

  • Merry Christmas, everyone!

    1. Game of Thrones to be an awesome TV show
    2. Excellent ratings and critic reviews
    3. Season 2 renewal
    4. A Dance with Dragons
    5. For Game of Thrones to influence TV the way other HBO and AMC shows have so that fantasy and sci-fi might be given more attention in the TV world

  • Oh, forgot:
4)GoT success to inspire some other network, preferably Showtime to make a Wheel of Time series :)

  • OT
Anna Trebunskaya from DWTS as melisandra.
    She’s 28.
    Best red hair ever.
    Hot as R’hlors flames.
Her Russian accent would be good cause Mel is exotic and should have a different accent.

  • 1. A release date for A Dance With Dragons.
    2. A Clash of Kings greenlight
    3. A Game of Thrones to really be good enough for that greenlight.

  • Merry Christmas to everyone and I wish for like those previously mentioned.

    1.) ADWD
    2.) Massive ratings for GoT
3.) Emmy noms for everyone, especially Sean Bean
4.) Greenlit for 2nd and 3rd season (had to one up you all)
5.) A non-UK (exception: Natalie Portman), exotic, mysterious, beautiful and dangerous feme fatale for Melisandre, who must also be a talented actor.
    6.) ADWD
7.) Best actor Oscar for Ms. Portman

  • As much as I want to see ADWD published soon, it’s #2 on my list. At the top is such an overwhelming success for the TV show that it enters the vernacular the way that the Sopranos did, that it is the subject of watercooler conversations in every office in America and stays that way until the final season has come and gone. To become an intergral part of the zeitgeist and to see the novels studied in English literature classes alongside Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn.

    How’s that for ambition?

Short of that, Christopher Lee as Qyburn and Bridget Regan as Asha. And someone still in her twenties for Melisandre and teenagers for Ygritte, Brienne, Margery, and Meera. As well as Emmy nominations for Sean Bean (Lead Actor), Michelle Fairley (Leading Actress), Peter Dinklage (Supporting Actor for Season 1), and Lena Headey (Supporting Actress).

  • The Darkstar: Anna Trebunskaya

Quite OT dude, what is her acting resumê or acting studies? None, other than being a superb dancer…I don´t want to be rude but what´s next, Bristol Palin for Asha????

  • Ikertzeke:
but what´s next, Bristol Palin for Asha????

Please don’t think that. That could possibly mean that Justin bieber would be Patchface. oh oh oh i know i know.

  • Cyan:
Please don’t think that. That could possibly mean that Justin bieber would be Patchface. oh oh oh i know i know.

Man, if that means rocket-ratings we should think about it… ha ha. But seriously, HE has to die… stable boy maybe…ha ha

  • 1. The whole Targaryen story line is nailed.
    2. Kit Harrington, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams nail it and become superstars.
    3. 8 million viewers for first episode. an average of 5-6.
    4. Season 2 of 12 eps.
    5. emmy noms: series, writing, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke.

and most of all: ADwD release!

  • 1. Season 2 greenlight. I almost take this for granted, but it’s still the most important thing.

    2. Solid ratings. It does not have to be the next True Blood, ratings-wise. Just strong enough that we can feel confident in at least three seasons.

    3. Nothing really comes to mind. Emmy nom for Bean or Dinklage would be cool, but not a big deal, i guess. I’m thinking the nominations would be more likely for season 2 or 3.

  • She did just say, “I think I’m going to do the next one as well,” yeah?

As stated before, different than I initially imagined, I like her. Especially seeing her in motion here, while she’s younger there are aspects that do hit what was in my head for Osha.

  • Winter Is Coming,

Also, did you catch at the end that she’s already got S2 planned in her schedule? It starts when he asks her what she’s working on next. Around 8:55? She says “The next series,” which I believe has already been established as meaning “Season.” If that’s right, it sounds like filming for S2 will begin in Spring (presumably after a Green Light is announced? Knock on wood…)

  • Yeah, just Google “Series means Season” and you get a lot of responses that this is the case in the UK. I’m sure someone has brought it up here before.

  • paulgude,
I believe she’s the one that GRRM was referring to when he said something like “There’s one bit of casting that was really different from how I had pictured the character, but she’s so good that I may be writing the character differently from now on.”

Liked the interview a lot. I’ve never seen her in anything but the Harry Potter movies, and I wished she’d been given more to do there.

  • Ikertzeke,

    Monica at 46

Will she really age that much in 5 years?

I still think she is the right age looks wise, mid 30’s and has an aura that not many actresses have. Eva green like many hollywood actresses is too skinny and too young. Also she’s not exactly exotic.

Gong Li was another brilliant mention for the role, too big an actress though.

  • 1. ADWD
    2. I want the TV series to be good. I want to see them capture the feel of the books without making gratuitous stupid changes (like they did in The Two Towers with Faramir, or Sam turning around and going home). I hope the actors do well and they script the scenes well… especially Arya’s since she’s my favorite.
    3. The show to succeed so we get season 2.
    4. Joe on the Show.

  • 1. A DANCE WITH DRAGONS (it will be released when AGOT starts airing, believe me).
    2. Huge ratings and Emmy nominations for the show and it’s actors.
    3. Superb special effects ( direwolves, dragons, mammoths, wildlings, the others, battles etc).
    4. That AGOT turns out to be as important for fantasy as StarTrek was for science fiction.
    5. Fantastic actors being signed for season 2.

  • Any of the following would do me nicely:

    1. The powers of a warg.
    2. A direwolf pup.
    3. A sword forged in Valyria, + scabbard.
    4. A secret passageway that connects my house to the Red Keep.
    5. To get on the show.

  • Yeah, just Google “Series means Season” and you get a lot of responses that this is the case in the UK. I’m sure someone has brought it up here before.

It’s kind-of the rule that it used to be ‘series’ in the UK and ‘season’ in the USA. However, ever since American shows started airing in the UK regularly back in the 1960s, ‘season’ has become much more common here as well, especially since VHS and DVD box-sets of American shows called ‘Season 1′, ‘Season 2′ etc. Today the two terms are interchangeable.

  • 0. ADWD
    1. GoT will be the best tv show I’ve ever seen
    2. My friends will agree
    3. The ratings will be so good that they order several seasons immediately
    4. We get several really good actors for seasons 2+
    5. Tower of Joy will be included

I love how Natalia acts as if season 2 is basically a sure thing.

  • I would like to join in with all the wishes posted already. Merry christmas to all of you and a happy GOT year 2011!!

  • Ana Carolina S.,

Agreed ADWD – lets face it, unless himself actually does some writing HBO will catch him up pretty soon, and have to finish the story themselves!!? Also the DVD box set of GoT as I live in the middle of nowhere, with no Cable and no Sky subscription – guess xmas 2011 will be the earliest I`ll get to see Thrones?

  • Merry Christmas, everyone!

Hmm. My wishes are mostly the same as everyone else’s (season 2, to be impressed by s1, ADwD, good ratings, etc).

To keep it interesting, here are some others:

    1. They cast a suitable, talented, unknown actress as Brienne and don’t pretty up the character.
    2. The Dothraki turn out to be awesome in the actual show, they succeed at capturing my imagination and all my fears are completely unfounded.
    3. Whoever is cast in the wished-for second-season, they are enthusiastic about the project and fall in love with their characters the same way we all have.

  • Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone!

My wish is that all this time Roose Bolton has been cast and filming certain his scenes in secret for season 1.

  • gintim,
I live in a country where HBO isn’t available, so to watch it next day after airing I’ll torrent it (there are places where they put new episodes in 720p several hours after release in US), as I do with all other shows I watch, but I’ll of course will buy blu-ray as soon as it’ll be available. Personally I think this is a problem of outdated media distribution system, failing to keep up with the progress, I just can’t understand why so many media is “meant to be” US-only, why they are putting these artificial barriers for people from other countries, and I believe that justifies torrenting.

  • 5) An sex scene with sansa and the hound prefferably in doggy position. If ppl like it they can add one with tyrion in hound’s place in season 3.(Sansa fanboy here..)
4)Joseth campo finally gets a role in season 2 as a dentist of the north and in his first scene is trying to fix Ygritte’s teeth.
3)G.RR.Martin decides to finish not only DotD but the other 4 books also in 1 month so he could brake a world record.
    2)G.RR.Martins brakes the world record
1)Instantly greenlight from Hbo for 7 seasons and 3-4 extra ones.

  • My only wish is a verry quick distribution of the show on french TV (the best would be at the same time as HBO)!!! Thanks to WiC who saved a lot of my days from boredom this past year!!

  • My ASOIAF wishes:

    1. A Dance with Dragons! (featuring a very detailed Theon torture/comeuppance scene. Heck, lets have a Greyjoy genocide, in which only Asha survives and gets with Dany for hot, empowered lesbian love on dragon-back…)

    2. I am cast in HBO’s Game of Thrones. As Asha Greyjoy. Heh.

    3. Game of Thrones is the #1 show of the year. Emmies and ratings galore…

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday!

GOT Christmas Wish #1 That the show is a good as we all hope it is!

My mom was so cute yesterday. She was all apologetic because she looked all over for a Game of Thrones calendar and couldn’t find one.

  • reedgirl,

All very interesting wishes coming from a Reed. If they age up Meera, it could be a threesome. (Sorry, Bran. You’ll have to get a crush on some other girl.)

OT, but why do the Reeds have such a bastardly name (Snow, Rivers, Stone, etc.) when they are clearly highborn?

(…as highborn as one can get, being from a swamp. Maybe they give a nobility title to anyone who manages to have a surname.)

Okay, maybe they just fall under the “Not highborn but well-respected” list. But I always thought the name sounded curious.

  • 1. A Dance with Dragons
    2. Season two greenlight!
    3. Emmy nom for Best Series-Drama

And basically for the show to be excellent beyond our wildest dreams.

  • gintim: Ana Carolina S.,
guess xmas 2011 will be the earliest I`ll get to see Thrones?

This post will probably get deleted.

Why don’t you just torrent it like everyone else who doesn’t have HBO? Then you’ll get to see it when it comes out, and besides, not like you’re not going to buy the DVDs anyway, right ? :)

  • About Yea High,

The Reeds are so high up on the food-chain, they don’t need fancy surnames. The frog-eating/swamp-living is just to keep the lesser mortals (read: shallow, short-sighted, ultimately doomed Westerosi) away! You’ll see it happen when they whip out their ‘Children of the Forest’ t-shirts and get their Ents on the move… ;)

In all seriousness, the Reeds do appear to be the ‘mystics/ethereal mortals’ of the Seven Kingdoms. On my second read of CoK I started to wonder if Howland Reed could warg. It’s mentioned that Howland’s ‘intervention’ was the only reason Eddard survived the fight with Arthur Dayne at the Tower of Joy. Now I am assuming a lot – that Howland is small like his children, and not necessarily a warrior with Dayne’s/Eddard’s prowess. If he warged into something that Dayne did not expect, it might count for the vague description of Howland’s assistance at the ToJ. Then again, he might have thrown his frog-net over Dayne and Ned simply stuck him through before he got himself stuck-through.

(Although the Reeds are my favorites, at 5’11″/178cm tall, there’s no way I’d ever get the role of Meera. The threesome would be a-okay with me though – plenty of room on Drogon’s back for a few more consenting adults…)

Ofttimes I have sat and tried to picture how the Tower of Joy sword fight played out.

I always imagined that the Kingsguard in their arrogance, underestimated the little Crannogman (lacking armor, and armor-penetrating weaponry) and Reed seeming like a wise and cunning man took advantage of this. Having the advantage of speed and mobility, would have kept a clear distance if assaulted by one of the Kingsguard and probably kept on the edges of the fight, striking sparingly and opportunisticly, aiming to throw his opponents off balance to give the others an advantage

  • Blackfish Blues,
whoops, sorry, in my enthusiasm I accidentally posted my wish list for the coming DECADE :D

For the coming year, here are a fangirl’s wishes:

    – A charismatic, ironic and handsome actor for the Blackfish.
    – Maege Mormont! An Imelda Staunton type
    – Discovering they put the Tower of Joy as a flashback in S1, with Julian Sands in an uncredited cameo as Arthur Dayne.
    – A season 1 I can truly like (little doubt about it)
    – Announcing S2 and maybe 3.
    – Lots of costumes and banners I can copy and bring to conventions :D
    – Everything all the others said!
