Filming for the first season of Game Of Thrones is nearing an end. The final day of scheduled filming is Dec. 18. With less than two weeks to go, the final scenes are being shot now.
Last week, we had reports of filming at Audley’s Castle. Well, after many days and nights of filming there, it seems the filming is at an end. This morning they began taking down the campsite set erected by the castle on the shores of Strangford Lough.
Similarly, it seemed that filming at Castle Ward had also concluded as recent visitors to the location had indicated that much of the filming equipment was gone. This conclusion was further backed up by a tweet from Kristian Nairn (Hodor) who indicated he had finished filming his scenes. However, it seems there is yet some scenes left to shoot there as extras were recently called to the location for more filming. Whether this was the original plan or not, I don’t know.
It is possible what they are doing is filming pick-ups. If they are filming pick-ups at this point, that would seem to indicate that they are on, or ahead of, schedule. Good to hear as I was worried the snow and general bad weather in Northern Ireland may have caused some delays. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.
At this point, it seems likely that many of the characters we still have yet to see (Tywin, Shae, Shagga, etc.) would be filming now, or just recently finished. Hopefully that means in a few weeks time we will get some stills, or even video, of these characters.
UPDATE (12/8/10): Our source indicates that the filming at Castle Ward is not being done on the Winterfell set. They have redressed the location and are now using it as Tywin’s campsite. Yesterday, they filmed Tyrion’s arrival to camp and the presentation of the mountain clans to Tywin. The fact that they’re using Castle Ward for Tyrion’s arrival and not Redhall Estates seems to indicate a change in location from the book. If you recall, Tywin was located at the Crossroads Inn when Tyrion first encounters him and Redhall Estates was the location used to film other inn scenes.
It seems likely they may have compressed these scenes and have just had Tyrion’s first encounter with Tywin happen at the battle camp, not the Crossroads Inn. If that is the case we can assume the rest of the scenes that take place at the battle camp will be filmed today. Possibilities include Tywin battle planning with his officers, the post-battle meeting between Tywin and Tyrion or, maybe even Shae’s first “encounter” with Tyrion.

Hard to believe the filming is almost over. Jeez, what are we going to talk about in the new year all the way until April!?
I’m really looking forward to seeing Tywin and Osha in post production. It’ll be nice to see some full length trailers as well, which I would guess are going to start coming in January.

Grinbomb,
Do not worry, we will always find something to talk about.
At least, HBO will start marketing campaign for the series. And hopefully we would have a lot of stills and photos to discuss about.
I just wanna ask have we figured out what scene they were shooting at Audley s castle?

OT, but holy crap the stableboy on the cast page looks young! I thought the kid would be middle to late teens. That kid doesn’t look any older than Maise. Seeing a little girl stab a young man is one thing, seeing her kill another little kid is gonna be just brutal….

Yes, Kit Harrington was back for a few days starting the 28th November, Aidan Gillen was back for a couple of days yesterday, and Eugene is back on the 13th. Sounds like pick-ups. Being on schedule is good after the weather we’re having!

izakmo,
He looks somewhat older now, also chubbier and with the hair more curly.
The Rabbit,
Agreed! we always did. Seemed like the Northerners’ camp. Robb’s forces before the Green Fork?
Hear Me RoarQuote Reply
Hear Me Roar,
Yeah, from all the reports coming in here, only the Northern banners were mentioned. It is Robb s host, no doubt about it, but where?
At Moat Cailin?
Just before the Green Fork?
Or after the Whispering Wood?

Truer words were never spoken. The cold is really starting to settle in here in NYC, and even without the anticipation, April seems impossibly far away.

OT but for those who followed our discussion of Boardwalk Empire, it apparently finished strong on Sunday, making it the second most popular HBO show ever (behind True Blood) according to an article today on EW.com, and that is against the daunting competition from Sunday football. (Remember that HBO computes its ratings from its perspective differently from the standard ratings folks when it suits them, including not only the second showing on the same night but also other viewing opportunities.)
Bodes well for costume epics (BE) and fantasy (TB) in that time slot.

DH87,
BE costumes were fabulous…the period music , sets..
Gee, do you think sometimes we worry too much ?

@ The Rabbit & HMR
I put some info on this in another thread but will be useful to re-add here as its still current info…
The battle camp was indeed for the Northerners and I believe for them alone as all banners that I’ve heard of displayed were northern/stark loyal houses (think ideas or themes on Mormont, Hornwoods, Cerwyns, Stark itself, what I beleive to be a re-imagined/streamlined Umber banner, aswell as what I hear may be karstark motif’ed armour) added all to the look of the camp being rougher/rustic in feel then something that might be associated with the pride-filled Lannisters.
I’m not sure what all scenes or passages of the book were shot at the camp, but can say that some at least involved whiskers and a she-wolf… so go figure which battle the camp was based around (at least once anyways).
There are some battle scenes still to be filmed @ Castleward this week, some of which involve clansmen…

obsidian,
Absolutely!
But we are all so hopeful, so invested….Until we start seeing those big ratings numbers roll in, for the first few episodes, we are bound to worry.
I’m worried that the GOT family relationships will be too complex for the casual folks to follow…that no one male star will break out of the magnitude of a Don Draper or Eric Northman to keep women interested enough to give the show a chance to work its magic.
I’m worried that those who try episode 2, 3, or 4 will be hopelessly lost and give up, or that those who want to read along in the books (like many TB fans wanted to catch up with the original, short, simple novels) will be overwhelmed by A GAME OF THRONES and pass…
DH87Quote Reply
Just speculation, but it seems like it could be useful to film more than one battle scene at a time. If you have to get together an army of extras and make them look like northerners, might as well get a couple battles out of them.

The Rabbit,
Hush! Do you want them to give away Robb’s troop movements to the Lannisters??

As if this story could be less brutal.

With season one filming winding down and fans being treated to the great trailers and the stunning “making of” video of the past two weeks, it seems like alot of us are thinking what next?
Its been a while since I’ve seen this discussed, so I figure its time to revisit it.
HBO if you are listening, I want to implore you to consider keeping us rabid with a few weekly webisodes as we suffer through the long winter wait prior to season one. They can be inexpensive if done right and can generate alot of web buzz. BSG and even HBO’s own True Blood have emplyed this tactic in the past to the appreciation of fans.
The question I have to all of the posters here is if indeed HBO decided to webisode it up, what would make the most sense?
Would it be something current but not in season one or the books? Perhaps a lead up to the prolouge with members of the Night’s Watch dealing with Wildling activities and strange happenings in the Haunted forest. My favorite idea would be using the Stark kids for some light Winterfell hijinks. Something to give new viewers a sense of the setting while giving old-time readers a great new treat with character’s we know and love so well.
Could they go with a flashback like the Battle of the Green fork? Perhaps Robert’s Rebellion within the Walls of King’s Landing?
What about something like the Hedge Knight?
I realise that some of these ideas might be a bit expensive for something like a webisode, but others (like the Stark kids) would be very doable with existing sets and cast members with a relatively lower pay grade.
Do any of you have other suggestions for HBO?

was lucky enough to be onset yesterday at Castle Ward, and without giving too much away, Tywin’s camp was suitably impressive. Also overheard some post-battle dialogue between Tywin and Tyrion which was pretty cool. Reaffirms my feelings that the story is in great hands.
There were Starks, mountain men and Lannisters all huddled round the heaters too. Not sure if thermal undergear was standard issue for Lannister Guards, but it certainly should have been…

Speaking of flashbacks. IF they are going to implement flashbacks in the series, then I am certain that we will see the famous Brothers Celgane-flashback. I would love to see that on screen. Do it, HBO!
