GRRM confirms his appearance at winter TCA panel

In his latest blog post, George R. R. Martin confirms that he will be heading to LA to appear on HBO’s Game Of Thrones panel at the winter Television Critics Association press tour. He also teases an exciting announcement or two.

I have an exciting announcement as well. I am heading to LA too, to cover HBO’s Game Of Thrones panel! More details will be forthcoming as to what exactly our coverage will entail. But I wanted to share the good news. Many thanks to HBO for allowing me to attend this industry event. I’m really looking forward to meeting GRRM, David and Dan. And of course getting to hear all the exciting Thrones news firsthand!

Probably more like an early 2nd season announcement or something. Which is more likely than a Dance of Dragons announcement. :)

That’s well deserved Winter! Has anyone else done half as much to promote the show?

I’m pretty sure that George hopes that ADWD is ready to announce at that time. The other? I’m hoping for some Dunk & Egg adaptation, but Fevre Dream would be nice as well.

If he announces that A Dance with Dragons is done there, wouldn’t he technically be breaking his promise that he would post that he was done, the moment he was done, on his Not A Blog website?

Not that I would mind, if the book is done, I’ll be happy… but still, if it “is” done, he should just announce it now and let us rejoice

And I totally forget to congratulate Winter! You deserved this big time man, very nice. And another great sign from HBO in knowing how much free press they get via this site, almost every online article links to this website. Very considerate of them to invite you.

But the important question is: do you have to buy your own planeticket?

He says that there “might have an exciting announcement…Maybe two”

I’m guessing, as other people have stated, that its probably just a Season 02 announcement. Maybe the “maybe two” means that he finished aDwD. He brings in the “maybe” because he’ll probably finish it just before leaving for the plane, and wouldn’t have time to update the Not A Blog… hey a man can dream right?

Announcement #1 is that GRRM has DwD completed.
Announcement #2 (if available) is a release date/eta for DwD (depending on how much time the editors/publicists/printers need to complete the product).

    Both are my preference!

So, Winter Is Coming.. to Los Angeles! Hurrah, and much deserved.

George could announce that ADWD is done on his website an hour before he makes such an announcement in public and keep that promise. If he turns the manuscript into the publishers in January the book could be out by April. But yes, the adaptation of some other work is a more likely announcement.

What I WANT the announcements to be:
#1 Confirmation of Season 2 Greenlight
#2 aDwD is completed and submitted to be released alongside GoT S1

I am really scared to get my hopes up, but I can’t think of anything else but ADWD. All the other announcements talked about before do not need to wait until January.

Grats Winter! It’s great to see all your time and work paying off.

    As to “the announcement”:
George has to know that the first thing we all are going to think about is aDwD being done, so why would he announce he has an announcement unless he is truly almost done.

Or he thinks we all haven’t endured enough pain and heart break already.

    Congrats!

The second it’s done he puts it on his blog, or probably main website like he did last time.

Except that last time, he announced AFFC was completed at a convention appearance. He timed it so his website was updated with the news roughly around the same time.

I think GRRM is certainly hoping that he might be able to announce ADWD is done. He can announce it more than once, after all. As long as he does it first on the website as promised, he should avoid rancour.

Certainly I wouldn’t advise going back on that prior promise (which has been made multiple times) to announce it on his blog and website before anyone else.

I bet the “one” announcement is not the greenlight of the second season, as there does not seem to be any point in making that decision right now. Probably something to do with one of his other projects.

The “maybe two” sounds like ADWD IF it’s finished by then.

Also, I think if one of two WASN’T that ADwD is finished, then he would have said so, since he wouldn’t want to have to deal with the disappointed fanrage when the announcements are made. I’m with Paul though– the second is most likely to do with ADwD, and so it will be announced IF it’s finished.
Even if he doesn’t finish it for the panel though, the fact that he’s even contemplating an announcement by that date seems to suggest that it’s very very nearly almost complete, which is still pretty damned exciting. XD

    Steve Hugh Westenra,

HBO seems to be entertaining the idea of moving to a non-subscriber model, but I’m not sure if it will be fast enough for Game of Thrones:

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/hbo_big_drama_ydYr3QmMaHOtLLxv9bUrMP

This is the depressing part of the above article:

“Before any radical change is offered to viewers, Bewkes will first see how a new product, HBO Go, fares in tandem with pay-TV partners.”

In case you’ve forgotten what HBO Go is, that’s the online service that you need to be an HBO *cable* subscriber to access:

    http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/17/hbo-go-the-best-online-video-service-i-cannot-use/

I’ll keep harping on this until the show premiers. HBO has fans from all over the world following the progression of this show on Winter is Coming. Then, all of a sudden, folks are going to be shut out because their countries don’t have HBO cable subscriptions. There will be no legal way for them to continue this experience.

In this age of technology, that’s just a sad state of affairs.

    Adam Whitehead,
Didn’t know that actually, so there is a little reason to get our hopes up. But let’s be serious: how many times didn’t he say he would have a big announcement and it was a futile one like the statues or a con he would be attending etcetera… I don’t blame him, because I believe he really gets excited by that stuff but he gets a lot of hopes with making those statements. On the other side, I do remember the last time he said he had a big announcement he also stated that it definately would not be ADWD and he didn’t do that this time.

It makes perfect sense for him to announce ADWD in January, so its release date will be in the vicinity of the show’s premiere. I don’t remember where I read it (probably one of GRRM’s interviews), but the amount of time between the completion of the book and the actual release is ~3 months.

I have to turn towards the opinoin that the annoucements or at least one of them is about DWD. GRRM surely knows by now that if he says something like that, raging nerdcommunity will surely immediately think that the book is finished. So lately when he has said that something surprising is coming, he has added that it’s not about DWD, and alas, now he hasn’t said anything. So I have to believe that something about DWD is coming. Though it could be anything, so I wait eagerly but don’t expect too much.

Also WiC, I’m turning yellow from jealousy. But congratz, you have deserved it. Got good camera? Or any idea if you even have permission to take photos?

    Congrats WiC.

Since it’s a HBO panel I’m thinking any announcements GRRM makes would have to be something to do with his relationship with HBO.

So if for example it was that “Fevre Dream” was getting a TV adaptation then it would have to be HBO that was doing it as they would hardly let him announce it on their panel if it was going to be on STARZ.

However I doubt GRRM would be the one announcing anything directly to do with the series. Start Date, green light for Season 2, big casting announcement would all be done by D+D I think.

ADWD being finished is of course different as I’m sure HBO would be very happy for GRRM to announce that.

    Edit
Just looked at GRRMs actual post and the way it’s written his announcements could be at the book signing or the BWB meeting rather then the Panel so could still be non GoT/HBO related.

Apologies if someone already explained this, but GRRM didn’t actually say he’d be making the exciting announcement(s) at the TCA panel. He just said “that day”.

Only reason I mention it is that since the panel is for TV critics only, it would be kind of an odd place to announce a book release– not to mention that he’s sort of said he’d do that on his blog first(*). So if he’s talking about making an announcement online on the same day (which also happens to be the day of a planned BWB event), the odds are slightly better that it’s actually about the book.

(* I’m not sure he actually did say that. What he definitely has said is that when he does announce it on his blog, it’ll be unmistakable, so people shouldn’t interpret any post that doesn’t actually say “the book is done” as implying that the book is done.)

Having a Facebook page is great (although there’s several already), but the producers have a reasonable chance of seeing something if it’s posted here, possibly moreso in the casting threads on Westeros.org.

    Congrats Winter!

This is the first site I visited after getting into the books last year, and it’s still my favorite. You do a great job at providing up to the minute info, and the community here is much more friendly to newbie fans than some of the other sites. You’re going to be bombarded come Spring!

**And I’m crossing my fingers that GRRM’s announcement will be that ADwD is finished, but I have a feeling it will be about Wild cards, or figurines, or roleplaying dice, or something else I don’t care a bit about.**

Make sure to get your books signed!

“[w]hen A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is finished, I will post that news here. The moment I finish the book, I will log on and make the announcement. You guys will be the third ones to know, right after Parris and my publishers.”

Calm down, folks. The announcement he makes at some press conference that he simply teases us with is not the announcement that Dance is complete. He’s already promised us that we’re going to hear about that completion before anyone else, so whatever these announcements are, they’re not the big one.

I trust that George is as good as his words, and I am content to abide. The Sistine Chapel took a hell of a lot longer to paint.

When I first saw the “exciting announcement or two” I immediately thought — DWD!! However, I think it is much more likely that they will announce that HBO has ordered a Season 2 of GOT. GRRM has been keeping us pretty up-to-date on his Not a Blog as to chapters completed and those he has left to go. There is a post from Dec 16th, stating that the work is slow but ongoing on DWD.

HOWEVER, I do, very strongly, believe that the HBO series will be a contributing factor to when ADWD gets done. It is in the best interest of HBO and the series, if GRRM publishes ADWD in 2011, alongside the release of the first season. Whether or not he finishes the books will have a big impact on the series long term and short term. HBO has to have had a conversation with Martin about all this before they decided to green light GOT. There has to be an understanding there that these books need to get finished and releasing DWD in 2011 would dramatically increase sales on all fronts. MONEY MATTERS, in this case, I’m OK with that :-)

Got a little teary-eyed last night, reading everyone’s hopeful posts that DWD will be published soon. Seems unreal, but I think we are close!

UGH, fuck him. Honestly, I hate him. I was fine with the guy up until six months ago, but his blatant assholism to his fans has put me over the edge.

He KNOWS that people are chomping at the bit for ADwD, he KNOWS that’s why people visit his blog, he KNOWS that people are going to think that the announcement is ADwd, and worst of all, he KNOWS that the announcement is NOT ADwD (since he already promised to make the announcement on his blog).

I hate him. I HATE him. He knows how he’s making his fans feel and he’s doing it regardless of their feelings.

Claiming that you know that GRRM’s possible announcement isn’t about completing ADwD is odd, since it very well might be that. We’ve already heard from his publisher that they hope for him to finish by around the end of the year, and George could’ve explicitly stated that the announcement wasn’t ADwD related, and he also hasn’t added in the comments anything about it not being ADwD (something he’s been quick to do at times in the past), even though people have commented about their hope he is referring to ADwD. Also, it’s “champing” at the bit, not chomping.

    JackSparrow,

Considering that he’s said numerous times over the past several years that the announcement would be on his blog first and foremost, either he’s a liar, or the Jan. 9th announcements can’t be ADwD

I too believe it is not ADWD related (I hope it will be), but my feeling is his announcement concerns the HBO series and perhaps he would announce that “Fevre Dream” is coming to a screen near you or family room. I could see this happening with the TB, Twilight and Diaries craze and all the hoopla over Games, someone turning his Vampire novel into a movie or TV mini-series.

GRRM can set it so that the new is published on his website at the same time. That’s what he did the last time around, according to Wertzone.

You can actually announce something more than once; not everybody reads his blog. My guess is the same as Adam Whitehead’s, that the second item GRRM teased at possibly announcing is ADwD, if he finishes it in time. I think George would’ve stated, in either his post or in the comments, that his announcements weren’t ADwD-related if that was the case. I think it might’ve been better for him to just steer clear of any hints of any type of announcements up until ADwD is completed; the naysayers will claim he’s a liar either way if he doesn’t announce ADwD is finished by Jan 9th, whether that’s what his hint was about or not.

    JackSparrow,

Regardless of whether or not that’s the case, it was just another example of how he treats his fans like garbage. I don’t hate him for an isolated incident, I think he’s overall a very inconsiderate, self-important author. I used to LOVE GRRM, but over the course of the past two years, his blog and his blog alone have made me despise him. Things like sticking his nose up when discussing JK Rowling, things like flat out insulting and demeaning his fans who disagree with his analysis of football. He’s a huge jerk.

I’m not saying that anyone else has to agree with me in this, and I’m not saying that I won’t buy ADwD soon after it comes out (although I will probably buy it used, because I’d rather give an independent bookstore my money as opposed to him). I love his work, but I do absolutely abhor him as a person, as is my right, just as it’s your right to like him.

    Ash,

I don’t know why you’re telling me your rights, but yeah, I’m sure you can dislike anybody you care to. I’m always a little puzzled at the people who think George is a jerk, since he seems like a pretty nice guy. Certainly I understand that not everybody treats celebrities or authors the same way, or expects the same things from them. I wouldn’t say I love the guy, but I do like him, but I generally do not want or expect anything from celebrities, and do not love or hate them. I am not surprised that you used to love him and now hate him, since I see that a lot from fans of various people. But it’s certainly GRRM’s choice to interact with fans, and being hated by some of them is an unavoidable byproduct of that.

I don’t really care where he said he may announce it, just as long as it’s announced.

I don’t know much about GRRM as a person, but from what I’ve read he seems fine. All I know about him is that he writes my favorite series and I can’t wait to read it.

Ash – you’re starting to sound like Annie Wilkes from Misery! :P
