The interview videos continue to trickle onto the internet. We have another one from MTV, this time with Sean Bean, and one from French site Fantasy.fr, who interviewed Natalia Tena. Bean talks about playing a “good man for a change” and why he decided to take the role.
Tena, who plays Osha, sat down with Fantasy.fr back in December and talks about Harry Potter, of course, but also quite a bit about Thrones. The Thrones stuff starts at the 5:47 mark. Oh yeah, she also wears a goose stork hat. Video after the break.

Tena is amazing in this interview, she seems very excited about the part.
Also I now want a goose hat

That hat is sweet. Having the interview in what looks and SOUNDS like a public bathroom is not as sweet.

BTW, when Tena is trying to speak French at the beginning, what she says is “Hi, I’m Natalia. I like… wine, cheese… men… and music.”
mummerQuote Reply
I agree they could have chosen a better venue for a chat but I think the questions about GoT were better then some we have heard, and no comparisons with LotR…
I have to say though, I would struggle to take anyone seriously wearing a stupid hat like that.

Also, there’s no way that hat is a goose. The beak and the legs are too long. A heron maybe?

I love how Sean Bean speaks about Ned. You really hear the excitement in his voice over this role (more than any of the other interviews I’ve seen). Even if he wasn’t as excited about the role he would still be brilliant, don’t get me wrong, but it’s awesome seeing an actor I respect so much loving a character as much as I do.
SnakebiteyQuote Reply
It’s pretty funny when Natalia describes Osha since it could very easily be misinterpreted as her describing herself. :)
Love the stork hat too. She’s quite a unique character.

I have a confession to make. I’ve really thought Sean Bean’s sounded very unexcited (almost completely apathetic in fact) about his part in Game of Thrones so far. I feel he’s just spat out words we typically would want to hear concerning an epic fantasy series (but falling flat on his ass, since Game of Thrones is so different than other series).
But he does a good job here. Especially the very last thing he says about Ned’s character and what he tries to do – it sounded authentic. It gave of a real understanding of the role in my opinion. I’m relieved :)
I’m not sure I’m strong enough to watch through the entire Tena interview. I failed miserably last time, way too embarrassing for me to watch overly animated and excited people (probably linked with my low self esteem somehow, I get easily embarrassed). I’ll give it my best shot though :P

Ok… I failed! haha :) One minute in. That was way too much for me. I was biting my teeth together so hard I felt I was in danger of cracking them! Wow, what a….. unique person.

I have to second this. Nothing against Natalia or other lively people, but she is just too much for me. She would probably be nice person to hang out with a group of friends but listening her explain something feels too much like listening hyperactive little child talk. Exhausts me really quickly. But I’m a grumpy homedweller that likes his own peace so don’t mind me.
So from that I can say that… she is perfect for Osha :D
rorschach-Quote Reply
I can see her playing Osha (visually), but she seems high as a kite in these interviews. However I did bust out laughing when she describes Game of Thrones: F-ing amazing! And then she describes Osha: “There’s this little boy who I try to kill….” ROFL. The translator is like, “what?”
Sean Bean rocks, as usual. Very classy man who is clearly excited about this show and has great respect for the series and HBO

Gosh, that interview with Tena and Bean are awesome. I know Bean can be a cranky dude, but in all of his interviews he’s quite enthusiastic, and Tena seems indeed the high as a kite kind of girl, but I like it very much.
Other things on my mind: just read on Twitter that our beloved Eagles fan (justice has served Philly!) has never seen the Wire, Rome or Firefly on tv! My god WiC, you have some cathcing up to do! Can you please tell me that you have watched Breaking Bad on AMC? It’s by far the best show I have seen in recent years and has the same ‘why can’t anything go right and everyone be happy and alive’ kind of vibe aSoIaF has. Somehow stories that depress me make me love them all the more. These shows with Dead Like Me (another dark/comedy show), the Sopranos (same here, less comedy) and Seinfeld (why can’t anyone make a comedy without all the drama and romantic bullshit anymore? (Community is giving it a shot)) belong in the TV Hall of Fame.

I love how Bean explains his character. I don’t know, but I think he’s a very introverted person and he’s trying to to explain his character to a younger generation and he gets tongue tied and maybe a bit too self-aware. Like, he’s an extremely talented actor and I have no doubt that he loves this character; why else would he sign on to play Ned if he didnt? I think he has just been looking for a way to express it without acting like a giddy school girl.
Tena….I love her. Hat and all. But ya, she’s gotta be pretty coked up there.

Loved Rome, haven’t tried Deadwood yet (a western? for a left-wing city-girl? with stuff to do?) Anyhow, I watched the first episode of The Wire a couple months ago, and it was kind of disappointing. Lots of swearing and cynicism and under-breath muttering, which is not easy to follow, and I found nothing there to tell me this show is worth watching for a whole season (let alone 5 seasons). I really want to see Aiden Gillen, but as he doesn’t appear until season 3, so I may need some encouragement here.
Also, The Wire has been spoiled for me (re: the homeless murder/conspiracy), so really, is it worth watching still?
Carnivale is still a maybe. I get the feeling it was yanked prematurely, so may not be ‘complete’, kinda like Rome.

I’m a left-wing total city guy. Deadwood is brilliant. Milch and his actors manage to nearly turn cursing into Shakespeare! There’s so much to say about that show. It’s one of my favorites of all time. As long as you like compelling TV and don’t mind high levels of swearing, it’s something worth checking out. A totally different beast from the sanitized westerns of John Wayne.

I’m 7 episodes in to The Wire and find it fantastic-and I’m a liberal city boy. I also found the first few episodes underwhelming, but things begin to pick up /add up after eps. 4 or 5. I find the complications of both being an inner city youth as well as a cop are both explored. It’s more about the subject then it is one main character. Its been a great watch. The advice I got was to give it 4-5 eps. and if you still didn’t like it then it just want your cup of tea. I agree with that.

Yes, the Wire is still worth it knowing that spoiler, I don’t find it a big spoiler actually. It’s just the storyline of the last season, it’s not a last-episode kind of reveal. I did watch it with English subtitles, because the accents are indeed quite hard to follow. But please give it a chance, it’s absolutely worth it.
For me the most annoying spoilers is when people tell me which characters are going to die. I’m going to tell you a terrible story about my dad spoiling aSoS for me. I started reading it and he asked if I already read the part were ROB DIES. I said: “What the fuck dad! I’m only 3 chapters in!” “Yeah but it happens in the first chapter I thought, did Catelyn die in the first chapters then?” “WHAT THE FUCK YOU MORON, WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK!!!!” You can imagine I was furious at him for several weeks…
KnurkQuote Reply
And I still want to watch Deadwood, but somehow they refuse to put them out on blu-ray in Europe. Just like Breaking Bad, only released on region A blu-rays. It’s like they want me to download these shows…
KnurkQuote Reply
Knurk,
Wow, that sucks. Your dad screwed you over. Sounds like he got part one and part two mixed up.
That is why I always ask “what part are you on?” instead of “did you get to X part?” Even if I’m like 99% sure they would have made it to X part, I never like to assume, because you never know.
Winter Is ComingQuote Reply
Knurk,
The Sixth Sense film was spoiled for me in much the same way – I hope you beat your dad with a tome, or at least scooped up HIS latest read and summarized the ending on the bathroom mirror for him XD
I spoiled myself on some of the ASOIAF deaths because I couldn’t stay the hell away from the forums whilst I was reading. Damn me. And of course, what was gonna happen to the K in the N was pretty evident from Dany’s unusually specificH of the U dream. Sad shit.
Based on the great feedback here, I will give The Wire a few more chances. I like swears and complexity and subtlety that hits like a pinprick in the night. But Deadwood might have to come first – I loved the epic awesomeness that was Firefly, so how DARE I turn my nose up at a Western? I will cure my genre-snottiness, I do so solemnly swear. (Glad to hear it’s not like the ‘traditional’ westerns, which I find to be a dusty snooze-fest).
Thank you everyone!
reedgirlQuote Reply
This is a great example of the poetry of Deadwood. I always felt that the writers intentionally doused the dialogue with filth as a big F U to anyone who thinks that cursing is just gratuitous nonsense and therefore can not be good. I judge anything I read or watch by dialogue first and foremost and Deadwood slays almost almost every other thing can think of. The Wire is fantaculicious as well, though not entirely for the same reasons.

Knurk,
As far as spoilers go — I was half way through the third book, well before the red wedding when a friend said, “I can’t believe that Catlyn becomes a zombie” Wait, what?! Boom! Double Spoiler. Spoil spoil spoil.
reedgirl,
I initially dismissed the Wire as just another police procedural — albeit a well-crafted one. Season one and two are really good police dramas — and they excel at showing the issues from multiple sides. Then something happens in Season Three and Four: the show is completely compelling, it has great storytelling, but it also becomes …important. It straddles the line between a great story with wonderful characters and a documentary about a failing system. Oh, and the spoiler you heard is irrelevant, it’s actually an annoying side story in the final season. People talk about the Wire as “the best show ever” because it carries with it a social relevance that is rare in television. I wouldn’t be surprised if that turned a lot of people away.

You know what’s the worst part? My dad is the kind of guy who WANTS to know spoilers, I often catch him starting with last chapters from books so he actually couldn’t understand why I was so upset with all those horrible spoilers. When I finished AFFC (before him this time) he wanted to know what kind of things were going to happen in the book, *sigh*. Everytime I watch a film with him that I’ve already seen he asks: is he going to make it? How does it end? So I really can’t get back to him.
Mr. Frey,

Yes, as Stephen Berry said, give The Wire 4-5 episodes and then give up (if you still want to). Although I loved it from the first episode it was at that point that I realized it might become the best I’d ever seen. I watched it with subtitles though…
Johan SporreQuote Reply
Johan, I thought I was the only person who uses captions/subtitles “unnecessarily”! Yes I hear and understand English just fine, but I just HATE missing a word of the dialogue. What always happens is the sound is VERY loud for the action/music of a show, so you turn it down, but then it is very soft for dialogue, so you turn it up, and then down, and then up… not to mention the SCREAMING commercials.
It drives me INSANE.
Yes. I am a caption/subtitle addict. But with shows that are well-written, I don’t want to miss the subtleties. Imagine when GoT comes out? DVR, subtitles, captions, frame-by-frame analysis… it’s gonna be a busy time!
reedgirlQuote Reply
reedgirl,
Worth noting is that I’m not a native English speaker, so without subtitles I’d been lost when they used drug-talk especially, so they were unnecessary for me :) But yes, almost every time I have a sub available I’ll use it. It makes me more relaxed in my watching so that I can appreciate the rest of the show better.
