New shirts available to purchase, including house designs!
By Winter Is Coming on in Merchandise.

Wow, today must officially be Game of Thrones day. A new trailer to discuss, The Maester’s Path website opens up, an interview with Ran of Westeros at Making Game of Thrones and his continued report about his set visit and now HBO has added some new shirts to the Game of Thrones section of the HBO Shop… including oft-requested house heraldry designs! Now you can declare your allegiance to one of the great houses of Westeros.

House Targaryen shirtHouse Lannister shirt

Winter Is Coming: Wow, an exciting news filled day. And these shirts are just the cherry on top. Some awesome designs. I’m liking the simple and clean look of the official logo shirts. And as far as house designs go, the Arryn and the Targaryen ones are my two favorites. Any one going to be ordering some of these?

UPDATE: Unfortunately the house design shirts are only available in the US right now. Here is the link to the UK HBO Store, they should be available there soon.

    Targs and Greyjoys!

Starks are pretty narsty (they are so bad the ‘r’ is supposed to be there) That logo does not look good on a plain shirt of that colour.

i want these, almost all of them. it’s a shame that the Starks is the weakest of the bunch (i think the colors are a bvt off), The Targaryans and Greyjoy’s (i want a t-shirt that say WE DO NO SOW) are amazing.

Does anybody else think the house mottoes are one of the sillier aspects of the books? It had a Harry Potter/team-sport vibe to it. I cringe every time I read “Hear me Roar.”

I think the shirts would be better as simple banners. I’d get some green Fossaway apples. Or something with my namesake (anybody else hoping that Danwell becomes a major character?)

Note the Targ Dragon only has two legs, a Targ banner seen in one of the trailers had a 4 legged Dragon but it looks like they have changed it to the more book accurate 2 legs.

The latest trademark applied for by HBO included textile wall hangings; fabric banners; so you never know.

They finally scrapped the horrid descriptions of the books. If I recall one of them included the phrase “…while Martin is no Terry Brooks…” or some such unflattering comparison insinuating that one of those crap cliché fantasy writers was better than GRRM. And then there was another one for aCoK that described Arya as a princess and had all sorts of things that made you wonder if whoever wrote these read the books.

Now these new descriptions would have me snapping the books right up if I weren’t already a fan :)

And I’m glad they’re doing something more original with tees than walking billboards. I always preferred the ones that were inside jokes, no one else but other fans would get. Maybe next they’ll roll out shirts with “Stick ‘em with the pointy end!” or one with Tyrion’s many quips.

ok, not to be negative… well, ok, to be negative… but why did they ruin the Targaryan shirt by putting a big rectangle smack in them iddle of the sigil (and to make it even worse, containing text in a modern font). It would be cool to own a Targaryan t-shirt, but no way I’d pay for such a bone-headed aesthetic decision.

    Mr. Frey,

Family mottoes are historical — actual historical noble families had actual historical family mottoes that went on their coat of arms. The mottoes Martin chooses for his fictional houses are no more or less silly than real ones.

And the “team sport” vibe is completely appropriate — it was very important for noble houses to create a feeling of “team spirit” among not only family members, but among their servants and soldiers as well. All the symbols of the house, including the motto, were part of building the house identity, and the motto was one more thing for a lowly man-at-arms to take pride in.

The Greyjoy shirt, goodness! I hate the bastards, but that pattern is fantastic. And I think there’s no avoiding it: with the Targaryen dragon with the correct number of legs, I’m buying that t-shirt as soon as they go international. The Baratheon one is looking mighty tempting, too. Sadly, I agree with one of the commenters above: the Stark is the weakest of the bunch, though I understand the need for those colors.

True Blood’s got hats, shot glasses, mugs, pint glasses, neon signs, necklaces, busts (little statues — get your minds out of the gutter), posters, key chains, DVDs, soundtracks, calendars — they actually sell the Tru Blood beverage.

Yeah, my fav house is Stark. But Stark tshirt has the weakest design. From a designers standpoint. What happened? From a distance the “is” in Winter is coming” is lost. And looks like “Winter Coming”. Should have just stuck with a very light grey and a darker grey direwolf. The whole light tan, dunnoh HBO. These tshirts seemed rushed in layout.

Love the new Targ Dragon. But you put “Fire and blood in the middle of the dragon. OOOOOOkkkkk? Should have followed the same design aesthetic as the Arryn and had the text curve around the Dragon.

The Tully shirt should have had the waves in blue. To at least get blue in there. Or a blue shirt with red waves and the white fish.

Love the rest. But the the Targ and Stark one have the weakest design and layout issues.

Will get the Baratheon and the Lannister. Waivering on Targ. And I may just need to hold off on Stark till maybe HBO changes that shirts color and text sizing.

I was hoping for variations like that too with “Game of Thrones” or house mottos on back.

Wow I love these. I’m going to have to get the Targaryen and Greyjoy T-shirt. I love the Targaryen’s and love their words. One thing though, I don’t see the word ‘and’ on the shirt. All I see is ‘Fire Blood’, am I the only one? I don’t really like the Greyjoys but they did a great job with the Kraken and I like the Greyjoy words.

I’ll probably wait until some more stuff comes out on the store before placing my order though, I want to get some Mugs and Banners that they’ll probably come out with.

Oh and a note to those crying that they can’t get these items because they live outside the U.S. , look at the FAQ’s on the website. The first answer is they ship internationally, just that It’ll take longer and cost more for shipping.

I was really, really hoping they wouldn’t include the House Mottos (and suggested that to the HBO twitter when they asked).

    Jonathan Ross,

I’m hoping they choose to offer shirts without the mottos as well, as I’d prefer those. Having the words makes it ‘geekier’ whereas I think everyday non-book-reading folks wouldn’t give anyone sporting those sigils a second thought but it’d be a way for people in on it to spot each other and maybe an ice breaker.

    Jonathan Ross,

Agreed, 100%. The only words I’d really be okay with are the Stark words (Winter is Coming), but I’ve always shied away from things like this because it just seems too… geeky, I guess. But I LOVE the house symbols so far, and would absolutely drop the cash to buy 2 or 3 (or 4) shirts if they offered versions with the words (or even with the words on the back).

Can someone suggest this to HBO?!?

I’m thinking if words are necessary (HBO probably wants the shirts to serve as billboards for the series) then my choice would be pretty simple: sigil on front, the show’s logo on back. Ideally I’d go without any words but that’s asking a lot.

    Mr. Frey,

As for the cheesy lines, I actually like the “A Lannister always pays his depts” unnofficial one, and of coarse the Stark’s “Winter is coming”, but other than that yes most of them are on the cheesy side. Then again, that’s what tends to happen whenever you try to come up with a motto for X-pride, be the X school, house, team, company, or organization

My wote is for international shipping, but alas…

  66. Greylander
    Posted March 1, 2011 at 2:58 am | Permalink

To sum up the problem with the Stark sigil… Baratheon gets a stag that looks like a stag, Lannister gets a lion that looks like a lion, Targaryan gets a 3 headed dragon that looks like a 3 headed dragon, Arryn gets a falcon that looks like a falcon, Tyrell gets a flower that looks like a flower, Tully gets a fish that looks like a fish…

…and Stark gets a wolf that looks like a… pine cone.

or maybe a pineapple. …Or looks more like scales than fur so maybe some kind of dragon?

I realize this is probably an authentic historic style for drawing wolves in heraldry, but being historic or authentic does not save it from being a lame depiction of a wolf. Who is going to look at that and think “wolf” without being told (or already knowing) what it is?

It almost seems intentional — maybe as if the Starks symbol is from the time of the First Men, eschewing the more realistic/detailed/flamboyant symbols of the other houses, which perhaps reflect the Targaryen era.

It’ll be Targ and Lannister for me when the UK shop opens… Mind you, I think my allegiance will be Lannister when I see Jaime on screen – damn it, seeing everyone in the flesh is already having an effect on how I view the characters and the show hasn’t even started yet.

The Tullys ARE the Hufflepuffs of Westeros, and that’s why I love them so! :D

I’ll be stalking the UK store to get a Tully women’s T, hoping they ship in Italy. But as said by many, these emblems are bizarre. When I saw the title of the post I hoped they would be like in the parchment that WiC and others received in the maester’s press kit. Instead they are different… again. Luckily I like red, but I’d love for the Tully tee to have some blue in it (hmmm… embroidering…). and how many different Baratheons designs have seen until now?

I admit I have not followed closely the technical aspects of the production, but it seems they have a bunch of artists working independently. Or they have different designs to sell more stuff. /CynicalFish

Anyway, I do hope they allow purchases for other countries, otherwise they are really shooting themselves in the foot with regard to profit and publicity.

Man, these look pretty awesome and I would love to buy one… but I rushed ahead and bought the first “Winter is Coming” shirt from HBO and, frankly, was very disappointed in the quality of the actual shirt. It was very, very thin and the transfer looked and felt kinda cheap. Was expecting a lot more from a $25 shirt.

    ok and I am german… but…

Julian Budke: Yeah, same here… I bought one a when I was in NY in December and I was really shocked because of the low quality… I am actually afraid to wear it.

I wanted a Stark one, but the color is just stupid. If they did a grey one, i would buy it without hesitation. I don’t mind the logo that much. It should be a wolf running (as that would make more sense, look better, and be true to the books), but from the clips I’ve seen from the show, that’s the emblem they’re using on camera.

HBO, please release a grey Stark shirt. I’ll buy it.

That being said I’m not happy with the Stark shirt either. So be it, I’ll buy a Targ shirt.

The Arryn shirt is definitely an aesthetically pleasing shirt, one of the best. But “High as Honor” just seems to invite the wrong kind of speculation. Especially for those of us who do not live in eyries.

After more hemming and hawing, I think I may be turning mroe and more towards Tully. After all, living in the upper midwest, it’s practically Tully land out here. Lots of rivers and rolling hills.

I think the Arryn shirt is completely awesome, as is the Greyjoy shirt, but I don’t particularly care for either house, so I’m not sure what I’ll buy. About the quality of the shirts… I was looking at the True Blood shirts a couple of days back and decided to read the reviews since I couldn’t find a size chart. The oldest reviews are mostly bad, complaining about thin material and the sizes being off, however, the more recent reviews mention that the shirts hold up really well, the material is thicker, and the sizes are right on. Putting that together with the couple of comments (sorry, I’m at work and don’t remember who said what) that mentioned that the first GoT shirts are really thin, I would like to assume that HBO kinda rushes the first few shirts, then ups the quality after awhile with the end product being pretty good. *shrugs* I could be completely wrong, though.

As soon as I saw the shirts, I immediately bought 2 Stark ones, for myself and my sister. Now I’m reading all these comments about how bad they suck! LOL I actually do agree it would look better if it was a full-body direwolf like the other animals. I kinda like the neutral off white color, but maybe it would look better if was white with gray trim around the neck and sleeves, like a ringer.

Crowned stag is the best because of the crown, with the Lion a close second, especially like the tail. The direwolf should be the full animal, in comparison with the other designs this one def kinda looks silly. Although I do like the colors of the Stark shirt. Gonna hold off and see what else HBO comes up with for designs.

I want the Targ shirt so bad!! I’m a sucker for black and red color schemes, and for dragons. I like the Lannister shirt, but it feels too much like a Gryffindor shirt, not to mention that everybody I know would mistake it as such, and we can’t have people mistaking Game of Thrones for Harry Potter!

  115. Lex
    Posted March 1, 2011 at 8:56 pm | Permalink

    Carrie Best,

I don’t think they actually suck, I think people just really want the full direwolf and so were disappointed. Also, considering the Starks are probably the “main” family of the series, you’d expect their shirt to be the best by far.

It seems that the show will be using both a wolf’s head, AND the full body direwolf (visible at the tourney, although it’s standing on a green stripe which is weird). The show also seems to have two versions of the Baratheon stag, one just a head, the other a full body.

Lovely Baelish shirt! The motto is brilliant :D I’d buy it!

    Mirax:
Although I’d definitely be willing to buy a Night’s Watch shirt.Black material with black letters, awesome! : D

Haha, but really, a black Night Watch shirt with, dunno, silver lettering would be awesome. And on the back, the oath, one of the finest pieces of poetry I’ve ever read. Or maybe just “Now my watch begins…”

On the same lines, a Kingsguard shirt would be cool. White, with a silver design that recalls the arabesques on Jaime’s armour. And on the back two options, “Tower of Joy” or “Kingslayer” :D Or some pithy saying from Barristan.

I’ve noticed another annoying thing with the HBO shirts. Either it’s laziness with the pics, or there are 2 kinds of women’s sleeves. Compare the Stark sleeves (pretty) with the Tully sleeves (lame).

So, another request for those who get the shirts. Beside quality, how about the sleeves for women’s shirts? And are the sizes abundant or scanty? (Example entirely unrelated to reality: if a tall, wide-shouldered, “well-fed” girl gets a medium, will it explode?)

I’ll subscribe to the HBO forum as soon as I can get over all that Flash.

I agree heartily, the oath on the back would be perfect. Somehow I doubt that HBO would want to leave the front blank, although I really do think that would be best.

As for my black shirt with black letters comment, it was only mostly in jest. I had a friend who made a shirt with some sort of lettering that was not-quite-opaque black and shiny. I have no idea what material the letters were made from, though.

I registered on the HBO forums just to add my voice, regarding the design issues. I may still end up buying a Baratheon shirt (love the colour and the design), but I doubt I’ll buy anymore because of the design issues. If they fix these issues I will INSTANTLY buy a Stark, Targaryen, and Greyjoy shirt as well (maybe even multiples).

There is SO much potential for Game of Thrones merchandise, it’s sad to see such shoddy design issues. It’s like they still don’t quite realize how much we care about the little details.
