A Dance with Dragons to release July 12th!

A Dance with DragonsThe long wait is (almost) over, ASoIaF fans! James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly has broken the news (and GRRM confirms it) that A Dance with Dragons will publish on July 12th, 2011 in the US. George R. R. Martin is not finished the book yet, but is close enough that the publisher has decided to announce the date. Hibberd has a couple quotes from Martin as well and promises more in an interview to be published in the print-version of this weeks EW.

A Dance With Dragons will be published on July 12. The manuscript is huge — the publisher estimates the hardcover edition will run more than 900 pages, putting it about the same length as the longest book in the series, A Storm of Swords. Schedule your summer vacation accordingly.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What took so long?
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I’m not sure I have a good answer. If I did, I would have taken less time. It’s enormous. It’s as long as A Storm of Swords. It’s very complicated. I have a lot of characters and points of view. And I’ve been doing a ton of rewriting, trying to get it where I wanted it to be. Some of these chapters I’ve rewritten more times than I can count before I’m satisfied with them.

Can you tease something from the book?
I don’t want to spoil any surprises. I can say all the characters people have been waiting for are there: Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Tyrion. There’s also new characters, and viewpoints from characters who did not have viewpoints before.

For more of Martin’s interview — where he compares Dragons to the previous four books, and weighs in on the HBO adaptation — pick up this week’s print edition of Entertainment Weekly.

Winter Is Coming: HYPE! Is this really happening? I never thought this day would come. April 17th, July 12th. I don’t know which one I’m looking forward to more now.

UPDATE: Voyager, GRRM’s UK Publisher, has confirmed that A Dance with Dragons will publish on July 12 in the UK as well!

  • I’m not buying that until I see martin tell us on the Not a Blog. While I trust WIC, really my heart can’t take getting excited and then being let down.

  • seanathin,

Dude, Entertainment Weekly is the source of the quote and date, not WiC. GRRM himself was interviewed. Follow the link in the initial post if you’re unclear.

  • Despite having a crucial exam in an hour I couldn’t be any happier right now.

And as much as I am looking forward to the TV show, July 12th is the more important date for me!

    Thank You, George!

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OH MY OLD GODS!!!! This is wonderful! Oh, I can’t wait ’till it’s translated in Serbian!

  • Added GRRM’s confirmation to the original post. THIS IS NOT A DRILL PEOPLE! THIS IS THE REAL THING!

    4/17, 7/12

  • Patrick L Ellis,

Oddly enough, today is my birthday! So birthday presents all around. Now, if they can just give my namesake Frey a POV chapter, then all will be cool.

  • I’m looking forward to April but good books beat the crap out of television every day if you ask me. I have my eyes on July more. This is big news indeed.

  • From Martin’s website:

For what it’s worth, the book’s a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS.

I wonder in which sense he compares it to ASoS. We already know it’s a long as ASoS, do you think he could also be hinting at a similar level of character slaughter/action/throwing your book to the wall to that of his 3rd installment?

    PUMPED!

  • YYYYYeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was apparent for some time now that he would finish the manuscript soon, but after such a long wait one tends to try to keep ones hopes down… 900 pages of utter joy!!!! Woohoooo!!!!! Wait, 900 pages? That’ll take me what…2 days to finish it? And then a long (hopefully shorter) wait for the next one again? No, I couldn’t be happier right now, but I won’t start reading Dance before the entire series is finished. It’s gonna be a terribly long, difficult, even painfull wait, but it is the only way I will REALLY be able to enjoy reading aDwD…

Anyway, congrats George, and know this: despite the moaning about the inexplicably long wait, we will forever protect your back and always support your bottom!

  • Uh-oh, there’s a loophole. GRRM says “barring tsunamis, general strikes…”

Well, given what’s going on in WI, OH, IN, etc., I don’t think a general strike is all that unlikely. :-|

  • Right around the time the first season of the show ends. Just as I predicted. Excellent news.

  • I would bet dollars to doughnuts that the book has been in the can, so to speak, for a couple of months. A July release is perfect to capitalize on the hype generated by the series. Then again, I’m just cynical like that.

Regardless, I’m very excited about this. FANTASTIC NEWS!

  • *does happy dance*

And thus does GRRM hold true to House Gatewatch’s words – truly today the bottom has been supported.

*checks her Nook for pre-order options*

  • I’ll believe it when I am actually holding a copy in my hand on July 12th XD
Please… please…please let this be true and not go the way of the Spider-man musical.

  • I have tears of joy …FINALLY ITS DONE…WOOOOOOHOOOO….looking forward to this waaaaay more than the show….

  • Does anyone know who is reading the audiobook, and if work on the recording has already started?

  • Yesssssssss!!!!!!!

Six (6) years is a long wait by any measure, but good things obviously comes to those who wait (and wait, and wait and wait)! ;)

    F##K YES!!!!!

    Thank you George, THANK YOU!

  • I thought the covers were set? Now he has like 5 different ones on his page! I can’t confirm it because his site is now down haha. I really like this cover though, I think the usual american ones are ugly, like the green one they had planned for ADWD.

  • This is going to be the best birthday present EVER!!! This year is just waaaay too exciting for me!!! April 17th and now this!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!! =D

  • And what about the translation in french. I realy can’t imagine reading it in english, with all the name changes

  • Happiest day of the year this far! :D But it’s bad, cause it will take at least half a year to translate it into my own language… I have to wait a lot mooooooar!

Bytheway, what the hell is the meaning of this: “Always support the bottom” sentence ?
Maybe my English isn’t as good as I hoped…

  • Awesome! That is the best birthday present I’ve gotten so far today and that includes getting an Angel boxset and having bought myself “Wise Man’s Fear”.

Truly a good birthday this year!

  • Alexander Dubrovsky,

exactly the right time. Just after season one, when all the new fans will be busy reading the books. This way the publisher will sell more hardcovers -> more money. That’s business (and i don’t even care anymore now that we have a date ;)), at least that gives me some hope that he i deep into the next one already.

  • OH MY FUCKING GOD.

I hope Amazon can ship faster than light to France! I’m so excited ! Imagine… but July 18th or 19th, we will finally have to start bitching about WINDS OF WINTER’s release date ! :D

  • Flóra Ballabás: Bytheway, what the hell is the meaning of this: “Always support the bottom” sentence ?
Maybe my English isn’t as good as I hoped…

There is always support of the bottom…. Probably because of this! ;)

You should read the english books. They are way better. My gf has the german translation but it sucks…

  • Let the dancing in the street commence!

Timing between the show and the release may actually be good. I’m sure the show will garner many more fans many of whom will read the books.

  • It’s a bit disappointing that the first time he updates his update page in 4 years, It’s not to say “it’s done” like he said the update would say. It kinda feels like “I got the job!!!!!….well it’s not official yet.”

  • That’s pretty amazing. Fortunately, I am one of the lucky ones.

    Why, pray tell?

Because I only just finished AFFC last night!

Yup. I read the other three books years ago but never bothered to read Feast. So as the HBO hype ramped up, I decided to do read them all again and end with Feast.

So instead of waiting five years, or however long it’s been, I only have to wait a few months!

But I feel the pain of the fans who have waited all this time. At least I don’t have to go back and re-read in anticipation of ADWD!

  • Cool, and i’m really, really looking foward to it, but i expected it to be released this summer anyway. So – only a small grin and a nod from me.

Ps: Would be quite funny/superannoying if he announced another delay after all. I mean – he still isn’t totally done.

  • It so crazy and still unreal that I missed the great post about Belfast Moot and TitanCon.
ADWD publication date? Nope, you are kidding me! lol

  • Winter’s wife, two copies for sure. Once one of us is finished, we can give one to your mom.

Knurk, the cover is set. I think Martin was just showing off all the different iterations of covers the book has gone through. The one over at EW and here is the final design though.

Sjwenings, true, but he has like one chapter left. I think even GRRM can manage to finish that by April (assuming the 3 month press time).

  • YESSSS! YAYYYY GEORGE, YOU DID IT!!! :D :D

It feels unreal. And I only started reading the books last year, so I can’t imagine what it must feel like for the people who have read them all “on time” and have been waiting for this FOR FOREVER!

Ohhhhh my God, this is awesome. I was planning a vacation to Europe for July, but my friends and I decided to move it to August. And now I am SO GLAD we did, because I will be able to scoop up DwD and read it the moment it hits the shelves!!

I was just looking at the calendar, and with an April 17 debut, and 10 episodes, the show should run through June 19. That gives us an approximate 3 weeks before the book release! Perfect timing! :)

  • Couldn’t be more excited. Glad I had just re-read the series again. But when does the whining for The Winds of Winter start?

  • This is superawesome and made my day, or probably week or month… Some long expected news, and it’s been clear for a while that the end was near, but a firm publication date cannot fail to cause a great deal of excitement that I may or may not need to temper with a fine drink :)

  • I just hope it isn’t as confusing as AFFC.

I know, I know. Don’t hate me. But some of the chapters I liked, and some I found totally confusing. Especially when you get to some of the chapters where a character is giving backstory on Westeros genealogy. Like that chapter with Jaime and his aunt. I forget her name.

There are a few other examples, too. It’s like, “Why am I reading about all these cousins and dukes and squires and Sers, when they have nothing to do with the story?”

It is amazing world-building, but is it really necessary?

I think GRRM must have a very lax editor who lets him put in whatever he wants.

I’ll probably be getting a visit from Ilyn Payne for saying all this.

  • Winter Is Coming: Knurk, the cover is set. I think Martin was just showing off all the different iterations of covers the book has gone through. The one over at EW and here is the final design though.

Strange that they deviate from the style of the previous 4 books, but this one is a huge improvement. Voyager seems to keep their original design, that is in style with their previous (re-)releases, it’s a shame though they didn’t keep the old style-covers when they first published the first three books, those were amazing.

  • With Game of Thrones being first aired on the 17th of April and A Dance With Dragons released on the 12th of June, I think it’s more a calculation than a coincidence. I guess Martin’s publishers have told him to delay the end of his writing for a few months last year…

    Anyway, GREAT NEWS !!!

  • Kell,

Don’t French bookstores sell English books? I remember AFFC (Voyager-edition) lying on the shelves in the Netherlands the day it was published in England.

  • Vohdre: Couldn’t be more excited. Glad I had just re-read the series again. But when does the whining for The Winds of Winter start?

The moment readers finish the Dance ,lol

  • Good things come to those who support the bottom!!!! I was so excited about the HBO series but this…….!!!!! WHOO HOOOOO!!!!!

  • Wow, that’s a fast schedule – I thought the publication phase would take longer.
    So happy right now :)

  • And so the multitudes rejoice in the streets (much to the amusement and confusion of ordinary folk)! :D

  • Aaaaaaaaaah and i’ve only been waiting for a little less than a year….So are we sure we’re not getting the green cover, because even though they are generally on the cheap side i would hate for ADWD to clash with the other four.

  • What is the likelihood of this being released on kindle the same day? I much prefer reading with the kindle, especially when it comes to the larger books and by the looks of it this one is a monster, as big as storm of swords!

  • Knurk, Bantam is reissuing all of the old books with these new UK-style covers. Like a sucker, I will probably buy them all with the new covers. Plus get the HBO tie-in edition of AGOT.

  • Premier of the tv series on April 17th, second season will probably be announced a few days later, and now a Dance with Dragons to be released on July 12th…..A Song of Ice and Fire overload….can’t handle so much awesomeness in one year!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • I damn near screamed out loud when I saw this on the website. I was just checking in for some updates on the tv series…then I see this…..fangasm hardcore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SSSSSSSSSSSSNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My reaction: WOOOOOHOOOOO YEAAAAHH (and a few non-citable words in Polish ;)) I had hoped George wouldn’t miss the great opportunity of publishing the ADWD in the same year as the HBO version hits the screens but…. this is just too good. And I have just started the whole series re-read. Can life get any better? :) Now excuse me, ladies and gentlemen but I have jizzed in my pants.

  • The only thing is I’m a little sorry for GRRM. I’m sure he had the inner desire to be able to give (at least) the big news to the world.

  • hmmm i don’t know why but the first thing i thought when i read this was: and when will he work to start on Winds of Winter?

I started reading the series after AFFC was released so does anybody know how long it will take for the book to be published in other languages ?

  • And I have forgotten to support my bottom when the news struck XD. Joining the Edit buttoners of Wyknett castle.

  • Amazing news! There’s not much to be said about this since everyone already knows how hard the wait has been. I’ll be content with quoting the Holy Grail:

    “And there was much rejoice.”

  • Yayy!

Now I’ve finished jumping around the lab, and scaring everyone, my hands are just about steady enough to type :) Finally! Can’t wait for July :)

ASOS was split into two books (at least my copy is two books), does anyone know if the same will happen with ADWD?

  • It’ll probably be split for the paperback release in 2012, but the hardcover will be one book.

  • I feel a bit relieved to be honest. For me and for George, which is silly since he is a big boy and can handle things fine. I look forward to turning pages.

  • Hollyoak,

I agree with you wrt aFfC

Primarily I think that it needed SERIOUS editing, and the events of aFfC should have taken half as many chapters to tell (and maybe 2/3 of the words). The editors probably just wanted something out ASAP to make money so they didn’t care how bad it was.

However, I am hopeful that this time GRRM is cutting things to the bone and aDwD will be much improved compared to aFfC. He seems to be writing and rewriting and agonizing over every word.

  • sorry for that….. but a big YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWPPPPPP…. effing yeah….. always support George’s bottom, our bottoms… anybody’s bottom!!!

  • Expected the announcement any day now, after the hints he dropped, so taking it calmly and in my stide, if we except the detail of breathing into a paper bag to keep from hyperventilating.

  • Winter Is Coming,

Do you know if those will be hardcover? (I know Werthead is also here, so if he has the answer that would be great!)

I just hate that they change coverstyle so often, and I am such a dork I want matching hardcovers for all 5 books. But it seems with this bantam re-issue that they go for the ADWD-UK-cover for their Game of Thrones re-issue. Yeah, let’s not make this complicated at all…

  • Yey! Its nice to know a date for when its coming. This next month is going to drag though.

  • Wow! Awesome news, it almost seems surreal! Let’s hope GRRM is able to finish within the next few weeks, so they can stick to that release date.

I guess I’d better start another re-read of AFFC very soon…

  • Julian Budke,

    Thanks!

Yeah, I thought about it, but the name changes might be a lot of problem, and then I would have to buy it again in my own language, because my brother and mother, and probably my whole circle of friends read my book, so… :)

And anyway, I’m not even sure, does Amazon sale to Europe to? Or where do you Europien fellows buy the English version?

  • Woot! made my whole damn year. Thank you George!, you and Parris have earned a well deserved vacation.

  • Flóra Ballabás,

Amazon really ships fast (and most of the times free!) to other European countries. The English books are always way cheaper on Amazon than in my country (for example, I bought the new Rothfuss for €12,50 on Play, in the Netherlands it goes for €26,99). But for this one I’m going to be in front of the bookstore the very morning it sells, and very willing to pay the ridiculous amount of €26,99 (assuming that will be the price)!

  • hulst:

its more a calculation, but i think its even bigger than what you propose.
if you ask me, he´s done with dragons for years and just held it back for marketing reasons.
how long do you thing he knew HBO was going to take GOT to TV? The first release date was given for 2007?

this is good news indeed, but im still not buying his excuses. only marketing

  • userj,

Given how long GRRM has taken to finish Dance, to the dismay of his publisher, do you really find it likely that GRRM would suddenly take a break from his perfectionism for Feast and release something he didn’t think was really good just to get something out on time? If so, by what logic wouldn’t he have done that with Dance then since he’s been pressed far harder for this book? I don’t see any coherent logic there and I also find it very questionable that the people he trusts with editing would only be out for money and don’t care about quality.

  • You should read the english books. They are way better. My gf has the german translation but it sucks…

agreed. i also read all of them in english. and you can already preorder the english version on the german amazon page.

intersting: theres already an excerpt from the book at amazon.

  • Samantha Hirst,

    Knurk,

Thank you both guys! So Amazon.co.uk it will be. It is really cheaper than it will be in Hungary i think, so I will order it, and than read it again in hungarian just to make sure I understand everything in English! :D
I hope they can ship it soon here!

  • coltaine777: Vohdre: Couldn’t be more excited. Glad I had just re-read the series again. But when does the whining for The Winds of Winter start?

The moment readers finish the Dance ,lol

I´d take any bet: the moment the second season is aired by HBO (if they do).

  • Well. Isn’t this a nice surpri….WOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!

Yeah, I’m excited. Can barely even fake thinking rationally right now :)

  • “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”…*breath*…”OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”

  • Bene,

Have faith my friend…HBO have themselves a sweetheart deal in N.IRELAND…this show will get at least 3 seasons…this is the next BIG THING on tv…

  • Yes! Awesome as the show looks, all the show news in the world couldn’t make me as happy or excited as I am now. Summer can’t come soon enough.

  • Just so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is anybody gonna take George up on his advice and hack apart their copies of Feast and Dance, then splice the chapters back together in chronological order to create one giant Dancefeast with Dragoncrows!

  • Can’t wait, and the timing couldn’t be better. I’m just about through my third reading of a SoS so I should be able to get through Feast in time to start right into Dance with Dragons!

Also, I lol’d at the idea of “Dancefeast with Dragoncrows!”

  • I have just one question and I am deadly serious: CAN I ORDER VIA AMAZON YESTERDAY??

  • the goat:
    Just so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is anybody gonna take George up on his advice and hack apart their copies of Feast and Dance, then splice the chapters back together in chronological order to create one giant Dancefeast with Dragoncrows!

Hmmm, guess I really should have put a question mark rather than an exclamation point after that second part. I’m so excited even rudimentary grammar and typing skills have deserted me!!?&;.:

  • Hope it will be worth the wait… the biggest question for me tho is will the audiobook be available at the same time or soon after ? and who will do the reading ?

  • Oh and if the answer is “NO” then I need to know how much does an airplane ticket cost from Zagreb,Wien or Budapest to London with a low-cost airline?? And I don’t mind standing in case they have those standing places in airplanes they talked about a few months back…

  • Andrija Andrew P,

on the german amazon page you were able to preordet it for at least a year (i would think even much longer).
but they didnt have an excerpt there when i checked the last time and also didnt have the new label.

  • I hope Martin comes to NYC for book signings shortly after it comes out. I wonder how likely it is that he’d do a nationwide or even a worldwide signing tour.

  • Okay, this is super exciting… I will definitely be buying it first thing in the morning on July 12th…

But the real question now is… when the hell will The Winds of Winter come out? :)

  • YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JULY 12TH WILL BE THE BEST DAY EVER! The world will not see me for 2 or 3 days because all I will do for that period time is READ A DANCE WITH MOTHERF*CKING DRAGONS!!!

  • That’s the sound of cheers all around the world. I feel like there should be fireworks across the globe in celebration.

I’m digging the new cover, with the shield. Of course it kindof sucks that they changed styles half way through, but oh well. I thought the original illustrations were crummy. This is much classier, true to the books.

It’ll be our luck that WWIII is around the corner…

  • Lex:
But the real question now is… when the hell will The Winds of Winter come out?

Hopefully before season 6 airs on HBO.

  • So… George how about “Winds of Winter“? How’s that coming along.

Tuesday July 12. 2011. I will have the decks cleared and my time reserved.

I would be most excellenty pleased if Roy Dotrice is confirmed as the reader of the audio book and if it same were to be confirmed as being available on the same day and date.

Then – I won’t quite know what to do. Buy ’em both, I guess, sit back with my iPod and ignore the internet for at least a week.

    *sigh* Looking forward to it!

  • Coming out of my lurker-cave to express how friggin stoked I am…

I literally jumped up and started dancing during class, when I was reading about the release date. Although I’m one of the more newer readers with finishing AFFC last year, you can’t believe how excited I am right now!

The only thing that bothers me is the cover of the Bantam edition. Many poeple sure can’t understand why someone could bother about something like that,
but I’m a sucker for details in that matter and I like a good organized bookshelf with books from the same series or author having a similar cover design. Is it really the final cover or is there any chance that this cover is used: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/gallery/art/dragons01.jpg?

Anyways, can’t wait to finally read ADWD :D

  • I’m not inclined to believe that this fish is hooked until it’s lying cooked on my dining table.

  • Stefan Langmann: The only thing that bothers me is the cover of the Bantam edition. Many poeple sure can’t understand why someone could bother about something like that,
but I’m a sucker for details in that matter and I like a good organized bookshelf with books from the same series or author having a similar cover design

That’s one thing I’ll never have with ASoIaF.

GoT UK paperback pic of Red Keep cover
CoK UK Trade Paperback pic of Dragonstone cover (so larger than GoT)
SoS UK Hardback book club edition Beric/Hound cover (so smaller than normal hardback)
AFFC UK Normal Hardback Chalice cover

So if (Ha ha) I get ADWD in hardback it will be the first time that I’ll have two books in the series that actually match up.

  • clemintine: I’m digging the new cover, with the shield. Of course it kindof sucks that they changed styles half way through, but oh well. I thought the original illustrations were crummy. This is much classier, true to the books.

Totally agree. I hope they’ll go back and do cover designs for the older books that fit with this one. I’m a little worried they’ll be too busy doing TV tie-in covers, though.

  • 900 pages?…

You can support many a bottoms with that. That’s what I call true leadership George!!!

  • Zack:
I hope Martin comes to NYC for book signings shortly after it comes out. I wonder how likelyit is that he’d do a nationwide or even a worldwide signing tour.

YES!! I would love to get my book signed by George! Come to New York City, George! Or better yet, come to your native NJ!

I’m from NJ, about 15-20 minutes from where George grew up. People from New Jersey have to take a lot of shit from those from other states. However, we have a lot of things/people to be proud of, and GRRM is at the top of my list!

  • Everyone…Borders is offering the book at 50% off for pre-orders…God I hope they have Canadian division…and if not…oh well ill order it from the states…I’m overloading on GOT news today…and loving it…I’m so happy ….

  • There is absolutely no one around me that understands how holy-freaking-awesome this news is! I just *squeed* and got some rather odd looks. *happy dance ensues*

  • Will amazon.co.uk sell the book on july 12 as well? Because it has three dates: september 29 2011, september 28 2010 and for the paperback somewhere in april 2012. Is it normal for paperbacks to be available later on? Or is this an error. Because I have never bought a new book (I have experience with buying books the day they were released with the Harry Potter novels, and bookshops always had both paperback and hardcover editions in stock)

  • >Is only half way through A Clash of Kings
    >Has effectively 4 months to read something like 2,700 pages

Yeah, I was a late starter… Nice to know it’ll be ready for when I finally get there, though.

  • All this news is a bit of overload… That’s OK , numb is good. I usualy check things out here with my morning coffee , but couldn’t today. Now it’s noon and I’m in the middle of a “splosion..I don’t know what to check out first. Maybe it’s all a dream…

  • Wha…nu…but…

    *Rushes over to GRRM’s blog*

    B-but I…

    It’s…

    But that means…

    YES!!!!!!

Let the wild rumpus BEGIN! HA HA HA!

  • clemintine: Methinks this website needs a 2nd counter

Indeed! Another counter, right under the first one, with equally large font and equal temporal precision counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds for the release of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS!!!!

    *smiles showing all teeth*

  • Best news I’ve heard in a long, long time. 4 months to wait, you say? After 6 years that’ll feel shorter than a certain dwarf we all know and love.

  • Benjamin Symons,

I worked in a book store (U.S.A.) and the paperback versions were never available at the same time as the hardcover release. I’m not sure if it is a specific length of time before the paperbacks are available or if it depends on the sales figures for the hardcover editions, though.

  • Raynette Schroeder,
Arryn’s eyes have been covered with flat stones with eye-like designs painted on them – presumably a funeral custom, like the coins that are put on corpses’ eyes in some cultures.

  • Coltaine777: Everyone…Borders is offering the book at 50% off for pre-orders…God I hope they have Canadian division…and if not…oh well ill order it from the states…I’m overloading on GOT news today…and loving it…I’m so happy ….

It’s likely that Amazon.ca or Chapters.ca will have it 50% off too as they often do with bestsellers and if the Canadian dollar remains strong, they’re likely to match American prices (so for us, it’ll be cheaper!)

  • Bene: clemin

Yeah, I saw those in person. My trip to the fantasy section of a German language bookstore was quite amusing. There’s one cover with a shirtless Conan-esque Jamie. And Wheel of Time is like 30+ books long in German.

  • YES!!!!! Brilliant, about to finish AFfC for the first time and going to go back to do a re-read….im actually thinking about checking out the audio books. Are there different versions, read by different people, which is the best?

  • So much new posts (trailer, Making of Game of Thrones): but this one’s the best – so happy !!!

  • I think you mean “AWESOME” German covers. Do they have anything to do with the books? Nah. But are they cool? Oh yeah!

  • Maybe a dumb question, but if you pre-order from Amazon do they ship the day it’s released? As in you have to wait 5-10 business days to start reading. Or do they ship early so you recieve it on or around the release date?

  • I am actually totally shocked. I wasn’t expecting ADWD until next year. Ive got it on preorder at Amazon. I might have to order two because i dont know if hubby can wait for me to finish. but he has been doing audio books lately so maybe he will audio book it..

On another great note one of my BFF’s is in LA this week for the NAACP Image awards for a book she was the ghost writer for. I hope she wins!!! Or at least meets some stars she likes :) Go Mary! http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-556053. Im always happy when a fellow Bard gets some well deserved recognition..

  • Just wanted to add the cover looks AWESOME! Way better then the plain boring covers that they’re currently using in the U.S.

  • DavidG,

The Roy Dotrice versions are the ones most people prefer. There’s a version read by some American guy that’s not nearly as good. Unfortunately, Dotrice never did a recording for Book 4 (he was unavailable at the time, I think) but he did the first 3.

  • Raynette Schroeder: It’s likely that Amazon.ca or Chapters.ca will have it 50% off too as they often do with bestsellers and if the Canadian dollar remains strong, they’re likely to match American prices (so for us, it’ll be cheaper!)

    thankyou for the info…my friend..

  • This is excellent news. I can’t wait to read it. Been waiting (somewhat) patiently for some time.

As an aside, I visited a bookstore today during my lunch break and there were already Trade and Mass Market copies of the series with the new UK-style cover on them (i’m in Canada). It makes you wonder how long they’ve been waiting and planning for this announcement that they had time to ship those out. They are also all branded with an HBO plug across the top.

I’m one of those weird anal people that likes their bookshelf to match up. I have the mass markets that were produced before Feast, with a pic of Jon(?) outside Winterfel for AGOT, Stannis for ACOK, and Cat and Edmure with the flaming arrow in ASOS. Then when Feast came out they switched to the “clip art” format. I bought hardcovers of all those online about a year ago (I’m hoping GRRM will return to my city so that I can get the signed like my copy of Feast).

I wish they would just pick one and stick with it :P. but hey, they’ll make more money this way with people buying multiple versions. Sadly, I like these newer covers the best….

  • MikeL,

I’m in Canada too, I didn’t know the new versions were available yet. I’ll have to check a bookstore tomorrow, just to see them!

I have the original paperbacks (illustrations of characters/scenes), and the clip art hardcovers. My paperbacks are signed by George. I think the UK covers are the best ones, but I don’t know if I can convince myself to buy a 3rd set…

  • Irina: My 18th birthday is 6 days after de release day It’ll make for a nice present

My 21st birthday is a week after. Yay for early birthday presents!

  • MikeL,

and did they stick with the ‘sword’ cover for ‘a Game of Thrones’? (The one they use in the UK for aDwD)

  • I’m excited too. Seems like I’ve finally found my long lost book and now I can continue reading the story I so much enjoyed.
Now, about preordering, thanks but no. In my mind is kind of strange behavior to read a portion of something I quite adore and have a chance to continue it six years later. I truly envy those people who are still in the middle of ASoS or FfC and they get to read Dance on time. I believe there will be people that find themselves in that situation when tWoW is published, so I don’t want to feel the same about them.
As they say, the book will be out there soon so I have plenty of time to buy it whenever I feel like it.
I have much more hope in the series. Good luck to everybody in getting the book by the time they want to.

  • Yaaaaay!!! Finally. Now I won’t have to go through withdrawal when the first season of GOT is over. I’m soooo dying to go to amazon right now and pre-order it, but I also feel the need to stand outside a bookstore for hours for this one. New summer vacation plans = sitting on my balcony reading!!!

  • Now I have a little over 4 months to finish Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series, so I can read A Dance with Dragons as soon as possible. I’m on the last 50 pages of book 4, so I have about 6 weeks per book for the last 3. Very doable.

  • I can’t speak for a Kindle edition, but the Nook edition is available for pre-order now too!

  • Hip-hip-Hooray!!!! Huzahhh and all the other good stuff. Between the trailers, book anouncements and all other news, March is a flurry of activities before the series starts! An exiciting time for ASOIF!

I shall celebrate the good news by getting piss drunk!

  • I am soooo looking farward to reading this but is this going to be the final book? I know the manuscript is huge but I can’t help thinking that if it is as detailed as the other books (which i’m certain it will be) one book can not hope to finish off each characters story or tie up all of the loose ends. If its not going to be the final book many years am I going to have to wait for the next one or to see if Deanerys finally gets the throne of westeros?

  • Catherine,

There are two more books planned after Dance with Dragons. So it may be another 10-12 years before we get to the end of the story :)
