GoT Costumes feature now available online
By Hear Me Roar on in Media.

Speaking of costuming, HBO has made the much talked about costume video freely available on their YouTube channel, to everyone’s delight.

Hear Me Roar: Lots of new shots in this one. Not entire scenes, of course, and I am glad it is so, but it teases nicely, giving us an even better idea about the looks while the commentary provides the rationale behind the decisions. I love it all. Though we feel we have seen so much already, there is actually still room for surprise and awe aplenty when the show premieres in 18 days … and then every Sunday again, week by week, episode by episode.

I actually feel saturated for a while already and havn’t been looking at all the clips anymore since two weeks. The massive amount of ‘making of’ stuff that HBO has put out already would be more than enough to nicely fill up the DVD extras!

I love costumes in general (I’ve been known to see rather bad movies solely for the costumes) and I loved hearing about the different influences that they used for these rather than just going generic “Middle Ages European.” And Michele Clapton has very interesting ideas about the characters, like her shrewd assessment of Robert and how she says Cersei is always wearing metal belts like armor (girdled for war, as it were!)

I’m consistently amazed at the level of thought that’s gone into every detail of this production.

Finally I get to see this video!
As a costumer, I love listening to what inspired costume designers to go one way or another, so this was a real treat for me.
The choices were very interesting. Not really what I had in mind or what I would have done (in regards to King’s Landing, mostly), but I liked hearing about why the choices were made. Very good stuff.
On a side note… I am getting a tad concerned about Sansa as well now… I’m in the minority being a Sansa fan (she’s my favorite character)… and from the clips we have seen, Sophie is coming off a bit silted. And Sansa seems to be portrayed much stiffer and snobbier than I had envisioned her… I always thought she was a bit more dreamy and giggly, like her head was always in the clouds, but from what I’ve seen she’s coming off more along the lines of Veruca Salt. But I guess it’s only been a few clips so I’ll have to wait and see… and I am looking forward to seeing how she transforms over the story.

Nice to see how they cut Donal Noye: Tyrion simply gets his piece. If you’re very literally on the books, it doesn’t make too much sense, but I think the way they portray Tyrion fits the series well.

Nice video. Great to have additional scenes stuck in there too. Quite like Dany’s dresses. Love Jaime’s leather coat. My fav costumes would have to be the Stark ones. Love the cloaks and the look as a whole.
As for the extra scenes, loved the one with Jon and Tyrion. Pity it’s not Donal Noye though… Arya “seven hells”! Exactly my reaction to Sansa. I find her very irritating as a character but that’s ok. Robert and his belly! I wonder what Dany was saying in Dothraki….
So now all we need is the direwolf scene and the extended Stark feature, hint hint HBO!

I can tell I’m really going to hate Sansa in the show. The overdramatic acting along with her general personality is really going to piss me off.

As for Tyrion, the accent is still somewhat bothering me but I’m guessing I’ll adjust eventually.

Overall though I’m very impressed with the amount of attention that went into the costumes and how she designed the costumes around the characters and their backgrounds.

I wonder if the audience will hate Cersei less than in the books. It seems like every scene of her is followed by a scene of Robert doing something crude or unfaithful, so I can see it being harder to hate her like in the novels.

Towards the end we also see that it’s Irri that has gotten the task of teaching dothraki to Dany since the role of Jhiqui hasn’t been cast. The word she is teaching Dany is athjahakar which means pride or prowess which is a word that derives from the word jahak which means hairbraid.

GAME OF THRONES: CREATING THE DOTHRA… New
GAME OF THRONES: DIREWOLVES SCENE New
GAME OF THRONES: EXTERIOR SETS & LOC… New
GAME OF THRONES: INSIDE THE NIGHT’S … New
GAME OF THRONES: THE OTHER HOUSES New

Also, the 15 minute sneak peak looks like it will be up there.

They sure are releasing a crap-ton of content. Not complaining, but it makes me curious what they will put on the DVD special features. Maybe they will just re-use all this stuff and get the fans a-whining :)

Every bit of new content just makes the series appear more and more amazing.

From the start the casting decision i’ve been most doubtful of has been Addy as Robert. Just couldn’t see how someone of his stature and acting background could pull off the renowned warrior and reluctant king… but he sure seems to be doing well with it!

    Chris,

Arrrgh, just moved into a new place and got my internet and cable (w/HBO of course) hooked up yesterday from Time Warner Cable. The HBO On Demand has a bunch of stuff (Costumes, Extended Houses clips), but they won’t launch on HBO Go until the end of April! Hopefully we will get the same clips as Comcast On Demand, but likely a week later.

Slightly off-topic, but when I was unpacking my books I pulled out my old UK hardcover of AFFC and noticed the cover has a quote from the Guardian, “Characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias.” Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes! Even back in 2005 they knew which show would be better!

I am going to have to stop with all the extras and features. You know why? Because after a while, when you see the actual show, you are no longer seeing the character, but the actor. Does anyone know what I mean by that? So when we’re watching Lord Eddard Stark in a scene, I’m really seeing Sean Bean because I will have remembered him talking about his wardrobe or something. Does that make sense? Or instead of seeing Tyrion, I will see Peter Dinklage saying the words “Wits and charm,” like he has done in all the clips.

    Ack…

And I really love GRRM’s description of the Reach as being “where the whole concept of chivalry and knighthood and Queens of Love and Beauty was born” or something like that. Makes perfect sense.

I thought this was a wonderful video, and timed very well with the show premiering in less than three weeks (I think I just peed a little). I found it interesting that they say time and again how, when the show comes out, they want people to just “get lost in it.” And yet to be perfectly honest, I got completely lost in just this video alone. It ended and I sort of snapped back into reality. This show looks gorgeous…one hell of a project. Not long now until Winter truly arrives.

    Anonymous,

I think that’s true. I think Cersei is going to seem more dimensional and more sympathetic.
That quick glimpse where she is seated next to Catelyn at dinner time, and Cat asks her if it’s her first time in the North, her expression and the way she says ‘Lovely country’ is really dead-on perfect. I think Lena is bringing a certain prim subtlety to Cersei that improves upon the character.

I do have one tiny costume quibble, though.I don’t like the way Dany’s wedding dress looks like it’s built over a bra..grrrr.( OTOH I like her “inspection” dress very much)

Oh well ,on the upside ,I seem to recall she won’t be in it for long. :)

Mormegil: Except we’ve had Sansa say both versions .

I don’t really think that matters. The difference is common in lots of words when spoken at normal speed, and even moreso when somebody is speaking quickly, or in anger or frustration, and doesn’t take the time to properly enunciate.

Americans (and perhaps other English speakers, I wouldn’t know) turn “I” into something like “ah” when they say, for example, “I’m going out. I should be back in a few hours”

Multi syllable names (Ter-e-sa, O-liv-i-a) are often shortened to two…Treesa, O-liv-ya. Not many people put a lot of emphasis on enunciation. Arya is similar to Olivia in this example.

I don’t think there’s any more to it than that.

    Knurk,

I don’t know how to rip it! Give me a link to the process (shareware requried?) and I’ll give it a try. The direwolves scene is almost a let-down because it’s such an iconic, pivotal moment but it seemed very low-budget to me–primarily because there is a hissing noise in the background (especially at first) that makes it seem like they recorded the sound right there on the spot instead of dubbing. Also, the direwolf isn’t nearly as big as it seems in most of the stills–it’s up on a rock so it seemed like this gigantic creature, then you get a look from the back and it’s maybe twice the size of a large dog (instead of four or six times as large). The lack of snow also seemed kind of wrong to me, but I hate complaining about such things because I’m a big believer in the producers and what they’re doing (no eyebrow-gate for me).

I thought the direwolf looked ginormous!

The audio was weird though. At first I thought it was the stream, but there seems to be a low level drone throughout the whole scene. I don’t know. Maybe it’s just the sound design. I thought there would be a squelch when Ned pulled the antler out. Speaking of antlers, in the book, I think it is Caetlyn’s pov, she is very worried by this sign or omen of a dead direwolf with an antler in its throat. It never comes up again, but when I first read it, I expected some kind of antler people invading Winterfell. Does it have some other significance?

What do you mean? The direwolf is the Stark sigil, the stag is the Baratheon sigil. The omen they feared, then, with the direwolf dying from the stag’s antlers in its throat, should be rather clear. Both houses would do great harm to each other…

Yeah she doesnt really need to speak to get that “hawkish crazy” look. Now just imagine her breastfeeding her sweet Robin. If I remember correctly from the books she still breast feeds her toddler. But her child in the book is younger than HBO aged the child I believe. It would be just interesting to know if they kept that aspect of her overprotective creepy mothering in the show.

    Posted March 30, 2011 at 6:07 pm | Permalink

All crude joking aside…does anyone else think that Theon’s scene with Ros might be used to wisely establish his background? I like to think that after this sex scene that Theon explains his father’s rebellion and him becoming a ward to Ned Stark. I also think that one scene with Tyrion shown in the Lannister’s video might give more insight to him as a character.

Knurk: Dom, Wasn’t Ros a KL-whore with red hair? I thought she had a part with Dinklage but i could be totally wrong.

It looks like Ros travels up with the Kings Party.

I had suggested that it could be Ros* who leaves the box with Lysa’s message (in the book we never know who it is but it had to be someone in the Kings party) but the show is just going with a message via Raven.

*If it was also shown that she worked for Littlefinger it would have been a bit of a clue for the audience of who was behind things.

    Stefan,

I’m surprised that the fact they gave Donal Noye’s talk here to Tyrion hasn’t garnered more comment. Considering how huge the cast already is I think we are going to see a lot of this. (key plot points executed by minor characters being either consolidated into each other or given to the leads) Unavoidable if they don’t want to seriously confuse the viewer. I think that their handling of this one indicates that we really don’t need to be worried about it though. (they seem to know what they are doing)

Having seen a little more Tyrion in this video, I now think Dinklage’s performance is very arch and stiff. Not only is he too good-looking for Tyrion, he is visibly struggling to portray his English(ish) accent.

In the books, wasn’t Tyrion often self-effacing? In all these clips he is never that.. never earthy.. never wise.. just arch.

For those that have watched the direwolf finding scene that Stevethepirate so kindly posted on youtube. What do you think of the moment where Jon finds the albino pup and Theons reaction?

I personally REAALLY don’t like the change from the books. I can handle the no snow(no hidden baby white wolfy making a yip to be found) but the removal of what I see as a critical line to just the finding and a quick quip by Theon a odd and senseless change.

Okay sounds encouraging. Next question. I wonder what HBO will do for the ratings and “presented in HD” scenes. True Blood has some fun ones with blood and fangs popping out of the graphics. BE has a cool look with the bottle graphics too.

Something with dragonfire might be cool, but it might also be TMI, so I’m going to guess they will go with something like the snow effects or possibly the raven effects they use in the trailers. Any other guesses?

In the previous features there was always a spot visible that was not painted white. It was quite obvious at the beginning of the scene as Caitlin walked towards Ned.
They changed the angle somehow (zoomed in a bit I think) and now its all white. I compared the scenes and it is not just shortened. Cat starts walking at the same spot in all of them.

    Wolfheart,

televisionary on twitter keeps saying good things about the show; his one semi-negative point is that there is a lot of “condensing”. The truth is, there are going to be a lot of minor things like this that are shortened to quips out of necessity to keep things moving at a good pace, and judging by the reactions so far from critics that was a wise decision. GoT seems the opposite of shows like the Borgias, which are most people in rooms talking – it feels like things are happening all the time and there is always something exciting around the corner!
But I do hope that this bit was edited from what is in the actual show, because it felt a bit jumpy and cut-off.

Then again even the bigger gates have come from lack of knowledge it seems. Even eyebrow gate is pointless since I went to school with a girl with natural blond hair and black eyebrows. A far bigger contrast than what the Targaryens have. It’s even possible to have two different colored eyebrows so it’s all about reading up on how it is.

The original idea* was for a Raven to fly over a map from the Wall to Kings’s Landing via Winterfell and other places with the map becoming reality at each Castle.

A tweet from one of the reviewers however mentions gears so I’m guessing rather than becoming reality the various castles turn from flat map images into 3D models via some clockwork mechinism.

As you said though we’ll have to wait for Episode 2 to see if this guess is correct.

*This was the description from the leaked pilot script

    CREDIT SEQUENCE

CLOSE on a pair of ancient, gnarled hands writing a message
on a small parchment scroll. The old man (we never see his
face) tightly rolls the scroll, binds it with a black ribbon,
and ties it with a leather strip to the leg of a BLACK RAVEN.
The old man lifts the raven off his desk; it flaps its dark
wings and flies out of the open chamber window.
The raven flies away from Castle Black, a large and ancient
fortress dwarfed by what lies behind it: the Wall. Older than
history, this is the 800-foot-high barrier of ice and stone
that guards the northern edge of the Seven Kingdoms.
As the raven gains altitude, the landscape below it
TRANSFORMS into a map of Westeros. The Wall is revealed to
cross the entire continent, a boundary between the Haunted
Forest to the north and the civilized lands to the south.
The raven flies south over the map, on which the cities,
regions and features of the land are named: Winterfell, the
Kingsroad, Moat Cailin, the Riverlands, the Vale of Arryn.
Occasionally the bird dips down, and the map resolves back
into reality for just long enough to give us a view of some
points of interest: Winterfell’s old stone towers, full of
cold beauty. The foreboding Eyrie castle high atop the Vale
of Arryn, a feat of montane architecture that would have been
    impossible for medieval engineers.
When the raven reaches King’s Landing, the map resolves back
into reality as the bird drops down into the dirty sprawl of
    the capital.
The raven flies through the open gates of the Red Keep, a
massive compound with red walls the color of blood. The bird
flies through an open window into the throne room, to land on
the Iron Throne itself– a throne built from the hammered
swords of a thousand defeated enemies.
The raven pecks at its wings, cleaning itself after the long
journey, alone in the empty throne room.
    END CREDIT SEQUENCE

I have tons of cool conspiracy theories about the BF! :D

But no, this time I was merely referring to him appearing in a supposed Season 2. If Martin makes no mention of him, the suspense grows; when (hopefully) his presence in S2 is announced, fans will go “YAY Blackfish!” and new viewers will go “Oh look, Cat has a cool eccentric warrior uncle.”

Also hopefully it could be a nice surprise because they likely will choose a charismatic actor, to compensate for the massacre of charismatic characters in S1.

    Tywin's Bastard,

I think stating that all teenage girls behave a certain way is a far cry from being a fact (such as the eyebrow thing, or any of the various other gate-related fact checks people have done on here).
To me, this feels more like a difference in interpretation of the character. People who like Sansa tend to focus on the dreamy, naive side of her personality, and those who don’t like her mostly read her in terms of how stuck-up she is. I admit, when I first read GoT, I didn’t like Sansa at all and tended to view her beneath a rather judgmental and simplistic lens. After thinking about it, however, I realized that there was a lot more to her, and that it is precisely that head-in-the-clouds attitude that informs everything she does. I mean, you can have her be bitchy and still get that across (I wasn’t completely blind to it on my first read), but I think it is a disservice to the character to make her just a bratty teenager.
THAT SAID, I don’t think we can know from what we’ve seen that she is universally portrayed that way in the show. So far we’ve seen very few snippets of dialogue from her, and most of what the audience has been given has relied heavily on the juxtaposition of Arya and Sansa, versus looking at Sansa’s motivations on their own merits.
I do think the line with “please, please” was poorly delivered, and I don’t think that can excused on the basis that she’s playing a teenager. I do, however, also think that it was a poorly written line as well, and I’m not sure anyone could say it and not make it sound terrible. Not sure if it’s from the book or not (damnit, do I need to do another re-read already? Haha), but I suspect that it is not, as that scene certainly isn’t.
I think Sophie will turn out to be quite good in the role overall, despite that one bad line.

ALSO. Did we talk about this before??? I feel like you and I had this exact discussion a few posts back?? OR AM I GOING INSANE?
    I am probably going insane.

Thanks, Steve (of the piratical variety) for supporting the bottom. (:

As to the opening, it may benefit them to air the first episode with the credits, since in the case of this show it might help newcomers to orient themselves better.

    Kana,

Yea, we have seen the beheading scene multiple times, and Ned’s lines have had a totally different feel depending on how the lines were spliced up and edited together.

It’s totally justified to have worries if you aren’t feeling it, but I’m trying to save my final judgements until I see the final product and see full dialogue in the intended flow of the show.
