The long wait is (almost) over, ASoIaF fans! James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly has broken the news (and GRRM confirms it) that A Dance with Dragons will publish on July 12th, 2011 in the US. George R. R. Martin is not finished the book yet, but is close enough that the publisher has decided to announce the date. Hibberd has a couple quotes from Martin as well and promises more in an interview to be published in the print-version of this weeks EW.
A Dance With Dragons will be published on July 12. The manuscript is huge — the publisher estimates the hardcover edition will run more than 900 pages, putting it about the same length as the longest book in the series, A Storm of Swords. Schedule your summer vacation accordingly.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What took so long?
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I’m not sure I have a good answer. If I did, I would have taken less time. It’s enormous. It’s as long as A Storm of Swords. It’s very complicated. I have a lot of characters and points of view. And I’ve been doing a ton of rewriting, trying to get it where I wanted it to be. Some of these chapters I’ve rewritten more times than I can count before I’m satisfied with them. Can you tease something from the book?
I don’t want to spoil any surprises. I can say all the characters people have been waiting for are there: Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Tyrion. There’s also new characters, and viewpoints from characters who did not have viewpoints before. For more of Martin’s interview — where he compares Dragons to the previous four books, and weighs in on the HBO adaptation — pick up this week’s print edition of Entertainment Weekly.
Winter Is Coming: HYPE! Is this really happening? I never thought this day would come. April 17th, July 12th. I don’t know which one I’m looking forward to more now.
UPDATE: Voyager, GRRM’s UK Publisher, has confirmed that A Dance with Dragons will publish on July 12 in the UK as well!

From Martin’s website:
I wonder in which sense he compares it to ASoS. We already know it’s a long as ASoS, do you think he could also be hinting at a similar level of character slaughter/action/throwing your book to the wall to that of his 3rd installment?

YYYYYeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was apparent for some time now that he would finish the manuscript soon, but after such a long wait one tends to try to keep ones hopes down… 900 pages of utter joy!!!! Woohoooo!!!!! Wait, 900 pages? That’ll take me what…2 days to finish it? And then a long (hopefully shorter) wait for the next one again? No, I couldn’t be happier right now, but I won’t start reading Dance before the entire series is finished. It’s gonna be a terribly long, difficult, even painfull wait, but it is the only way I will REALLY be able to enjoy reading aDwD…
Anyway, congrats George, and know this: despite the moaning about the inexplicably long wait, we will forever protect your back and always support your bottom!

That’s pretty amazing. Fortunately, I am one of the lucky ones.
Why, pray tell?
Because I only just finished AFFC last night!
Yup. I read the other three books years ago but never bothered to read Feast. So as the HBO hype ramped up, I decided to do read them all again and end with Feast.
So instead of waiting five years, or however long it’s been, I only have to wait a few months!
But I feel the pain of the fans who have waited all this time. At least I don’t have to go back and re-read in anticipation of ADWD!

Sjwenings, true, but he has like one chapter left. I think even GRRM can manage to finish that by April (assuming the 3 month press time).

Ohhhhh my God, this is awesome. I was planning a vacation to Europe for July, but my friends and I decided to move it to August. And now I am SO GLAD we did, because I will be able to scoop up DwD and read it the moment it hits the shelves!!
I was just looking at the calendar, and with an April 17 debut, and 10 episodes, the show should run through June 19. That gives us an approximate 3 weeks before the book release! Perfect timing! :)

This is superawesome and made my day, or probably week or month… Some long expected news, and it’s been clear for a while that the end was near, but a firm publication date cannot fail to cause a great deal of excitement that I may or may not need to temper with a fine drink :)
SylvanaQuote Reply
I just hope it isn’t as confusing as AFFC.
I know, I know. Don’t hate me. But some of the chapters I liked, and some I found totally confusing. Especially when you get to some of the chapters where a character is giving backstory on Westeros genealogy. Like that chapter with Jaime and his aunt. I forget her name.
There are a few other examples, too. It’s like, “Why am I reading about all these cousins and dukes and squires and Sers, when they have nothing to do with the story?”
It is amazing world-building, but is it really necessary?
I think GRRM must have a very lax editor who lets him put in whatever he wants.
I’ll probably be getting a visit from Ilyn Payne for saying all this.
HollyoakQuote Reply
Call me negative: I’ll believe it when I see it.
RoseQuote Reply
Strange that they deviate from the style of the previous 4 books, but this one is a huge improvement. Voyager seems to keep their original design, that is in style with their previous (re-)releases, it’s a shame though they didn’t keep the old style-covers when they first published the first three books, those were amazing.
KnurkQuote Reply
With Game of Thrones being first aired on the 17th of April and A Dance With Dragons released on the 12th of June, I think it’s more a calculation than a coincidence. I guess Martin’s publishers have told him to delay the end of his writing for a few months last year…

I agree with you wrt aFfC
Primarily I think that it needed SERIOUS editing, and the events of aFfC should have taken half as many chapters to tell (and maybe 2/3 of the words). The editors probably just wanted something out ASAP to make money so they didn’t care how bad it was.
However, I am hopeful that this time GRRM is cutting things to the bone and aDwD will be much improved compared to aFfC. He seems to be writing and rewriting and agonizing over every word.

Given how long GRRM has taken to finish Dance, to the dismay of his publisher, do you really find it likely that GRRM would suddenly take a break from his perfectionism for Feast and release something he didn’t think was really good just to get something out on time? If so, by what logic wouldn’t he have done that with Dance then since he’s been pressed far harder for this book? I don’t see any coherent logic there and I also find it very questionable that the people he trusts with editing would only be out for money and don’t care about quality.

but I’m a sucker for details in that matter and I like a good organized bookshelf with books from the same series or author having a similar cover design. Is it really the final cover or is there any chance that this cover is used: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/gallery/art/dragons01.jpg?
Anyways, can’t wait to finally read ADWD :D

That’s one thing I’ll never have with ASoIaF.
GoT UK paperback pic of Red Keep cover
CoK UK Trade Paperback pic of Dragonstone cover (so larger than GoT)
SoS UK Hardback book club edition Beric/Hound cover (so smaller than normal hardback)
AFFC UK Normal Hardback Chalice cover
So if (Ha ha) I get ADWD in hardback it will be the first time that I’ll have two books in the series that actually match up.

Totally agree. I hope they’ll go back and do cover designs for the older books that fit with this one. I’m a little worried they’ll be too busy doing TV tie-in covers, though.

YES!! I would love to get my book signed by George! Come to New York City, George! Or better yet, come to your native NJ!
I’m from NJ, about 15-20 minutes from where George grew up. People from New Jersey have to take a lot of shit from those from other states. However, we have a lot of things/people to be proud of, and GRRM is at the top of my list!

Will amazon.co.uk sell the book on july 12 as well? Because it has three dates: september 29 2011, september 28 2010 and for the paperback somewhere in april 2012. Is it normal for paperbacks to be available later on? Or is this an error. Because I have never bought a new book (I have experience with buying books the day they were released with the Harry Potter novels, and bookshops always had both paperback and hardcover editions in stock)

Benjamin Symons,
I worked in a book store (U.S.A.) and the paperback versions were never available at the same time as the hardcover release. I’m not sure if it is a specific length of time before the paperbacks are available or if it depends on the sales figures for the hardcover editions, though.

Arryn’s eyes have been covered with flat stones with eye-like designs painted on them – presumably a funeral custom, like the coins that are put on corpses’ eyes in some cultures.

It’s likely that Amazon.ca or Chapters.ca will have it 50% off too as they often do with bestsellers and if the Canadian dollar remains strong, they’re likely to match American prices (so for us, it’ll be cheaper!)

Yeah, I saw those in person. My trip to the fantasy section of a German language bookstore was quite amusing. There’s one cover with a shirtless Conan-esque Jamie. And Wheel of Time is like 30+ books long in German.

I think you mean “AWESOME” German covers. Do they have anything to do with the books? Nah. But are they cool? Oh yeah!
KGQuote Reply
Maybe a dumb question, but if you pre-order from Amazon do they ship the day it’s released? As in you have to wait 5-10 business days to start reading. Or do they ship early so you recieve it on or around the release date?

I am actually totally shocked. I wasn’t expecting ADWD until next year. Ive got it on preorder at Amazon. I might have to order two because i dont know if hubby can wait for me to finish. but he has been doing audio books lately so maybe he will audio book it..
On another great note one of my BFF’s is in LA this week for the NAACP Image awards for a book she was the ghost writer for. I hope she wins!!! Or at least meets some stars she likes :) Go Mary! http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-556053. Im always happy when a fellow Bard gets some well deserved recognition..

DavidG,
The Roy Dotrice versions are the ones most people prefer. There’s a version read by some American guy that’s not nearly as good. Unfortunately, Dotrice never did a recording for Book 4 (he was unavailable at the time, I think) but he did the first 3.

This is excellent news. I can’t wait to read it. Been waiting (somewhat) patiently for some time.
As an aside, I visited a bookstore today during my lunch break and there were already Trade and Mass Market copies of the series with the new UK-style cover on them (i’m in Canada). It makes you wonder how long they’ve been waiting and planning for this announcement that they had time to ship those out. They are also all branded with an HBO plug across the top.
I’m one of those weird anal people that likes their bookshelf to match up. I have the mass markets that were produced before Feast, with a pic of Jon(?) outside Winterfel for AGOT, Stannis for ACOK, and Cat and Edmure with the flaming arrow in ASOS. Then when Feast came out they switched to the “clip art” format. I bought hardcovers of all those online about a year ago (I’m hoping GRRM will return to my city so that I can get the signed like my copy of Feast).
I wish they would just pick one and stick with it :P. but hey, they’ll make more money this way with people buying multiple versions. Sadly, I like these newer covers the best….

MikeL,
I hear you! I’ve been trying to get a full set of the same covers for a really long time, but i hate the american Clip art covers. This makes me really happy.

I’m in Canada too, I didn’t know the new versions were available yet. I’ll have to check a bookstore tomorrow, just to see them!
I have the original paperbacks (illustrations of characters/scenes), and the clip art hardcovers. My paperbacks are signed by George. I think the UK covers are the best ones, but I don’t know if I can convince myself to buy a 3rd set…

I’m excited too. Seems like I’ve finally found my long lost book and now I can continue reading the story I so much enjoyed.
Now, about preordering, thanks but no. In my mind is kind of strange behavior to read a portion of something I quite adore and have a chance to continue it six years later. I truly envy those people who are still in the middle of ASoS or FfC and they get to read Dance on time. I believe there will be people that find themselves in that situation when tWoW is published, so I don’t want to feel the same about them.
As they say, the book will be out there soon so I have plenty of time to buy it whenever I feel like it.
I have much more hope in the series. Good luck to everybody in getting the book by the time they want to.

Now I have a little over 4 months to finish Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series, so I can read A Dance with Dragons as soon as possible. I’m on the last 50 pages of book 4, so I have about 6 weeks per book for the last 3. Very doable.

I am soooo looking farward to reading this but is this going to be the final book? I know the manuscript is huge but I can’t help thinking that if it is as detailed as the other books (which i’m certain it will be) one book can not hope to finish off each characters story or tie up all of the loose ends. If its not going to be the final book many years am I going to have to wait for the next one or to see if Deanerys finally gets the throne of westeros?

There are two more books planned after Dance with Dragons. So it may be another 10-12 years before we get to the end of the story :)
