First ever WiC moot in NYC

Well, with HBO doing this food truck promo so close me, I just had to make a trip up the Turnpike to sample some flavors of Westeros. And I figure, hey, there’s got to be a bunch of WiC readers that will be doing the same thing, why don’t we get together and hang out?

So here’s the plan, such as it is right now. I will be heading up to NYC on Friday evening (April 1), with plans to get to the food truck as close to 6 PM as possible. After partaking of some Westerosi food, I plan to hit up a local pub and enjoy some Dornish Ale. If anyone is free that evening and would like to join me and the wife (who, despite being a vegetarian, still wants to go), feel free!

If you would like to go, please comment in the thread below and state your interest. This way I have a rough idea of how many people to expect. Also make sure when leaving your comment you use a valid email/Twitter/Facebook, so I can get in touch with you once we have some more details.

See you in the Big Apple!

This sounds cool, I’m in, once we’ve wrapped the truck. Maybe I’ll drag the rest of the Campfire team along with me (as long as we haven’t been mobbed by fans who got there after the food ran out :) )

If you want, I can also bring one of the scent boxes for people to see – maybe even bring some of the rejected scents (like”Sandsilk” and full-strength “Khal’s Herd”), so we can really stink up the joint :)

Harry Hogg: God damn why do I not live in NYC?

Harry, I ask myself that every day. I will not be there, but I wanted to urge fans who are in the neighborhood who are on the fence about attending or are nervous or wondering if it will be weird meeting strangers, let me tell you from my experience with other fandoms and other websites that the answer is: NO!

No it will not be weird.

No, people attending are not weird.

No, you should not be nervous.

I have found that such meetings can make great, lasting friendships and if they don’t, they at least make fun, like-minded interactions with people who share a passion. If you have a chance to go, then GO!

I am 2,000 miles away and I checked flights and costs, mostly just for fun. But, do yourself a favor. (And, ignore my pic up there, it is a joke and I am not weird either!)

Anyway, such chances don’t fall in your lap often. Go go go go go go.

    (And A.S.T.B.)

It is easier for you Americans to arrange such things… You all speak the same language, there are no borders to cross and you can use the same currency and u can do this thing on a short notice while if we should try to do it here in Europe in, say Vienna cause its pretty much smack in the middle, it would mean probably at least a month of planning… And then some cause I think that the French would want it somewhere closer, the Germans as well, Italians in Rome on the pain of death and the British would probably have a hissing fit if it was arranged outside of GB.. I think I am developing a migraine just thinking about it :/

I also just wanted to let you guys know that I went to the HBO Store yesterday, and it was BEYOND AWESOME. It’s pretty small, but for the size of the store, they have a good amount of props. A friend, also a GoT fan, and I went and we were like children in a giant candy store. The security guard was kind of laughing at us, and he said we were the most enthusiastic people he had seen yet. One of the employees came up and started talking to us and then took us around the store to point out what all the artifacts were. We were so excited and vocal about it that all the other store employees at some point came over to talk to us (or see if we were crazy). I think we impressed them with our knowledge and fangirlish enthusiasm. :)

One guy told us to come back in April when they’ll have more merchandise and some sort of promotional “get this if you buy X amount of merchandise” campaign. And I bought a House Stark shirt, because despite any complaints about the design, I think the direwolf is awesome! Note for girls: They don’t have women’s shirts IN STORE yet, but will be getting them soon. They’re also going to be getting the beersteins. Probably the best part of the experience was that the employees were knowledgeable and spirited about the series. One guy even told us that while he’s excited for the show, he’s more hyped for ADwD.

The costumes were all magnificent. I’m not sure which my favorite prop was. Probably the dragon eggs, although the Hound’s helmet was pretty spectacular too. However, there was also something else very special: a musical instrument (mini harp – lyre?) that we were told belongs to Rhaegar! I asked one of the employees if he knew where the prop featured in the production, and while he didn’t know for sure, we just started talking about flashbacks!!

So after like 45 minutes my friend and I left and decided to walk around Times Square. And we stumbled upon a GIGANTIC billboard of Ned on the Iron Throne! We were still on our GoT high from the HBO Store, so it was perfect timing!

I created a flickr so you guys can see photos if you want: http://www.flickr.com/photos/61048127@N04/sets/72157626356641642/

Saw first 2 eps a few weeks ago, but can’t say more right now. Getting eps 1-6 this week and will be allowed to discuss.” Then he said about the acting -”The whole cast is great. The kids they cast are remarkable.” http://twitter.com/televisionary – this is the reviewers twitter account.

    Off topic post RE: Merchandise:

Anyways, has everyone seen those new beer steins? What do you think? I am upset that they cost $40 each, because I think I’m gonna buy 3 or 4 of them and the cost will be outrageous! But I can’t help it, they are so cool, and I will get lots of use out of them. For me, I think these are much better than t-shirts. If only they were about half the price… :(

I wasn’t sure if I’d spend much on merchandise, but I already bought the tie-in trade paperback last week, and it looks like I’m going to drop a bunch of money on these steins. Add the price of the eventual DVD set, and I guess I will have contributed my share to HBO. Makes me feel less guilty about not being a subscriber.

    Inkasrain,

Thanks, I do remember a 15% and 20% discount recently. Maybe I’ll keep my eye open for one of those.

I NEED to drink beer out of a Baratheon, Stark, or Lannister mug! Especially while watching the show. :)

Eunice, haha! By the looks of it, it may be hard for us all to congregate at the truck. Depending on what time everyone shows up, we will probably be spread throughout the line. We have a designated meeting place for after you get your food though, I will send you the email about it.
