Apparently the preview that actually aired on HBO was slightly different from “The Game Begins.” Only slightly, yes, but…
Those few, quick shots we did not get to see online depict a more amorous portion of the tale.
Ran at Westeros tweeted: Six new images from “The Game Begins” #GameOfThrones trailer in our gallery, 3 shown only on HBO (mildly NSFW).
Following the break are the three new screencaps. No blatant nudity, but they are slightly NSFW (that means Not Safe For Work, kiddies), depending on where you work and how much of a dill weed your boss is. Credit Westeros reader Gustavo, who sent them to Ran.
This first picture is from the wedding night of Dany (Emilia Clarke) and Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa). WiC and FaB saw this scene during the 15-minute preview that was shown the night before the TCA’s, and it depicts Dany crying, trembling in fear as Drogo is about to bend her over to take her in the “traditional” Dothraki fashion (which is not quite the way it happens in the book). The preview cut away as he bent her over, so it’s unknown whether or not they actually consummated the marriage that way. Emilia plays the role of frightened doe frighteningly well.
Here we see Daenerys and Drogo in a tender moment amidst the furs of what is likely Dany’s tent (though it could also be Drogo’s); Dany has just told him she is carrying his son in the Dothraki tongue. He asks her how she knows it is a son. She just smiles softly and kisses him.
Couple’a good bodies there! I have a feeling Viserys will not be telling Khaleesi she needs bigger breasts.
Speaking of Viserys (Harry Lloyd) … I guess we’re being shown why he so emphatically vouched for the pillow skills of Doreah (Roxanne McKee).
Fire And Blood: An image is worth a thousand words. I got nothin’.

The pictures don’t show for me, and clicking on them leads to an erronous page on westeros.org… I found them there though: http://www.westeros.org/GoT/Gallery/
I’m actually at work at the moment so maybe it’s better the images didn’t show automatically :-)

Well, I never really worried about HBO being shy with the steaminess of the books, but it’s good to see photo evidence of full commitment. :)

Showing Dany/Drogo in a “nice” sexy scene kinda ruins the whole sort of rape-scene, where we’re initially supposed to think that Dany needs to get away from this guy and the marriage. Not a big deal, but i’m mildy unpleased by this spoiler.
sjweningsQuote Reply
sjwenings,
This screencap might be from the later part of the book though, where they both enjoy their time in bed.
Johan SporreQuote Reply
On a more positive note, i guess showing some sex is good for dragging in the horny HBOers. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Dany. She looks so… soft and nice.
sjweningsQuote Reply
Johan Sporre,
Uh… yes. Don’t get your point.
sjweningsQuote Reply
Ummm, is there any video from which those screen caps are made of?
ArdaenQuote Reply
sjwenings,
What don’t you get? Johan is right. Later on Dany begins to really enjoy her time with Drago, Johan is saying the screencap may be from that portion of the book, so the scene you’re talking about may not necessarily be left out.
Besides which, your interpenetration is flawed. It wasn’t a ‘rape’ scene. It was first-time jitters, and I recall Dany eventually enjoying that as well.
YadadadaQuote Reply
I noticed this on the preview Saturday night. I also noticed (on a larger screen) that the Others are slightly translucent which makes me happy.
dizzy_34Quote Reply
Yadadada,
Again – i know. I wasn’t saying anything about anything being left out.
But as the people not having read the books watch the sort of rape scene as i still like to call it (since she clearly did not want to in the books – initially) they are supposed to think that she might get away from this aweful brute, but having already seen them in a loving scene in this trailer, they know how it all will end up – hence – spoiler.
sjweningsQuote Reply
sjwenings,
It sounded like you were displeased that they show Dany and Drogo having a good time together, and I merely pointed out that if this screencap is from the later part of the book/series it’s in perfect accordance with how it’s described in the book (from the night Dany became pregnant and onwards she seemed to enjoy her nights with Drogo).
It may very well be (and seems like from Dany’s expression when Drogo touches her the first time) that their first night together will be a bit hard to watch.
Johan SporreQuote Reply
Johan Sporre,
He wasn’t complaining about the inclusion of that scene in the show, but in the preview – as it shows that the two characters move past the ‘rape’ stage and on to the ‘love’ stage – so that new viewers will not be as affected by the ‘rape’ scene, knowing that everything works out between them later.

Aha, okay. Valid point.
Johan SporreQuote Reply
Ha ha, it may only be my interpretation of the shot, but it seems to me in this screen cap this Viserys is bored and looking for something to complain about. The Dragon is always so damned restless! He needs to do more to support the bottom, I think.
And I am SO glad we have such a soft, beautiful, curvy Dany. Hurray at the trend towards real women, and not stick thin skeletons with plastic implants! We will ALWAYS support her lovely bottom!
I am really liking the visual contrast between pale, white haired Dany and dark skinned and dark haired Khal. It’s striking and beautiful.
Gosh guys we are ALMOST within the 30 day mark on the countdown clock.. I can’t believe it!!
purplejillyQuote Reply
Is Emilia Clarke 18? I’m wondering how far they’d be allowed to go with her. It looks like they’re not shying away from Dany’s sex scenes.
A Man GrownQuote Reply
I need a cold shower.
For that first ‘love scene’, I hope Khal speaks to her in Dothraki and that we don’t get a translation. Adds another layer to the ‘overwhelm’ – we are with Dany because we have NO IDEA what the hell the massive guy with the massive stiffie is saying either. Is he being kind, or perverse, or threatening? But we, like Dany, know what he’s not telling her to make dinner. *le shudder*
Poor girl.
Thankfully she gets ‘over’ it by the next still.
Franny BeeQuote Reply
A Man Grown,
Emilia is over 20 at least. 22-23 by my recollection.
Johan SporreQuote Reply
Hmm… I’ll be a bit disappointed if they’ve drastically changed that first, wedding day consummation from the book. What struck me as so surprising and well, sweet in the book was that you EXPECT him to just bend a crying Dany over, but instead, he shows concern for her and slowly, gently coaxes her into it. Let’s hope they keep some of that…

These are great shots. I hope Richard Lawson of Gawker, who seems to think that this series won’t have the requisite amount of sex or gore (wtf?) for HBO sees these. And Emelia Clarke=Gorgeous.

purplejilly,
Completely agree about Viserys! I can see him just flying off the handle any moment after that screenshot!
Emilia Clarke is so lovely. I am so happy she is our Dany. She has a very natural, ethereal beauty that just makes her perfect for the role. And Jason Momoa looks good too. :) They are a beautiful couple.
I can’t figure out if, in the first screenshot, if Dany looks like she is about to cry or smile. She looks calm to me. But it could definitely still be her wedding night. It looks to me like a, “I am the blood of the dragon” moment.

Lady,
Not to argue or anything, just wanted to point out that the shot with Dany and Drogo laying in bed lasts for less than a second and there is no way people who haven’t read the books are going to know what is going on there. I wouldn’t worry about it.
ChrisQuote Reply
Exactly what I was thinking. Non-readers aren’t going through these trailers with a fine comb, looking at split second shots like we are.
Ryan EQuote Reply
I agree with you there- it seems like everyone forgot that Dany’s FIRST night was actually not bad. He kept asking her “No?” “No?” as he proceeded with the foreplay and in the end she whispers “YES” as she demonstrates her desire by… well you all read it… the close to rape stuff came after that as he took her from behind. The very FIRST night though he was surprisingly tender.
AuroraQuote Reply
I wish the wedding consummation scene played out like in the book instead of like a rape… In the book I expected Drogo to be a scary, evil guy, but after that scene,
I was pleasantly surprised and ended up genuinely liking the guy for the rest of the book.
sareetaQuote Reply
Jenn Rose,
I assume they’ll keep it mostly like in the books. As he undresses her in the trailer we saw, and in this picture about to bend her over, he does not see her face. I imagine the silent crying did nok begin until he got behind her. Probably she’ll let go a sob or something, and he’ll become aware of her “situation”, and then we’ll have the whole “no” thingy.
It’s in the script. (Though we don’t know what they might have changed for sure)
sjweningsQuote Reply
+1 to some commentators probably slightly misremembering the Dany/Drogo wedding night, which was actually surprisingly tender. The subsequent nights, not so much.
I think complaining about the “spoiler” of a few frames of preview is just looking for something to complain about, but that’s just me.
Ser_GQuote Reply
I dunno, while there was some tenderness from him and acceptance from her, you still have to consider:
She was 12ish. He was an enormous brute.
She was very abusively pursuaded into it by her psychotic brother.
No matter how much tenderness he showed, he eventually did bend her over and do her Dothraki style.
That, plus her seeing Dothraki women getting raped, guys getting gutted, nipples getting tweaked, etc… I wouldn’t say that people are misremembering it when they don’t see it as a good experience for her.
ChrisQuote Reply
talking about women in gerneral, i second that. but it is actually not how dany is described in the books.
ofc u cant cast an underage for that role, but a very skinny woman would fit the role better.
having said that: emilia seems to be a great choice anyways and i am looking forward to see her on screen.
BeneQuote Reply
This is the first thing that has disappointed me badly about the coming series! A Game of Thrones closely follows the stories of 8 main characters. To have any scene that doesn’t involve at least one of them, like the Viserys one above (I don’t imagine Dany would be around!), means you’re kind of (in a way) missing the essence of the story, which is following the story of Daenerys. What Viserys does in his spare time is completely neither here nor there. Whilst I realise it’s difficult to convey Dany’s thoughts through television, or to develop Viserys’ character in our minds, it’s Dany’s story really. I’ll wait until I see the series, but I want the story to follow the story of these characters, what goes on around them is secondary. I think that that is an important part of the appeal of the books for me, over say an omnipotent narrator.
Khal NicQuote Reply
Khal Nic,
But we don’t really know the context of the Viserys’ scene. Maybe the idea was for Daenerys to watch two people having sex in preparation for her wedding. We don’t know how this fits in yet…
Dale RippkeQuote Reply
Chris,
But do we know that the first screencap is definitely from her wedding scene? I mean it looks the same as what I saw in the HBO trailer, but she and Drogo did get naked outside a lot.
LinaQuote Reply
Khal Nic,
as far as i remeber, viserys mentions that he has tried the “present” already.
so it is actually mentioned in the books.
BeneQuote Reply
Lina,
It looks like the same scene, with the red sunset in the background and everything. He is also wearing that blue ceremonial paint which I don’t think he wears every where.
ChrisQuote Reply
Wha?!?! Where do I go to subscribe to HBO?!?
shagnastyQuote Reply
Bene,
A Song of Ice and Fire uses third-person limited narrative (sort of) – limited because you are limited to the experiences of just one character and you don’t know any more than that character knows…
But I agree with Dale that we don’t know the context yet, sometimes you have to replace clunky dialogue with visual elements, but still. Seems a bit calculated, cheesy, contrived, whatever words you want to use :) if true… Not very George R.R. Martin at all!
Khal NicQuote Reply
Khal Nic,
i see your point. still: in this case, viserys trying the present istn something intreguing, something where the reader must ask himself “did he really do it or is he lying?”. its not about different POV characters playing their game against each other. it is just a fact he is telling to his sister. also it is not crutial for the story.
i dont bother if they make pictures out of such things for TV.
BeneQuote Reply
sjwenings,
I think it is a big deal, actually. In the book Dany is 14. In the series she looks about 20. I’m don’t this was the intention when they cast older actors in the series but it does have the effect of turning disturbing scenes into titillating ones.
Also, the sex in the books is only depicted when it’s relevant to the story. It looks like the series is trying to fulfill a quota or something.
DanQuote Reply
Dan,
Pretty much what I said, and I agree about the age thing, although it is a shame, if that is the price of them making the series at all, then so be it. Nothing could tarnish the books anyway, I feel.
I never read King’s Landing as a Mediterranean city. But then my copy of A Game of Thrones has a picture of Kings Landing on it, and guess what? It’s been there in front of me the whole time, and it’s quite sunny! I think the T.V. series will be as good as it can be.
