Winter-Is-Coming.net is proud (more or less) to present our first ever podcast, entitled the Winter-Is-Coming.net First Annual (Maybe? I Don’t Know) Podcast! Me, Hear Me Roar, and Fire And Blood got together about a week or so ago to record this mind-blowingly awesome podcast. Ok, it’s not so mind-blowing, it’s mostly just us three rambling about the books, the show and this site. But hopefully you guys find it interesting.
We hope to do one of these a year, prior to the start of each season, provided we get more seasons. Or maybe we’ll do two a year, one at the start of each season and one at the end? I don’t know. We shall see.
Anyway, listen in to hear as we talk for over 90 minutes about how we found out about the books and the series, the origins of the site, reminiscing about those early days, and what we are most looking forward to in this upcoming season. Hope you like it!

Wow, this is awesome! Can’t wait to listen to it in a bit.
You know what? I’m actually more thrilled about this than today’s new trailer. (Not that it wasn’t good, but still. 90-minute podcast featuring the Triumvirate of House Gatewatch? Now that’s what I call geek-gasm!)

Nice podcast guys. Still listening. Just heard you guys talk about not finding any other books to sink your teeth into. Have you read Scott Lynch’s Lies of Lock Lamora? I read this right after reading the Song of Ice and Fire books about 5 years ago and absolutely loved it. Of course it’s very different, but similar in the fact that the fantasy elements are not in your face. Magic exists but takes a bit of a back seat to the main plot line. Check it out if you haven’t yet. It’s hard to say which series is my favorite.

ddiaz,
I felt the need to sink my teeth into another meaty story after “finishing” asoiaf so far and first stumbled over Joe Abercrombie. His stories are also nice in terms of character developement, grittiness and foremost: humor :)
The books by Lynch are also a very nice read. Im highly antacipating his third addition to his world. It sure is a different kind of story, but here’s another fan that felt the same, it’s different but very compelling to me.

Are there spoilers in the podcast for people who haven’t read the books?

ddiaz, I read the first book, yes. I thought it was entertaining, but not nearly as deep as ASOIAF. I’ll eventually read the second book, although it seem Lynch is just as slow as Martin when it comes to writing new books, so not anxious to continue on just yet.
Brynn, I… have no idea.
Julian Budke, we tried to stay spoiler-free for those who haven’t yet read any of the books and only talk about things in a vague way. If you’ve read the first 3 books, you are definitely in the clear.

well to finish my commenting, it didn’t really seem long at all…I agree that I should get a reward though ;P
btw, an annual podcast really isn’t enough…there’s three of you, which can make it more interesting as the ones who (like mine) only have two, because there’s less quiet time. Yours felt like you knew where you were going, which is good, I think. There has to be some randomness but too much can sound weird…you could do episode reviews this way…
or maybe I should just somehow try to trick one of you into podcasting with me since I need guest-hosts/co-hosts :)

Hi,
is there someway to get this to work with I Devices?
Aside from ASOIAF with which I started around Christmas and am currently
in the Middle of SoS (Dotrice audiobooks) I have read a lot of “high fantasy”, especially
D&D stuff like Salvatore’s Drizzt, Dark Sun und Dragonlance in my youth.
Those books are fun and I reread some in recent years, but comparing them to
Martin is like comparing Star Wars to LOTR ( I Love both dearly except the prequels of course;))
BTW: It is quite funny that in my mind all the mayor characters and places
from season 1 resemble those from the series, because I started reading the Books
After watching the first trailers;)

Am I the only one that actually liked a Feast for Crows? Sure it “reset” things a bit and sets things up again, which needs to happen. But I thought it was a great breath of fresh air in a region that we never dove into before “Dorn”. I thought the book was great and hope the 2nd half of Dance brings it back. The only think that is confusing to me in Feast is Arya and whats happening to her. She seems to be sent everywhere and is becoming some assassin ninja or something.
Great Podcast guys

I like AFFC. At first I was disappointed that I didn’t get chapters from some of my favourite POVs, but storywise it was great.
GaRQuote Reply
Beggining to listening to it, non English-born but I think I am following it well. You are the first English podcast I listen to, so you can be proud XD. BTW, I also liked A Feast For Crows… I think, I’ve only read it 1 time, and almost forgot it XD
MarkcbQuote Reply
Jeff T.,
My dad loved Feast, he actually commented to me whilst he read it that he thought Martin’s prose was stronger in it than before (though he obviously loved it before). I think in the end what you feel for Feast is largely dependent on your love for reading descriptions. Martin’s descriptions in that book are lovely and detailed but they are also long. So if you love reading the florid descriptions then despite the lack of action comparable to Storm, Feast is great. If you find it wearying and are more action oriented than i imagine you find Feast a bit of a slog.
Personally i didn’t mind reading about the Iron Isles and Dorne (actually really enjoyed that stuff) and I love Jaime, but Cersei’s chapters i found boring and while i still loved the book that is enough to put it as number 4 on my list of favorite SOIF books.

Grats. It’s like a precious steaming long black log, and no way to flush it.
Fat Sword of DoomQuote Reply
Some random thoughts I had while listening.
Official pronunciation of Theon is THEE-on.
Agreed. POV Cersei chapters were key in AFFC.
Agreed. Re-reading the books is important.
Agreed. I want to know every casting piece of news.
Agreed. The WiC.net guys should be on talk shows.
I never “followed” a book to the screen before. Not like this. I’m interested in the David Fincher-directed production of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series (now listed as a 2011 film) and have checked in on it at imdb.com from time to time, but it’s nothing like this. I’m also reading David McCullough’s 1776 which, I believe, HBO has picked up as a mini-series. But, there’s not much on it yet.
The fact that the GOT actors check in on WiC.net is way cool.
The term “really, posh accent” for Tyrion in his “public persona” and the concept that Dinklage is playing Tyrion like he (Tyrion) puts on “performances” for various situations and audiences is an analysis that borders on genius.
Daenery’s nude: [ ] creeped out [X] can’t wait to see
Can’t wait scene from first season:
Gunthor: How would you like to die, Tyrion son of Tywin?
Tyrion: In my own bed, with a belly full of wine and a maiden’s mouth around my cock, at the age of eighty.
GOT: Tyrion VI.
The adjective for “trepidation” is “trepidatious”.
After on hour, the WiC.net guys needed some coffee.
I like the idea of having a transparent map appear over a CGI topographical representation of Westeros between scenes and a zoom through the map into the next scene.
I’m such an Arya fan I’m embarrassed for myself.
Boardwalk Empire’s problem is that it was not written by Mr. Martin.
After an hour and a half, the WiC.net guys needed to go to bed.
Mike ChairQuote Reply
Mratfink,
Your dad has good taste :)
Agreed. I do like Martins vivid descriptions of some of the exotic places. Don’t get me wrong I am a guy and am all about action scenes, but somehow George has such a amazing writing style that all the other stuff is so interesting too. Like most people have done like me, I cannot find a author that can match. Believe me I have tried all suggestions. All falls short.
I think most people gave AFFC a not as hot viewpoint for two reasons:
1) Tyrion wasn’t there
2) Storm of Swords was such a huge peak with everything hitting the fan and AFFC cooled off a bit.
But thats ok. Its ramping up again this July! Cannot wait. Will certainly be following this path now through July:
1)Read Game of Thrones a second time (Already done last fall)
2)Watch Game of Thrones all the way through on HBO
3) Read COK, SOS, and AFFC after HBO just before July 12th
4) Read Dance with Dragons for the first time!
Its a good year for this series in every way.

Great to put voices to the, er, posts! If I hadn’t stumbled across this site so many turns ago, I doubt I’d have ever become this excited for the series. (& I’m unable to explain what I mean by “this excited” but I’m sure you get the pic!) :L

That was nice to listen to. I especially liked to hear about how you all first started reading ASoIaF, how the website started and how you all heard about the series for the first time and reacted to it – brought back fond memories of me jumping around in front of the computer after having read some of George’s posts on Not-a-Blog.
I’d really appreciate it to hear weekly podcasts of each episode if you can find the time. Doesn’t have to be that long – 30 minutes would be great.

Fire And Blood,
At first I had trouble remembering which of you and Winter was which, but as the podcast went on it became clearer and clearer.
Johan SporreQuote Reply
Do you plan on doing a weekly podcast once the series starts (eep, it’s so close!) where you do a recap/review of the episode? I think it’d be fun to hear your take on the episode. Also, maybe a recap of the top GoT news stories?
Anyway, here’s what I’m very excited to see in season 1 besides the ones already mentioned:
-the Stark kids
-Jon Snow (mmm)
-the handling of the prophecies
-wolf dreams
PS: I really liked A Feast forCrows. Asha, Brienne, and Arianne’s chapters were great to read, Victarion as well, and I’ve always been a fan of Davos. I just really missed the Jon and Dany chapters and was irritated to still not know what was going on w/ Rickon and Osha.

Things I liked about the podcast:
– I feel as though all three of the podcasters (???) were very enthusiastic about their podcasting and about the series.
- The sense of humour found on the site translated surprisingly well to the podcast medium.
- The discussion of their reaction to the books.
Things I did not like:
- I feel as though some of the podcasters are not embodying their roles as much as they could be and are holding back a bit too much.
-Although I am not physically able to see them, my psychic powers lead me to suspect that their eyebrows aren’t matching well with their terrible wigs. Also, WiC’s chair looks too modern and out of place next to the chairs of his companions.
-As Tywin’s Bastard pointed out, there is not nearly enough about the fascinating topic that is me.

What I liked about the podcast
On this March the 23rd, 2011
by Sam
First of all, everyone seemed very excited on the highway. Then I went home and turned on the computer. I pressed play on the button and instantly felt something… anticipation? The audio was positively coming through the speakers at first, especially before I turned it down. People were talking; I believe two men, then three, and perhaps a bugger even though they usually come out in October and we are only two days into Spring.
Secondly, I liked how the audio recording interview-conversation was about the books by George R R Martin. And about a television show. I like television, I like it a lot. I love Doctor Who.
I liked listening to people talking about books. That’s always good. I like books and I like talking bout books generally. And I like talking about George RR Martin books. I like those books, y’know? I can’t get through them though. My nephews told me they’re good. But you know what? I can’t get through them. I also heard Dan Brown books are good.
Now my sitting of the digital audio recording was not all roses and baby powder. There were also some bad parts. Like the beginning.
I was like.. when will the beginning end? Before the intros, even. it just kept going. And then during the intro, I couldn’t hear much because I turned down the speakers, and basically I couldn’t hear anyone. Maybe you should get better mikes.
Also, all the talking was a lot. There was a lot of talking, about things, about this and that, I couldn’t really focus what it was about. Well, it was a lot of it. I was hoping for a new clip or trailer.
I hope you keep this up. I’ll looking forward to the next installment!

I was really excited that you guys did this. I listened to the whole 90 min and was not at all b0red. Loved hearing you guys discuss the books and show. I too would love to hear you discuss each episode as they air. I think it would be interesting to get a conversation between you guys about what you think rather than just a written review. Don’t get me wrong I would also love to read your take on each episode, but you can’t get a back and forth interaction that way. So I don’t know if it would take too much time to do a podcast every week, but it would be awesome.

Well, I was late getting to it, but I’m listening now and I’m about halfway through. It’s cool hearing you guys talk about how you discovered the books. Everyone seems to have their own little story, and a moment where they realized just how amazing the series is!
I’ve read the books 3 times, first back in 2001. When I discovered them, it was through online recommendations. Five years later, I managed to get one friend to read them, and I thought that was very cool. Now, I suddenly have 5 more friends reading them and I get to discuss the books all the time. One friend in particular is halfway through Book 2, and is totally obsessed. It’s very amusing to me!
Well, I’m gonna return to listening. PS, Marko has a cool accent. I also love how modest Europeans are about their ability to speak multiple languages. Most people I know can only speak one (English), but Marko humbly says “Oh, not that many. I’m only fluent in about three.”
