Say it with me: “So, Game of Thrones is tomorrow…”
Man, that sounds good. Too good to be true. Tomorrow. Tomorrow! I love ya, tomorrow! (You’re alwaaaaaaaaaaaays a daaaaaaaaay aaaaaaaaawaaaaaaaay!)
(I digress. As ever.)
Quick Hits!
In response to the infamous and unenlightened review by New York Times columnist Ginia Bellafante, George R. R. Martin has responded with his own views on his Not A Blog:
if I am writing “boy fiction,” who are all those boys with breasts who keep turning up by the hundreds at my signings and readings?”
George expressed his thanks to the many responses Bellafante’s review garnered, especially to the horde of “Geek Girls” (like this one by Amy Ratcliffe, and this one by Geek Girl Diva, and this one by Jennings Roth Cornet, and even this one by straight-to-the-point @Llywellyn on Twitter) who took to the WorldWeirdWeb in righteous response. George said:
thank you, geek girls! I love you all.”
In a related topic (aren’t they all?) Daniel Abraham of Orbit Books wrote a succinct yet thoughtful piece called Reviewing the Reviewers. Check it out!
Collider interviewed David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. You have to wonder how the boys are holding up with only one day to go. They still seem brimming with energy and enthusiasm! There are far too many choice quotes here to isolate even a few. This is a really good read.
Another good read are the four interviews Richard Edwards of SFX (UK) conducted. Featured are Mark Addy, Jason Momoa, Harry Lloyd, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
Jason Momoa was recently photographed for Vogue Magazine. Yes, Vogue Magazine. (It probably surprised him too.) But damn if that’s not one fine looking man.
Let rumor be truth! Hollywood Spy reports season 2 is a go! Of course it’s … frickin’ … Hollywood Spy. And they basically just take rumors they’ve heard in other sources and (sometimes) report them as truths. No confirmation as yet. (But it’s a good bet.)
Lastly, I always like tea with my Wertzone Breakfast! Here, Adam Whitehead gives his brief impressions (more to come) on the first two episodes, viewed by him at the BAFTAs.
Fire And Blood: I mentioned we have one day to go, right? There’s really not much more to say… other than to thank the fans and readers we here at Winter-Is-Coming.net have garnered over the last few years. Whether old or new… you’ve been the best. You’ve supported the bottom at every opportunity. We’re entering a brand new era now. We’re going to see an influx of people (and I will personally ensure it by name-dropping our asses at any inappropriate moment), possibly a whole flood after tomorrow, but more likely a trickle that will grow exponentially (and badassily) as the season wears on.
Treat the n00bs with kindness, patience, and with spoilers in mind. There’s a reason D&D say A Song of Ice and Fire has some of the most intelligent fans on the earth: it’s pretty much true. Tweenyboppers we are not. Hold your heads high, scions of House Gatewatch, and remember, fantasy nerds—you’re pretty freaking cool in our eyes. We couldn’t have done it without you.
Now let’s do this thing for real!
Edit: One more response from Matt Marquez at …ology. WiC even gets a mention! Thanks, brah!

Love GRRM’s response to Ginia Bellafante, and the general outraged response her article has received across the internet. Besides bringing up important issues for the fantasy genre, the backlash has only heightened interest in GOT! (Same with the LOST feud).
ONLY ONE MORE DAY! Thinking back over the last two years, it truly felt like this moment would never come…
Thanks, WiC! You made the waiting (the “Long Winter”) so much more enjoyable!

Speaking of Jason Momoa, I realized (several years after the fact) that I once met him in real life!
I used to work in a public market, where celebrities were often sighted (I also actually met and spoke with Ian McKellen there, one of the highlights of my life!). One day, Lisa Bonnet came by to do some shopping. All I could think was “Wow, it’s Lisa Bonnet from the Cosby Show! And some crazy-looking, tall, dreadlocked boyfriend…”
Little did I know, I was looking at the future Khal Drogo/Conan the Barbarian.

Monday-night SF/F on Sky. It’s been a while. Brings me back to the years of uninterrupted Star Trek with DS9 and Voyager alternating when I was a teenager. I got my dad hooked on Star Trek; in return, he got me hooked on the combination of popcorn and white wine.
Good times. I’d invite him over but he’s busy planning his wedding.

I’d like to thank the admins as well. I’ve loved Westeros.org for years, but its been nice to have a site dedicated to the TV adaption.
I unfortunately have to work night-shift during the premier tomorrow night so the boards will be full of comments by the time I’ve seen the first episode. I do hope that people are very careful about what they say over the next few weeks given the injection of people who’ve never read the books before. I really hope most can refrain from pushing the boundaries too, say as dumb comments like ‘Ned was really losing his mind on last night’s episode, I hope in the future he can keep his head’ . So called inside jokes and hinting at things to come are just dickish, and I know most people will restrain themselves, but there’s always a few that have to try and ruin the party.

just a quick update on the GoT Metacritic score. it currently stands at 82/100 with 19 reviews included.
i looked at the list of reviewers/sources that Metacritic includes/sanctions as part of their scores for TV shows and from what i can find there are 7 reviews from sources that are included on their official list that have yet to be entered and tallied. it is a mixed bag so i am not sure how much the score will go up or down:
Chicago Sun-Times; Paige Wiser (3.5/4) = 88
NY Daily News; David Hinckley (mixed review) = ????
NY Magazine; Adam Pasick (fairly positive) = ???
Pittsburgh Post Gazette; Rob Owen (fairly positive) = ????
Slant Magazine; Phillip Maciak (2.5/4) = 63 (the review seems pretty positive, says it is the “best” of the new costume dramas – Borgias/Camelot/Spartacus – but the 2.5/4 stars doesn’t translate to a very good Metacritic score according to their FAQ. i’ve emailed him to see if he might want to re-adjust his score.)
Slate.com; Troy Patterson (vile negative review) = ????
Zap2It; John Crook (very positive) = ????
and yes, i did email this list with appropriate links to Metacritic and ask them if/when they would include this in their official GoT Metacritic score. obviously i am a huge nerd with too much free time … ;)

Wow, that D & D interview really is a good read. And long.
Interesting bits:
-They seem excited about the bigger dire wolves in future seasons (though still no hint on how they’ll do it)
-It seems at least one actor (maybe more) was unhappy to learn that their character is not around for long, and that maybe some characters will stick around longer on the show. To be honest, I really hope not.

A review from a user on dragonmount:
http://www.dragonmount.com/forums/topic/53712-game-of-thrones/page__st__80
The conclusion?
Overall, it’s good. Not outstandingly brilliant from the off, but some excellent moments and assured performances overcome the problems. It’s interesting to reflect that by the end of Episode 2 many of the book’s more iconic characters (Barristan Selmy, Littlefinger, Varys, Alliser Thorne, Samwell Tarly etc) haven’t even shown up yet, so there’s plenty left to look forward to.
Go to the bottom of the thread (fifth page).

It’s hard to say why, but whenever GRRM expresses his opinion, he manages to say so much with so little words that I could see myself becoming a follower of his sect in case he ever were to start one. But wait, let’s reflect on a few things:
1) we have all given him our money to read his fictuous writings
2) in many ways, these Writings have become fundamental in our lives, especially these past years
3) we form a tight community that will defend GRRM’s faultless work relentlessly, every single day, from the moment we wake up till the minute we go to sleep
So yes, it’s probably safe to say that we ARE allready members of his sect… :-)
Let me say those Holy Words one more time: WINTER IS COMING! For after tomorrow, Winter will be here, and Life as we know it will have changed forever!

I’ve only ever commented on here when there was a bad thing mentioned about the show. In other words I’ve only commented once, when I found out Sky had bought the rights to HBO in the UK.
I would say that a bad review is a bad thing about the show, apart from the fact that the review linked here is so narrow-minded that everyone other than a few like-minded individuals must think it ridiculous and snobbish nonsense.
It’s a shame that some people still just can’t accept Fantasy, even stuff like GOT, which is just so incredibly written.
In any case, thank you WiC and fellows for such a fantastic blog, hope the news carries on for many many years to come!

We come from all sorts of Nationalities , political persuasions, genders , ages ,orientations..( I’m not so much a geek girl as a geek granny myself )..and while her review was notably condescending to women , it was hardly less so to men and, in fact , to anyone who has ever enjoyed a work in a fantasy genre ( which might include The Tempest and A Midsummer’s Night Dream , as well).
Long may her bottom , unsupported , sag

Right, because anyone with breasts is automatically not a guy. I’m sure the trans dudes really appreciate that. Especially the ones who already have dysphoria and can’t afford top surgery.

Just wanted to thank the WiC crew for making the long wait for the show so enjoyable. Winter has finally come!! Can’t wait for the premier tomorrow! :D

It’s like Christmas’ Eve with a big gift still wrapped up.
I can’t wait to open it, but I know that afterward, even if it’s the perfect gift, I will feel a little sad.
I will also add my thanks to all who work on this site. It’s great to have all this info and interesting discussions in a same place.
(I fear several thousand comments next time I come, after the 1st episode, judging by the number of comments on a mere 10 min extract)

I really don’t appreciate this site or anyone who posts here. It’s made my life a horrible series of waiting periods, when I was unable to be on the site joining in the fun. The endless lively discussion about every piece of minutia that would fall from above has made the wait impossible to ignore. Every day I wake up and have to remember how many days more I will have to wait. It’s exhausting. And we don’t just get a post with some news and a few comments, we continue to comment for days after an item has been posted, meaning I can’t forget to check every thread on the front page. I have a life I need to be living! When I go away from my computer my phone has to alert me every time there is a new post! It never seems to end!
I’ve read more words on this site than I have of ASoIAF. That statistic alone is just scary.
In fact, I don’t think I was even really into GoT before this site. I can’t remember if I had read the book yet when this site first began. I knew the book was popular and had it sitting around waiting to be read.
So thanks. Thanks for ruining my life everyone. All of you commenters. Yeah, it’s your fault. Fire and Blood, hear me Roar? Your fault too. But most of all, it’s Winter’s fault. So thanks.
Seriously, it’s been fun! Most fun anticipation I’ve ever seen. And it looks like the final product was worth it. Love you guys!

I’ve also been lurking more than commenting, but checking this site for news has become a habit. Thank you guys, I feel the same as most commentors above me.
And thank you, GRRM, for the response. There some people who always will think they’re above all Others…
Don’t let the coming trolls provoke you or any backlash that might happen. :-)

Just one more lurker poking her head out to echo everyone else in thanking the admins – and also all of you brilliant and entertaining posters without whose endless enthusiasm I might’ve been forced to do something useful and productive during the last few days and weeks…
Been coming here sporadically since christmas -08, but lately not a day has passed without a visit – or three. Even while not commenting much at all, I might still be obsessed.
Also, oh, I hear there’s this new series starting in a couple of hours, so that’s kind of exciting as well.

I also have to thank WiC, FaB and HmR for their tireless efforts to make this site fun and informative. From West Coast to East Coast to Western Europe, you guys gave us all you have, create and nurture this wonderful community of worldwide fans of HBO’s adaptation of ASoFaI .
I am sure in the years to come, all the Knights and Ladies of House GateWatch will keep this site fun and insightful. Thank you for all your hardwork.

Today is the day!
I can not believe it is finally here.
Thankfully to HBO Adria I will sleep like a baby tonight, unlike all these numerous Sundays before the release of trailers, teasers, pics..etc.
It has been a ride, and what a ride!
From the day I discovered this blog (probably a day after it was actually launched).
Guys you did a great job!
Sending my love to every commenter, lurker and troll!
Luv ya all :)
p.s. I am on AGOT-days off: Waiting for S2 green-light to start “working” again in the vast space of the web ;)

It’s surreal, watching the countdown showing less than a day to the premiere. I remember the posts on GRRMs blog telling the fandom not to develop false hope when HBO just bought the rights to the books …
Thanks to WiC and the crew of this wonderful blog and may we all start the casting discussions and the actively look for the -gates when the 2nd season is announced, which by all accounts should be real soon.

To add in my thanks to the rest: WiC, HMR, FaB – you have done an amazing job and have managed to build a big community around this series. Further more, you have created a voice that is actually heard and listened to in the media as well as by the developers of the series themselves.
I cannot say that I have been here from day one, but I have been here long enough. Since the first time I thought that I needed to point out the VFX reel for John Adams to calm the CGI nay-sayers, I have tried to come out of my lurkerly shell every once in a while to comment on the aspects that I think need commenting or pointing out. I will try to continue this trend with all the upcoming seasons for years to come.
So, keep it up and get even better (although I don’t know what stops you still can pull to make the experience even more awesome)!

Thanks to WiC, HmR and Fabihoff for a wonderful site and keeping us up to date with going ons surrounding GoT. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I’ve been around since a certain actor was cast, so my bad that I hadn’t read the books before, but after I read a few things here about it I purchased the book and I LOVED IT! (and it’s the genre I like reading too! Seriously my bad!) I’ve read the second book and am back reading the first again for the series.
So here’s to many more years for WiCnet!
Knurk,
Knurk, a friend of mine in the Netherlands saw the ad for GoT and is absolutely going to watch too, she was blown away by it. She hasn’t read the book. I told her she must!
Hee hee…. me too!
So every one, every where…. Enjoy the GoT premiere!!!
(I just have to work out when I can watch it being in Ozland!).
Winter IS coming!

Something worth mentioning with regards to the NY Times article – they also published this about GoT, which I thought was a really excellent opinion piece, not only about Thrones but about fantasy in general on television. Made for a great read (even if I disagree slightly with the author’s views on nihilism in Fantasy) and gives a far more balanced opinion about the series than Bellafonte’s review. I recommend you check it out! :)

So I’m a bad mother. my 8 yr old just watched the first 15 minutes twice, and now already knows which parts to cover her eyes at. She feels quite bad for Will, who no one believes. She feels bad for Bran, who had to watch while she closed her eyes (LOL). On the plus side, my 23 yr old son who was not going to watch, saw the White Walkers and the blue eyed zombie girl and said “Cool! I’m in – call me at 9!”
And on an interesting note, my husband said he always thought they were the WIGHT walkers – as in WIGHT the creatures they create and not WHITE the color? What’s the official word on that??
