Latest trailer contains new footage and critics’ praise

Yes, the show is airing now, but HBO is still releasing trailers. The latest Game of Thrones trailer is 30 seconds of quick cuts from the series (including a bunch we haven’t seen yet) interspersed with quotes pulled from TV critics’ reviews of the show.

Winter Is Coming: An effective little trailer. Certainly one that could entice people on the fence about the show to check it out. Since it is 30 seconds long, I’m guessing HBO will air this on broadcast and other cable networks to attract new viewers.

  • Who is the dude drawing the sword after the Lannister guards approach Old Nan?

    He’s all like “NYAAHH!!”

Oh which reminds me..new Deathly Hallows trailer is up..I cried and jizzed at the same time!!!!!!!! :D

That’s Septa Mordane not Old Nan and Jon is the guy drawing the sword.

  • everytime I watch a new trailer (even now) I get goosebumps -.-
very nice done – somehow its still a little bit unreal to see all the charakters of the books finally coming to life

  • Winter Is Coming,

I already thought so, my guess was it would be in FaB’s earlier quick hits post. I watched the trailer, but now I’m joining the Brotherhood without Previews because I’m in a state that these previews can’t excite me anymore (whowouldathunkit?).

  • Saw this on another network last night. Thought it was the same one I’d been seeing for weeks but I guess not.

So glad to have the support of my fellow BwoP members! It also helps that I’m at work and the embedded video doesn’t even show up. Now, all we have to do is make it until Sunday, just a few more days. Hold steady guys, hold steady!

    ASTB!

  • A lot a teasers for the novel readers in there!!! Visarys yelling in front of Drogo could only be his “crowning” scene. Jon pulling his sword indoors is probably to fight the wights. Ice being drawn may have been for Ned’s sake

Who was in the Gods’ Wood with the figure approaching? It looked like Bran.

Why was Tyrion in front of Robb? That was Maester Luwin and Greywind with him, so it must be back at Winterfell.

  • Why was Tyrion in front of Robb? That was Maester Luwin and Greywind with him, so it must be back at Winterfell.

i think that is when he stops at winterfell after his trip to the wall

  • It’s good to see a preview with critics’ praise…might be a good additional pull for those who aren’t so sure about the genre/story.

  • jwsnasa: Why was Tyrion in front of Robb? That was Maester Luwin and Greywind with him, so it must be back at Winterfell.

    The saddle proposal, maybe.

Yes, I think it was Bran, and looked like Osha approaching him. I think I saw shackles around her ankles.

Also, as others have said, Tyrion stops by Winterfell on his way south, because Jon asked him to help Bran like he helped Jon. Tyrion teaches the folk at Winterfell to make a saddle for Bran so he can ride, crippled as he is.

  • Someone just asked this in another of today’s posts, but as a long-time lurker who must’ve missed something extraordinarily crucial, can someone give me an “Always Support the Bottom” tutorial? I’m on this site 1,000,000/day and I want to be able to write that and know what I’m saying. Help me!

  • Yeah me too….I have no idea as to what supporting the bottom means.

    HEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Team Sansa,

It’s rooted in a misunderstanding that arose during the first Maester’s Path challange. A few key fans got sent a box with some props including vials/flasks of liquids with smells representative of some of the locations in Westeros and abroad. Then the first Maester’s Path challange referred to those smells, and the fandom worked together to solve the puzzle, based on pictures of the box contents the lucky owners posted. One of the props was a map printed on what looked like old parchment, and on the back of it you could faintly make out a mirror image of the words “Always support the bottom”, which was suspected to be a hint for the puzzle, until the producers clarified that it was not so. Turned out it was merely an imprint from some heavy object that had been use to flatten the parchment or some such, the words meaning that the bottom of the heavy object should always be supported, so it wouldn’t fall out. It was such a funny misunderstanding though, that the makers of the Maesters Path actually referenced it in another one of the puzzles, where the words were included in a sentence in a letter supposedly written by some maester hundreds of years before the current events in the story.
The words have since been adopted as the “words of our House”, here at Winter is coming, for fun.

When the show was ramping up, HBO sent a Maester’s Box to Winter and other savvy folks. It had vials of scents and other cool stuff. The things in this box were clues to solve some of the puzzles that were sent out to view film clip rewards. While Winter was searching for clues, he saw something very faint on the bottom of the box. The letters looked to read Always support the Bottom. It became a running joke, even working its way into one of the game challenges. So Always support the Bottom became a rally cry of praise whenever someone posted.

It has to do with the Maester’s Path. In the packet first delivered for critics it seemed to be an inscription. Here some people thought it said “Always support the bottom”, but it didn’t.

BTW, in this trailer you can see Vaes Dothrak’s Door.

  • Just for clarification, next episode we get to see Loras, Renly, Littlefinger and Varys? Amiright???

Are there any other characters I might be missing??

  • I have not joined the Brotherhood without previews. I’d like to, but I don’t have the belly for it. Given a choice between castration, lifetime service on the Wall, or forswearing all GoT previews, it would be the knife for me.

These previews are the worst kind of drug. I don’t even enjoy them anymore, I just need them to survive.

Sorry for the dark tone, y’all. Having a not-so-stellar day at work.

  • I’ve been avoiding any clips and such, but this barely qualifies as a preview. It’s only 30 seconds and a lot of that is flashes of critics praise. The rest goes by so quick I don’t think it actually spoils anything. It does look awesome though and hopefully will convince a few people who are on the fence about watching.

You’re right, it’s probably not much new. But I’ve found that if I don’t watch the “Next on Game of Thrones” at the end of each episode, or any old trailers, new pics, or, really ANY IMAGES AT ALL, STILL OR MOVING, the episodes to come feel very fresh.

I wore myself out on the lead-up to episode one, and now I am trying to make up for it.

  • Team Sansa,

Yes, a watershed moment in the history of House Gatewatch.

The prior responses paint the picture accurately. I would just like to add and give credit to our very own poster, Tar Kidho, who, using advanced photo enhancing software, actually confirmed the phrase on the parchment was indeed, “Always Support the Bottom”. The resulting enhanced image is here.

The link to the entire post which, no doubt, will find its way into the Library of Congress someday, is here.

Finally, I reminisce that it was on that post that this poster changed his name from “Mike” to “Mike Chair” in a pledge of loyalty to House Gatewatch to “Always Support the Bottom.”

Ah, I remember it like it was a couple of months ago. Indeed it was!

Sorry for the dark tone, y’all.Having a not-so-stellar day at work.

McKee, I understand you! (Also the dark tone, aye. Bugger the world.) I’m the one who was making my own screencaps from previews because those at Westeros.org, though excellent, did not feature enough Barristan. :D

Also, previews are vital for marketing and publicity, so yay for previews!

But when I watched E1 I was so disappointed, and so scared that GOT might not be so good after all, that I swore all anticipations off. And indeed E2 made me much happier, even though I had seen several scenes already.

(Some were even deliberately misleading in the previews. Dany and Doreah’s “lesson” was sweet and funny, not a “let’s shock the audience” scene as the previews hinted at. Exactly like Giulia and Lucrezia’s kiss in “The Borgias”.)

So, to each his/her own, but I’m glad I’m not the only Brother (Sister?) Without Previews. This is my own way of supporting the bottom, after all!

  • Lex,

actually, i’m seriously thinking to join the BtW.
    (oh, i can’t believe i said it!)
but that’s just a trailer. 30 seconds. 10 seconds of critics quotes. 4 seconds of title.
only 15 seconds of clip. just think about it

  • I’m liking the Dany-as-Dothraki look. Dark eye makeup, bronzed skin and pulled-back platinum hair, definite improvment over the wide-eyed ingenue we’ve seen thus far.

  • EvilPicnic,

Think of the GoT episodes like a feast. Some people want to have a taste of the main course before hand, those of us who have joined the ranks of the BwoP have decided to wait so that the feast is fresh, new, and surprisingly tasty. *grin*

(Can you tell it’s almost dinner time? haha!)

  • An unrelated question to the topic of this thread. Do anybody know if the new “A dance with dragons”-book will be released with in a hardcover edition with the following look?

    http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Dragons-Book-Song-Fire/dp/0002247402/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1304023912&sr=1-1

I have this type of cover on my four other books, and the cover that’s outlined on amazon diverges quite a lot from this:

    http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Dragons-Song-Fire-Book/dp/0553801473/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1304023912&sr=1-1

I just don’t like this cover.

  • What’s up with the wide shot of the Dothraki trudging across the grass? That seems like an incredibly boring shot to include in an otherwise intense and fast trailer. And not a shot that anyone not already familiar with the show would even understand. If they had to include a wide, static shot, they should have replaced it with Jon’s first view of The Wall.

  • FromTheColdNorth,

Tywin probably won’t show up until episode 7, never trust IMDB!

Also about the cover, they ditched the green dragon (I’m sorry). You can read a lot of discussion about that in the newsthread of when the publication was announced. They’re going with the UK-style covers now, only that the UK-Dance-cover (with the sword) is used for the re-release of GoT and they use the Amazon-cover (is it a shield?) as the US-Dance-cover (are you following?).

    You can do it… the withdrawel… is… not… that… bad…

No! I will resist! And my bottom WILL be supported!

  • I absolutely refuse to join BwB. I will lap up every bit of GoT that I can possibly get my eyes? on and come back for seconds and thirds and fourths and….. This I promise the old gods and the new.

  • Bro: BwB

Okay, first it’s BwP (Brotherhood without Previews). I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you made a typo. Secondly, nothing stops the BwP from re-watching episodes once they air. That would be the BwR (Brotherhood without Reruns) which I don’t think exists. Although I’d give such an organization fair opportunity to state its case. Finally, BwP is a loving and understanding organization. You may join, leave, re-join and re-leave at any time. After all, we are not fascists. We’re a wholly owned subsidiary of House Gatewatch. Why not give it a try one week? You may like what you see.

  • Sam DeGree,

It reminds me of James Hibberd’s first recap: “Rickon Stark. He’s just six, and is sort of the Maggie Simpson of the Starks.”

  • I tried to remain faithful to the Brotherhood without Previews. I really did! But… I couldn’t help myself. Then it all flashed by so quickly that I was left with only one image stuck in my head and no way to understand it – Tyrion and another direwolf? Luckily, I could come here and have my question answered. It must indeed have been Tyrion at Winterfell on his way back south. I’d forgotten that scene. More Peter Dinklage is always a good thing. But my momentary confusion has reinforced in me the decision to return to the BwP fold.

And if W-i-C finds a good neurosurgeon for cheap, sign me up!

  • I know this is probably the wrong place to post this suggestion..
but we should start a petition for 12-13 episodes on season 2!
    Seriously!
This talk of 10 episodes is freaking me out!
Sure at the beginning to hook new viewers you want/need to edit the dialogue to get to the action and pivotal moments..
But you don’t need/want to do this as the story develops, or the story and characters will under-develop.
We are not talking about shooting in new locations or filming extra expensive battle scenes..
We are just talking about extra dialogue scenes between characters, surely the cast and crew who are already there can say/film a few extra lines/scenes!
It’s not going to significantly make much of a difference to the budget I wouldn’t think.

I am also hopeful that the dvd release will have extended footage versions of the episodes, but I’m not holding my breath.

Love the books.. and the show ;)

I, too, have succumbed. (Hangs head in shame). In my defense, I was busy and really just forgot. It was such a habit for the past few months…..

Fellow BwPe-ers, please forgive me? We have to take one day at a time and forgive ourselves if we fail. Tomorrow is another day. We can do it!

And enjoy each episode more for it.

  • Off topic, but Comcast subscribers…HBO GO is now available to us. Go to HBOGO.COM and choose XFINITY as your provider. You then sign in with your Comcast account and are good to go. Game of Thrones is there with interactive features or just watch the normal episodes.

  • TWP has the order of the spitball which is very similar to the BwP. Only no book reading either.

  • Winter, I think it’s time for you to add the explanation of what House Gatewatch is, how it came to be, and what our motto “Always Support The Bottom” means as a permanent link up in your ‘about’ section of the blog! Since this is bound to become an ever-growing part of Game of Thrones Lore..
It is known, and will be even more known in the future! :)

  • Bro,
I am a turncoat. I admire my Lords and Ladies of BwP, but I have not their strength, nor am I brave enough to go completely to the dark side amd immerse myself in HBOGO, so I limit myself to one peeking at a preview before new week, only one. See, it’s possible. I can smoke only one, and be satisfied, and then stop. *taps fingers nervously on the remote*
Yes, I only need one. *tap, tap, tap*
Oh WHERE is my time machine so I can pop to the future, grab my boxed set, and run back?
    *tap tap..*

  • I think I’m used to the old days, when a new trailer only came every few months…So after watching (and re-watching) each episode so far, I feel like I’m in for another long wait… then I suddenly remember there’s a new episode in a few days, and I get all excited! :)

  • Alcibiades,

I’m re-re-re-reading Clash right now, and I’m actually surprised by how much could be cut without hurting the main thrust of the story, or is taken up by description that could get across much more quickly visually. I might actually prefer that they keep it at 10 episodes and have some extra cash to throw at the Battle of the Blackwater.

  • Lex,
I feel guilty when I realize it’s almost the weekend again, and we get ANOTHER episode!!
Like I am cheating, somehow, by not having to wait another 75 days and watch the countdown clock to the next episode!

  • BTW I am not digging spray-tan Dany. She just looks dirty, like her handmaidens have forgotten that they need to bathe her and scrub her every now and then.
Like it USED to be ‘known’, but they’ve been drinking too much clotted mare’s milk lately, which I guess can cloud the best of the brains, and can especially cloud ones who think the moon is an egg.

  • Steven Swanson,

My thoughts exactly! Strange, because while reading clash I never think to myself “man this is slow”. Just as a show it could be fine without a lot of what goes on.

  • Ryan24 here making the jump and signing in with my facebook account. It feels weird posting without a picture.

Back on topic: So far I have avoided this preview. I hope my strength keeps up till Sunday.

It looks like Lex corrupted me.
OMG, i really don’t know why i’m doing this.

End of the story: i (reluctantly) pledge alliance to the brotherood without previews. Ok. Done. Fiùùùù. i said it.
    Goodnight everybody!

  • Elena Amici,

I’m not sure, but I think it may have been you who urged me to give in once before (the 14-minute preview, perhaps?). I usually resist for a while… but I’m weak. :)

  • To all of the in the BwP, who didn’t watch this clip…
I tell you. Watch it, and be not spoiled. Enjoy it, without guilt or fear for lesser enjoyment of the show. What we all did before leading up to the premiere can never be taken back…but the damage has been done, and this 30 seconds, with the only dialogue being one we’ve heard 700 times already, will do no further harm.

It’s a great 30 seconds that gets your heart racing.

  • I’m so not going to watch this. Last time I watched the three clips for the Kingsroad I which I hadn’t. We already “know” this show is fantastic, no need for confirmation about that anymore ;)

  • KG,

I’ve been meaning to ask…is there some way to get the women’s boy brief with the writing on the bottom instead of the front?

  • To be honest i watched the clip mostly to find out what was included for critical acclaim…and i found it impossible to read AND watch the really short shots in between, so i don’t think it spoils anything really

  • purplejilly:

Why? It sure as hell won’t work, i’ll tell you that right now.

And have you really considered what cuts could be made for Clash of kings? Maybe it’s not so bad when you think about it. And i don’t really get the impression that you have.

And have you really considered what cuts could be made for Clash of kings? Maybe it’s not so bad when you think about it. And i don’t really get the impression that you have.

What are u guys thinking on cutting? I just myself finished the re-reading ACOK but didn’t do it with the mind set on the show so didn’t really payed attention to what could be or could not be cut, I just assumed they would not cut much, as they haven’t on AGOT…I thought though that many many things were going on and that more episodes would be needed for sure.

But thinking about it yeah, lot of stuff happened off-focus, so not sure how they thinking to adapt that…but cutting things? I’m not sure is the route they will take (minor ofc, I’m referring to major stuff)

  • For example you can reduce all the Greyjoy stuff greatly (I hope they keep the Asha scene tought). The first 5 Bran chapters can also be condensed in a few scenes.

I hope we have a CoK script discussion soon, will be fun.

Why would they reduce the Greyjoy stuff? And specially the Asha scene, now that Asha has a POV in ADWD. Also, Alfie Allen has a very strong camera presence, so the more the better The Bran chapters I agree on, but well, that is minor stuff really, I mean that they will condense stuff its already accounted for ;-)

PS: With that name may I deduce that u are spanish, right?

My sincere apologies BwP. But Mike Chair, I just swore an oath to the gods, how can I break it now without incuring their wroth?
Note to self: make sure correct grammar and spelling are used at all times.

  • Crap crap crap, Murphy’s Law damn you to the pits of hell. *Incurring* Sigh, I should have known that would backfire on me, badly.

  • It’s not really a preview. It’s more a “look how many awesome news sources think our show is the tits” barker. The real preview aired at the end of the episode. :)

There’s nothing real spoilery in this one. If you want spoilery, I’m pretty sure there’s been another teaser earlier this year that shows Viserys held down by two of the Dothraki in preparation for his crowning.

  • Anybody know how soon the next episode will be on HBOGO.com? I’m on the road and my hotel has Showtime, not HBO. Will I have to wait to Monday or after the west coast showing of GOT?

they are just charts IMDB has that keep track of what is popular on their sight. i am not 100% sure how they do it but i imagine it has to do with who/how many people are looking at the IMDB pages of the actors and/or movie/show. and IMDB is basically THE source for any and all movie/tv information on the internet so if GoT and Emilia are the top two page hit things this week on IMDB that is pretty damn impressive.

  • Who Is Jacopo Belbo?: was just over at imdb.com to check something else out when i saw this:
    http://www.imdb.com/chart/
guess who is at the top of the STARmeter Top 10 for this week? oh, that would be Emilia Clarke!
and guess what “movie” is at the top of the MOVIEmeter Top 10 for this week? oh, that would be Game of Thrones!

Wow! Now i know us GOT fanatics must have helped a fair bit, but still! That seems really impressive! I would expect this to be at least “tweetworthy” for WiC.

  • breastplate nipples,

Cheap fabric paint and an old pair of shorts you don’t mind ruining :)

I wear shorts under my skirt when I dance (modesty reasons), will have to see if anyone spots the writing next time :)

  • The Royal Wedding: The anti-‘Game of Thrones’

    EW.

I had no choice but to watch this thing today, for every TV channel in the US that has the morning news had this on instead. Mayhaps, this was the only morning news.

No deaths. No rapes. Not even a box of snakes. Booooor-ring.

  • Mike Chair: EW.

‘But even at a time when England finds itself in political, social, and economic turmoil no more intense than in that of Game of Thrones […]’

    We….are….fucked…. o.O

Slightly hyperbolic perhaps? I’m not sure we’ll be needing to repel Ironborn raiders any time soon. :D

  • Speaking of critics’ praise (and forgive me if this was contained in some preview I didn’t watch because I’m BwP or if this was linked earlier and I didn’t remember — but I don’t think it was),

    Rolling Stone Magazine says :

‘Game of Thrones’ Is a Genius Fantasy Saga — and Not Just for Geeks

Rolling Stone Magazine is huge because it hits the perfect demographic.

It’s designed to appeal to those of us who hate fantasy sagas. No centaurs, no wizards, no unicorns. Instead, it sticks to the timeless combo of breasts and beheadings.

The writer seems to have seen the first six episodes and/or has read the books so beware of spoilers.

  • Mike Chair,

The Targaryen princess has the most astonishing scene — she has to prove her mettle to her husband’s tribe at a ceremony where she eats the heart of a horse. Not only does she choke it down, she gets turned on while parading half-naked in front of the crowd with blood dripping off her face — she looks like she walked out of an NC-17 Fiona Apple video directed by Dario Argento.

now that is some funny shite … (from the Rolling Stone review … which is very spoilery FYI).

  • I agree and I agree with ALL those supportive reviews….I am soooooooo glad the show is getting its due credits! Everytime I see and episode I hunger for the next and the next…thank heavens Sunday is just a few hours away and the new episode is forthcoming…yay with one of my favourites Jon Snow! I will probably end up watching the episode about 4 times minimum…during air-time, repeats, OnDemand and what have you…good times!
