HBO has released two clips from episode three of Game of Thrones, entitled Lord Snow. One is of Jon training with the Night’s Watch and the other is of a conversation between Jaime and Ned. Watch them, plus HBO’s preview of episode 3, right here (the more spoilery episode clips are after the break).

I get the thoughts about the oath of the kings guard, but what is the logical alternative? Kill Ned when he comes into the throne room to protect the king? What were they going to do with the King? They fought a rebellion to put him on trial? Someone had to kill him.

The Jaime/Ned scene was just terrific. I have to say that all the extra scenes I’ve seen so far have been some of the best in the show. I am hoping the writers recognize this and don’t feel too chained to the dialog in the book going forward. Sometimes rewriting is better than simply cutting things down. (I am not advocating here for them to just rework the plot or anything but if they can solidify their own voice for the show that isn’t just a truncated version of Martin I will be very pleased)

I think you’re right, Eric–this is a great way of showing on screen what we were treated to in th books: NO character is purely a villian or hero. After pushing Bran out the window, and his generally cocky demeanor, no viewer could like Jaime. This scene questions that feeling. It will leave viewers saying “wait, the Mad King killed Ned Stark’s brother and father, and Jaime killed the Mad King? Why isn’t Ned more grateful?” But at the same time, as Ned says, Jaime only acted when it was “safe” to do so. If nothing else, the viewer is allowed to see a sticky situation from both sides.

Very true. On the plus side, it may allow D&D to cut scenes from later seasons that establish points that are being explored early in season 1. There is a lot of internal dialogue in Jaime POVs later on that is expressed in this Jaime and Ned scene. The other benefit is that when we do get to those scenes in the books that gave us insight into Jaime’s motivations, we won’t feel as though he is abruptly acting out of character. Without the internal dialogue of Jaime’s POVs, his actions would otherwise appear to the viewer to be a very sudden change, as if the writers just decided “let’s make Jaime a good guy now to keep things interesting.”

Joel,
It is not about killing Aerys as much as it is who killed him. By Eddard Stark standards Jaime broke his vow to protect king and royal family with his life. All other members of kingsguard upheld those vows, even Barristan who later bent the knee. Jaime killed his king while he was sworn to protect him. If someone else, like Mountain, Eddard or someone else killed Aerys while Jaime would be protecting the keep or Elia and kids nobody would blame him. But he killed him and let Lannisters sack the city.
But what bugs Eddard the most (in that he is similar to Stannis) is that Jaime dared to sit on throne after he killed the king. For Eddard world is simple, either you are good or bad and your actions define you. He does not care what were your intentions, but your actions.

These previews look great! Episode 2 was so much better than the pilot.. I have great hopes for ep 3 and beyond.

As you might remember from the books (regarding Jaimes reasons for killing Aerys) – The Mad king had jars of wildfire planted all around(underground?) Kings Landing, and when he realised he was losing his crown he was going to burn the whole city. So Jaime had some very, very good reasons for killing him right then and there.

BwP- I admire your restraint, but OMFG NCW is nailing this shit! Both of these clips clearly demonstrate why this show rocks. NCW will be a international star one day. The eyes; the emoting; the ease of playing Jaime. And all this with a sense of what lies ahead.
And that night’s watch clip was spot on too.
All I can say is even with these “spoilers” the show is still awesome. I, like others, was a little comfortable with the pilot, but ep.2 knocked it out of the park even with the previews. Ep.3 will be just as good. . . Previews or not. 3min – 60min still = 57 minutes of GOT goodness.

Thanks for the replies. Even without knowing any others reasons for Jamie’s behavior, it seems that the level of hostility by Ned is a bit hypocritical, since he himself was willing to break vows of fealty, though less weighty then the Kingsguard vows, AND was willing to sacrifice and kill thousands of people in a rebellion, which is much more weighty, in order to kill the same person.
Maybe this viewpoint is one intended by GRRM.

Sam DeGree,
i agree. it seems a lot of changes are being made for the sake of later seasons, which i think is a good instinct. a spoilery prediction i have is that the hound is gonna kill the mountain at the hand’s tourney. that would get across a lot of the dynamic that in the book plays out in many many scenes, and i think D&D also want to scale Dorne way down. I don’t think they’ll do the Dorne chapters or even the Red Viper, that’s just way too much including everything else. so if they scale that stuff down, they have to (or may want to; who says the mountain has to die?) kill the mountain somewhere else. it may also be a much stronger hound beginning, might characterize him much more strongly earlier than the books.

Avalanche3319Quote Reply
Larry,
That is possible, but I hope it is not true! the red viper is badass, and the fight with Gregor is probably one of the most looked-forward-to scenes from the books. Also, the fact that George apparently noted the change to D&D tells me it is a relatively minor character that bites the dust early; if it was someone major like Gregor, he likely wouldn’t have felt the need to point the change out to D&D, as it would be fairly obvious that they were conscious of the change.

NCW FTW. He is quickly becoming my favorite actor in this show. And this is from someone whom book Jaime didn’t leave much of an impression on. (Only read GOT so far, but he really doesn’t stand out much). There’s a lot of nuance and depth that NCW is giving the performance, and all of the added material for the character has been a really interesting choice as well. His smugness, almost a self righteousness in that he acts in the only way he could conceive to act, makes every scene with him gripping.

I’m more worried about NCW. Not his acting, which is exemplary, but his accent. It can sometimes wander the wrong side of Nordic, which I find a little distracting. Not majorly so, and seeing him in these isolated scenes emphasises it somewhat, but I hope it settles down later.

I have a slightly spoilery question. In an earlier preview or maybe something I read about the show, Robert at one point makes a sarcastic remark to Jamie about “What did the mad king think when you stabbed him in the back?” and I also remember reading a Jaime retort somewhere about him saying he was thinking about his spear going through Aerys’s guts. I swear I am not dreaming this but…in the books I thought Jaime slit Aerys’s throat. Stabbed him in the back? I am hoping that is metaphor, because I really never saw Jaime as a coward who would sneak in and stab Aerys from behind. Thoughts?

Alexander DubrovskyQuote Reply
persephone88,
As far as I can remember, there’s a few different accounts of it. In his Tower of Joy dream Ned says “Ser Jaime slew your king with a golden sword,” but I distinctly remember mentions of spears and throat cutting as well.
AdrianQuote Reply
I just went and looked it up (ASoS: chapter 11) Jaime tells Aerys that it is Rossart’s blood on his sword; ‘Those purple eyes grew huge then, and the royal mouth drooped open in shock. He lost control of his bowels, turned, and ran for the Iron Throne. Beneath the empty eyes of the skulls on the walls, Jaime hauled the last dragonking bodily off the steps, squealing like a pig and smelling like a privy. A single slash across his throat was all it took to end it.’
As Aerys was trying to escape, the throat-cutting was probably done from behind. If we can trust Jaime’s memory (and why not?) that’s how it went down in the books.
In that clip I would assume Ned and Jaime are discussing ‘stabbing in the belly’ and ‘stabbing in the back’ not in a literal sense (I doubt Ned gives two shits about how Jaime killed Aerys) but as a euphemism for ‘killing with/without honour’. That’s how I would read the scene anyway.

Thing is, it’s a show, which is, obviously, us watching the books played out; because of this, we don’t get opportunity to hear/read the characters thoughts. If we watched a direct translation of the books to the screen, all we would see are actions and little or no reasoning, but these scenes flesh out exactly what we book-readers, well, read!
Absolutely love it.

I agree with you about accent variety being a good thing. I think the use of northern (english) accents by the Starks but the courtly folks being closer to RP works really well at establishing place, and it would be great to have other places thus characterised. My only gripe (and it is very minor, mostly it’s fine) is consistency; you would expect the Lannister clan to have mostly identical accents to each other, but Jaime sticks out slightly. That’s all.
As for ‘british/english fantasy’… I’m not sure what you mean by that, but it is certainly true that GRRM uses a lot of British/English history as inspiration for events in his novels. I’m not sure you can escape some inherent ‘britishness’ remaining.

It’s a matter of obsessiveness. We all (most of us) have read the books, so we do know the storyline. The BWP believes that by watching new scenes online and the “Next on Game of Thrones” clips, we are watering down the experience of seeing it fresh for the first time in the episode. Obsessive, I know. But I truly believe, from past shows, that the “Next on” previews show too much. I want my first glimpse of Sir Loras and Lysa Tully and the Eyrie, and other things to be seen during the episode, not in a trailer or clip.

I think wouldn’t say that explaining it twice in the books – once when he’s dead drunk – and even then he never tells Catelyn that Aerys was going to blow up King’s Landing – and once when he’s almost died and still has a high fever from an infection. I don’t see that as “constantly” explaining. This scene with Ned seems totally out of character for Jaime and it makes Ned look somewhat unsympathetic too. What he seems to be asking of Jaime is that he should have died in an undoubtedly futile attempt to save the Starks – I guess Ned would have respected that? It seems a bit much to expect Jaime to risk his own life for two people who were strangers to him! Maybe in the context of the whole episode it will work better, but right now, it just strikes me as a clumsy way to recreate Book!Ned’s dismay at finding Jaime on the Iron Throne – a dismay that even Robert dismisses as ridiculous!

Abyss,
Wow, thanks. Any word on whether or not this is the shooting script, or the original pilot script that’s available elsewhere?
ZachQuote Reply
Zach,
I would guess that’s the shooting script, because of the date (2011), but I don’t know for sure. But if you ask me it would be very weird to sell a leaked script.

You’re gonna watch the episode six times before next week anyway.
This no previews thing smacks of “Now that millions of people have been exposed to *our special thing,* we need to find a NEW way to feel exclusive.”
Feel free to disagree, but that’s how I feel.

Since english, norhtern or any other accent is completely fake in Songs of Ice and Fire (since its not happening in britain) differences with accents are quite the secondary concern, if that.
And as far as British language or dialects is concerned it is something that has started to really, really annoy me in the last decade or so since it seems that ALL fantasy for some reason ends up as if it is British.
Now if the author was in fact British and he wrote about a setting thats happening in Britain or is heavily based on Britain- i wouldn’t mind. But even games that have nothing to do with Britain in any way end up with bloody British voiceovers.
Dont even mention the obnoxious cliche of “dwarves” speaking in Scotish/English accent to me… i still cant forget the Dungeons and Dragons atrocity Gimli got turned into in that awful thing Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings.
(yeah, yeah, it was awesome because billions of people gave money to see it, whatever, dont get me started on that one)
Of course i know that Martin took some inspiration from historic events but that does not make Songs a fantasy world related to Britain in any way.
There is nothing inherently British in Songs at all.
Yes, they seem to have hired mostly British actors and its natural they will use their own language etc etc… but it just annoys the hell out of me.
Jaimes language or accent is a breath of fresh air to me.
If there is any discrepancy its because Tyrion for some strange reason is talking funny, not Jaime!
Somebody should spank it out of him!
Also, Milosh promised he tried his very best to get that specific accent right. I just hope they havent cut out many of those awesome lines Syrio has.
And it better not turn out to be cockney or something because i will be like : “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

When we still had to wait nearly a year, I couldn’t resist… but now I just don’t see any good reason to watch these scenes.

Mate, you obviously care about this subject a lot more than I do. Although using English would make more sense to me given some of the sources GRRM uses (and that it’s a US-made production), I don’t particularly mind if the accent is English or not, hell, in my head the Ironborn sound Scandinavian and the Braavosi sound vaguely Greek.
My only (very minor) points were that a) I like that they’re using regional dialects to distinguish between certain areas, and b) that Jaime’s accent should be pretty much identical to Cersei’s (whatever language they’re speaking), but NCW doesn’t always achieve this.

I have to say I agree with the people that are a little annoyed at the BwP people in this thread. If you don’t want to watch previews that is fine. More power to you. But don’t post in the thread that is entirely dedicated to previews. Just don’t open the preview thread. You don’t have to comment on every post. It is that simple.

Yeh, it’s tiresome by this point, and I hope it doesn’t become the norm for half of the comments in every inevitable previews thread to be informing others they don’t plan to watch. If I’m interested in a movie, I partake in discussions about it. Normally, if I don’t plan on watching it, though, I refrain. One can infer from someone’s silence in a thread that they weren’t interested. Disinterest is only annoying when others are beat over the head with it.
That said, it’s not a huge deal, and I don’t need to say anything else…

Well…bah, not bothersome, really. (IMO–perhaps others are more concerned with it than I am. I was just chiming in because others were…)
I chuckled at the whole thing for awhile, and the reasoning behind it is sound. It’s just slightly worn out by now :)
People say “Well, you know the books. Why are you concerned with spoilers?” forgetting that a good number of preview clips we’ve seen so far have in fact featured scenes not in the book at all. And if people want to have their initial experience unspoiled, who can blame them? After all, the repetition of some of the early bits from the trailers certainly dampened my own reaction to the first episode. So count me as someone who quietly supports your cause.
ZackQuote Reply
I think the point is everyone experiences things differently. For some people, foreknowledge lessens the experience, while for others, like me, it makes it better. I live on the hype man, and when i see something familiar in the show, I go “hey, I know this part!” in a good way, rather than “ah the part I know, how boring.” If it wasn’t an adaption it would be different I think, I tend to not follow the “next on” with other shows. But here I WANT to be a part of the translation process, and starting to think about how they changed things before I see it in context is really helpful to me for that.
But I’m all for the BwP! Even though I am not a part of the brotherhood, the fact that the show is actually currently running now, rather than looming in the distance, does make me pause before viewing previews longer than I would have before. Not because I’m afraid to be spoiled, but because I don’t really care that much, knowing I’ll see it soon enough. It’s not like when we had a single screenshot to tide us over for 4 months. Oh gods…
Re: fantasy = british accent. I think that notion evolved along with the genre, in a similar fashion to how accents evolve in the first place. With ice and fire being, mostly, within that genre (even parodies belong in the genre they parody), it fits right along with that evolution. Many of the original fantasy stories that had an influence on the genre WERE in fact british. Especially the big one, JRRT’s created british mythical history. It doesn’t get much more british than that. Take a pseudo british history as an influence; place it in a pseudo british genre, with a strong history of cultural influence; and even if it is written by an American writer, it’s going to be hard to not see the british in it. It’s even worse with tv/movie versions, once the “fantasy=british” trope started there, it set the definition.
They may have had a chance to go against type here, but considering the source material, little reason to. It doesn’t immediately make you think, “hmm, not british at all”. In fact quite the opposite, especially considering all of the connotations that align here. And since this is the direction they went, it’s kind of a moot point now.

I’m touched that my opinion carries so much weight. Do whatcha want; knock yourselves out. Just be aware of an elitist undercurrent. That might not bother you, but it would drive me nuts.
KGQuote Reply
The BwP is not “elitist” nor is it “exclusive” as you mentioned earlier. All are welcome.
The BwP folks have the right to express their opinions that watching the previews lessens the experience of watching the episode for the first time. The BwP also have the right to recruit new members, so to speak, by making themselves and their stated purpose known to prospective members — people who may be on the fence regarding the preview issue.
There is no place better to do that than in a preview thread.
These posts should encourage the free and robust exchange of ideas. The BwP’s opinions are honest, submitted in good faith and are within the spirit and scope of this post.
The manner in which an opinion is expressed is inextricable from the thought itself. Giving those sharing the idea a name — BwP, creating a GRRM style oath, using signature lines, and other histrionics are typical and legitimate ways of inserting passion into a position.
It’s not that your “opinion carries so much weight”, KG. It’s that you’re attributing some ulterior motive to ours.
The notion that people should keep their opinions to themselves in a place designed for expression is not simple, Gecko, it’s counterintuitive.
Mike ChairQuote Reply
I don’t think this whole BwP thing is intended to feel exclusive. It is just a statement of personal preference in a geeky way. If you are a roleplayer at heart these things come natural to you. People could as well claim they are member of the “monks with strong resolutions” (for those who want to but can’t always resist the temptation to watch) or the “dornish snakes with a thousand eyes” (for those who are determined to watch and read everything they can as soon as possible). Of course you can extend it to other subjects. There’s the “faceless in the dark” (for those who like to watch alone with the lights out), the “exiled bears” (for those who live in a country where GoT hasn’t been sold yet) etc etc. You could say that house Gatewatch has a lot of factions.
But a warning is correct. Already some people are annoyed with it. If the different factions of house gatewatch profile themselves more prominently fruit and vegetables will be thrown. Demands will rise to know what faction FaB belongs to and before you know it we have a power struggle within house Gatewatch.
Seriously it is just some wordplay with little actual meaning. But apparently that joke isn’t funny anymore. No problem.

People were speculating here about which character GRRM was refering to as dying earlier in the show than in the books.
I think its Roderick Cassel. There’s not many characters that die in season 2 or 3 that are cast yet, whose early deaths would make no difference to the plot.
Ser Roderick has alot to do in season 1, but then pretty much nothing until his death in season 3 during the sack of Winterfell. I’m guessing they kill him in season 1, perhaps he dies during the fight with the mountain clans on the way to the Eyrie.

I know, unfortunately it has became almost a standard and it really got out of hand.
I may be wrong but i strongly disagree that Martin intentionally made the Song “british” in any way.
He took inspiration for some plot narrations and threads from history – that happened to be British, he took others from history of other countries. Its just an inspiration – not something translated directly with elicit intention to make the story “british”.
I think such things annoy me most of all because they move something that is supposed to be strange, otherworldly, fantastical to something that is connected to our own world too much – and i dont like it.
To be more precise: Im not reading and enjoying the Songs because of similarities or connections to our reality and events. I dont care for the war of Roses at all.
I read it because of the Starks, daenerys, Tyrion, Littlefinger, Lanisters and so on and so on.
So…yeah!
