The hits keep comin’

More Quick Hits from your pals here at House Gatewatch:

* WonderCon in San Francisco (often called the Bastard Step-child of Comic-Con) is in full swing, and one of the featured booths is HBO’s Game of Thrones booth. I wish I was in San Fran! They’re selling the shirts and other cool stuff. Among many things on display, including costumes used in the actual filming, is an insanely cool Iron Throne replica which you can actually sit in and have your picture taken—and then have it made into a Game of Thrones poster much like the iconic one with Sean Bean. Our own pics are to come (hopefully) but until then check out these by our friends at TelevisionBlend!

* HBO.com has added a $10,000 sweepstakes to their site called Win The Throne. It’s pretty much a typical sweepstakes “Trade your e-mail and mailing address for the chance to win cash” kind of thing, except for the fact that it is then followed by a “What House do you best belong to?” questionnaire, which is sort of fun (though thoroughly manipulatable if you already know which house you want to belong to). You then get a chance to “Betray” the family you’ve aligned with or “Befriend” other people … which is just another way for the promotion to try to lure your friends in. Honestly, the Maester’s Path stuff from Campfire was cooler. Though I’ll never argue with ten grand.

* Finally, the awesome Mike Rosenzwig and Jorge Angel of the web comic Half Assed have dedicated this week’s strip to a Game of Thrones nerdy fanboy discourse. On Tuesday’s strip, see if you can’t recognize a certain familiar house motto placed upon a tee shirt. Glad to know we’re supported!

It’s gettin’ crazy ’round here.

That is SO COOL that there’s a big GoT presence at WonderCon. I wish I was there — I’d love to get a photo sitting in the Iron Throne. :)

The sweepstakes thing is also doing that “write down the code and win” thing you see on tv. Right now the place to get codes is the latest videos posted on xfinity. My guess is that they will also be showing codes after stuff like the preview on Sunday and the series premier in two (!) weeks.

I’m hoping that we will see some more viral marketing stuff over the next two weeks targeted more at people that are not already fans of the books. Maester’s path stuff was cool but it ended and now we have to wait two weeks without puzzles.

This is ridiculously off topic, but the possibility of Tricia Helfer for Mel in season 2 is a tad slimmer (for those who liked her for the role): http://rabiddoll.com/node/1733/battlestar-galactica-veterans-swarm-precinct-17.html

The Game of Thrones facebook page has hundreds of photos of people sitting in the Iron Throne. Since it’s a convention and some people are in costume, there are some funny pics: Sailor Moon sitting on the iron throne, Clone Troopers, etc.

That’s not such a bad thing. I’m sure there are better actresses out there for the role anyway. The only thing now that we might have to deal with is the possibility of Amanda Peet in the role (due to being David Benioff’s wife etc). I’ve only seen her in like The Whole Nine Yards though (oh and Gulliver’s Travels, which was AWFUL)…

I knew Illyrio straight away (which I found puzzling), but I only realized the other one was Varys when he visited Ned in the same disguise later in the book, that must be his ‘Rugen’

Really do hope for Tower of Joy flashback !

The HBO sweepstakes website will not allow me to enter a “y” in the email field. It doesn’t work in Chrome, Safari or Firefox. Additionally, entering a “z” deletes the field. It is almost as if the Flash seems to think that the command key is being depressed. Strange. Only happens on that site. Anyone else having this problem?

this is off topic but since this is the newest thread.

watched Camelot Ep2 last night (watched the Ep1 back when it was pre-released). now, i learned my lesson with Spartacus: Blood and Sand never to judge a show by the first few episodes. S:B&S started utterly sh!te and by Ep4 it was pretty damn good and fell into a nice niche, it did what it did pretty well. i hope the same thing happens with Camelot because i have to admit, it is a rough start. every once in a while when everyone is being as natural and low key as possible it seems pretty good. then somebody starts overacting or some rubbish and cheesy dialog turns up and it is hard not to laugh at the whole thing. and as for spending more money than GoT i am not really all that impressed with the look.

having said that it is less cheesy than Merlin (BBC) but i am not sure it is better. Merlin is fine since it isn’t trying to be anything other than a fun and frivolous show for the whole family. Camelot seems like it is trying to hard to be serious and failing miserably. i do hope it gets better because i’d hate to think GoT lost out on Eva Green as Melisandre for a steaming pile of dog feces.

i will continue watching in hopes things improve or if nothing else we get to see more of Eva Green naked!

I notice Mildred Pierce starts at 15 min past the hour, but will we get the preview ,or will they fill up that time with trailers for everything else ? We haven’t been getting all the new GoT stuff at the same time as the US , soI’m a bit nervous.

I pretty much had exactly the same thoughts as you did watching Camelot. There’s certain things about it that I like, but there are still some issues that kind of annoy me. I just hope that there is room for both Camelot and GoT. If people choose Camelot over GoT I think it would be a mastake.

Sigh… I’m glad the non-fantasy fans are liking it, but man… why do critics have such a mental block against fantasy? They all seem to say “I’m not a fan of the genre, but I loved it!”. Guess what, folks? That means you ARE a fan of the genre now.

And that other guy, who said “not a fan of middle earth fantasy kingdom stuff”. Really? “Middle earth fantasy kingdom stuff”? You’re a professional writer, and you write sentences like that?

Kind of funny hearing some of these critics seem surprised that Camelot/Borgias kind of suck (based on early bad reviews) and seem totally surprised that Game of Thrones is good. Well… d’uh! If you’d paid attention to us, you would have known this a long time ago! :)

EDIT: Oh, both those tweets above are from the same woman. Glad she’s liking it, but really don’t like her continued repetition of how much she hates the genre. Still, I guess that’s a huge positive sign for GOT.

On the Camelot bit, it seems the show really doesn’t want to be Spartacus, with its little nudity and horrifically underwhelming fights and gore, it seems it wants to be a more serious contender to GOT.

That said I’ll give it some more time because you never know but when I was watching it an Arther was waffling all I could think was “Boy, if you play the game of thrones you win or you die.”

Yeah, I’ve noticed too that there is definitely an unfair stigma against fantasy, even among those who should know better. But, to be fair, after first reading Game I have had no interest in the derivative fantasy that I used to enjoy. Maybe that has more to do with aging, but it’s easier to just blame George for ruining my fantasy fixation ;)

At least fantasy isn’t still considered akin to satanic worship (seriously – I remember facing such nonsense as a child from adults who, again, should have known better)

Sad to say that where I live is considered “Bible Belt”, and I was in my local charity shop last week and noticed pamphlets giving advice to parents to ban their kids from all Harry Potter films etc because the magic words used where actual satanic spells which would cause demonic forces to attach themselves to the kids. It may be the twentyfirst century but some people are still narrow minded enough or uneducated enough to be influenced by this medieval paranoia. ……sad but true.

Got my picture taken in the Iron Throne. :D

HBO had a large area, which was good, as there was a constant line of 30+ people every time I passed by to get pictures taken. The costumes (Robert, Dany, Ned) looked great in person, especially the one for Dany, which looks even better than in the videos. The Maester costume was, to be honest, a little strange- a short burlap hooded cloak with a chain. The chain was nice, but the whole getup, out of context, looked a bit like a Jawa with bling.

If you’re in the Bay Area I definitely recommend going on Sunday. They only had the t-shirts in men’s sizes, but if you buy a shirt you get a really nice glossy shopping bag with the iron throne on it!

Definitely a lot of buzz amongst geeks about this at the convention, but, well, it’s kind of a geek convention already. Still, it was nice to hear so many people talking about it in line and be accepted as totally normal when I said I had been waiting for this since I first posted the ‘HBO buys rights’ announcement on Westeros. I ran into my former roommate, who was representing the Browncoats of California over in the costuming division, and she immediately knew what I was talking about when I said Iron Throne. Good times!

Just got back from WonderCom in San Francisco! The costumes were very cool, I liked Ned’s costume the best – his cloak was gorgeous. Daenerys’ wedding dress was very pretty as well. Lots of people in the booth and there was a line to have your picture taken on the Iron Throne (it’s plastic). I was all ready to buy a House Targ and House Stark shirts (2 for $35, pretty good deal) but they only had men sizes XXL left. They had smaller Greyjoy sizes but I can’t stand Theon so I passed.
