Winter is almost here!

The days on the countdown clock are at zero! And the hours and minutes are ticking away. With the show about to air, we wanted to give you guys a heads-up on our post-airing plans for this site.

Episode Chat
Each week we’ll put up a post shortly before that week’s episode is set to air, previewing the episode and allowing fans to discuss the show as it airs, if they wish.

Episode Recap
We plan to have a recap and reaction to each episode soon after it airs. This post will include thoughts on the difference between the books and the show and we also may speculate on future events. As such, it is meant for book readers ONLY.

Newbie Recap
We also plan to have a recap and reaction post from someone who is new to the series and hasn’t read the books. The hope is that new viewers will gravitate towards these posts and can discuss what they think might happen next.

Spoiler Policy
Obviously, this means that we have to be very careful of spoilers. So we are going to reiterate and refine our spoiler policy here:

  • No spoilers on the front page ever. Everyone can view the main page to get the latest news on the series without any fear of spoilers.
  • General news posts will be spoiler-free as well. The comments for these posts may contain spoilers and we ask that everyone use spoiler tags when including potential spoilers on general news posts.
  • Speculative posts, such as our casting or scripting posts, will likely contain spoilers. These will be hidden after the jump, of course, and a spoiler warning will be given prior to the break. We ask that folks still tag their spoilers in the comments here.
  • The episode recaps will include spoilers from the first book. These threads are meant for those who have read the first book. Any spoilers for future books must be tagged in the comments.
  • Newbie recaps are a spoiler-free zone. Anyone posting spoilers in here, tagged or otherwise, will be banned and that includes veiled spoilers or hints. Just don’t do it.

Longtime lurker and occasional (read, three or four time) poster here. Oh my god, my bottom needs supporting. I opened my email this morning (I use Outlook), and saw that the task I had set up the day we learned the premiere date was listed on the main page of my Outlook!

I can’t wait for tonight. It’s finally here!!!!!! After a long day of choir performances, I’m plopping in front of my tv with a no interruptions policy signed by my family.

Oh, and I totally got someone interested in the show just last night!

So I’ve followed this great website for around 1-2 years (just posted once or twice) and I want to say how much I appreciate the great work you guys are doing. Im so excited to see my favourite books coming to life and will happily continue following this site. Cant wait for all the discussions of the upcoming episodes and the new people who will join this page.
So finally winter is arriving *.*

I’m pumped, too! This day is going to go by so slowly.

I’d like to make the suggestion that those who’ve read the books refrain from commenting in the newbie recap posts. Inevitably, some non-reader will theorize something that’s suspiciously accurate, and, innocent or not, it could become a bad scene. I can’t wait to read what they think, but I’m not gonna say a word.

Hopefully, everyone will be good, but I have a feeling WIC.net will get an explosion of new readers in the coming weeks, and not everyone will support the bottom.

Been a lurker here for forever, only posted a few times, but I just wanted to say thanks for all the work that you’ve put into this over the many months since this whole thing started. I’m almost embarrassed at how much I am looking forward to it. Almost. I have contacted about two dozen people today that have no interest in fantasy at all and commanded them to watch tonight. The party we had planned kind of fell through, because it was rumored there would be snow (fitting, eh?) and I was afraid that God would play a cruel trick on me and wreck my car, making me miss the show, so I cancelled it. Again, thanks for the into and entertainment! Keep it coming!

Hah, can’t wait to lurk those newsbie-comments, although I think there won’t be alot of them. Great spoiler-policy! I’m so annoyed with commenters who say that people who haven’t read all books should avoid the comments, I bet 30% here hasn’t read through book 4 yet and you don’t want to exclude them from commenting.

So who wants to make a bet what the first big question we’re all going to get asked by all the non-readers tonight at 10:05?

I’m watching with my sister, who hasn’t read it. I’ve tried every which way except strapping her down to read it, so far, no luck. I do think that in the next week or two, she’s finally going to ask me to read it though.

But I know tonight, at 10:05, she going to say to me, OMG! is he dead? what happens to him?

    I’m not telling her, haha.

I like the spoiler policies, but I think you should post the newbie spoiler free policy on all the newbie threads in case someone misses this discussion. Maybe even list the appropriate spoiler policy at the end of every topic’s article. Especially once this thread gets bumped off the front page in the future.

Yeah, I hope there are a lot of people who like surprises and don’t start looking for the answer right away. Unfortunately, my sister isn’t one of them! If she persists (and she will) she might go looking for the answer, so I might have to tell her. If it’s a choice between her finding out TOO much, and me just giving her a little hint, I guess I will have to tell something…to hold her over until next week.

Could I also make a suggestion regarding spoilers. If you are posting a spoiler can you at least write which book you are spoiling because there was a spoiler on here which I assumed was from one of the four published books WRONG!!! it was from A Dance with Dragons.

So if anyone is posting ADWD spoilers can you please preface it by saying ADWD spoilers. I will be avoiding the internet entirely when it gets released just to be on the safe side.

I’ll be looking forward to the episode analysis and discussions.

I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to D&D for creating this show, thank you to HBO for supporting the bottom in the best possible way (the promotional campaign and fan catering like nothing I’ve seen before), thank you to WiC.net for this wonderful space to discuss this TV show, and of course to GRRM for writing the novels on which this show is based. It’s been a great several months checking in to the website on a daily basis to see if the show would go to series, reacting to the first teaser, feeling giddy about every bit of casting news and promotional picture, and sitting back and enjoying all the videos, games, etc. HBO created for us to pass the time as we wait for the premier. Regardless of future seasons, I must say HBO has done the best they could to support this show and please the fans, and I am very grateful for that.

I don’t remember the first time I came here, but back then we just knew that Bean and Dinklage would be in it. Since then WiC is a place where I come everyday and while I don’t post a lot, I lurk so much here, enjoying the amazing work put up by Winter, FaB and HmR, having fun reading most of the comments.

It’s been crazy all the way, from the casting clues to the spies in NI, the Maester’s path and it’s unforgettable scent box, leading to the words of House Gatewatch: Always Support the Bottom, the dissecting of every bit of promo material and last to date, the Lost feud and the Ginia-Gate.

Again, THANK YOU EVERYONE, if had had to name all the commenters who’s names I remeber for their support of the fanbase and the bottom, It would take me to the end of the countdown. Let’s just say that from Rabbit’s digging to the youtube channel of certain pirate, my bottom feels supported.

Long time lurker, first time poster! :) Just want to echo everyone else’s sentiments about how much we appreciate the work put into this website. My bottom is firmly supported, thanks guys! I can’t wait until tonight, even though I have a 9am exam tomorrow I should be studying for instead, whoops!

And I thought I’d add a cautionary tale for all those ‘newbies’ who, like me, bravely read everything underneath black spoiler tags or looked stuff up on wikipedia, just cause I can. -stupid- haha.

I’m currently reading Book 3, and some time ago I found about a death that occurs in Book 3. I’m trying to keep this spoiler-free so newbies can read it, so hopefully that isn’t TOO vague or anything for everyone else wondering who I’m talking about. But anyway, for about TWO weeks or more, I have only been able to read 100? pages if that because every page I flip is one page closer to that horrible reality. I’m only a chapter away now so I’ll have to suck it up. :( I don’t think I have been even able to enjoy those chapters leading up to the death as much as I would have otherwise. So spoiling yourself is seriously not worth it guys. I’d probably be on Book 4 now by now if I hadn’t been so silly and read that spoiler.

Also, the Preview button is useful, you can play around with trying out different posts without actually making a post.

Also (also), it looks like you were trying to make another spoiler, but for some reason it came out like this:

Thanks, Mimsy. (b)(/b)May your bottom be forever supported(b)(/b)

    *substitute < for ( and &rt; for )

To make it a spoiler, it should of looked like this:

Thanks, Mimsy. (b)May your bottom be forever supported(/b)

    Hope this helps!

Edit: it appears that Preview is not necessarily the same as the final post turns out… at least there is an edit option

    Great news!

Hungary’s main news portal index.hu, on behalf of the premier, I guess, changed the titles of different topics to the names certain Great Houses.

I still can’t believe it, that this is real. Finally, after these years i’ve been waiting for this day and reading EVERY news and information about this series gets on TV…Though, here in Germany i have to wait til the DVD / BlueRay comes out i wish you all a great time with the first season. Just started to re-read the books in english, so i can start reading the 5th when it hits the bookstores (started the 2nd some weeks ago).
Again, great compliement to you, WiC (and of course FaBio and HmR), for this superb site!

    Have fun ya’ all…

Maybe i can get a glimpse at the Intro, which wasn’t included in the 14min preview at youtube.

GoT hasn’t been sold in the netherlands yet, so I have to wait for it to appear online.
My site of choice for tv programs is eztv (google it). TVseries like GoT usually appear a couple of hours after broadcast (certainly within a day, and in multiple quality, wait for the 720p). It will appear all over the web anyway.
Remember: this is in no way an encouragement to watch for free (I WILL buy the DVDs) everyone should try to support HBO as much as possible to ensure further seasons. But as the poll shows there are a lot of people here who like me are not able to watch it directly (and just cannot wait for the DVDs). I am sure discussions will last a couple of days so we will still be able to join.

As far as the plans for WiC.net go. I like them. I look forward to lurk in the newbie threads and to give my opinion in the other ones.

Nice to see so many new faces posting here. It now then only raises one question. I don’t live in the area where I could see the episode at the moment it airs first time, but I would so much want to discuss with other fans about the the episodes when they air. So should I only read the newbie posts until I can see the episode one way or another, or should I just brace myself and read and discuss everything with others without seeing it myself.

    My life is so hard.

While I admit Episodes 1-3 of Camelot underwhelmed – Episode 04 of Camelot seemed to tear a page right from the typewriter of GRRM (in terms of depicting conflict within and shades of grey for all the major characters).

If Camelot builds upon Episode 04 (much in the same way that Spartacus got GOOD with Episode 5 last year) then Camelot is a show that may prove to be worth watching.

I’m not saying Camelot is GoT. I am saying that Episode 4 of Camelot shows it is not Legend of the Seeker and holds real promise. This is not a Zero-sum game. Having two (and with The Borgias, three) shows I actually may want to watch is a lot better than having only ONE show I want to watch.

Seriously. Check out Episode 4 of Camelot. I was almost impressed.

Edgy, violent, moving, agreeably complex, darkly funny, fast-paced, nudity-embracing and possessed of an army of compelling characters, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is an A+ entertainment and the season’s best new series. I wager it may even end “Mad Men’s” long reign as Emmy’s best drama.

Let me go a step further. So far I’m enjoying it more than Peter Jackson’s excellent “Lord of the Rings” movies.

I agree. Camelot pales in comparison, of course, to Thrones, but the last episode was particularly good. I don’t have a problem with this show. With the dearth of decent sci-fi/fantasy shows out there, I think it should be supported. Is it perfect? Not by a long shot. But I am a sucker for this kind of programming and it is way better than a lot of bad stuff out there. In other words, I’m not a harsh critic.

Borgias. Camelot. Thrones. All good in my opinion.

    Steel_Wind,

i’m gonna have to disagree. episode 4 of Camelot was the worst yet. it was way way way over the top trying in vain to be all dark and serious and failing miserably.

everybody in the episode is either whispering or glowering or growling. Joseph Finnes sucks, sorry, loved him Shakespeare in Love but in this he has a constantly grimmacing face and spends the whole time just whisper-growling. Eva, my girl, is just so over the top it is making me cry. JCB, the guy who was going to be in about 5 minutes of GoT before being killed is supposed to be the acting glue that holds the show together? he is terrible … really really terrible.

and if they spent $7M on each episode somebody was skimming off the top and now has about $30M in some Swiss bank account somewhere because the art direction and costumes and sets look like complete rubbish. that show is an unwatchable mess. and it pains me to say that as a huge fan of the movie Excalibur (don’t even get me started about how the show handled Excalibur) and Eva Green i sooooo wanted to like this show.

    Who Is Jacopo Belbo?,

I’m going to have to agree with you here. I like the show enough to keep watching it, but Eva Green’s acting seems to be cranked up to like 11 at all times, Joseph Fiennes wouldn’t be out of place on a SNL skit, and the actor that plays Arthur is just painful.

Also, the whole Excalibur scene just felt really forced to me. Like “Hey, look at us, we’re putting a twist on the Excalibur/Lady in the Lake story, and isn’t it shocking??”

The ONE spin I do like is how they have Merlin as more of a conniving manipulator that is almost making up the famous Arthur legends as he goes, creating the legend that we would later read in the books out of thin air to build up Arthur’s legitimacy.

    Chris,

some of the basic ideas in the show aren’t bad per se. merlin as a “manipulator” instead of “magician” is decent. magic having a cost/being addictive sort of like a drug is kinda cool.

but the first thing i can’t get over is how cheap and sh!tty everything looks. take Camelot, it is like they picked some ruined castle to use but were told “hey this is old and overgrown with ivy so you can’t set dress it too much and have to leave up all of the ivy/overgrowth”. i get that Aurthur and his kingdom are new but for f**ks sake get some of those useless commoners strewn all about the “castle” to clear away some of the debris … they’ve got f**king tumbleweeds rolling around the castle. and Uther’s castle (now Morgans) looks terrible too especially the way it is “set” with all of those crappily done banners. the saddles, the costumes, the weapons all look terrible.

and the writing and general plotting is just downright stupid for the most part. so why did the guy forging Excalibur want to out of the blue kill Arthur somebody he’d never met, luckily Merlin has mind reading powers. too bad he is so bad at acting on his “insights” he had to kill the guy to get the sword (which is supposedly some great sword that A. looks like crap and B. took about 7 hours to make). then the thing with Excalibur was just forced … they already did the “myth-making” thing with the sword of mars in the stone … this just seemed forced.

the rest of the story/plot is just them rehashing over and over the same stuff … Morgan is messing with magic powers she doesn’t understand, Morgan is obsessed with the throne, Aurthur is obsessed with Guinevere who married somebody else and now he is all mopey and angsty, Arthur has grand visions for a new kind of kingdom (trouble being nobody would follow this guy because he is such a whinging little tosser and his castle still looks like a trailer park after a hurricane/tornado has come thru), Merlin is pulling the strings and will stop at nothing to make Arthur a great king (as long as what he needs to do can be accomplished by scowling and whispering in a menacing Steven Segal growl).

and seriously. every actor is terrible, or at least the lines they have are making them seem terrible. Arthur’s mom … sucks. Guinevere …. sucks. Leonitis … terrible. Gawain … not good. Arthur, the key figure … winny little beatch and not a good actor. Feinnes, one note whisper-growl and scowl everything. Eva as Morgan … just way over the top in almost every scene (the few times she dials it down she is he best part of the show).

they seriously should have just adapted an existing take on the Merlin/Arthur thing (like MZB’s Mists of Avalon or Lawhead’s Pendragon Cycle) because the lack of a quailty written source material is super obvious … and then they should have picked a direction … lighter fantasy or dark/grim fantasy and not try to do both and fail at them … and they needed a better art director/visual supervisor and also a better casting director because the show looks rubbish and almost every actor is rubbish.

I decided earlier today that I’m going to cross-stitch the house sigils onto some kitchen towels I bought earlier today. I’d like to have the sigils look as much like the ones that will be used on the show as possible (and I really don’t like how any of the ones on Westeros.org look)

If anyone gets a chance, could they post links to some of the house sigils? My husband requested Stark, Targaryen, Lannister, Arryn, Martell, Baratheon and Tully, and some of those are tough to find in colors/patterns that will translate well to cross-stitch.

my favourite horrible thing is the guards at Morgan’s castle are wearing these little mini capes of red leather (the go down to about mid back, completely useless except for looking preposterous) … it is soooo cheesy i can’t help but laugh every time i see them. i keep thinking of The Incredibles … “NO capes!”

I wonder how fast everything will start to proceed for the second season. They had the scripts finished by April and most of the cast before June on season one. If shooting commences in July, that gives them like 2 months to get everything up and running. Either we will have to wait till June for all the announcements or they have been secretly (Manhattan Project) casting and scripting, etc. before the premiere in anticipation. I know they have been doing some early prep work, keeping sets up, contracts extension and the like, but there are a ton of roles to be filled for two and scripts to be written (hope George gets to do another).

    Who Is Jacopo Belbo?, Lex,

I think they just don’t have good people working on the show(writers, producers, directors, art/set design, etc) The actors they have SHOULDN’T be as bad as they are, I think the writing and directing has a lot to do with it.

Also, I was thinking the same thing about the decrepit, overgrown Camelot. It looked cool at first, but what the hell does everyone do all day? The first thing any ruler would do was put everyone to work, not sit around all day and stare at Guinevere’s window.

My favorite part was how they enlist the help of some warrior who lives in a cave of some sort, who clearly doesn’t respect Arthur. Then, Arthur gets his ass kicked by Leontes, surrenders, waits until Leontes turns around and starts walking away, and then puts a knife to his throat and says”First lesson, never turn your back on an enemy.” THEN, the cave-warrior says “Now this is a ruler I can follow!” and shows the utmost respect from there on out. What the fuck? I think I pulled this move back in 2nd grade, and even then everyone thought it was a complete bitch-move.

    Lex,

I remember D&D saying how much they would’ve loved to have some helicopter shots like you see in LOTR but it just didn’t make sense with their budget.

Then I think the first shot of the first trailer of Camelot was a clear helicopter shot with a not-so-good CGI castle(Camelot) on a cliff.

Then you have some big name actors in Camelot delivering bad lines with bad direction.

Those two facts probably say a lot about why Camelot may have cost more than Game of Thrones but came out a lot worse.

Enjoy, you lucky people! I hope it’s as brilliant as we’ve all imagined.

I will stay away for a few days until I’ve found a way to watch (I’m still hoping to find someone I know has sky, as all other legal options have failed- but will buy DVDs whatever the case) and am looking forward to it with great anticipation. I’ve bought my ingredients for lemoncakes!

Ha Ha. HBO bought … the weather.

    SandSnake,

I was surprised to learn that there is a movement in England to adopt Dornish law on royal succession. HBO again?

Chris: Not sure I should even post this but Caryn James is at it again:

You don’t even have to choose between The Killing and the premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones tonight, but if you watch the splashy, silly new Medieval fantasy series back-to-back with this sharp contemporary mystery, be prepared for your head to spin.

Fortunately for Ms. James, “Khloe and Lamar” is on at 10 PM ET, to give her something worthwhile to view after “The Killing.”

    Great minds think alike, hahaha

I even went out a bought a case of beer today, and I don’t usually drink beer, haha.

I’m going to post some pictures on my facebook of the lemoncakes-we haven’t eaten them yet, we’ll probably have them at about quarter to the hour right before the show starts. They don’t look as neat as Tom Colicchio’s, but they look right, and damn they smell good!

    OMG-ONE HOUR.

Daughter and husband and grandaugter and boyfriend are coming over any minute now. I did not cook because I’ll be doing a marathon cooking this coming week for Easter and today is my birthday . So we’re having pastrami on jewish rye, coleslaw and “Arbor Gold”. Lemoncake for desert. I never got the ramekins so I went with the USA weekend ones and they look pretty good.

yay, finally after several years I was thrilled to watch GOT tonight. Being up to date with the books, and adhering to the policy of spoiler free, I will say I noticed a couple great foreshadowing scenes. I guess my only complaint would be I remember Tyrion being a fat Imp, not a skinny dwarf, but no matter. From what I can tell they followed the beginning of GOT very well. Looking forward to next weeks.
