Quick Hits: Infographics, games, names and pranks
By Winter Is Coming on in Marketing, Press.
  • Game of Thrones has some complex relationships, so what better way to keep track of them all than through an infographic? hauteslides has created one that shows the various character connections. It is spoiler free, for those worried about that. Bart McEndree has created a version with character photos.
  • In the same vein, HBO has provided the official downloadable viewers guide.
  • HBO has launched an official Game of Thrones Facebook game called Battle for the Iron Throne. It is described as “rich and complex like the world of Game of Thrones and incorporates many of the major themes of the series.” Sounds cool!
  • The HBO shop has been updated with loads of cool new items including house banners, t-shirts for Houses Martell, Tyrell and Clegane, and a really awesome Hound’s helm tee!
  • Hodor! Wow Insider continues their two-part interview with Kristian Nairn.
  • Here is a fun little Game of Thrones name generator. It is currently male names only, unfortunately.
  • More covers of the Thrones theme: a 70s metal dubstep version and another piano version. Speaking of which, the Game of Thrones official soundtrack is now available for pre-order on Amazon. It releases on June 14th.
  • Speaking of the opening credits, Art of the Title has a great interview with Angus Wall, the creator of the sequence. It also includes some really cool concept art.
  • On a related note, influenced by the opening credits with the camera sweeping over the map of Westeros, someone created a Thrones-inspired Starcraft map video.
  • For those wanting to learn more about the Dothraki language, Learn Dothraki has a cool and helpful video of Dothraki and its translation from episode 3.
  • A cool new blog was started, partly inspired by the Thrones food trucks, which posts recipes of foods that are mentioned in the books. It is called Inn at the Crossroads and it has some tasty looking dishes.
  • Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet has a funny story about Nikolaj Coster-Waldau playing a prank on executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss. Google Translate does well enough for us non-Danish speakers, but here is the story in a nutshell. David & Dan email Nikolaj to tell him to keep his hair long, Nikolaj responds saying he wants to take the character in a different direction and sends them a picture of him with his head shaved. David & Dan freak out and immediately start looking for someone who can quickly make a wig to match Jaime’s hairstyle and find out it will cost around $10,000. Thankfully, before any money is wasted, Nikolaj calls to tell them it was all a joke. He says it is payback for a prank they played on Kit Harington when they told him he would suffer serious burns in ep 8 and that he would have to spend the rest of the series in heavy makeup. Haha!
  • The new issue of TV Guide Magazine (May 16-22 issue) has some great new behind-the-scenes photos. It also includes a funny anecdote about an overexcited pheasant that charged the cast while they were filming a hunting scene and that Mark Addy had to fend it off with a spear!

Spoiler-free! The key words are spoiler-free!

(If HBO cut him *and are not telling us*, I’m through with them and this series. Call me stupid for being too impressionable, but I have problems enough to suffer about something that doesn’t exist in the first place.)

It seems like there are a lot of interesting anecdotes and insights into this series, moreso than most shows. I’m just wondering how extensive HBO’s past DVD releases have been? I’m hoping for something deep and extensive when GoT is released. Plus what cheesy little collectible do you think they’ll include?

    PS
It’s really annoying trying to comment on my phone…

Since I’m feeling bitchy and nitpicky today, the Iron Throne game on FB has a lousy interface. I can’t understand what I must do to start playing. This is question probably better answered on FB, but if you have hints you can reach me there as Paola Cartoceti – so you can also recruit me to gain more lives, according to the perverse mechanism of FB games.

Kyl, because the author felt they had some sort of special connection, I guess. I don’t think it means that they are in love, just that Jory admires her and vice versa.

Marta, yeah, it looks like they took the game down. Probably because it was too buggy, as Blackfish Blues mentioned. Hopefully they work the kinks out soon.

well I am a reader who doesn’t want to know what POV’s I’m going to experience in the book (and I know there are lots of others), so I definately blame George for putting that spoiler on his not-a-blog (a couple of months ago he warned his commenters not to post spoilers…). And what about all the readers who are just through book 1, now they know Barristan is going to play a big part later on while he is completely out of the picture at the end of the first book.

They are far from ‘banners’, those need to be made of fabric to be called that. They are correctly called heraldic ‘shield plaques’. I don’t understand how HBO dropped the ball on this one. Hopefully they will have fabric pennons/banners at some point.

What I really wish they would make as merchandise are replicas of some of the pins/broaches you see in the show. They all look really cool, and I would love to have one. (ie Littlefinger, Cat, Ned(hand), and both Targaryans)

    Winter Is Coming:
Magda M, no problem. Nice job on the graphic! How long did it take you to make it?

The first version took me longer than it should have because I didn’t plan on making it. I was just doodling and started to run out of paper space so I sat at the computer grabbed my standard man/woman icons and started arranging the figures to make all the connections. Then when I had all the different relationships mapped out I thought it was really cool to see the big picture how everyone was connected and decided to actually make it into an infographic with all the different icons of relationships, house sigils and little fun ways to personalize some of the main characters. All together it was about a full day of work.

This week I spent probably 8 more hours as I’ve posted different versions for the individual episodes and maps. I’ve read all the different comments both on my site and all the different sites that linked to it making changes if anyone hinted they were confused about an icon or relationship.

I don’t think it would be to costly or hard. As we know the hands pin was made of a hard resin like the Others ice blade. Then painted to look real. I don’t see how replicas of those things would be hard.

HBO marketing has so much going for it. That even in this depression fans are willing to buy QUALITY products/replicas.
Replicas of the FABRIC banners was one of my hopes, and when I saw “banners” in their GOT merch and checked the material it was made of it popped that happy bubble. I’ve seen barely any cool jewelry to be made replica of. Which is sad.

I’m happy to see all these covers of the theme song. I was hoping that would happen, but wasn’t sure whether it would. I like that crazy metal dubstep one (probably the most original so far). And that one that Abyss just linked to sounds like Legend of Zelda!

Also, I know I’ve posted this before… but it’s a Quick Hits thread, so I’m posting it again in case anyone missed it. Here’s my NED STARK vs. JAIME LANNISTER staring contest video. :)

Also, the banners are interesting. Made of wood?? They’re more like shields, I guess.

I also like that they’ve included a “without words” option. And they’ve moved the Targaryen words out from the centre of the dragon, putting them underneath instead. It seems that they’ve listened to a few of our complaints.

One of these days I might try a recipe or two from there. I can see those foods being really popular at renaissance fairs.

Note, the Targaryen “Banner” shield plaque is dark blue and red. Where’s the black. *facepalm*
What’s funny is if HBO had sold ALL the house sigils, from greater to lesser (Stark to Clegane to blackwood for example) in large 11x17in colored decal or sticker forms. You could practically make your own wooden shield plaque, if your craftsy. Cut/sand wood plaque, paint it correct corresponding house colors, adhere sigil, glaze over with protectant seal…hang!

Almost certainly no Blackfish in the coming seasons.

HBO’s guide to the series has characters like Olenna Tyrell and all the Greyjoys, but there is no Blackfish, so I’m guessing he’s not important enough to be included. An interesting character but he does little to advance the plot.

    Knurk,

About GRRM announcing that new POV.
Most people that check his “Not a blog” have already read all books available and many of those want to know who are the new POV in every book.
Why do you consider this a spoiler? You knew Baristan is still with Dany What does it matter if he is new POV? When you read GRRM books you can be certain only about one thing. That is certanty in twists and turns by author and no matter who is the person; POV or just some miserable piece of sorrow, high lord or peasant, everyone will live or die, noone is safe.

I look at it from perspective; How does that character look on this situation? Will we be able to learn something new from him? Does he have any inner doubts? Is he realy loyal or just without options?
To me, that is half the fun and waiting until relese is much more bearable.

    SJGIM,

Agreed, I don’t want the generic merchandise, I want to purchase replicas from the series. Besides what you mentioned, I would love to purchase:

    1.) Facsmile of Jaime’s coat
2.) Bonecrafted mugs like you see them drinking from.
    3.) Doreah
    4.) Anamitronic Ghost
    5.) Blue-eyed Zombie girl
6.) Joffrey/Tyrion automatic piggy bank, whenever you insert coins, Imp bitchslaps Joff
7.) Castle Black diorama (just like Sideshow merchandise), heck, a whole line of GoT Sideshow merchandise type stuff, dioramas, 12″ figures, busts, etc.
8.) Bookends (I have lots of books) and very few cool bookends. Not cheap either, but elaborate, highly detailed (Dancing Lessons with Syrio on one and Arya the other )
    9.) Valerion dagger replica
10.) Really awesome prints (20×36) of family portraits of the different houses.

This is the tip of the iceberg on the type of stuff I would buy, not the generic stuff for sale atm.

    Astalnar,

of course it’s not a big spoiler if you’ve read all the books, and I’m not really bothered by it but I just want to be surprised through which eyes I’m going to experience aDwD. What irked me the most about his blogpost is that a couple of months ago he himself warned that there are bound to be new readers and non-readers on his blog because of the show, therefore all spoilercomments would be removed from his site. And what does he do? He posts a big spoiler for new readers in a blogpost about the show (without warning)!!

    Wolfheart,

I don’t think it would be that hard either. I agree about the banners. A cloth one I could use to decorate in my room, not really as easy with what they have. I doubt I will end up getting one, but I haven’t yet decided. :(

Hopefully even if HBO does not produce the pins someone else will be given the right/be able to make and sell them.

    Tysnow,
I’m sure at some point a reproduction of the coat and dagger will come out ( and if not the coat than directions by fans on how to reproduce it yourself). Book ends will probably eventually come too, although I don’t know what they would be.

    Lex,
As has already been said, awesome video.
I too like that you are able to choose not to have the slogans, I would probably not include the words if I ordered one.

To all Canadians: I didn’t realize they are not yet sending shirts your way. I’m sorry. :( :( :(

I really hope they do have the Blackfish, even if it is a minor one line/scene role using an extra of the appropriate look to please the readers. He is a pretty great character to just ignore completely.

    Lex: That’s crazy. And disappointing.

Yeah, I ordered a different shirt out of disappointment (and the Stark Necklace) but I would buy 3 or 4 other shirts if they’d ship them.

    Phoenix_torn,

Maybe we have to start a“HBO, please ship House t-shirts all over the world” petition…

Yeah I guess my petition was a wee bit self serving. House T-shirts for all! (and miniature American flags for others…?)

Lex: I’m happy to see all these covers of the theme song. I was hoping that would happen, but wasn’t sure whether it would. I like that crazy metal dubstep one (probably the most original so far). And that one that Abyss just linked to sounds like Legend of Zelda!

And the fun goes on and on. Today we get the first cello version of the theme. It’s just the basic melody, but it sounds very nice.

    JedK,
I love the graphics! But it’s not “official”, as in HBO-sanctioned, is it? I noticed the absence of another Mormont who has already appeared prominently in the show. I admit that I’m not sure he’s been mentioned by name, however.
