A few weeks ago, Sky Atlantic hosted a Game of Thrones screening and Q&A in association with BAFTA. Present at the Q&A were Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Harry Lloyd, and Gemma Jackson. Sky has just posted the full video of the panel onto their website. The 24-min long Q&A contains some interesting insights from the cast, and some funny parts as well. Check it out.
Winter Is Coming: I love Harry Lloyd’s Russian accent. And I remember when we got the Russian report from the set in Malta. Funny to hear the story from Lloyd’s perspective. I also like how everyone on the panel seems to respect George and his work. Even if he isn’t as evil as they thought he would be!

Addy sure does seem to ramble and go off topic until it appears he completely forgot what point he was making to begin with. He looks uncomfortable to be there (maybe he’s quite a shy guy in real life?) but I absolutely love what he’s doing as King Robert Baratheon.
The funny thing I noticed about the guests (actors) right away was how neither one of them will survive the first season.

What funny guys. Harry’s accent is brilliant. Sean’s phone going off! And Ilyn Payne got a shoutout, he he! I love these kind of panels.

Sandra Gomes, lucky you! Wish they would have had one of these in the US, would have loved to see the first two eps with a bunch of fans and then get to hear the actor’s thoughts after. Maybe for season two!
BTW I’m pretty sure that the guy that asks the question about working with “kids and animals” is Werthead aka Adam Whitehead. Am I right, Adam, is that you?

GOT keeps its 500k ratings in the UK.
Isn’t this disappointing? Since last sunday was easter, this is like… technically a drop.
Edit: Still a strong number, though…

I’m know this has been said a thousand times over, but I can’t get over how brilliant Harry Lloyd is. Viserys was painfully boring and one-dimensional on the page to me, and yet the portrayal is electrifying. Cute, young, and fantastic presence- I really hope this guy gets the recognition and career boost he deserves.
uberstellarQuote Reply
I know but we all thought it was a bit weird that George didn’t annouce it on his update page as he said he would do. I think he still had to do the appendix and that’s why he didn’t write “done” immediately after his post on “not a blog”.

Thank you WiC!
Love this kinda stuff! Also love that Mark Addy is a reader!
“Lommy, you keep Weasel here.”
He grabbed the little girl by the hand and pulled her close. “What if the wolves come?”
“Yield,” Arya suggested.

Winter Is Coming,
I took a couple of photos, I can send them to you if you want!
It was quite surreal for me, I’m from Portugal and I had booked a trip to London weeks before this. You can’t imagine how it felt to be there, this things don’t happen to people like me!
And Sean said s*** quite a few times when his phone rang!!!
It was also pretty amazing to see the episodes on a big screen :)

Loved this panel. Too bad Sean dosn’t get to smile more as Ned, he’s got a great smile. Loved, too, Harry meeting up with a Russian fan of the books, reading the book is such a personal experience, it’s fun to realize that people all over the world are having that same personal experience and come to feel an “ownership” of the story and characters. That the fan offered to consult with the project made me laugh, isn’t that what we all do here on this site. We all have an opinion on how it should be done. Btw did anyone see Sean (Ned) sit on The Chair in the small counsel scene?

A small rise in ratings for ep 3!
It still has some climbing to do to make me trust a season 3 greenlight, but this sundays ratings seems to indicate that the show will at least stay above 2 mill for this season. Hoping for it to climb upwards to 3 mill by the end, and start off really strong in season 2 after word of mouth/DVD sales have added new viewers.

Really nice panel discussion (although these things always seem to be too short when you get to the end) and I laughed quite a lot at Harry’s imitation of the Russian fan that came up to him during the shoot. I could listen to these people going on for hours I think.

I am holding out desperate hope that by the end of this season HBO will decide to give the second book two seasons to be told, for a 20 episode commitment. This story cries out for expansion, not contraction! Follow just the Jon, Dany, Bran and Theon stories in the 2nd season, then in the 3rd season do the Arya, Tyrion, Sansa, Robb stories of Clash of Kings.

uberstellar,
Harry Lloyd is amazing for sure. I too thought Viserys was a bit feeble and unredeeming in the books.
However I think Lloyd’s performance simply goes beyond the page, inhabiting the dialogue with so much subtext that isn’t explicit in the books. It reminds me of the difference between reading Shakespeare quietly and aloud.
To be true, his performance humbles me and reminds me that perhaps I was ignorant of how much depth was probably there all along but just not on the page, like dark matter unobservable yet lurking at the shadow’s edge.

My opinion of Mark Addy just keeps going up. I liked him when he was first cast, but he’s exceeded my expectations on screen (he’s fast becoming one of my absolute favourites on the show), and this interview just shows how much respect he has for the books (he must have mentioned the books half a dozen times, including a definite recommendation that people should read them).
Also, loved Lloyd’s story about the Russian guy.
LexQuote Reply
I rofld three times here;
1. Lloyds anecdote about a russian fan.(I couldn’t help to imagine Tom Hanks as Viktor Navorski from Krakozhia, with an english dictionary in his hands, being like: “You, Game of Thrones, yes?”)
2. Addys Wilko Johnson impersonation.(Gotta say, though… I still think that Johnson is spot on for the role, although some criticized him.)
3. Beans cell phone problems, as well as his remark, that GRRM isn’t evil.
Overall, an awesome interview. :D

Lex,
Agreed. I was already really impressed by Addy’s performance on the show, but to see he’s such a big fan of the books is awesome.

Argilac the Arrogant,
As someone with occasional back problems, I think Addy may have a bad back, and his shifting about and looking uncomfortable seems to me like someone with back pain in an uncomfortable chair trying to find a place that doesn’t hurt to sit in.
And yes, the same thing occured to me that none of these ppl get out of the first season!

You were great! It was a good question! And very relevant, considering all the gripes we are having with not enough direwolf action. I was thinking it might be someone from here, when ‘fan sites’ were mentioned!

I very much hope that if in future seasons we get to see flashbacks of some of the earlier Targaryans that they give Harry Lloyd a chance to portray one of them.
Maester TcostQuote Reply
As my friend said to me a month ago and now Mark Addy…only “HBO money!” could make this happen! I have seen 3 episodes and i am awestruck with how true it follows the GRRM narrative. I was skeptical because my other fav book and HBO series (Sookie Stackhouse /True Blood) deviates from the books and i am ok with this.
But for ASOFAI series there is no need to improvise much (i.e. only in setting the back story); the story has so much complexity to work with…Love it!!!!

Adam Whitehead,
I think you were a great ambassador from the fans.
I have to say, I’ve been really impressed with Harry Lloyd throughout this process. He’s a great interview for the show, and I echo several people here when I say that he’d brought depth to the character that was on the page through his performance.
paulgudeQuote Reply
Harry Lloyd is extraordinary when he plays Viserys, and sooo charming and funny when he is “himself”. I love him more and more…
As for Sean Bean, it is always the same thing : each time I see him talking about his roles, I dislike him : he does’nt look very sincere in his praises nor sympathetic, and seems not to really like the movie/series he is on (I had the same impression for the LotR).
But when I see him on screen, he really shines, and fleshes his characters. His Ned Stark is very different from the picture I had in mind, but he is so moving and seems so real !
If not a very likeable person, Sean Bean is without a doubt a great actor !
AltaïrQuote Reply
Funny, I get exactly the opposite impression from Sean Bean (in both GOT and LOTR interviews).
LexQuote Reply
Hated the Mark Addy casting myself. Thought he was too short and all around just didn’t fit my image of Robert. But he has been unbelievable. Pretty sure he went from my least favorite of the casting decisions to my favorite. Just super impressed.
Tim SchafferQuote Reply
The part that made me laugh the most was Harry’s Russian fan experience. It’s so funny that the Russian fan expressed what most of the other fans do to!
You, Viserys, right? Very Good! You look good!
The Dothraki, eh, not so much..
I agree again with the comments about Harry bringing a depth and character to someone who was so two-dimensional, bland and boring in the book. It would be great if he got to play Aerys in flashbacks, all made up to look much older. He’s got a well proven crazy eyes look and great hysterical screaming/commanding. It’s not too hard to imagine him screaming at Jaime to “burn them all” the same way he screamed at Mormont to kill the Dothraki dogs.

I like the Russian part ;) brilliant.

That’s a great panel, would have been amazing to have been there. Love the way Sean and Mark are obviously buddies. Just too bad they both seem a bit nervous about interviews. Harry Lloyd came across very well though, the Russian encounter was very funny. Just read the “Russian report”, sounds like Harry was pretty accurate about what happened! Let me know if anyone starts a petition to show Aerys in flashback as played by Harry Lloyd. That would be awesome!
Adam Whitehead,
No, don’t worry, you came across brilliantly. You were a great rep for the fans! Btw, they didn’t get the camera on you until you were done introducing yourself so no worries about on-camera “gushing”.

Yeah, that cracked me up.
It should tell them something really… shame its too late now.
I also wasnt thrilled with Mark Addy as a choice for Robert whom i imagined physically more like a bit older Jason Momoa who just grew fat and ruined by drinking.
But Mark really, really nailed Robert totally and presented him in a really humane and true way.
Im not that crazy about Harry Lloyd or his role.
Mostly because the whole Daenerys part is so shortened that alleged depth of Lloyds Viserys is not actually seen on screen.
That is something Addy did for Robert in a really impressive volume.
Also, i kinda liked how he impersonated the guy playing Illyn Payne. Makes me feel a bit better about that casting decision.
