    Ashaïese,

So going off of what we know about decisions made in the series so far(sparse direwolf appearances, glossed over battle scenes), I’m going to make a prediction. No dragons tonight. Think about it. How easy would it be to see Dany go into the pyre, focus on the eggs a few times, hear three big cracks then as the scene fades out, the night fills with the song of dragons and we are left wondering what the hell just happened. Not only will new viewers puzzle over what is screaming from the fire, but Dany’s fate will be left up in the air until next season. If you think about it, it could actually make for a much more suspensful ending. We old-timers will be disappointed, but those that do not know the story will be intrigued.

From one of the previously posted interviews with the VFX creators for GoT:

“And there’s some work still in the proverbial pipeline: “The Dragons are still underway,” she says of the creatures seen toward the end of the story, “but they are going to be our swan song of an ending for VFX on Series One.”

“And perhaps something of an entry point for the recently announced Series Two”.

    Two predictions:

-Dany will not lose her hair. Don’t ask me why, but I just don’t see them going with a bald Dany. But if they do, I think it will be regrown by next season.

-The shot of the dragons will be very, very subtle.

I am also thinking that Dany will not lose her hair, nor will we see nurslings…but I am hoping that the sound effects at the birth as well as the visuals are top notch. That would ameliorate the limiting of the direwolves this time out.

Also expecting that Drogo’s death may be tear inducing. And wondering what exactly that slap scene with Cat entails!

After tonight, it will be countdown to the next book release…but my Sunday nights are going to be much less fun!

I can’t believe we are at the end of S1! Thank God, ADWD is coming out next month!

I did a re-read on the last Daenerys chapter last night, so I’m very interested to see how it will play out on screen. From the preview, I loved that Dany was in her wedding dress. I’m hoping to see the dragons breastfeeding! I think the non-book folks will be totally shocked. After all the death and tragedy that has happened so far, having the unexpected birth of 3 dragons will be a great ray of light and hope- anything is possible in this world.

    Lex,
I really hope they show the Red Comet (fire & blood) as well.

    Lex,

Yes, I doubt they will go as far as showing the dragons breast feed in details, my guess is we’ll see their heads rising from her arms or around her neck or whatever… . The longer the scene, the higher the risk. Very difficult to know, so much expectation and hype on this scene :-) All I’m asking for is that they’re well done and they have an interesting design. I also wonder if they will be recognisable (i.e. different color) so early. The details of what they will do is not that important to me.

    One more thing-

On a unrelated note, I’ve been so pleased with Emilia Clarke’s portrayal of Princess Daenerys. She has done such a wonderful job. I really hope we get a S3 as I can’t wait to see her “buy” the Unsullied and scream “Freedom!” HBO did such a great job casting but they really found a gem in Emilia.

Can’t wait for the final episode to begin, but will be soooo despondent when it ends.

What a great series! Even with all the changes, there simply wasn’t enough time to show it all, and I’m very pleased with what they’ve done. The only improvements would be to add more time and show even more. Ah well, I suppose that’s what we have the books for. :-)

I echo other’s comments about the casting. Excellent, and very happy with all of the cast.

Regarding the breast feeding of certain draconian creatures, I’m all for it. Lysa Arryn has already scarred me for life, why stop now? It would be cool. But as for necessity, I don’t think it is needed. It can be shown in S2 for sure. I just hope it boggles all the newbies brains like it did mine, thinking of all the exciting possibilities that could happen, and gets them chomping at the bit for S2.

    Yes……………………………………….

Jhogo spied it first. “There,” he said in a hushed voice. Dany looked and saw it, low in the east. The first star was a comet, burning red. Bloodred; fire red; the dragon’s tail. She could not have asked for a stronger sign.

I am really nervous about what the newbie reaction is going to be to tonight’s episode. I think it will be super-awesome-positive, but I have my doubts because HBO sold this as a no-magic kind of show. Dragon eggs hatching is the kind of plot twist/cliffhanger that fantasy fans love. But for people who don’t like fantasy to begin with, this could be seen as a nuking the fridge. I imagine that there will be a significant number of viewers who are completely turned off by the one-two punch of Ned’s death and the introduction of the Dragons.

    But maybe I’m just paranoid.

On a related note, what do we think the ratings are going to do? Probably go up, but by how much? And is anyone afraid we’ll lose viewers after Baelor?

I dont think that many. Any viewers who are going to stop watching the show all together simply because of 1 episode (admittedly and big and dramatic ending to one) weren’t that invested in the show to begin with. Anyone who had any worth while interest in the show will most likely be more hook because now they know they can’t necessarily predict what is going to happen. It should be the proper counterpoint to the unbelievable dread from the end of episode 9. If anyone has stuck with the season this far, they’ll be hooked for the next season and more.

I’m sure we’ll lose a few viewers from things like Ned’s death and the Dragons, particularly the prior. I’m not one of those fans who partiulary poop poop’s the people who were angry at Ned’s death, I think most of us who read the book felt the same way. Most story’s have the same basic storyline that people have become use to, so its understandable to feel as if they’ve been ‘tricked’ or ‘cheated’ epically given that Sean Bean did seem to be used to led many viewers in. I’m hopeful however that for every fan we lose this season that we gain two for the premier of season two. Word of mouth and people buying the DVD’s and tuning in for next season are going to be more of a determination on whether or not we get future seasons than what tonight’s ratings will be.

Hopefully the last two episodes this season cause a lot of viewers to convince friends to pick up the series. I know I’m looking forward to the last scene in tonight’s episode.

I am glad I have not read the book in ten years. I was able to ride that episode like a roller coaster and not be sidetracked by any twist and turns that should have been there. I don’t even care what was missing. (returning to lurking)

Loved the look in Sansa’s eye when she thinks of pushing Geoffrey off the edge and the way the hound stops her, the King of the North bit, Jon’s brothers saying the oath to stop him from flying, Arya’s fate and a sneak non-peek at Jaquen, and of course the scene with the pyre and the Dragons were great.

What an amazing episode! Emiliah Clarke was terrific in those final scenes, loved her dialogue with Mirri Maz Dur. The Old Bears speech accompanied with the shots of the Night’s Watch leaving for North of the Wall gave me goosebumps. And I also loved that we got some early glimpses of some of the shockers from book #2. Pycelle’s trysts with ladies of the night….and Lancel and Cersei!!! I totally didn’t expect them to sneak that one in there! King of the North was a great moment and the dragons actually looked pretty damn good! Thank god Dance with Dragons is coming out next month or I would be seriously deprived for the next 10 or so months….. :D

I was worried that they would end with Dany walking to the bier. But no, they did it just perfectly. And the dragons were just as they should be – small little creatures, with hearts of fire!

Now if we can only speed up time….In the meantime, I’ll be reading book two to four again, and then the new one. Just the things to take with me to the beach!

First time I am off work so I can watch in real time like everyone else.

    Quick thoughts.

Love the Dragon. Love D&D ended it with only the Dragon’s scream.

Dany looks like Mother of Dragons with her amazing womanly figure. It must be hard for Emilia Clarke to do that nude scene in broad daylight. She did a great job in the whole episode.

The Nightwatch’s march through the tunnel looks great and builds momentum for the final scene.

Love Jamie’s self loathing. It will be great in Season 2 and 3.

A bit short on Lannister’s war council but right up to the point.

D&D got everything in there in this final episode – SanSan, Sansa’s attempt on Joffrey, even Shaggydog and ghost. Can’t complaint much.

All in all, a great job!!!

    Dragons!!!!!!!
Missed the red comet though, but the dragons… Perfect. Jon’s scenes were spectacular as well, the moment he rides out of the Castle Black south AND north…. Just amazing. Sansa did the heads scene perfectly, you can just see it in her eyes that she’s looking but not watching (as is written in the book), Jack Gleeson is an amazing actor, Arya’s so cute with short hair (and I’m still an Arya/Gendry shipper, she’ll be old enough for him in the 5th, 6th or 7th season :P),
Just breathtaking! Thank you D&D for bringing this spectacular story to the screen :)

I don’t know how I’d survive these 10 months if it wouldn’t have been for A Dance with Dragons. Let the first countdown begin.

Episode owned!!!! Another year for season 2? Ahhh. How bout some casting news? Dragons looked so great!!! Every single scene hit the exact right emotional chord. Best episode of the series! Episode 5 on has been so fucking great! I can’t believe the show lived up to my insurmountable expectations. And three weeks till Dance with Dragons. Gonna be the first book I read where I imagine the actors from the show in those roles. Thank you everyone involved.

David The Grey: Thanks Mike – I see AGoT and ADWD out there, but it was the other books (#2-4) that I am having trouble with. After seeing your note I went and searched again, thinking maybe I had missed them, and came across used versions of AFFC audio CD going for $241.00 and up!!!! It seems that these are older versions, was hoping that someone might know if they’re getting re-released at a more affordable price? I’ll keep looking!

I bought it from Audible for 9.99$ a piece except for “AFFC” because that one isn’t read by Roy Dotrice (but ADWD will be read by him again). Hope that helps…
