    Quick question-

Why is this show named ‘Baelor?’ I mean, I read the books and I know what it’s referring to .. and I realize that the scene we’ve all been dreading happens on the steps of the sept of ‘Baelor,’ but it seems like an weak title to me. It’s been awhile since I read the books, maybe you guys can enlighten me as to the major significance?

Really looking forward to the last two episodes all season, and those who have read the books all know why. I have to say I don’t think we’ll get a ToJ scene, and I for one am not overly disappointed about that. From what we’ve seen so far this season they haven’t done one flashback as for so I don’t expect them to start doing a lot of them. However from one of the pre-season previews we did see a fraction of a second of what sort of looked like Sean Bean going through Ned’s brother’s fate, so hopefully I’m wrong about the ToJ thing.

Tonight’s episode will be the best yet I`m sure, and really will show what the series is all about.

Yes open chat, thanks WIC for getting this rolling. I am dying for this episode but since I am in Alaska I will be one of the last people in America watching the show, although I think Hawaii is an hour behind me, so ha, ha Hawaii I will see this before you do, lol.

Man this show has been such a fun ride and while I have enjoyed every bit of it the season stands out in two segments for me. Episodes 1 thru 4 were heavy on exposition and light on action, which is typical of all Fantasy as there is a whole world and cast of characters to get to know. I thought all of these episodes were good, but was wanting more and then we got hit with ep. 5 thru 8 and they took the show from good to great in a big way. The earlier episodes had set the table and then we were able to start the feast and what a feast it has been, even if we have to share it with the crows, get it Feast and Crows, lol and the next two episodes have some of the most amazing scenes coming up, yes!

I am going to dash to the boards tonight right after I watch to see what the reaction is and I am going to be really interested in the non-readers response. I am going to put in a big spoiler here so please people if you have not read the books don’t highlight this segment, but if you are a reader let me know what you think. How will they handle Ned’s death and how will the show handle it, will we see the head roll in all of its gory horror? Will they be able to show us both Arya’s and Sansa’s reactions? I have to say if they end the episode with Ned’s decapitated head staring at us, while gory, that would be truly awesome, as with that one stroke Martin announced to the world that he wasn’t going to play by the conventional rules and keep major characters alive. While I have found it hard to deal with at times I really respect this about him as a writer and it makes the books unique.

Well fellow fans we are in for a rare treat tonight so gird your loins because it is going to get really interesting.

Yeah, I can’t wait to see his reaction. Especially since he said he may videotape himself watching the episode. Although I actually think he’ll be more upset by Drogo’s death, he’s very “team Dothraki” right now.

The COLLECTIVE howls of all the readers and mostly the non-readers.
This is like the moment in Fight Club.

And it does not even include the even more delicious howls after the red wedding.

Eh eh, I’ll be watching him too. If he does film himself this is the best episode to do it for the firt time, I don’t think he’ll be able to sit still :-) I don’t think Drogo is going to die tonight, in the new reader’s view, this episode will leave a hint that he will get healed by the Maegi. Drogo dies next episode

I’m thinking this ep will easily be the best so far.

Also I’m looking forward to Paco’s tweets, as always. ;)

    Jeda,

Well, Drogo kind of dies twice. The first scene we will see him succumbing to the wound and falling off his horse. Also, it will be obvious that something has gone horribly wrong with the ritual. I’d say it’ll be more of a “hope” than a “hint”. As in, we can hope Drogo is alive but it doesn’t seem likely, and Dany might well be dead too. Anyway cliffhanger city!

It’s like the Wiki page on Baelor I says: “Some remember Baelor as a great and holy man … Others regard him as a weak, simpering fool, prone to hallucinations and bad decisions brought about by excessive zealotry.” Seems pretty appropriate to me.

Hmm lemme throw out a few predictions here.

Arya on the sly in Flea Bottom will steal a hot pie. Hot Pie will chase her and do something to land him with Yoren

Either we see Syrio’s head on a spike, or possibly in chains below the Keep where ned is. Grasping at straws with this one, but I’m hoping that the comment Rose gave me about how a resolution to Syrio will come sooner than I think.
    .
The Greatjon will take Roose Bolton’s place and lead the attack on Tywin

A certain Dothraki tent will come alive with shadows.

I’m going to attenmpt to be positive and predict that we will see Jon taking Ghostwith him when he leaves the Wall (if that happens this episode)

Lastly, we get a great sexposition scene between Osha and maester Luwin on the tabke in Winterfell’s great hall. They’ll give a recounting of all the past Stark Lords from Brandon the builder to the present. ;P

True enough, but this is something that is much clearer to readers than viewers at this point; just think it’s an odd title for something so obscure to anyone else– unless they make several references to it tonight, still feels like an odd move to me.

I almost feel sorry for the newbies out there. This episode will feel like getting blind sided by a truck out of nowhere. On the other hand they’ll finally understand GoT’s main theme: Shit just got real.

Developing an ulcer from the anticipation, anyone care to suggest (with obv spoiler tags) what the final scene will be like? A cliffhanger? If so which one? Will we see a King in the North scene? If so that’s my bet.

What I expect from this episode:

The essentials: THE TWINS and the bridges!!… and in the opening credit! and a good walder Frey. A rather good batle of the WW (to state the obvious), with the announcement at the end that it was a ‘diversion’ and Robb wins that battle, although that spoiler is in the trailer so we know he does, we just don’t know if Tywin is going to realise it tonight. The fight with Mormont, proving his point that a Westeros armor makes you slower but keeps a man alive. Jamie’s capture (again from the trailer we know it happens tonight), but hopefully it won’t happen before he slays many. Obviously Ned’s final scene, but what is important for me is to see the shock on Cirsei and Varys’ face knowing the impact of that mistake. My guess is the closing scene will be a screaming Arya taken away by Yoren

The nice to have: More lines for the Hound (if not I’m sure there will be in ep10), a scene with Gregor. Demonic images dancing in the tent with Drogo, only a nice to have since we know they don’t focus on effects. Since we know Varys go down in the dungeon again, maybe a chance to have some of Ned’s personal thoughts in that dungeon

Agree, it’s somewhat cryptic for newbies. I just took it as a little nod to the readers. I think it works to set the scene, anyway; this is the most momentous event of S1 after all. Since there’s a little extra thrown in for us readers, it works doubly for me.

There are a lot of people that have already figured out that Ned is going to die. Buuuuut… Martin (and I assume D&D will keep this) throws in that misdirection about him going to the Wall. I’m betting that a lot of those people will start thinking that maybe he will get away and join up with Jon. I know I thought that while reading. Only to have my hopes crushed. My guesses as to how they will handle this episode…

    Episode 9:
    – Robb will cut his deal with the Freys and go on to capture Jaime Lannister, giving viewers the false hope that Ned can be saved.
    - Jon will have his little talk with Maester Aemon, and attempt to desert the Night’s Watch. He will get stopped by his friends, who recite the oath back to him
    - Drogo will fall from his horse, and the Dothraki storyline will end this week with Dany falling to the ground as she goes into labor and The tent filling with shadows
    - Ned will die, but we will get a glimpse of Sansa and Arya’s reactions, as well as Cersei’s. I think the episode will end with Yoren grabbing Arya.

Predictions for next week, episode 10:

    - Robb is declared King in the North
    - Joffrey shows off Ned and the Septa’s heads to Sansa
    - Dany awakens to find Drogo catatonic and to find that the Khalasar has abandoned her
    - Jon Snow will receive Longclaw from The Old Bear
    - Rickon and Bran will hear the sad news from Maester Luwin about having to find a stonemason who knew Lord Stark :(

I’m actually looking forward to the funeral pyre scene in episode ten more than anything else. ;)

    Jeda,

I always figured that drogo would die in this espisode. Don’t the dragon eggs need time to incubate before they hatch? I do recall there was some time in the books between Drogo’s death and the dragons hatching, which is supposed to be the last scene in the show. So, I figured, timeline wise, drogo would die and the maegi would get burned in this episode, leaving time for all the post- Drogo death political consequences and dragon hatching to be hashed out in the final episode. But, I could be wrong. We shall see in less than two hours! woooooot!

I suspect it’s meant as a hidden spoiler so that anyone who has read the book automatically knows that Ned buys it during this episode. Folks who haven’t read the books won’t be clued in or even feel like they’re being left out.

Jo, I think all your predictions are spot-on except the ones about Jon deserting and getting Longclaw. You have those reversed. Jon gets the blade from Mormont for saving his life, so that will probably happen in this episode. Jon doesn’t desert until after Ned’s death and since that likely won’t happen until the end of ep 9, we won’t get that bit of Jon’s story until next week.

I have done the same thing. I still haven’t read AFFC yet! A few months before GoT started, I started re-reading the first 3 books, with the hopes of starting AFFC just before book 5 came out. I’ve been savoring each book. I’m currently on the Tyrion chapter shortly after the Red Wedding (which, btw, has lost none of the shock upon my second reading). So far I think I’ve managed to avoid most of the AFFC spoilers.

Tonight’s episode will be awesome. I’m worried about mywife’s (non-reader) reaction, though, as she is attached to Ned. I am hoping that here interest in Arya’s and Dany’s stories will be enough to keep her watching after tonight.

Yep I read GOT when it first came out in 1996, wow 15 years, and although I have read it several times since I have not read since I found out it was coming out on HBO so I wouldn’t get mired in all the little details and I think that has really helped me just enjoy the show for the show and not get too caught up in some of the stuff that is different.

I did read FFC right when it came out six years ago even though I knew all about the split, primarily because I had been waiting four years since SOS and also because Martin said that since he split it DWD was almost half written so it wouldn’t take that long for him to finish. I figured at worst two years and now here we are 6 years later, lol.

I just reread SOS and FFC to prepare myself for DWD and what a joy to read them again as I hadn’t done that in a few years. I am also going to reread GOT as soon as the episode ten is in the books. But will wait on COK until after season two ends.

Man I am going to be sad when I can’t watch this show for a year, but what a great ten week run.

Also going to miss my new friends on this these threads but will come back and post about DWD when I finish it.

Those of you on the East coast you are almost done watching the show so I bet you are knee deep in awesomeness right now, argh, hate waiting. Still have a little more than 3.5 hours to wait.

A question:. Now that s01 is almost over, does anyone think that the title A Clash of Kings will somehow figure in Season 2. I doubt they’ll call the series ‘A Clash of Kings’ next year, but maybe a title in the opening credit or something… Maybe it will be a line in an episode or just maybe it’soing to stay in the book…. Any thoughts or knowledge on the matter? It’s not that important but I must say, I’m a little curious.

Help me, Help Me, fellow wic’ers!! OMG I am not even twittering as I try to watch the show, because I am having this screeching match with my husband, about Theon, Bran and Rickon. In the future. I have to spoil it all.

I was talking about how in the future, Theon hides Bran and Rickon in the crypts, and then kills the baker’s boys in their stead, and quickly gets rid of the bodies, esp. as old Nan was looking curiously at what were supposed to be Bran’s legs, and were way too formed. Andhe allows Bran and Rickon to escape.

He insists Theon is a complete jerk who killed those two because he was embarassed he couldnt find Bran and Rickon.

I say he’s wrong, Theon is trying to help with what he can, and is giving mercy to Bran and Rickon, to try and be nice to his foster family, as nice as he can be while still not getting in trouble.

We are ready to strange each other. Help!!! Who remembers this part in the future? And do you think Theon tried to help Bran and Rickon hide?

This episode lacked the quality pacing of last episode. In particular, I thought the Tyrion story dragged. I know they can’t do a huge battle on a limited budget, but it would have been nice to get a shot of some horses charging through the woods. It seemed anticlimatic to have Jaime dragged out and add, “O, BTW friends, we won.”

Still, the end left me feeling sick.

I’m done with this show. It’s tiresome watching something week end and week out just to see the guys you root for constantly punished and those that punish going about as they please. There is no incentive to continue to tune in when you cannot root for anyone because you know the bad will always prevail. It’s been a struggle up to this point and tonight is just the straw that broke the camels back. Having never read the novels I decided to look up spoilers for whats been written and judging by who’s alive in the latest novel and those that aren’t I’d say this series is about run of the mill for Martin who appears to have a bit of a sadist fetish.

I haven’t read the books, so I was completely shocked to see Ned die. My sister, her husband, and my husband were as well. I wish I had at least looked up spoilers before seeing that, because it was too unexpected, and too heartwrenching. I loved Ned more than ANYONE. :(:(:( I also really liked King Robert. Another one of my favorites is Drogo, and apparently, his end is coming soon. :(:(:( WTF?????!!!!!! Can any of the readers tell me if the “good” guys EVER win? Is this just pure tragedy, and us having to endure Joffrey’s disgusting looking face for seasons? I FUCKING hate that boy. Other characters I love are Arya, Robb, Jon, and Tyrion. Please tell me, do any of them die??? I’d rather know then be shocked and heart broken again. I intend to read the books, I was just waiting until the show was over, so that I would have no expectations and not end up dissapointed with the way the show was made. I really fo love it, but I hate seeing all the best people die. :( and do they ever end up telling us the story about Jon’s mother???? I wanted to know so badly! This next comment is less important, of course, but I need to say it…. It’s too bad we never got to see a sex scene with Sean Bean on HBO. That would’ve been awesome. :):):) So, if anyone could answer my questions, I’d be so grateful! Thanks!!!

One of the cool things is that some of the characters who you currently view as bad, kind of end up as good. Kinda. Define good. Well, the story is really interesting! Brienne and Davos show up next season. They’re good! And they don’t Reeeeally die. To a point. Kinda.

    Sandra,

Hi Sandra. To me that’s the power behind these books (and the show), it always surprises you, so it’s refreshing from the stories where the good guys always win and you also know when they’ll win. Of course if the vicious characters always won, then it would also get repetitive and the effect of surprise would also disappear. So to answer your question, good guys don’t always lose no. They lose some, they win some, you just can never predict when. The beauty behind this is when they win, you’re really happy! Besides, you never really know who’s good and who’s bad for sure (not mentionning it’s a concept that often depends from the point of view). For Jon’s mother, you can’t have all the answers in season 1, when the whole story spans accross 7 books (maybe a little more).

Yes, it’s worth it. I can’t tell you that by now (through a Feast for Crows) all is well. There is still a lot of story to go. Things will get sadder. There will be more blood. Sometimes it’ll make you cry. Sometimes it’ll make you pump your fist. But, damn, it’s worth sticking around. Of the four favorites you mentioned, three of them are alive and well as of the end of book four. I would tell you which ones, but believe me, not knowing is better

Also, regarding Jon’s parentage, part of the fun is figuring that out. There are a number of very well-publicized theories on other sites. In truth, I would love to answer your questions plainly and put your anxieties to rest, but I don’t want to answer completely, even with spoiler tags. Sandra,

A Song of Ice and Fire is much like real life. Being good doesn’t get you ahead; being smart and ruthless does. Usually. Or at least, more so.

Of course, labelling people as “good” and “bad” is pointless. Ned was nominally good, but he also sacrificed everything for his honour, and look where it got him and his family.

King Robert is usually considered a good guy, but he was also an abusive, alcoholic adulterer. And not a very good king, by all accounts. Almost every major character is similarly somewhere between good and bad.

For those we think the show is all about misery and punishment for being good, you are wrong. Yes the villains will win, and yes the heroes will win. There were times reading the books when the villains won that I throw the book at the wall yelling in anger and frustration. And there were parts were the heroes won where I screamed, “DAMN RIGHT, HELL YEAH THATS HOW ITS DONE MOTHER-F’ERS.” And I realized it made the heroes victories that much sweeter when I knew they faced challenges that threatened them. So yes, expect a great deal of pain to come, but also expect a great deal of joy. And enjoy the ride cause the story only get wilder from here on.
