Quick Hits: GRRM on casting, Dance discussion, Emmy reactions
By Winter Is Coming on in Books, Casting, News, Press, Speculation.
  • George R. R. Martin has been on the road, doing book signings for A Dance with Dragons. Which means no casting clues from him, but according to some tweets, he revealed that more “big roles” have been cast and that the actors are in negotiations with HBO at the moment. GRRM hopes they will be announced soon, possibly at Comic-Con in San Diego.
  • Speaking of the Comic-Con, the Game of Thrones panel will be this Thursday at 3PM PT/6PM ET. Lena Headey has just been added to the panel. And there are rumors that Sean Bean may join as well.
  • With 5 days past since A Dance with Dragons was published, more and more folks are finishing it up and taking to the web to discuss the book. Our Dance thread continues to be active. If you are still reading (like me), there are some places you can go to discuss the book chapter-by-chapter without fear of spoilers, such as Westeros.org and Tower of the Hand. Also this Reddit page has done a good job of setting up some chapter-by-chapter ADWD discussion, which I have been enjoying perusing as I make my way through the book.
  • Another interesting bit of news that George revealed at one of his book signings: they’re working on an actual version of “The Rains of Castamere” for the show.
  • Lots of reaction to the Emmy nominations, here are a few noteworthy ones pertaining to Thrones: People Mag thinks Dinklage should win the Emmy, Mo Ryan reacts to the noms, so does James Poniewozik, and Jace Lacob has a list of Emmy snubs.
  • The popular Sword and Laser podcast recently had Dothraki language creator David J. Peterson on as a guest, where he talked about Dothraki, natch.
  • The American Prospect has an interesting roundtable discussion of why the books and the series have really seemed to catch on amongst American politicos.
  • Kit Harington was interviewed by the Sydney Morning Herald talking about his role as Jon Snow. Ignore the part where it says that he will have more scenes with Sean Bean in season two, which is almost certainly an error on the part of the interviewer.
  • James Cosmo (Jeor Mormont) confirms he will be heading to Belfast soon to film season two in this impromptu street interview. He also reveals is an avid archer, perhaps David & Dan can put that to use in the show?
  • Martin was recently interviewed by James Hibberd for EW.com where they talk about the books and the show. A very interesting read, especially when Martin talks about the changes he liked and disliked in the show, but beware of spoilers for later books in the series, including even Winds of Winter.

Yay! The Rains of Castemere! Missed that one on the news.

And hopefully D&D won t see the interview with James Cosmo, they could add some Lord Mormont sexposition into season 2 (with one of the Craster s wives, for example) :D

The mentioned interview with GRRM is one of the best I’ve read lately. Spoilers like these are bareable and whole conversation shows Martin both as book author and TV producer in very fresh, in my opinion, way.

I was reading some comments of GRRM in the EW interview about how they just
don’t have the budget for the Battle of Blackwater and it struck me that maybe this would be a good chance for people to show further support for the show and contri-
bute to some kind of crowd-sourced fund to ensure that the show has battle set-pieces that go some way in doing the books justice even if they are slightly smaller scale.
Also I think GRRM could maybe even match what the fans raise since I’m sure between the show and his books he’s making pretty good bank right now. I person-
ally don’t have the time or the resources to set up something like this but I’m sure there are some here who do. Hell, maybe this site could set up something.
Anyway, since I haven’t seen anyone else put that out there I thought it might be something to think about. And if anybody takes up the challenge, I have 50 bucks waiting for them.

HAHA HBO gets way too much of my money as is. They won’t receive a penny more.

Well, maybe on blu-ray sales. I’ll show my support that way.

I’m pretty sure it won’t be the end of the world if we don’t get the blackwater battle in all its glory. The show’s strength lies in its acting and narrative.

If the blackwater is just scenes of Tyrion yammering on from behind the walls, next to trebuchets, then that’ll be cool enough.

tysnow, this idea was discussed at some length in a previous thread and Vince Gerardis, one of the producers, left a comment saying he will work with HBO to see if they can set something up. I’m still not convinced it will happen, both for legal and practical reasons, but there is at least an official attempt at seeing what, if anything, can be done.

Fans donating money so that we can get a full-scale Blackwater Battle? That’s just wrong! If HBO really wanted to make GoT the most visually-mind-blowing series ever to occur on tv (which including ‘epic’ battles would mean), then they easily could do so. And it would be an investment that would pay itself right back in DVD/Bluray sales and next-season’s subscriptions. The fact that they don’t plan to include those scenes in Season 2 (Season 1 I could still understand, but hey, now they know the series is a succes) just means that they are not willing to invest. Anybody thinking of donating something to HBO to make this happen suffers from a severe fan-feaver in my not-so-humble opinion…

  25. GrzebykK
    Posted July 18, 2011 at 4:37 am | Permalink

    Tar Kidho,

I don’t deny it is a fever, a greed, an obsession.
I think about donation only when given choice: battle vs. no battle. Well, it is HBO, but they are focused on making money not making my (on some other people’s) dreams true. So if fans are asked for participation, I wouldn’t refuse.
It’s intresting though, if potential donors would be included in credits :)

GrzebykK: Well, it is HBO, but they are focused on making money not making my (on some other people’s) dreams true.

Well, there’s a lot of people who invest more than they own in producing small independant movies (what do you call that, ‘indy’?), theatre, music, etc. Those people really take risks to produce something they love. If HBO decide to delve deeper into their funds than they normally do, the risk they take is minimal, since succes is for 99% guaranteed. So I repeat, if they want to create something extraordinary, they already have the means to do so. If you and other fans have some money to spare, I think there’s much better causes to spend it on then to invest it in a company like HBO! But yes, that’s just my opinion… And if something is set up by HBO to collect money from the fans, I’ll definitely not donate, but would gladly look at some battles in the next season(s) ;-)

Btw, more importantly: I’m quite worried that they are still discussing contracts so close to the filming date. Weren’t most roles announced earlier last year? I hope this doesn’t mean they couldn’t find agreements with some of their preferred candidates for the big roles… Luckily there is ComiCon to take away a bit of my worries!

But regardles of what he said, I still wouldn’t be surprized if GRRM finds just enough time to give us one more Casting Clue before he leaves for CC. (for a smaller actor/character most likely)

    Tar Kidho,

They can film tons of scenes with the already available actors with the addition of extras or new actors for small roles:
Winterfell stuff before Theon captures it.
Arya’s travels before their group is attacked on the road.
    Most of King’s Landing scenes.
Some of the stuff in Renly’s camp.
Some of the stuff beyond the Wall.

They can push the filming of Dragonstone and Iron Islands stuff until they cast who they really want.

The show is very popular, so the actors’ agents are probably trying to get the best possible deals for their clients. Before the first season it was the “new fantasy show on HBO”, now it’s “a critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated show that everyone’s talking about”.
I forgot another bunch of scenes they can film – Dany stuff in the desert and that abandoned city.

    Alexander Dubrovsky,

Exactly what I was going to say. People are so freaked out about casting – there is so much they can do! And now they have a Brienne so there’s even more they can do. It’s a long shoot, and I’m sure they’ll have the other rolls cast in plenty of time. I’m frustrated because I want to KNOW, but I’m not frustrated because I think they’re cutting it too close.

Plus, I’m sure many roles are done or nearly done deals. They’re just not announcing yet because the ink isn’t dry or they’re waiting to make it a bigger deal. Everything will be fine!

Actually the risk would be great. In this case, “success” would hinge on an increase in revenue equal(or better) in ratio to the rise in cost.

say they sink in an extra 50-60 million just for the blackwater…would they really see that much extra revenue? would the number of ppl watching the show triple simply because of one 5-minute scene? would the DVDs sell that much more or would the ppl that buy them be mostly the same ppl that would’ve bought it anyway?

that’s a very risky gamble and the odds of the investment paying off are closer to 1% than 99%.

GrandmaFunk: say they sink in an extra 50-60 million just for the blackwater…would they really see that much extra revenue?

The cost for the whole 1st season was around 60 Million. I think with about 10 Million more for SFX we will get a decent season 2. As said previously I think they should consider investing in the MASSIVE engine from WETA, which makes arranging huge battles a lot more cost effective.
I don’t know how much it would cost to get a team of miniature builders on the team, but I love the miniatures from the LOTR and once you have built them you can shoot the place from every angle and use it in every following season…

The main problem is that the show grows in scale from every season (I think of AFFC and 1st half of ADWD as 1 Book) and I think in the longrun it would be wise for HBO to invest in the show in the longterm and not on a per season basis. This wouldn’t be that risky, if the DVD sales skyrocket as much as I think they will and will save a lot of money in the longrun.

Regarding GRRM’s comment about Marillion and the butterfly effect his fate will cause in ASOS, yesterday I thought of a solution.

    Mord.
Have Lysa summon Mord to open up the Moon Door (since in the show you need strong men to roll a giant wheel-mechanism to open it, so she can’t do it on her own like in the book). Then when Littlefinger kills her, he blames Mord, who is too flabbergasted and stupid to defend himself. Eventually, you’llhave the same thing – Littlefinger having a scapegoat for the Lords Declarant with confessions extracted from torture. Wether he’s a singer or a turnkey, doesn’t really matter for the big picture.
Sadly, though we’ll miss on the scene when Marillion tries to rape Sansa and she’s saved by Brune but for a split second thinks of the Hound. Then again, San-San was butchered in the show, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

  61. stevelabny
    Posted July 19, 2011 at 8:03 am | Permalink

    Rinso,

Or, since Marillion was never named on the show… just say that was a different singer. and introduce Marillion in S3. If I’m remembering wrong, change the new ones name. For bonus points make them brothers. Twins even. Use the same actor.

    None of this matters.

Wasn’t Marillion supposed to be a good singer? The guy at King’s Landing sucked ass. I don’t see it as a problem introducing a new singer. I don’t even recall that they gave the singers name in the show.

Saw Lea Seydoux in “Midnight in Paris” last night, Nina definitely needs to cast her as Ygritte. I think she’s going to be the next Cate, Liz, Audrey, Helen but French instead. She needs the attention to push her career (get noticed), and what better than a juicy demanding role in one of the best tv shows ever.

    Mike Chair,

I’ve had it. This lack of new casting news is excruciating!

Yea, and six days till filming commences, and only one two casting announcements, well three if you accept that Asha thread. There are like a dozen big juicy roles left.

    Mel
    Stannis
    Davos
    Ygritte
    Crastor
    Edmure
    Gilly
    Balon
    Victarion
    Roose
    Pod
    Jaq

Then smaller ones, cameo’s and introductions for season 3.

    Cressen
    QH
    Strong Belwas
    Hoster
    Mance
    Xao
    Rattleshirt

and it goes on and on.

Rains is the first thing on my list of “Things I really want on the show but half-expect to get cut” so I’m pretty ecstatic right now.

I don’t understand how shooting can begin in a few days and we still don’t know who’s playing half of the roles.

    This is crazy!

Why can’t GRRM simply change the name of the Mago character in the Winds of Winter, so that there is no conflict?

    shadallion,

He should also insert dialogue explaining that Marillion was at the Eyrie following a brief trip down to King’s Landing before returning to find a good plastic surgeon to sew his tongue back in so that he’d be around for the events in book three.

That would resolve that conflict, so he should definitely write it in.

    shadallion,

Or, even more simply, the show runners can change his name when he shows up later in season 6 or whatever – he’ll just be one of the Dothraki who wanted to claim his rape rights, and a good pal of one of the Khals (Jhaqo? Pono?) that split off from Drogo’s khalasar.

Mike Chair: I want Ariel from the Little Mermaid as Ygritte. The Beast as Stannis. And, I’m definitely going to want Shrek for Tormund Giantsbane if we get to Season 3.

I think those three would all be perfect!!

So Sean Bean has been cast as Snow White’s father in the 2012 film, Snow White and the Huntsman. What’s more — Ian McShane has been cast as one of the Dwarves.

Really? I’ll give you that the Beast has the persona of harsh unbending ruler down pat, but he just has too much hair. I can’t picture him as Stannis.

    shadallion,

Or you know the TV show adds a Khal named Dago or whatever, it doesnt really matter .

The same with Marillion, just add a new bard in his place its not as if people would remember Marillion in the third season when he reappears.

Does anyone know if there’s a place to see that GoT comic-con panel live if you’re not in San Diego?

Is it going to be webcast or podcast live anywhere?

That is incorrect. Yes Sean has been cast in an upcoming film about Snow White as the King, but it is not the one with Ian McShane. Believe it or not there are two films coming out within three months of each other about Snow White (March 2012 and June 2012). Sean is in the un-named one coming out in March by Relativity films with Julia Roberts playing the Queen. The one in June is a Universal production with stars such as Ian and also Ray Winstone.

I also find it hard to believe that Sean would appear on the Comic Con panel for Thrones. His role is done so why would they have him there for promoting next season? Also…..getting Sean to appear at any type of PR is like pulling teeth. Guess we’ll find out on Thursday!

There are usually live feeds or at least video clips of these panels shown on the Comic Con website or other similar sites so hopefully we’ll be able to see the GOT team!

Check out this link. EW looks like it’s going to feature some live feed and also interviews in it’s celebrity lounge so it’s a possibility that GOT might get featured (click on video)…..
