Casting Speculation

Casting Ygritte

I delayed putting up this casting post weeks ago, since they’d already given us a handful of solid casting announcements (Brienne, Stannis, Melisandre), and it felt like we were about to get a ton more.

Alas, that has not materialized (a possibly-renamed Asha and a nonexistent Lannister don’t really count), and so we are forced to speculate away! We will stop speculating when the full season two cast list is announced. (At which point we will then begin speculating on season three!)

Today is Ygritte! (Yes, okay, the picture is slightly spoiler-y, but … it’s by far the best I could find, and really, more of a teaser than a spoiler.) Ygritte is a “flame-kissed” wildling woman, scrappy and opinionated. She’s described by Tower of the Hand as “short and bandy-legged with a round face, small hands, a pug nose, with shaggy bright red hair. Her teeth are crooked.” Rumor has it she may be more than just a Jon Snow stab victim—she could even be a love interest! More than likely this role will be filled by a young unknown actress, but possibly one of our suggestions will inspire. Let’s take a look at some of House Gatewatch’s candidates:

Alice Henley, 30, who had long been my first choice for the role based on acting chops alone. The fact that she’s more than a few years older than Kit Harington might take her out of the running (and we’re reasonably certain she already auditioned for Melisandre), as well as the fact that she fixed her teeth… but in my view she’s got the skills to do something like this. Henley has tremendous range, and can play innocent, sleazy, sexy, drunken, addicted, arrogant, righteous… basically you name it. Her most impressive performances, for me, were in EastEnders and My Almost Famous Family. She’s still my pick.

Léa Seydoux, 28, who memorably stole scenes in which she spoke nary a word in the Russell Crowe Robin Hood reboot, as well as a tasty part in Inglourious Basterds. Looks-wise she’s nearly perfect, though we’re not certain she can do a Wildling accent that doesn’t sound in part French. Like Henley she’s getting a little up there in Kit Harington love interest years, but in my view would certainly be a viable candidate. Her range could come into question, as happens with most “model / actress” sorts, but I would certainly give her an audition, just to see.

Karen Gillan, 25, is a Scottish actress probably most famous for playing Amy Pond in the Doctor Who series. Also an “actress / model” (and let’s face it: you’re really not going to find too many quirkily attractive actresses who haven’t modeled once or twice in their lives), Karen seems to have an open schedule (Edit: will soon be filming more Who!), having just wrapped We’ll Take Manhattan. She’s been acting professionally since she was a young teen. I personally haven’t seen her, but by all accounts she was excellent in Who, and can play naivete as well as foot-stomping irritability with panache.

Karoline Herfurth, 27, is a German actress with all the right looks, known mostly for her German film work and for playing a young vampire named Lina in We Are The Night, as well as some rather racy films (Girls On Top and Girls On Top 2) (also named Lina) (there’s a theme here). She did have a short but memorable turn in the acclaimed Kate Winslet film, The Reader. Her accent could be a problem, unless they decide to make some of the wildlings Germanic. Still, I have always seen Ygritte as having a thick accent of some sort—certainly not a traditional or posh English.

Bonnie Wright, 20, is of course best known for playing Ginny Weasley in all eight H.P. films. Her range immediately comes into question, but to be fair… she hasn’t been seen in many other roles. Her schedule is packed right now, however, as she is filming both The Philosophers and Geography of the Hapless Heart. Plus, we’ve already got Nat Tena and David Bradley, which could fulfill our Potter requirements. On the other hand… if Wright has the skills for someone like Ygritte, I can’t think of a better way for her to break out of her innocent mold. Talk about shattering preconceptions, eh?

Hannah Murray, 22, a popular English actress from the Skins television series (the British one, not the horrible American version). She garnered some acclaim for the 2010 film Chatroom. While she doesn’t strike me as especially athletic, Murray has a pretty good range of facial tricks, as well as (I would say) having Ygritte-esque teeth. Her schedule seems open, having just wrapped Wings and Little Glory, with nothing as yet on the horizon. Assuming she can be trained to move confidently with a spear or bow in hand, Murray might do well here.

Lily Cole, 23, an English actress and another Doctor Who vet, is another popular (and probably dead-on) choice for the role. Her rather distinct features (her face could be described as both “unique” and “pretty”) would make her a stand-out as Ygritte—an excellent choice. However, her plate is extremely full, is an actress “on the rise,” so to speak, and is moving into feature films; a small-ish role like Ygritte, while plum, could be seen as a slight step down (or at least sideways). Cole is about to begin shooting Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Ian McShane.

Someone suggested Emma Watson (speaking of Harry Potter alum wanting to shatter preconceptions), but unless HBO completely overhauls the role, I can’t see a gigantic name like Watson taking it. Surely she’s got bigger (and better-paying) scripts on her doorstep already. Someone also suggested Molly Quinn, who at 19, is certainly old enough… but she’s an American actress, so I seriously doubt she would be considered. Not only that but she is currently filming the movie The First Time, even as we speak.

In the end, like as not, we’ll probably get a fresh face straight out of drama school, ala Emilia Clarke. But you never know—House Gatewatch has guessed right before.

What do you think? Do you like any of these choices? Support their bottoms!

  • Hannah Murray & Kit. Yeah, definately would love to see that.
I ADORE her Skins, she can brilliantly act . Her and Jon would have play some serious chemistry on screen. And the sex scene would be great too ;)

  • There is no shortage of actors who could crank this role.

Henley and Cole were my original favourites for Ygritte, but they sure ain’t the only ones.

It’d be nice to see an actor with the “round peasant face” and wonky teeth described in the books.

  • Karen Gillan is scheduled to continue shooting Doctor Who. At least a Christmas Special this fall, and Season 7 right after that, so I don’t know how free her schedule really is.

Of these choices, Bonnie Wright and Karoline Herfurth seem the best to me. Lily Cole as well, but is really busy like you said.

  • Karen Gillan IS excellent in Doctor Who, so is impossible for her to do any character is GoT or any other TV series right now because of her schedule.

  • Lily Cole seem to have the perfect look for the casting. What about Sarah Bolger? She would require some hair dye, but I am sure HBO can find that in the budget.

  • I just DO NOT see Bonnie Wright as Ygritte. I’ve always thought that idea was completely insane. I feel like she’s only been suggested because she’s British and has red hair

  • I always picture Ygritte being a little older than Jon…or at least, it wouldnt be too far fetched for me to see him with an older woman. I love the idea of Lily Cole tho! Unfortunately, im American and haven’t seen most of the other actors listed :)

  • Still voting for Lily Cole! Will hold tight to it, glad to see other people agree :)

  • I would be thrilled if Gillan could find the time to film this series in addition to Doctor Who.

Not Bonnie Wright, please. Nothing against her but just not really the role for her, judging from Potter.

I’m not familiar with the rest of these actresses save Seydoux (who has a great look, but I agree, too old IMO), but none seem too ill-fitting. It should be a role plenty of actresses could do well with.

  • What about Aimee-Ffion Edwards? She was great as Jenny in Luther and fits the description and is as old as Kit Harrington.

  • I would like to see the auditions on the dvd extra’s, with them saying those lovely words that kept me reading the books. Hannah Murray for me.

  • What about Kaya Scodelario (Effy in Skins UK)? She’s got that quirky beauty, and is at least Ygritte’s age (Kaya is 19). She may be a bit too pretty, but nothing a bad hair-do can’t fix.

  • Roger:
I would like to see the auditions on the dvd extra’s, with them saying those lovely words that kept me reading the books.

“Your mine, mine as I’m yours. And if we die, we die. All men must die, Jon Snow, but first we’ll live.”

    -Ygritte <3

  • Lily Cole if I remember is to tall. What’s Kit and Lily’s height comparison. Lily is just to pretty. Need more of a attractive girl next door.

Bonnie Wright I doubt would perform the scenes required of her for season 3.

Remember they wont be able to cast an actress that looks exactly like the description. But get close.

Im hoping they do cast Ygritte. It would be sad to just see a stand in extra in red hair for her role. Because she has little of it in book 2. I still hope David and Dan will extend her role and add give her more for season 2 if she is cast more then just an extra.

  • What about Isla Fisher? I think she’d be perfect. She may be Australian but I’m sure she could do whatever accent was required. Other than that, I’d prefer a new face, since I haven’t seen any suggestions that appeal to me for the character.

  • I think the actress who’s a best fit for the role is Susanne Bormann (The Baader-Meinhof Complex). While not a natural redhead, she’s been a redhead in several films including Baader, arguably her best known film. She even looks a lot like the character in the books as well as the picture on the top.

  • Karen Gillan is apparently about 6 feet tall. Taller than Harington? But definitely not “short and bandy-legged.”

  • Lala,

Kaya Scodelario was actually my choice for Margaery Tyrell before Natalie Dormer took the role. She would make a decent Ygritte, though I never pictured her quite as “twitchy” as the role suggests. I was also considering Scodelario for Meera Reed, if they age her up a tiny bit. Isaac wouldn’t have a hard time playing like he has a crush on her at all.

  • Kit,

I didn’t realise Isla was that old. She looks younger. Plus she’s small in height and I bet she can do “fearsome” pretty well.

  • OMG, Lily is spot on perfect. I can even picture her tossing off an over-the-shoulder “You know nothing, John Snow” in that photo.

  • Lea Seydoux has been my choice for Ygritte throughout all of this. I think she has the perfect look and foreign-ness for the part. Sure she’s 28, which is a few years older than Kit, but I don’t see why that should be an issue. If Natalie Dormer can play Margaery Tyrell against Gethin, Finn and Jack, there should be no reason why Lea couldn’t play Ygritte against Kit’s Jon.

  • OhWhoCares,

Lily is 5.10. If she’s just an inch taller than Kit, I could live with that.

Oh, not Lily you were talking about. Nevertheless…

  • I think that Ygritte (and Gilly and Meera) can be cast with an unknown actress, and I hope that’s what they do. All the unknowns they’ve cast so far have been brilliant, and it’ll be a lot cheaper that way

  • I love how all the guys conveniently forget that even Jon describes her as “average.”

HURRRRRRR she’s GOTTA BE A SUPERMODEL!!!!!

  • I have banged this drum and sang this song in other places, now I will sing it here. Karen, Karen, Karen!! I am totally behind Karen Gillan playing this role. She is the actress I pictured all along. Seven Hells! She better get this!

  • KG: I love how all the guys conveniently forget that even Jon describes her as “average.”

Girls too. Either way. I don’t need her to be particularly pretty. But it wouldn’t be a problem either. Kit is arguably better looking than book-Jon too.

  • sjwenings,

Lily does have a great unique look and is only a bit taller than Kit, but I don’t think it’s likely she’ll be playing Ygritte because of what FaB wrote – the role is a bit small for her.

  • I could definitely see Lauren Socha (Misfits) as Ygritte. Of course, her name is far too close to Osha.

  • I like Hannah Murray or Karoline Herfurth for the role. There’s something very magnetic about Karoline (not quite how I pictured Ygritte, but she could work!) and Hannah Murray I loved in Skins. I hadn’t thought about her as Ygritte, but she has that quirky charisma that Ygritte needs in order not to be annoying.

P.S. My sister, *ahem*, would also like to offer herself up for the role of Ygritte (definitely nothing to do with Kit Harrington ;p ). To be fair, she does look a lot like Hannah, haha.

  • KG,

She is, this is true. I think that’s why Karoline (though I find her attractive for the role…probably because she’s attractive) didn’t fit my mental image for Ygritte. I like Hannah because though she is VERY pretty, she’s pretty in a particular, weird kind of way that I think is what Jon comes to be attracted to in the novels.

  • I think Murray would be perfect, pretty close to what I imagined Ygritte when I was reading. Henley could work too, but the others are not exotic enough.

  • How about Juno Temple? She played Lola in Atonement (as a redhead if I remember correctly). And she’s only 22. She’s currently filming The Dark Knight Rises, but I would like to see her as a possibility.

Also like Lily Cole for the part, too.

  • I would love it SO MUCH if Karen Gillan could be Ygritte. But I’m a Who fan, so I’m biased. :)

  • Just a slight correction. According to IMDB, Molly Quinn’s birthday is October 8, 1993. So that would make her 18 in the coming October, not 19 as you’ve stated. That being said, she’s too young for the part I’d think.

  • Gel,

She gorgeous and fantastic, but she’s busy with True Blood and is American. Don’t see it happening

  • How about Julie McNiven (Ginn from SGU)? She’s a more attractive version of how I’d imagined Ygritte when I read the books, she’s been on genre shows before, and I can’t imagine that she’s well-known enough to command the kind of salaries that many of the actresses already mentioned must require.

  • i have been on the Karoline Herfuth bandwagon the longest … loved her in Perfume Story Of A Murder … watch it …. she looks just like Ygritte should (in a different time setting) … her hair is her most stunning feature, not that she is plain or anything but she has an odd look to her.

and for those of you suggesting Karen Gillan or the girl from True Blood i say … put down the crack pipe and back slowly away from your keyboards … i am sure that they will just up and leave their more popular tv shows for this small role … seriously, casting threads always bring out the fanboi cranks.

  • Gel, I had never considered Deborah Ann Woll for Ygritte, but you’re right: she would be absolutely MAGNIFICENT.

  • Karoline Hefurth as a peasant from Perfume: Story Of A Murderer … pretty much perfect looking and the perfect level of actress for the role both talent and status wise.

  • I disagree. I think she looks way to “soft” for the role. Taena works so well for Osha cause she’s rough around the edges. A soft-looking, dainty, pretty girl just aint gonna do it for Ygritte, period. Need somebody with physicality, and strength. I imagine someone athletic, with sharp features.

    Chris Beasley:
Your last two, especially the last one, Lily Cole, look the most like the part to me.

  • Kit,

I never thought of her…but she would actually work really well! She even has the “pug-nose” haha. I think she’s American though, so that could pose a problem.

  • I think Lea Seydoux is too old for the part, but: I’ve only seen her in Robin Hood and she did have a strong presence, and made these great facial expressions (something about her eyes) that are very Ygritte-like. If she was scruffied up and given a spear, she would be Ygritte.

I came across actress Claire Foy…and I’m not sure on her acting skill (I’ve never seen her in anything) but this picture is very Ygritte, in my mind (the nose and teeth may even be acceptable!): http://www.beyondhollywood.com/uploads/2008/11/M-005_00231_rgb.jpg
I’m just basing it off this one picture, though.

But I think they’ll (they’ve?) cast someone unknown.
Either way, I wish we had some legit casting news =(

  • KG,

Aye, milady. This is why Conan O’Brian with a wig would be perfect for Egret the Plaino Ginger Wilding. Bonus: He can fake a terrible english accent. If they rewrite her as a comic relief (a la Samwise McFat)

  • Epic knows nothing,

I like Sophie Myles! I hadn’t even thought of her. She’d be a good Ygritte, even if she’s probably too old.

lol yeah, I personally don’t care how Ygritte’s face and teeth look. I think she should have a very earthy, rugged look to her, but it’s too much work getting all worked up over tiny details like that. Although it is funny, because her crooked teeth seem so important to Jon.

  • Anyone considered Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria from Twilight)? The Victoria character is a bit Ygritte already. Also a bit up there in Kit Harrington love interest years but can certainly play Ygritte attitude.

  • fancySansa: she’s probably too old

A few years is easy to hide. but fat is fat. You can’t hide fat. I can’t have a chubster Egret.

  • Staeven,

Rachelle is a great actress, but yes, I think too old for that part. I would have liked her for Melissandre.

Too many suggestions here are for hot babes… go reread the description at the top! Ygritte is plain. You can’t have a wildling looking hotter than Cersei or Dany!

  • I’d like Karen Gillan but she’s doing a good job on Doctor Who already, it would be too much for her Imo.

Molly Quin did a great job on Castle and you say she is filming. I don’t know if she is going to appear on season 4 of the series. I don’t know much about the progress on this season 4 of Castle though.

    Anyways….,

Every time I look at that picture that you call a teaser, I see Lily Cole in there. I confess it’s the first time I ever heard of her or Alice Henley or Hannah Murray, but I see Lily Cole in there. I don’t really have any other recommendations, sorry, so I just picked what’s on your list of suggestions.

Most of the other’s are too high on the budget lol

  • Why do people only suggest redheads???

It may come as news to many :-) but women can actually color their hair! And chances are good that she would be wearing a wig anyway!

Natural hair color is NOT AN IMPORTANT casting criteria!

… But if I had to pick one from the article suggestions, Lily Cole comes closest to how I imagine Ygritte.

  • Here’s who I think is not going to happen:

    1. Molly Quinn- filming Castle in L.A.- shoots the same time as GoT
    2. Juno Temple- her schedule is so busy I don’t know when she sleeps- she’s got The Dark Knight Rises to film and then The Brass Teapot
    3. Karen Gillan- filming Doctor Who- don’t think she’ll do both shows
    4. Lea Seydoux- I think she’ll stick with films for the time being
    5. Deborah Ann Woll- she’s adored by fans on True Blood- she won’t leave
    6. Lily Cole- she has great hair haha but I agree with a previous poster- she looks too etheral for the role
    7. Bonnie Wright- okay, this is more of a “please no!”

    Who I like:
    1. Karoline Herfurth- my personal favorite http://www.imdb.com/media/rm406624256/nm0378932
    2. Rachel Hurd Wood- she looks more like Ygritte than Karoline, but I think Karoline can pull off Wildling better- but I still like her
    3. Hannah Murray- never heard of her before but she also has a great look and Skins does turn out a lot of good young actors
    4. Charlotte Croft- good find Pastor of Muppets- if they go for relative unknown, I think she looks the part
    5. Alice Henley- if the go for an older Ygritte, she’d be great

*And this isn’t even taking into account all the blondes and brunettes who could dye their hair.
    * I can see Nina, D&D, and HBO taking their time with this one though. They need a believable actress that the fan girls won’t hate for stealing Jon Snow ;)

  • Fire And Blood,

Kaya would be a great Meera. I think Sarah Bolger would be good too actually (I originally wanted her for Margaery). And if Sarah is too old her younger sister Emma would be a good pick too.

  • Lars:
Why do people only suggest redheads???

It may come as news to many : And chances are good that she would be wearing a wig anyway!

Natural hair color is NOT AN IMPORTANT casting criteria!

Natural color has always that special thing hehe but well, putting that way I think the only thing to worry or that would with no doubt be a must, is the fact the actress should be british =)

Nice point you brought there imo.

  • GaR,

As near as I can tell, every person shouting for her to be supermodel gorgeous is a man. If I’ am incorrect then I am sorry if my blatantly heterosexual worldview is showing. I know it’s out of fashion these days.

Either that or you’re just looking for a fight. I’m always happy to oblige. Shall we, smartypants?

  • Has anyone tried just looking at castingcallpro.com? I’ve been looking at actresses that fit the description (red hair, caucasian, 20-28) and there are a lot that could work! It seems that they would choose an unknown also….or maybe they are filling the major roles with unknowns and the characters that get killed off are going to be more major actors and actresses.

  • While we are talking about casting plain crooked teeth Ygritte from a novel, we are discussing casting a character in TV show .

A not so plain casting choice will allow then to condense the time it takes for Jon & Ygritte to get together. It is TV after all ;-)

All bets are off, plain, unique, gorgeous, dyed hair, it’s all a bit of fun speculating :-)

  • Hannah Murray or Karoline Herfurth but Hannah Murray has a wildling look… I can see her saying: you know nothing JS…

  • I’d be happy with any of the names listed above….with the exception of Bonnie Wright – too young, and everyone will call her Ginny the way they call Osha Tonks. It’d be nice for Game of Thrones to stand apart from Harry Potter.

I don’t think age should be much of a problem, considering Ygritte is supposed to be older than Jon, and Jon was already aged up in the series anyways. And Natalie Dormer is playing a 16-year-old. So an older actress would be awesome.

Still, just based on looks, I’d say Lily Cole. If we can’t get the Princess Merida from Pixar’s Brave, that is. She’d be my first choice ;)

  • Sarah,

Thank you for mentioning Princess Merida from Brave. Everytime I see a picture of her I just think “it’s Ygritte!”

  • I’d like to see Hannah Murray. She was great in Skins and she’s wild enough to play the part.

And… on the other hand, Natalie Dormer isn’t playing a 16 year old girl but a 21 year old, no? I mean, Daenerys had to be 18 in the tv show so all the people had to age accordingly. That’s what I understood.

P.S. Bonnie Wright is (don’t criticize me) kinda ugly… why would you want her as Ygritte…

  • Kudos to our good Pastor..I like Charlotte Croft.. I like her freckles and the way her front teeth are just slightly off-centre. When he first suggested her I was so struck by her that a week later I was remembering her with more and wilder hair..hope she gets /got an audition..

I think Lily Cole is too ethereal looking

  • Please none of this commercial actresses. Lily Cole – meh. I love Karen Gillan but she should stay in DW. I also like Harry Potter but if any one of their actresses make an appearance in GoT the acting level would SERIOUSLY drop. Emma Watson’s acting alone makes me weep.

Besides, the actress to play Ygritte doesn’t have to be a redhead. They can always wear wigs!

And considering the scenes Jon and Ygritte would be in, she would have to be comfortable doing some naked scenes on TV (assuming HBO does this, which I think they will) So I think it will be someone older and more comfortable in front of the camera and more willing to appear nude.

  • Hannah Murray! Perfect

Some of the others look ok, but none of the very model-esque ones please.

An as for Karen Gillan, no! She has divided the Who fanbase because she is gorgeous but her acting is somewhat dubious! Some love her, some hate her, but few simply tolerate her.

  • Holliday Grainger i think could be good, she is pretty even though she’s younger than Jon she could still pull it off. I think she should be Yigrett especially if the Borgias was cancelled.

  • While I seriously love Molly Quinn in Castle and Deborah Woll in True Blood, I think Karoline Herfurth would fit the role most. I never thought of her (albeit being German myself), but she is a good actress and has a that special look that is not beautifull in the traditional sense, which is exactly how Ygritte is described.

As a geeky alternative, I could see Summer Glau pull this off. Don’t know how she will look as a redhead, but she also has that weird beauty that Herforth has.

Quinn on the other hand would be a superb Meera:)

  • Louise,

Considering the scenes Jon and Ygritte will be in, they’ll be either clothed ,under furs or in the dark..not too revealing then. ;)

  • Oh, God… NOT Hannah Murray. She looks like she should be hanging out at the Mall with her BFFs, not wandering the Northernlands.

  • Obsidian,

Hahaha true! But what about the cave thing? ;) Anyway too much speculation there, the directors/D&D would certainly find a way around it.

But now that I think about it, I don’t think anyone would be naked seeing as it’s very cold out in the north and not having any clothes on would certainly kill someone. I couldn’t quite believe it when I read that cave scene in the book.

I’m just glad I’m not Nina Gold – there are too many things to consider just for one role!

  • I’d say Ygritte is more unconventional than unattractive, but I think the most important thing is to find a good actress who can capture her personality and make you fond of her saying a certain signature line again and again.

    Kit,
I think Alison Pill could work, and she’s done nude scenes in the past so being on GoT shouldn’t phase her too much.

  • I imagine Ygritte will be played by an unknown, but I hope she’s a little older than Kit (or at least can be made to look older)- I think the Jon/Ygritte dynamic works better if she’s a few years past him. If they’re the same age, you could argue that wildlings are forced to grow up faster, but a slightly older Ygritte would be simpler. I don’t think it would work if she looks younger than him.

She also needs to be athletic enough to be a realistic spearwife- not Brienne levels of muscular, but she has to be strong enough to climb, fight and shoot a bow. So not a skinny waif. I don’t think her height matters too much though- she’s described as short, but height isn’t key for the character so there’s plenty of range.

  • I pray to the 7 that Lily Cole is not cast as Ygritte. If you’re going off the picture alone, then yes she does have the appearance about right. She is beautiful and unusual…

But her acting skills are limited at present. In The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus she was a cypher not a character. In the Doctor Who episode in which she ‘starred’, Cole played a siren who merely floated around looking sexy and shrieking. Even in those Rimmel (?) adverts, Zooey Deschanel was better at selling the ‘london look’.

She has a great look. That’s it. Please pick a good actress Nina Gold!

  • Romola Garai has been suggested. She is great in everything. I know: she would need a wig.

Hannah Murray was one of the more subtle performers in Skins. I think she has the potential to play Ygritte. And with regards to the ‘she’s very skinny comments’ she was playing a character with an eating disorder in that show. Hopefully someone gave her a lrg portion of pie & peas at the wrap party.

  • Allison Pill would be my choice. Lookwise and actingwise. She was great in In Treatment.

  • As french, I would say Léa Seydoux (‘love her, really) but she’s not “wild” enough so Lily Cole would be great (even she seems too young to be older than Kit on the picture)

  • The looks are not overly important here, but I don’t think it’s an easy casting even then – as people have mentioned Ygritte has to be ‘rough around the edges’, and this without appearing over-dramatic (something even Natalia Tena suffered a bit from in my personal opninion, but I think she probably played it as she was asked to play, and for most fans here it seemed ok like that). I actually would have liked Natalie Dormer as Ygritte, rather than as Margaery… I don’t know any of the actresses suggested and don’t know of others to add, but most likely Ygritte has been cast allready anyway ;-)

  • Seriously, who cares? Ygritte is one of the most annoying secondary characters of the whole series.. I wish they cut her from the show

    Cast Roose Bolton already !

  • jellydonut:
Molly Quinn is way too lovely and cute. I doubt she could be fearsome *at all* even if she tried. ^_^

and then she’s 17, not 19.. i still love her, but my ideal actress should look slighty older than kit.

Karen Gillan and Lily Cole are both too famous (KG is lovely and a great actress though) IMO, they are both too beautiful, but this is not a huge problem.

sjwenings: Girls too. Either way. I don’t need her to be particularly pretty. But it wouldn’t be a problem either. Kit is arguably better looking than book-Jon too.

this. I don’t care about how pretty they are. I was in the kit-is-too-pretty-to-play-jon team early on and now i think he’s one of the best casting choices. I’D still rather they don’t cast a super model though, but makeup can fix almost everything!

I’ve never watched the girl who plays GW in HP, but she looks okay.

Nassisal: I could definitely see Lauren Socha (Misfits) as Ygritte. Of course, her name is far too close to Osha.

i LOVE lauren socha. But I bet she has a full schedule and she doesn’t look like Ygritte to me.

Deborah Ann Woll is too famous, busy and american. naaa.

Konwell: How about Julie McNiven (Ginn from SGU)?

if she’s the same Julie McNiven who was in supernatural, i don’t like her acting. And her red hair looks sooo fake :D

    I think my favorite are
1)Alice Henley: I read about her first on westeros.org. She’s perfect.
Yep, i know, she is 30, but if 24-years-old kit can play 18 yo. jon snow (or 19 years old, depends on the episode ;) ), i can totally see a 30 years old actress playing a wildling girl 3 years older .
    2) http://www.spotlight.com/interactive/cv/1/F147230.html
    Charlotte Croft
somebody suggested her in that Alton Lannister post, and i think she’s just perfect.
    3)Hannah Murray.
Come on, she’s not too skinny :)

    …in nina gold we trust

PS: FaB, are you telling me you never watched Doctor Who? I can’t believe it….
What kind of Geek are you?

  • As far as looks go Felicia Day is always who I picture, but alas she is American so I wouldn’t really think she would be considered. She is best known for starring and writing her own webseries “The Guild” or playing Penny in Joss Whedon’s “Doctor Horrible”. Plus she is currently in the first few episode’s of the new season of Eureka.

  • I don’t mind Lily Cole, I saw her in a couple things… but I don’t think her moon face is right for Ygritte.

I don’t know why people look at Lea Seydoux and think she is too old… have you seen her in La Belle Personne? Probably not, but she is sweeeeeeeeet.

  • Personally I loved the Isla Fisher suggestion. I couldn’t care less about the age of the actress they cast, as long as they aren’t pushing 50 or so. Isla has the perfect look for me.

The mention of Romola Garai (who I would love to see somewhere in GoT) got me to thinking about Saiorse Ronan (who was in Atonement with her). She’s probably too big now but she is a fantastic actress… maybe Meera Reed?

  • I prefer Alice Henley to Lily Cole. Yes, she does look the part, but I’m tend to be more interested in actors that don’t necessarily look exactly like their description, so long as the character is spot on. Plus it helps separate the book from the show for me.

My dark horse for the Ygritte race is Marianna Palka. She’s in the older group, but has the acting chops.

    http://vimeo.com/16991149

  • Zach Zeeman,

I love Felicia Day, but she tweeted, probably in reference to GoT:

We need to encourage low-brow comedies to have more nudity like in the 80’s, so artsy shows can stop throwing it in randomly to be edgy.

She might not be their fave person.

  • Michelle R.,

Hahaha she just sounds bitter because she wasn’t allowed to audition for the show; and it’s not because she’s American (Dinklage and Momoa represent!) it’s because her acting socks (I had to escape the filter)

Also, GoT = artsy? I can call GoT a hundred more things but artsy is definitely not one of them (this is not to be mistaken for an insult!). She used the wrong adjective.

  • Nassisal:
I could definitely see Lauren Socha (Misfits) as Ygritte.Of course, her name is far too close to Osha.

I wanted her to play Asha!

  • I think Rachel Hurd-Wood would be perfect for the part. She already has the British accent and is around the right age, although she is a bit more delicate looks wise compared to the description of Ygritte in the book.

  • Never thought about Romola Garai. I’m a big fan of her and would love to see her in Game of Thrones, but I’m not sure if I’d want to see her as Ygritte. I’m sure she could do it though, since she’s awesome.

I’m a bit surprised to see so many people favoring Lily Cole. I think she resembles a doll or a fairy or some type of wispy, ethereal supernatural creature. She doesn’t look strong or wild enough to play Ygritte. And her acting is okay, but not spectacular.

  • Alice Henley. Because it makes sense: Previous audition + HBO connection (Rome) +physical features…though I’m not sure if she is redhead though neither is Carise Van Houten.

  • sean bean being the 1%, 99% of the time some people should realize when they suggest super mega star A-Listers for this show, it’s, in all likelyhood, never going to happen. there are a lot of reasons, money and scheduling being a big part of that. when you sign on to this show its a long term commitment. it dictates a lot of what you can and cannot do film wise and a lot of actors arent going to take their time up with this when they can make 10x more in a big hollywood movie. that said, we are already extremely spoiled on this show- the way they cast incredibly seasoned actors that i’ve never heard of for relatively minor roles like aemon, the mormonts, selmy, luwin, rodrik, varys… we don’t need hollywood stars for leading roles, and personally i think the show is better off without them.

  • If Winterfell comes before the Wall, we can assume that Hadrian’s wall is an inspiration for Westeros’ wall, therefore I believe that the natural progression should see the wildlings as having a broad Northumbrian to Border Scottish accent.

This is largely due to some of the characters from Winterfell having a Yorkshire accent, so I would love to see a relatively unknown but talented actress from Northumberland or Scotland take the role.

Just to note, a Northumbrian accent isn’t the same as a Geordie one!

  • Kit,

That is exactly how I have pictured Ygritte! I was completely surprised at how well she played Maud. At the same time I saw Scott Pilgrim, and I couldn’t figure out why she looked so familiar. Had to Wiki her. Alison Pill! She’s tough, attractive, but rough around the edges. Just like a wilding would be.

  • Sarah:

You may need to explan the subtle difference between the Northumbrian and Geordie accents.I am from NI and I don`t think I could tell them apart.I think both are likely to cause some problems with are non UK viewers. No offence to anyone from the NE.of England…….I would put my own N.Irish accent in the same catagory..I think Ygritte would suit a Scottish accent, it is perhaps more recognisable to the rest of the world, And would give a Pictish tone to her character, which would tie in with the Hadrians wall analogy.Which I like.

  • I think a lot of choices presented here are too young. Part of the charm (for me at least) of Jon Snow and Ygritte is that she is older and more experienced. And in my opinion, that fact combined with sex scenes or dare I hope a well rounded onscreen relationship would capture the essence of the books. A young Ygritte would be disappointingly bland.

  • Epic Awesomesauce:

Well, in the books, she is a few years older than Jon Snow (3?). However, that would put her around 19, which is still pretty young. However, I know the show has been casting the young actors a bit older than their book ages (i.e., Natalie Dormer as Margy Tyrell… 15 or 16 in the books and the actress is 29.)

  • NewJeffCT,

Don’t forget they aged everyone up. Jon Snow looks like he is 20-25, so an Ygritte aged 25-30 is more like it. (Many actresses aged 30-35 can easily look like 21-25).
Women at that age look strong, beautiful, and a little better defined than at 20–and as a bonus they are more experienced actors. The women above look very young, barely at legal voting age. If the age difference between Jon and Ygritte is too subtle, people won’t ‘get it’. So if the producers care about that dynamic, they will make it obvious. IMO I will see someone about 30-35 hired for the part. And I hope so.

  • OMG, NOT Bonnie Wright. She is very lacking in talent, in my opinion. She gave such a lackluster and stiff performance in all the Harry Potter movies.

As much as I love Lily Cole, I am not sure I can see her as Ygritte. I’m not familar with most of the actresses listed, but looks wise, I am digging Hannah Murray.

  • Karen Gillan is a bit of a grating presence onscreen. I just don’t think she’s a very good actor and is too conventionally beautiful in my opinion to play Ygritte.

I’m hoping we get an unknown to play her but Lily Cole looks the part, more peculiarly beautiful. Hannah Murray also looks good in the photo above – the slightly scruffy hair helps.

  • Epic Awesomesauce,

I think you’re absolutely right. I still see it going to a relatively unknown actress, but as Kit’s 24 (though in my opinion he’s a bit babyfaced) playing 17/18 the actress selected could easily be late 20s/early 30s playing early 20s. I think 28-32 is a good age range for an Ygritte actress. BUT on the off chance they want to go with a 22 year old American I am always available ;);)

  • OhWhoCares: on the off chance they want to go with a 22 year old American I am always available

Send in x-rays of your misaligned teeth and nudie shots with your CV. Hairy red armpit hairs a plus.

  • Off topic, but I thought I would throw it out there………….I spotted Isaac H-W and Christian Nairn together waiting for their ride to leave the base unit at Saintfield. Isaac looked like he has had a growth spurt from last year, I would say 2-3 inches maybe. If he does continue to grow like a weed,as a lot of boys do at his age, by the time we get to season four, Bran and Hodor will look rather comical. The “make Bran younger again” CGI could be expensive………seriously though, is there a possibility Issac could be replaced in later seasons? I guess this is just one of many problems that have to be considered regarding the timeline of different characters over the whole story.

  • Off Topic- A friend just sent me a link to this – http://www.listal.com/list/game-thrones-death-tally (series 1 only!) Makes you realise just how many characters were killed off.

They missed a few- Mago and the two unnamed assassins off the top of my head. Perhaps not the most memorable characters, but the methods of their deaths certainly were. Does anyone else mentally add red lines to the cast page on this site?

  • Obsidian,

There is still the cave scene.

Also, IMO Hannah Murray, maybe a bit young compared to Kit, but it could work, she also has that Yigritte look.

  • purplejilly,

or how bout one for *looks around conspicuously* down there! I just remember reading that part in the book and Jon wondering if that makes her even more “lucky”.

A fire crotch rug. Just sayin’

Still voting for Lily Cole PS!

  • Lord Two Feathers,

I say let them age. Besides riding Hodor there really isn’t anything in Bran’s story that is age prohibitive. They can fix that too with having him ride his horse to the wall and then ride the elk after that. Not a huge deal in my opinion.

  • Lord Two Feathers,

I really hope a recast isn’t necessary. Maybe Bran could ride? They’d have to save his horse during the chaos somehow- or find it afterwards having somehow survived- but it’s possible. Or simply minimise the scenes where he needs to be carried. Show Hodor going to pick him up when he needs to move, but not actually doing any carrying? A (light!) dummy could be used for distant shots.

  • One more Ygritte point.
She’s a spearwife so she needs to have a certain “fierceness” to her which eliminates Lily Cole, Bonnie Wright, Karen Gillan and Hannah Murray in my opinion. Maybe those actresses could surprise me but from their collective bodies of work I just haven’t seen it.

  • Murray has a pretty good range of facial tricks, as well as (I would say) having Ygritte-esque teeth.

It’s called being British. Seriously, my mind was blown when I realized that not one of Skins castmembers has straight teeth.

  • I don’t think looks, hair color, and height are an issue. Those can all be “fixed” by make up and camera angles.

The only thing that matters is can she act and what kind of chemistry she has with Kit.

    Karen Gillan would be excellent.

I still can’t believe Emilia Clarke went straight from drama school to GoT.

  • I go for Bonnie wright. Of course the whole potter image und her appearance are not exactly what i would cal fitting for the role, but I just believe that it would help her a lot to breack this vicious circle of one hit actors (like mark hammil and co.)

PS: is there anybody else who thinks that lily cole looks like the dead wildling girl from the first episode?

  • Lily cole sounds good but Ygritte is the kind of role where I’d prefer to see a completely new face :)

  • Sophia Myles came to mind for me, but whatever. It’ll probably be an unknown actress.

They could cast me – 24, complexion of a redhead (though I did not inherit the hair colour from my father), average looking, not some wuss girl (raised on a rez), love the cold weather, know my way around the wilds, but uh, yeah my accent would be horrible… so never mind. wishful thinking.

I’m not sure I agree with the suggestions above. They all seem a little young. I agree with the people saying she should be older than Kit. It wouldn’t make sense for her to be so young (she is older than Jon Snow in the books).

  • Epic Awesomesauce,

That’s why Alice Henley is perfect. She’s slightly older (30 years old to Harrington’s 23) and she has an unconventional beauty to her that the shallowest of people would call “ugly”.

  • Epic Awesomesauce,

Will do. I’ll use my pre-braces x-rays and keep my mouth shut til its too late, dye my hair red and get a ginger weave for my pits

Oh lawd, just read through all the REST of the talk of pit and pubes weaves.. HAHA

  • OhWhoCares: Oh lawd, just read through all the REST of the talk of pit and pubes weaves.. HAHA

this is not going to be a problem.
If Evan Rachel Wood found a pubic wig (or whatever it’s called), you can do the same.
You know you can do it! We’re supporting your bottom here ;)

  • Josh Atreides,

Well, Alice Henley’s older than the others on this list, but this list is a little absurd. She is a favorite only because of her tweets around the time of the HBO audition were noticed. To me she doesn’t strike as an Ygritte. I expect someone a little more like Natalia Tena as Osha: Wild and strong, not dainty and quaint.

  • the blind girl,

lol… not sure why but I just found out that:

In Stanley Kubrick’s black comedy Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, the president of the United States is named Merkin Muffley.

  • Pastor_of_Muppets,

    Do you mean this actress?

    Charlotte Croft

    http://www.spotlight.com/interactive/cv/1/F147230.html

Wow! sign her up Nina (if she did great on her auditions of course), appearance wise, it’s as if Ygritte jumped right of the page (with the wildling girl hairstyle added).
I love her stage credentials, which is a definite plus, and her height at 5’3″ is about right, she has the pug nose, freckles and a very slight offness about her teeth (mind you they look perfect to me).

Great find, she is my unknown favorite atm, my personal known choice is Lea Seydoux though. I think Ms. Seydoux’s agent would jump at the chance of adding Ygritte to her resume, it’s only for two seasons, unless D&D change the story concerning her.

  • I don’t like Lily Cole for Ygritte, she looks too sweet and adorable (and a little like an alien), and I don’t see Ygritte sweet, adorable or like an alien.

Don’t like Bonnie either. Not my favourite actress…

The girl from Skins doesn’t look bad.

Also, Ygritte is supposed to be a little older than Jon, but he says she looks younger than she is, if I’m not mistaken, so I think they shouldn’t try to cast an older actress. It’s not how old the characters are, but how old they LOOK.

  • What about Rachelle Lefevre? She would make a good Ygritte.

I really like Karen Gillan…but think Ygritte has a touch of danger in her that I’m not sure she has (having watched her in Dr. Who).

  • Elena Amici,

I appreciate the support! The ginger merkin is really all I need.. My teeth are straight but very uneven, my hair is a wild mess, and I’m shorter than Kit. I mean that’s all Ygritte needs right? Right?! My ginger merkin and I have got this, southern accent and all

  • I’m throwing my dice on Rachel Hurd-Wood. She looks nearly identical to the picture at the first of this thread

I wonder if Loras will need a Rainbow merkin for his upcoming parts (his lines I mean)

  • OhWhoCares,
I think some people beyond the wall should have southern accents! It goes with my usa backwoods hillbilly view of the wildlings. Down here we call them “Georgians”. Ha!

  • Karoline Herfurth would a really good choice for the role. Although she might not fit the look 100%, I have seen her in roles that would fit with my take on Ygritte.

I hope they cast someone unknown or almost unknown.

Also I hope they care about the fact, that she is older and has to look older than KH, otherwise her ‘tagline’ will be even more annyoing.

  • Lily Cole would make a great Ygritte. Most of those named above would, really.

That said, I am now firmly on the side of the GOT casting department’s amazing abilities at finding unknown actors to fill roles. I am all for finding more of these wonderfully talented, yet previously unheard-of people for roles like that of Ygritte. So far, the mix of well-known and little-known actors has worked fantastically; and we’ve met some incredibly gifted young people who have bright futures ahead of them. So more of the same is my choice.

  • KG: GaR, As near as I can tell, every person shouting for her to be supermodel gorgeous is a man. If I’ am incorrect then I am sorry if my blatantly heterosexual worldview is showing. I know it’s out of fashion these days.Either that or you’re just looking for a fight. I’m always happy to oblige. Shall we, smartypants?

Seriously, I didn’t see a single comment calling for Ygritte to be played by an actor who’s “supermodel gorgeous.”

A strangely large number of people think wildlings should look “exotic” or “foreign” which is as baffling as it is wrong, but I honestly see no basis for your weirdly hostile comment.

  • GaR,

I have to agree with you GaR, there is nothing exotic about a wildling, unless you think that windblown, sunburned, chapped lips and being inbred is exotic.

  • The Mourning Star:
    GaR,

I have to agree with you GaR, there is nothing exotic about a wildling, unless you think that windblown, sunburned, chapped lips and being inbred is exotic.

Only Crasters clan is inbred! Remember what Ygritte says? About how a true man steels his woman from Afar to strengthen the clan! It’s not a big deal just clarifying

  • I’m amused nobody’s pointed this out, but YES, red hair is hard to fake. You’re obviously missing the point that the hair cannot be evaluated in a vacuum. Ginger-haired people have noticeably less melanin than others and it is present in their skin and other places. Make-up cannot completely accommodate for this, because human beings don’t just see the outermost skin, our eyes can pick up color that sits a millimeter or so underneath the surface of the skin, and is what our eyes and brain inherently process without thinking about it.

This isn’t something I just made up either, in the realm of 3d modeling, the technique to emulate this visual feature is commonly called ‘subsurface scattering’ and is one of the core features of any CGI intended to be photo-realistic.

Just saying, as a counterpoint to the ‘we don’t need a red-head’ crowd… yeah, actually you do. Or maybe a very fair haired blond.

  • the blind girl,

Yeah, that is a thing, but you honestly think Craster’s the only one who likes to keep it in the family North of the Wall?

After a couple years of winter, Scrabble and Cyvasse might start getting a bit boring :P

  • The Mourning Star,

You were right though, wildlings are mostly rough-as-guts peasant stock. I think only Dalla and Val are described as being beautiful in the book; the rest of them are average or worse. Oh, there’s Jarl, maybe? The pet? I forget. And Rayder’s supposed to be a little bit on the handsome side too, as I recall.

But yeah, for the most part they’re not a pretty people.

  • Josh Atreides: Alice Henley. Because it makes sense: Previous audition + HBO connection (Rome)

If anyone else besides me completely forgot about this woman’s ‘drilled’ performance in Rome:

    (sex scene) http://www.vplay.ro/watch/z2ysbreh/

Granted, she has a very nice bounce about her. But she doesn’t slap like a wildling; no, no, no. Even Ros could slap better than that. If this woman ever says “you know nothing”, I will be forced to giggle.

  • Epic Awesomesauce,

    “Drilled performance” HAHAHA hahaha.

    Oh and more on Ygritte

I honeslty dont think they will pick someone truly unattractive to play Ygritte…It’s just not HBO’s style, for example…who they picked to play Brienne is pretty damn hot. I think Lily Cole comes closest to the very weird unique beauty.

  • I can’t imagine half the suggestions, and this is from seeing their previous work, as being able to play Ygritte. A lot of the choices being mentioned come across as too delicate imo. Not that they can’t play Ygritte but their previous work makes me wonder.

Also, no drop dead gorgeous ladies, it kind of lessens her character and her relationship to Jon if she was.

The perfect actress for her has to be able to play assertive, stubborn, shy, and not come across as obnoxious. As long as she is able to be all those things then I’m cool with whoever they cast. I’m more in the camp of going with an unknown rather than the choices suggested.

  • Louisa,

I don’t see her as bitter, but I can’t know for sure. There are a whole lot of viewers who have no interest in auditioning for a part who thought the sex was too much. I’m not one of them, but it makes me think that she is just a fan with a not uncommon opinion. I’m guessing that she is one of the few actresses mentioned who knew what Game of Throne was before it went into production.

  • It has to be a wild face, not extremely beautiful, but with some charm. Thats why I think the better choices could be:

    1)murray
    2)Herfurth
    3)Henley

and maybe, with some looks changed: Gillan.

  • All my money on Rachel Hurd Wood. No one in this list fits “touched by fire” better. She’s the right age, a name but not all that famous, beautiful yet her most prominent feature is her teeth(besides the hair), and we know she’s got the chops. Her accent is a bit refined, but Im sure that could be fixed. It would make me a happy man to hear her say “you know nothing, Jon Snow”.

  • While I think Karen Gillen is a bit farfetched (although MAN OH MAN would it be awesome if they got her), I’m not sure that she would in fact be too busy on Doctor Who; she may be leaving at the end of this season, as tends to happen to the Doctor’s companions. (Matt Smith has been confirmed for next season, but Gillen and Arthur Darvill have not, unless I’ve missed the latest buzz.) So…there’s still that nerdy hope. And it would be great to ease the disappointment of her leaving Who with her popping up on Thrones.

Of course, I think Gillen is waaaaaay too beautiful to play this rough warrior woman…but I wouldn’t object too hard to them casting her either.

  • Abyss,

Nice, I hadn’t seen this one yet.
Nikolaj is wearing Lena’s hat? Or is it his hat, and she was wearing it on the panel?
Judging by what Kit says, Ygritte might be in season 2 more than she is in book 2

  • fancySansa,

Didn’t notices the thing with the hat… Maybe they have some weird borrow-me-your-hat-relationship? – I can’t believe that I actually think about this… In all honesty HBO, I need casting news.

  • Karen Gillian just confirmed at Comic-Con that she’s going to be in Series 7 of Doctor Who. Loved that little bit with Kit Harington saying that there might be a love story in sight. ;-)

  • Grx: How about Lauren Ambrose?

She is such a talent. She could totally take Ygritte to a new level. But I don’t hope that high. The picture you chose is not the most representative. If you are ever in the mood for a fun weird indie movie watch Psycho Beach Party. Because of her performance in that movie she will always have a special place in my heart. She was in some Torchwood eps so I guess anything is possible.

  • purplejilly:
    OhWhoCares,
I think some people beyond the wall should have southern accents! It goes with my usa backwoods hillbilly view of the wildlings.Down here we call them “Georgians”. Ha!

Why should they do that, when no other American accents appear in the series? The only “Southern” accents I’d like to hear are accents from the south of England, which generally connote the opposite of backwoods, with the exception of West Country accents. I’m firmly with the Scottish/Northumbrian camp, especially since red hair is common in Scotland.

    Shawn Edward Cantu:
I’m amused nobody’s pointed this out, but YES, red hair is hard to fake. You’re obviously missing the point that the hair cannot be evaluated in a vacuum. Just saying, as a counterpoint to the ‘we don’t need a red-head’ crowd… yeah, actually you do. Or maybe a very fair haired blond.

A fair haired blonde would work, just look at Christina Hendricks, a natural blonde. But pale skin, definitely necessary.

  • Shawn Edward Cantu,

Some people don’t look realistic as a redhead, no, but others do — it really depends on the person, doesn’t it? The field is limited, but not limited to natural redheads.

While I’m not suggesting her for his role, I’d defy anyone to say that Christina Hendricks — a natural blonde — can’t pull off the ginger! You through the blondes a bone in the end, but after making it seem like finding a suitable actress who is not a natural carrot top is like finding a needle in a haystack.

  • I could certainly picture the wildings as Germanic, it would probably be good for distinguishing them from the northmen south of the Wall.

Plus imagine Rattleshirt or Harma Dogshead with Germanic accents. That would kick ass.

  • Peltast,

If I know fantasy writers, GRRM probably on some high level idolizes Poul Anderson and Gene Wolf. Therefore beyond the wall is not Germanic but generally Nordic.

Now for D&D who are not fantasy writers, they don’t give two shits either way. All they care about is the budget. All I gotta say about that is:

Spend more on the music. It will pay off.

  • I’m not even familiar with most of these actresses to really comment and compare. I loved Alice Henley in Rome, and I think she more than capable of pulling it off acting-wise. I don’t see any problem with Ygritte being aged up, it’s not like she’s connected to the Westros family dynasties the Targs/Baratheons/Lannisters/Tullys/Starks etc. who all have to coordinated in terms of age because of the war and marriages and all that. Ygritte is supposed to be wiser and more worldly than Jon, so there’s nothing wrong with her being older because it suits her. Can she be a convincing redhead though?

Bonnie Wright is the only other I’ve seen. Redhead for sure, and this could be a different angle than older Ygritte, she could be younger than Jon but also more worldly and perhaps it would be salt to his wounds that young woman keeps telling him he knows nothing. But for her acting? As said above we don’t know her range so I have no clue if she can do it or not.

My bet is fresh face from acting school we’ve never heard of who’ll blow us away. I really want her to be a natural redhead. We’ve had enough of wigs, with Cersei and Jamie and Tyrion being dirty blondes, and Danny with her black brows. Can it be too hard to find a natural redhead who can also act the role?

I do like the idea of Nordic or Germanic actors playing the Wildings, with those accents instead of British ones. Aside from Mance, of course :)

  • Lily is too frail-looking, too soft-voiced. We want someone with sharper teeth here. We want someone tough, dangerous, someone torn between love and hatred, someone who can stare with a wolfish intensity. We want someone like Coral Amiga, who played the first daughter of Lucius Vorenus in Rome. If she said “You know nothing, John Snow,” I would believe her.

  • Hannah Murray would make a wonderful wildling.

her face is lit with fire and with kit Harrington i think they can have a good chemistry.

  • Of all the actresses suggested here, Lea Seydoux has the most intriguing face, with those languid and rather mysterious eyes, but Lily Cole’s appearance is the best suited for the role. The Ygritt featured in the first picture with Jon, by the way, is actually Kristen Stewart, who looks nothing at all like the character, but there you have it.

  • HumMis1349: Why should they do that, when no other American accents appear in the series? The only “Southern” accents I’d like to hear are accents from the south of England, which generally connote the opposite of backwoods, with the exception of West Country accents.I’m firmly with the Scottish/Northumbrian camp, especially since red hair is common in Scotland.

A fair haired blonde would work, just look at Christina Hendricks, a natural blonde. But pale skin, definitely necessary.

Haha i’m pretty sure Ohwhocares was joking haha, but I think the accents should be like Osha’s from the show…just a really messy english accent

  • Please NOT Karen Gillan, if she gets cast we’d have hordes of Whovians clogging up the internet gushing about how wonderful she is…*shudders*

Bonnie Wright gets my vote just because people will assume shes too sweet.

  • I think its wrong to assume the actress in question will be a natural redhead. Dinklage isn’t blonde, neither is Coster-Waldau or Clarke, yet they all play ‘goldenheads’ in the series.

With that said, I’m guessing the actress in question will be an unknown to most of us, and lacking red hair. ;)

  • from this list definitely Karen Gillan (impossible with Doctor Who) or Hannah Murray please. Seydoux is completely unrealistic i think…

  • Niklas,

Good point. Sophie Turner is also a natural blonde!

And I must say again, after seeing her performance in Good Dick, I’d really love to see Marianna Palka as Ygritte. That movie (which she wrote, directed, produced and co-starred) proved to me that she can certainly bring the intensity needed for Ygritte. But she also has a Scottish accent (not heard in the film, sadly) and a pretty amazing, huge, crooked grin.

  • nofoofaraw: I’d really love to see Marianna Palka as Ygritte

That’s incredible. I was just watching clips of that movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX6kBnfIUv8
And I gotta tell you that I really don’t know what you are talking about. I cannot find one thing about her that would indicate she’d be a great Ygritte. I can’t imagine watching even this psycho movie for 90+ minutes. Maybe there are other scenes where she is full of life and charm? These all have her saying ‘shut up’, ‘don’t fuck me’, ‘you’re annoying’, ‘you’re a piece of shit’, ‘i don’t like your face’, to what appears to be a nice boy who is dumb enough to not run far far away from her. Different strokes for different folks.

I’m a Whovian and don’t find Karen “that” wonderful at all. Bit in the minority side, I know :)

Judging only their faces, Hannah Murray looks more like the picture of Ygritte in my mind. I haven’t seen “Skins” yet, but it seems -for what I have read abot her- the girl got acting chops, so it’s fine for me.

Cole looks too beautiful for the role, though make-up can do miracles in either way. The rest, I only know Wright and Henley. The former still has to show more acting than the HP movies, and the latter is really good, but maybe too old.

  • I think it should be an older actress, not cougar old but mid to late twenties. And i always imagined the wildlings as more scandinavian than germanic to be honest.

  • Tyrion’s Scar:
Did anyone else notice that the Ygritte in the fan art posted with this article looks disturbingly like Kirsten Stewart?

lol I noticed that too. I can’t make out the artist’s name in that illustration.

  • Tyrion’s Scar,

Yep. I mentioned it in my own comment – it is Kristen Stewart. I’ve also seen art work of Rhaegar Targaryen with the face of the late great Heath Ledger, which was doubly eerie.

  • Molly Quinn & Karen Gillian are too pretty to be a Wildling and too young for Ygritte. While I adore them and their totally geeky senses of humor (ComiCon anyone?) they’re not right for the part. Plus I’d rather see them keep shooting Castle and Doctor Who.

  • 1.Hannah Murray: I have been mentioning her as a candidate for Ygritte sense about 2008-2009. She has always been my favorite for this role! I guess you could be a little hesitant about if Murray really has the fierceness this role demands, the the ability to play character that convincingly, without hesitation, can cut an old man’s throat. Personally have no idea how Hannah would do in such a role, so far I have actually only seen her in parts as “troubled teenagers”. But make know doubt about it, Murray has talent! And if you go by looks alone Murray is the perfect candidate for me: she has the round face, a bit of a pug nose, and crooked white teeth. etc.

2.Lea Seydoux Fan favorite, I can definitely see why! Probably the most unrealistic of all fan favorites though!

    3. Martina Horrigan: Don’t know anything about this girls or her acting ability but she has a good look for Ygritte

    4. Ruth Wilson I love Ruth Wilson! Very talented actress with unique/special looks. And judging by her performance in “Luther” she wouldn’t have any problem with being convincing in this role. A bit old and maybe even a bit too pretty for the role, but she certainly isn’t Hollywood pretty .

    5. Karoline Herfurth: Never heard of her before this thread but she has a good look for Ygritte.

    Pastor_of_Muppets,

That Charlotte Craft girl got a great look for Ygritte!

  • Epic knows nothing,

Well, I would recommend watching the whole movie to better understand the context of those clips, maybe before making your judgement. I think the clips show the actress’ ability to be ferocious and (yes) scary – which, to me, is a great portion of Ygritte’s character. If you do watch the movie (it’s on Netflix Instant), you would see that there are sweeter moments throughout and the guy has his reasons for staying with her and she for reacting the way she does with him.

Someone else had mentioned Marianna Palka as being their favorite for Brienne way back when, which I did not (and still do not) see at all. But yeah, I can totally see her as Ygritte for my own reasons. So yeah, you’re absolutely right, “different strokes for different folks”.

  • Karoline Herfurth would be a perfect casting. She has the freckles to go with the red hair…has a very strong look that would fit Ygritte. I can really see her and Kit developing their relationship. Just so.

  • Tyrion’s Scar: Did anyone else notice that the Ygritte in the fan art posted with this article looks disturbingly like Kirsten Stewart?

You’re right! This was my favourite fanart of them, and now it’ll forevermore be tainted :(

But, Kristen Stewart + Harry Potter + GOT = this image.

In light of this intersection there’s a Ginny vs. Bella meme that’s in need of a Dany concatonation :)

Norm: How about Christina Hendricks? Shes a bit older, but she really doesn’t look it.

Why does everyone keep suggesting her for every red-headed character? She’s too USian, and already in a popular series.

  • Lana:
    Tyrion’s Scar,

Yep. I mentioned it in my own comment – it is Kristen Stewart. I’ve also seen art work of Rhaegar Targaryen with the face of the late great Heath Ledger, which was doubly eerie.

I apologize. I did a search for ‘Kirsten’ [to make sure nobody had mentioned it yet] and nothing showed up. I think I got Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst spellings mixed up. =0

  • clemintine: You’re right! This was my favourite fanart of them, and now it’ll forevermore be tainted :(

Sorry. =( I hate it when that happens. Almost as bad as someone posting alternate stupid lyrics to songs in youtube comments and me not being able to hear it any other way from then on. =(

  • Why does everyone keep suggesting her for every red-headed character? She’s too USian, and already in a popular series.

Seriously! I keep wondering the same thing. I just don’t understand everyone’s obsession with her.

  • The Winter Rose,

Agreed. I think when a new red-haired actress becomes a big hit, people think she should play every role that requires that. Yeah, I don’t get it either.

  • HumMis1349: Why should they do that, when no other American accents appear in the series? The only “Southern” accents I’d like to hear are accents from the south of England, which generally connote the opposite of backwoods, with the exception of West Country accents. errrrrr this was definitely a joke…

  • Susan C: How about Juno Temple? She played Lola in Atonement (as a redhead if I remember correctly). And she’s only 22. She’s currently filming The Dark Knight Rises, but I would like to see her as a possibility. Also like Lily Cole for the part, too.

    Juno Temple would be perfect!

  • I was looking over actresses..
What about Lucy Griffths.. I think she would be perfect for her..

  • Can’t believe nobody thought of Rose Leslie. She’s the right age and colouration, she played the sassy maid on Downton Abbey very well (but isn’t coming back for the next season hmmm) and according to her CV she can do stage combat, horseriding, and Scottish and Irish accents among others, which is probably what they will go for with the wildlings on a whole if they can.

  • Katja: Can’t believe nobody thought of Rose Leslie.

Nice find! Probably the best pick I have seen here. Here’s a picture of her with wildling-esque hair.
    http://www.bloomberg.com/photo/-bedlam-/18249.html

    And this one:

    And a red carpet shot:
    http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/vtdjeS2AwXJ/Red+UK+Film+Premiere+Outside+Arrivals/hl7jW6ed30Z/Rose+Leslie

Awesome. To me she’s very close to my imagined Ygritte.

  • Epic the Christ,

    Thanks!

I thought of Ygritte the first time I saw her on Downton Abbey! Hope the Bedlam pics don’t mean she’s too busy with stage work though. But she won’t be introduced until late in the season so the play’s run ending Oct. 1 is hopefully fine.

  • If the producers are looking for a red-headed actress with a Scottish accent I don’t think Karen Gillen is a viable option given her association with Dr Who. My vote would be for Kathleen McDermott who can do a convincing Scots accent as she is from Glasgow :-}

    http://www.e4.com/media/4A8ABD60-48A2-4AA9-A693-F9AA3C329150_extra.jpg

She also looks good in red!

  • Me, obviously ;) 21, half Asian (because who knows what those wildlings get up to beyond the Wall), short, bandylegged, funny-toothed, round-faced, gingey (ok, fake) hair, great at accents… Haha. I reckon my vote’s for Karoline or Alice – bit older than Kit but quite young (and interestingly gorgey) in the face.

  • I don’t think the picture is much of a spoiler, any more than the name Ygritte (and any description of her whatsoever) is.

  • So I looked through the actors on that talent agency’s website, the same agency Tom Wlaschiha , Susan Brown and Kerr Logan are from, and I found her:

    Rose Leslie
    http://www.hamiltonhodell.co.uk/cv/client_rose-leslie_id_100050.htm

Might be a good choice? I mean just lookwise and what I read from her skills (also some scottish accents, she is from Aberdeen, and something like horse riding and sword fighting…) she could be Ygritte…

From those here listed I like Alice Henley, Lily Cole (just facewise) and I guess Lea Seydoux. For Ygritte absolutly don’t like Bonnie Wright, Karoline Herfurth (I just can’t picture her …because of the few things I’ve seen her in…though I don’t mislike herself…just not as Ygritte) Hannah Murray (I like the actress..but she is no Ygritte) I’m kinda neutal towards Karen Gillen..because I don’t know her(yet)I plan watching Dr. Who soon. :-)

  • Schlafmohn,

Yeah I mentioned Rose Leslie a bit higher. She was great on Downton Abbey, she’s got the right skills and she’s free as far as I can tell. If she’s from the same agency as those others as well I’d say she has a pretty good chance.

  • I’m still 100% on board with Rose Leslie as Ygritte even though she’s a tiny bit younger than I imagined she should be. But looking at Rose and her acting credits I can see that won’t matter.

  • Wow…. there’s a lot to read arond here. ;-)
I don’t know any of the actresses you’ve suggested so for me they’re all new-faces.
Just from looking at the pictures with-no ferther knowlege about the atresses (acting-wise, past apearences ect.) I have to say the last one – Lily Cole gives me the impression of a perfect Yigrit – the pale skin tune, the wild curly hair, the pale bright eyes, just perfect for me.
But again, that just the way she looks… I have no idea how great of an actress she realy is….. so I guess I’ll just have to see….

  • They’ll move ygritte to season 3. Jon will go over for the season 2 cliffhanger. And they will not cast an actress with “butter teeth” just because ygritte’s teeth are crooked in the book…if she has not been cast yet ( as a character completely pivotal to Jon’s life), it’s because they moved her part down a season…

  • Word has it that Hannah Murray has been cast as Gilly (source: Westeros.org), and for that I’m thankful. I can’t imagine her as Ygritte.

  • EVERYBODYLOOKATTHIS,

Yes, very good pick! Between Rose Leslie and Jennie Jacques, and so many out there we don’t have access to knowing, I just know they’ll get her right. The anticipation is big!

  • I like Léa Seydoux for the role, but these days i’m thinking about Eva Green as Ygritte…
I don’t know why, but maybe she could do great!
    What do you think?

  • As much as I love all these actresses (Gillan and Wright, obviously), they’re all remarkably pretty. The whole thing about Ygritte was that she had a kind of understated beauty. I can’t see anyone who has done modeling (like most of these girls) playing a plain girl like Ygritte.

    But that’s just me.

  • I have a $100 bet placed that she’ll be a brilliant unknown, a la Emilia Clarke. Playing that character will be a tightrope walk. She’s relatively minor, but the tone must be perfect. She’s integral to Jon’s character trajectory. All of those mentioned in the initial post are too pretty or lack chops. I think among the additional suggestions, Charlotte Croft best fits the bill.

(Where the hell did all the Lily Cole ‘ayes’ come from? She looks like a porcelain doll, is 5’10”, models, hasn’t shown range previously, and is not ferocious in the least).
