- Congrats to Richard Madden, who was named to Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow 2011 list. He is the fourth Thrones actor to make the list. Emilia Clarke and Harry Lloyd made this list last year. Natalia Tena made it on the list in 2005. Other past stars include film stars James McAvoy, Robert Pattinson, Emily Blunt, and Andrew Garfield.
- Congrats also to George R. R. Martin and his publishers, as all four of the A Song of Ice and Fire books are in the top 10 on the New York Times mass market paperback best sellers list, with A Game of Thrones as number one! (Beware of spoilers in the book synopses!)
- George R. R. Martin mentions in a recent blog post that he is putting the finishing touches on the first draft of his season two script. We already know that he is writing episode nine and has revealed the title to be “Blackwater.”
- An update to the filming locations rumor, Croatian site Serijala received a statement from the city of Dubrovnik which said they had not received any requests from HBO to film there at this time. They speculate that this does not necessarily rule it out as a possible filming location and guess that getting the permits for filming is likely the last step in the process.
- A glowing review of the Game of Thrones soundtrack by a non-reader and non-watcher over at The Flickcast. The soundtrack was released this past Tuesday and is available for purchase
.
- Speaking of merchandise, the HBO Shop has some new items in stock
including hats with the house sigils on them. (With no house words, just the sigil! Can we get t-shirts like that, please?) Also, for a limited time, you can use the promo code SAVE20 and get 20% off your order.
- Camelot has been canceled leading many fans to hope for some of the stars of that show possibly making the short drive up from Dublin to Belfast to star in Game of Thrones. Jamie Campbell-Bower was cast in the original pilot, so he has ties to the show; while Eva Green has long been a popular choice for Melisandre.
- Along those same lines, James Purefoy was recently interviewed by Collider and was specifically asked whether he would like to appear in Thrones. Here was his answer:
PUREFOY: If it was the right role on Game of Thrones, definitely. Of course! It’s a terrific series. It’s a great series of books. I love HBO. I’m on record saying that HBO is the best television company in the world, and I believe they are. I think they absolutely understand how to make television that is really, really vital and interesting and visceral, and all the things that television really should be. I’m a big fan of HBO.
What role do you think he could play?

I think Eva Green is a good actress, but on Camelot, something about her role made it really campy and over the top in the villain department. If she could take a step back and get the right direction, I think she could be our Melisandre.
James Purefoy IS Mance Rayder. No doubt about it. Or our friend the Smuggler.
For once, I really don’t think all this talk about Purefoy is pure speculation and fan wanking. I think HBO really might consider him. Wouldn’t that be a trip?

I’d like him as a Greyjoy, but I can’t decide if he’d make a better Victarion or Euron. I suppose he could do either, but he’s kinda smirky, so I’d probably go with Euron.
While reading this last time around I chose David O’Hara to be Victarion and Bruce Payne for Euron. But Purefoy might be better. Only problem? We won’t see him until season 3 at the earliest.
Oh, and no to Purefoy as Mance Rayder. Mance is supposed to be smaller-built and unassuming. Jon mistakes him for just some minstrel at first, thinking either Stygg or Tormund has to be Mance. You don’t want Mance to be played by somebody that makes everyone think “Oh, that’s Mance Rayder, definitely”.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Joseph Fiennes as Stannis anyone?
He has the look and age for it. now if we could make him look angry all the time.
Purefoy would in my eyes make excelent Mance, he has that pragmatic look.
He would also be good as Lord Bolton.

Josh Parker,
That is becasue Jon presumes that leader would listen to the music an not make it. And also Jon has his ears full about Mance Ryder and his army of wildlings. They never say how he looks so he presumes he must be big, fearsome and loud, like all other northern lords he has known.

Please, no. Fiennes is horribly overacting in whatever he’s in. Not good for Stannis at all.

Back from a 2-week vacation devoid of any interwebby connectivity, I’m both pleased and a bit disappointed that Stannis, Melisandre, and Davos have still not been officially cast! And even more tired of reading everybody’s ‘perfect casting prediction’, as we’ve read ALL those suggestions a hundred times before allready. Aaargh!!! (sorry, returning to work is never easy ;) Having said that, Camelot being canceled is of course a good thing, not only because that series was cr*p (tried to watch first episode and didn’t manage to sit it out till the end), but because that might give Nina Gold the opportunity to fish in a larger talent pool for roles she has been having difficulties to find good candidates. (truly hope though that the holy threesome mentioned above IS already cast but just not made official yet)
Also, having seen the last episode only last evening, I can finally add my impressions to the entire first series. Oh yes, enough people have commented on that allready as well, and I agree with many people’s opinions on the sexpositions etc, so I’ll try to keep it short and a bit controversial:
-Overall: I agree very well with Winter’s recap of season one: on average a film-worthy quality with decent acting (see below), but when push comes to shove, a bit lacking in scope. Despite that, D&D’s adaptation came out better than what I would have deemed possible on a tv budget! (hence rendering obsolete all criticism below…almost)
-Male Actors: I agree with most people: foremost Harry Lloyd, but also Sean Bean, Aiden Gillen, NCW (I concur…), Peter Dinkladge, Charles Dance, Jason Momoa, Iain Glenn etc have all shone in their roles. Unexpectedly good for me were Conleth Hill, Jerome Flynn, and the already mentioned Harry Lloyd. And, controversially as I promised, I really really don’t like Kit Harington as Jon Snow – he took one of my favourite book characters and turned him into an annoying whining boy. I know I stand (almost?) alone in this opinion though…
Female actors: Michelle Fairley is the standout actress by a long margin. She actually made Sean Bean a better actor in their scenes together, and that says a lot. Honourable mentions also to Sophie Turner (who I find too mature to call a ‘child actor, credit to her for that!), Kate Dickie, and the far-better-than-I-expected Roxanne McKee and Amrita Macharia. By now I can hear you thinking, what about Lena Heady and Emilia Clarke? For the first, I had high hopes from the first previews, and in part she was good, but too much of the time she wore that one eyebrow-raised expression that has really started to irritate me and a lot of others. And Emilia Clarke? Well, here comes the controversy again: I really don’t understand why all of you think she’s a decent, let alone a terrific actress… She has a good voice, but her expressions and especially her over-acted eye movements are horrible to watch. (turn off the sound and see what I mean on most every scene she plays) Well, maybe not horrible, but only soap-opera level, and I had expected much more for one of my favourite book parts!
-’Child’ actors: needs anything more be said? Except for Isaac HW, they have not been faultless (not even the great Maisy Williams), but they have been so good they could in most scenes easily keep up with there adult counterparts, and I can honestly say I’ve never seen that on such a wide scale. Kudo’s to Nina Gold!
I could keep on writing about GoT, just because I love the books so much, and like the series a lot, but I’ll leave it at that. Too many opinions on season 1 allready. Just want to say though: no matter how good any tv or movie adaptation is, the written word coupled to my imagination still rules by far. Keeping that in mind, GoT season 1 is pretty near as good as possible! Now just bring on news about season 2, and try to make that even better D&D! :-)
Tar KidhoQuote Reply
I lol’ed when I read this, mostly because I’ve always read Jon Snow as more than a bit emo in the beginning. It was what made me love him so much! The growth from an overly sensitive (about his position in the world) boy into a man that realizes it isn’t his honor that matters, but his duty to his new brothers and the realm. I just finished re-reading ASOS and I really liked the contrast between his story arc and Robb’s. Jon chooses to do what is better for the realm, no matter the cost to himself, while Robb chooses personal honor (not his own, but Jeyne’s) to the detriment of the realm, his other followers, and ultimately himself. Jon’s uncertainty, worry, and fear throughout his storyline is what makes it great. Otherwise I feel like he would be the typical “good guy” who always makes the right choice and does the right thing. :)
As to James Purefoy, the roles that come to my mind are: Euron Greyjoy, Oberyn Martell, or Daario Naharis. All three characters have a certain charisma (at least when I read them) that I think he could pull off quite well.
MiraxQuote Reply
Stella Maris,
I agree. If I were Purefoy and had to be in GoT, the role I’d want is the Red Viper. Martells look mediterranean, and in Rome he passed as such.
But other roles suggested here don’t have many lines of text. They are 2 dimensional standins such as the pirate meathead (Euron) or villain (Bolton) or the ol’ Robin Hood role (Mance). Sure, they could try to make those characters interesting in the writing and by the actors they use. In contrast, the Red Viper is interesting right off the bat and is a major role.
Epic the fantasticQuote Reply
Epic the fantastic,
In defense of Euron, at least he seems set up to be a much bigger player in the upcoming books. We don’t really know how large of a storyline he will have. While I love the Red Viper, I don’t see how your argument works for that character since of the ones listed above he’s the only one that is dead for sure at the end of ASOS.
MiraxQuote Reply
The answer is: Joseph Fiennes is Stannis.
Purefoy as either Crow’s Eye or Red Viper.
Yeah, but don’t forget about Claire Forlani (Camelot — Queen Igraine).

Tar Kidho,
I think Jack Gleason was incredible as Joffrey Baratheon. Joffrey is a dumb evil character that Jack Gleason really pumped blood into and made him believable.
My biggest problem with season 1 is the wig department. I have sent HBO numerous emails begging for them to fire the entire wig department. They have not responded.
I agree with you about Michelle Fairley; she is a solid performer and she had great chemistry with Sean Bean who by the way I found excessively boring in the role of Eddard Stark. And I kept thinking about Boromir, which pissed me off.
Epic the fantasticQuote Reply
I agree about that, and as said Jon was one of my favourite book characters, but it’s just that I wished it wouldn’t constantly show on his face :-) Based on what I’ve seen from him, I don’t think I’ll ever like Kit Harington in any role, but hopefully season 2 proves me wrong…
Tar KidhoQuote Reply
Mirax,
Yes it’s true the Viper dies, but it is still the biggest role between those chars; one of the major roles of that book. In true The Tudors style, they will develop the character, put all the viewers hopes and dreams in him and then have him die. The Viper is the most interesting role by far in comparison to the others mentioned. To live doesn’t mean to be interesting.
Mance Rayder is a major character with few lines and a clear agenda. Not that interesting. Euron, also clear agenda and a destructive force with no humanity. Interesting to play if you are putting on a puppet show.
Epic the fantasticQuote Reply
Tar Kidho,
Just set the Ep.1 scene where he laughs at how badly Bran misses his shot to play on a loop! It’s proof he knows how to laugh! :D I can understand your concern, though I don’t share it. Hopefully there will be a few more moments of levity in the upcoming seasons.
MiraxQuote Reply
Epic the fantastic,
I agree with everything you said. Btw, I always found Ned a rather boring person in the books as well, so in that regard SB portrayed him perfectly. (I never was a big fan of Boromir in LoTR, so that similarity didn’t bother me too much) And I found book-Catelyn an annoying person for most of the time, which is part of why I think Fairley’s rendition of that role is so great, since she made the character more realistic in my opinion.
Tar KidhoQuote Reply
That’s the point we differ on. : ) I find the Crow’s Eye to be an enigma that I want solved and therefore he is very interesting to me. I would put him and the Red Viper very close together in level of… interestingness? Mance and Bolton, not so much.
MiraxQuote Reply
I have to agree with you here. In some of Dany’s very powerful scenes she’s good, but not great, and it’s really not that difficult to act in a scene that’s already powerful and well written. In most of her scenes I find her to be stiff and, as you said, acting with her eyes a lot, and it looks a little silly. I don’t hate her, but I think there are other actresses on the show who are better by far. Sophie Turner, for example, can put so much emotion into the most understated scenes.. She’s superb, and at only 15, a very promising actress.
OhWhoCaresQuote Reply
By the way I think Davos was interesting at the start, but it’s not clear whether GRRM made a mistake trying to develop that character or not since Stannis suddenly became more interesting in the narrative. Davos seemed to be dropped from GRRM’s focus. Despite his actions at Blackwater and his lost sons tragedy, his history as a stealthy pirate is much more interesting than his active story as knight of onions,/b>. I guess that D&D can go either way there. and future books will tell.

Ahh good point! I don’t think Jack has gotten near enough credit for this role.. Everyone absolutely loathes Joffrey! He’s fantastic! Even his facial expressions just make me want to jump through the screen and strangle him. Awesome!

Camelot had so much build up and hype, I kept hearing that it would be Game of Throne’s rival etc etc. I’m honestly not surprised it was cancelled. I watched 4, maybe 5 episodes and couldn’t watch it anymore. It was a decent show, but I pretty much just got bored of it. It didn’t help that the arthurian legends have been told and retold, re-imagined and reworked so much over the years. A lot like the Robin Hood stories and re-imaginings. It falls flat after so many times (RH: Men in Tights is a timeless classic of untold epicness however) Maybe if they made some sort of steam punk version….that might hold my attention hehe.

I will try that when I get home to cure my KH-allergy :-) But I’m not very hopefull. There’s other tv/film characters that almost never laugh and which I liked nonetheless, so I guess it’s just KH’s face that doesn’t work for me. Truly, to me he constantly looks like a sulking boy that is about to shed crocodile tears. I’m sure he never laughs in real life and the few laughs he produces in season 1 are just his best acted attempts! :-)

I really hope Dubrovnik is selected for filming by HBO, that walled city is way to cool not to be utilized as a locale for something, cough! Dragonstone, cough!
I have a feeling Camelot’s loss will be GoT’s gain, there were some really good supporting players in that show, they tried their best to overcome shitting writing, crappy production values (heck even Seeker looked better) and dull directing. Probably why casting announcements have stalled as Nina mulls over her options.
This brings us to Mr. Badass Purefoy, he defintely needs a role in this show, he is just soooo choice. RV is too small and James is not right ethnically for it, Mance could be too small a role, and the Greyjoy brothers also, but if they merged a couple of them and expanded that role, JP would be a good pick. This is when I received a “lightbulb!”, how about a reunion, JP as Stannis and Cirian Hinds as Davos or vice versa. they would both be awesome together as in Rome, the big difficulty is whomever wins the role as Mel, the actress would have to be able to stand head to head with these two thespians. I know Gong Li can handle this situation, even perhaps Beyonce (stop snickering), Christina would be too overwelmed, and lost among them, literally! she is like a hair over 5 feet and JP and CH are tall. Ms Walker can, we all know, but only if she trimmed down and got that awesome body back she had ten years ago. Then there is Eva Green, she can easily stand toe to toe with them, if she plays it serious and not campy like Camelot.
We have too trust Nina on this, she will hit it out of the ballpark (July 4th reference).

Loved Tar Kidho’s review of Season 1. You said how you felt but you also acknowledged what others might have seen that you did not, and I am referring to this one aspect in film/tv criticism in general. Acting, like comedy is incredibly subjective when it comes to personal taste. I.E: Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, Lena Heady, Peter Dinklage’s accent etc. I just find it funny, how some people love something and have the perfect argument for loving it, and some hate something and have the perfect argument about hating it. I suppose this is a redundant statement for this comments section but just a conversation starter, what makes a good performance, or what makes a good scene? What makes something cheesy, what makes a scene really kick ass? Why do some people hate GOT’s main theme (I can’t wrap my head around that)?
Any thoughts…while were waiting in agony for ADWD and Season 2 casting announcements?

I don’t know what was up with Camelot, but Purefoy did not seem natural there. The first few episodes were actually an embarrassing train wreck until Purefoy’s character died. I think it was maybe his role as a evil, slightly dumb, barbarian king, that did not match his face and demeanor. Maybe Eva Green’s chemistry is all wrong with Purefoy. In any case to those fans who here dream of Purefoy and Eva Green in GoT, think about that terrible combination. To those who want Purefoy in a similar role (Euron) and Eva Green (older fire witch), think about that potential disaster.
Personally I can’t help but dreaming of another combination from 28 Days Later albeit reversed. Christopher Eccleston as Stannis and Naomie Harris as Melisandre (who was also incredible in the Pirate of the Caribbean films).

Just in case I have been misinterpreted: I have no issue with any of the actors that I mentioned in my post, merely that are bones of contention for some people on this board, on IMDB (they hate Lena Headey! But who cares about them really?) or among people I know personally.

First of all, the hate is not that strong and I’m sure it’s understandable if you try. Some roles are really tough to nail. Third, why can’t fans have varying opinions without you thinking something sinister is going on.

I don’t hate her. Like I said before, with her more powerful scenes, like the ones towards the end of the season, I thought she did well. But I just rewatched the first episode last night, and I really, really didn’t think she was very good. Just so stiff, no facial expressions whatsoever, which I know could come from her trying not to let any emotions show because she didn’t want to ‘wake the dragon’ but I think it was poorly acted. Just my opinion. I don’t think she was awful throughout, she had some good scenes, some bad scenes, and a lot of mediocre scenes. In my opinion.

This seems counterintuitive. Wouldn´t it be kind of risky to start pre-production (scouting locations, recrouting extras, setting all the little wheels in motion etc.) if they don´t even know yet if they will be allowed to film there.
On another note I would love to see Purefoy as the read viper. He has such an delicious irreverance when playing Marc Anthony, that I also see in the red viper. I don´t se him that off etnically. I allways imagined Westeros as a mini europe. North is scotland, west is england, Vale is Austria/switcherland, Reach is France, and Dorne is Spain/Portugal. Purefoy could pass for spanish.
If people want him to pair up with Ceiran Hinds in this, they could have him be Doran Martell, and have them have a scene together before Oberyn leaves for Kings landing. Ceiran would be fantastic as Doran Martell. Sort of like the character his Julius Ceasar would have become if he had been allowed to grow old and end in a wheelchair. And think of “Fire and blod!!!!”

I’m actually surprised that so many people complain that Jon seems whiny and emo because he was exactly like that in the book. I mean, he grew up with his trueborn siblings knowing that they had a place in the world whereas he didn’t really belong. And the only kind of “mother figure” he knew hated him and wanted him gone, his father wouldn’t even talk about his real mother. Then he went to the Night’s Watch and it wasn’t really as he expected but he adjusted in the end.
But then, Jon is my favourite character and I don’t mind him being sullen and withdrawn, I like characters like that. ;)

I assume what ‘feels natural’ to different people differs, depending on what they find important, and I think I’m quite picky on that in general. (I also like to believe that I’m quite good in real life to know when people are not being true with me, but that’s probably nothing but an idle hope ;) On top of that, in the case of a book adaptation, there is the factor that different people picture the written word differently in their minds while reading. So it probably is unavoidable that a certain scene is considered great by some but wrong (or cheesy) by others… Different people have different opinions, and if you could write in a scientific paper why this is exactly, I’m sure it would win you a Noble Prize :-)
Mirax, Lisa,
Ugh, even seeing him laugh makes me cringe… :-)

To me it was eyes-overacting, looking very fake (very directed, I could almost constantly hear D&D suggest ‘ok, now you look to your lower left…’ or something like that). My appologies for that :-)
Oh, and the stable boy was indeed not terrific, but in the same scene Maisy Williams wasn’t really either, and I put that down to a shoot they did at the end of a long day when they just wanted to have it over with, resulting in a poorly directed, rushed scene. (I don’t think this was down to poor editing as some suggested…)

Why do we care about the stableboy’s performance? One scene, two lines, and dead. It’s not like he was that memorable in the books.
Or must everyone on the show be award-worthy because it’s GoT?
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Tar Kidho,
I know u aren’t a troll, but have seen poster names pop up on other boards and a few here that I never recognized before, and they are attacking Clarke and other possible Emmy noms. Once award season is in full swing, negative attacks on noms from GoT will be in earnest as well as other candidates, as supporters for noms from other shows jump on this board and other ones, attacking them while building up their favorites. The Weinsteins are notorious for hiring out hit teams to attack other noms throughout media circles during Oscar season (they have been quite successful at it too), so why wouldn’t television rivals do it for the Emmy’s.

morbiczer,
First no need to apologize for your opinion but thank you for spoiler-guarding it.
The Red Viper is a memorable character and his actions are a highlight of the plot. The total amount of screen time is marginal to the impact. With the Viper, you get active plot movement which is very exciting.
I assume the producers will use Oberyn to the fullest. Not only will they transfer him from the pages but ‘sexpanding’ a little. The producers will want viewers to grasp “the south” and “the martells” through Oberyn Martell. It’s a very important short role with a lot of character, action, and dialog–the kind of role that is ready-made for an actor to fall into it running.
Jillian,
James Frain. Loved him in The Tudors. In trued Tudors style, they developed him and killed him off, and a little the same way in True Blood.
Great point. It was a key moment in Arya’s character, that killing. But ‘they’ let it slide, no fault of that kid’s. Fans also let it slide as the funny ‘bad actor moment’ of the series. I only saw the scene once but it felt like everyone was embarassed that such words would come out of an innocent child so they allowed it to happen. Hello? You guys are doing Game of Thrones. Shoot it again until you can feel the murderous hate coming from that boy’s mouth. Ahh.. why can’t they all be like The Butcher’s Boy’s Eamonn Owens?

From what little I’ve seen of James Purefoy (Rome, Camelot) I think he is at his best when he is playing a charismatic character (Marc Anthony). Therefore, I think he would make a fantastic Mance Rayder. I really can’t see him playing Stannis, who I think needs to be played by someone who can convey stoicism just from his eyes, jawline and physical demeanor.
I liked Eva Green in the James Bond movie, and thought she was quite good in the Camelot pilot. I can’t really think of a role for her for the Game of Throne series, but wouldn’t object to snatching her up now that she’s available.
I haven’t seen enough of Jamie Cambell Bower to form an opinion of him.
I must say I agree with an earlier poster who suggested Naveen Andrews for the Red Viper. I don’t know if he’s up for it since he recently wrapped up 6 seasons of Lost and I got the feeling he was ready for it to be over long before the finale. He can be quite charismatic and has experience with on screen combat. I would love to see them portray Dorne with a non-Caucasian Middle Eastern or Indian race. Right now the world of Westeros is so pasty white and D &D took some heat for their portrayal of the Dothraki as a catchall of non-whites. I hope they improve on this in the future. The world of A Song of Ice and Fire will feel more realistic as an actual world if there are more cultures and races represented.
Congratulations to Richard Madden. He was not at all how I pictured Robb Stark but, my God, he completely convinced me over the course of the season particularly the later episodes. King of the North indeed! I also agree that Emilia Clarke has really convinced me that she is perfect for Dany. I only wish he had bleached he hair rather than wear that wig, because it is so obvious she is wearing a wig. It does look more natural as the season progressed, but still…

I will mention you in my acceptance speech. Seriously though I agree that people have different opinions and expectations (this is really key) in how well these things (acting, scenes etc) are absorbed in terms of quality. For example I watched Excalibur with my friends last night, and there was a varied (understatement of the century) response to the film. If you have seen this movie, you will know exactly what I am talking about.
On Emilia Clarke: D and D obviously have their reasons for picking her. Was she perfect? No. But she to me at least, was more than adequate and delivered in key moments. I will add that she is a very green actress. I equate her growth as an actor to Dany’s character development. And to the first season as a whole you can apply Clarke’s situation. They tried many things, a lot of them worked, some didn’t. Next year will really be the deciding factor on what this series can bring us in terms of bring ASOIAF to life.
And personally, I think (and maybe..hope) that Lena Headey, free of pregnancy and the early phases of motherhood, will blow us away with Cersei as the series progresses.
But I’m an optimist :-)

I do kind of like the idea of Purefoy as Oberyn, but at the same time (as others have said), it’s a great opportunity for HBO to cast some non-caucasian actors and bring more diversity to the cast.
Besides, there are so many good parts in ASoIaF that I’m sure he would be fine in, and it might be interesting to see him in part that was a bit different than some of the things he’s done in the past.

The kid had some bad luck being cast in one of the most anticipated scenes of the show. If it was just him taking care of the stable noone would have cared, but sadly he found himself stuck in that scene haha. His acting sucked (yeah, and Maisie wasn’t on top form too), the direction, the lighting, the editing sucked as hard as the acting. The acting doesn’t need to be award-worthy, but it does need to be better than the average primary school acting. I don’t blame him though, as some others said the fault lies with the director and D&D.

Hard to say as what they are doing is searching actors for the roles and not the other way around. As it should be. Eva Green might be a great Melisandre, but there may be an unknown actress that is much better in the particular role. It may turn out in the end that this holds for most of the roles, no matter how experienced and well known actors try the casting.

Talking about casting…..PLEASE!!!! With the cancellation of Camelot the sheer thought of Jaime Campbell Bower ever gracing the set of Game of Thrones again gives me the shivers! I truly believe he was one of the main reasons why this show was canceled. Everywhere I read people were complaining about his acting and portrayal of the role. Yeah the show stunk in other aspects also like directing, editing, set design and other poorly cast actors but I think it’s demise was heavily due to people not watching it because of him! I don’t think Nina Gold would touch him with a ten foot pole!

With regard to the soundtrack (which I just started sampling), does anyone notice the stylistic similarities between Bear McCreary’s style? It wasn’t as noticeable on the actual show, but when you listen to it on its own it sounds nearly identical in some places. I think it was track three, but it sounds very similar to a piece of music on the season 2 BSG soundtrack I own. I can’t remember which one, but I’ll check later when I have it at hand. o.o

I only watched the first two episodes, but I’m not convinced the poor quality of the program was Bower’s fault. Even many of the very strong actors in the cast came off as cheesy in the show, and I think it was mainly due to the atmosphere that the show’s creators had in mind for the production. I mean, Bower didn’t write any of the terrible dialogue his character had, or come up with the teen-dream-esque drivel of a plot. I would be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt in this case.
It’s also pretty clear he gets type-cast a lot because of his looks.

Stop fake casting on looks. It’s obvious that looks are rightfully a secondary consideration for Nina Gold & Co. to actual acting ability, except for very general needs like, say, gender or being a little person.
Tyrion’s handsome, Cersei’s a natural brunette, Robert’s short, Illyrio isn’t fat enough, neither is Sam, Catelyn’s too ugly, so is Margaery (and Cersei), the Hound’s scar isn’t noticeable enough, and every adult is too old.
Worked out fine. The idea that Beyonce, who is ridiculously awful, would ever be offered the part is crazy. The idea that they’d pay Beyonce, who makes a ridiculous amount of money, is also crazy.

I also pray that they don’t even consider C-Bower or Fiennes. Either one in anything close to a major role would ruin the part for me. So this does not come as a complete surprise…
For my money, if “Game Of Thrones” could score Eva Green and James Purefoy for any roles, that would be like winning the lottery! I would LOVE to see Eva Green on Game of Thrones! It’s a shame they couldn’t get her earlier, she could have done Cersei perfectly (naturally blonde as well). She has a knack for dark, twisty characters that are slightly deranged. I hadn’t thought about Melisandre, but if she were to get the part, I’m sure she’d be perfect as per usual…
As for Camelot, I’d have to say that the most problematic castings in the series were Green and Jamie Campbell Bower as the two leads, the main issue being that Green was too strong of an actor, or Bower was too weak. I watched the series in hopes it would eventually stop f***ing itself over (it didn’t), and through out the whole thing, I found myself rooting for Morgan, not Arthur. Bower failed to empower his character in the same way that Green did, there was no sincerity of emotion from him at all. If truth be told, he was not helped at all by the writers, but even in the instances where he was supposed to be powerful, he came off as weak and indefensible. If it was a necessity to have Bower play Arthur, they shouldn’t have hired Eva Green.

james puerfoy was the ONLY thing .. okay only other thing (naked Eva Green being the first thing) that was good about that abortion that was Camelot. he was great despite terrible writing. he could easily play anything in this show but i think he’d be a great Stannis. it is a big part and he could bring the proper gravitas and threatening persona to the role.
and while i am on record as loving Eva Green i still think that Femke Janssen and Saffron Burrows are better choices. but just like i wouldn’t kick her out of bed i wouldn’t kick her out of the show either … i think she did about as well as she could in a terrible show with shite writing … still i am a bit wary after seeing her in Camelot. plus i’d like someone taller and more angular and regal bearing for Melisandre like the aforementioned.
and for the love of Zeus will people quit suggesting Christina Hendricks for Melisandre. let’s pretend she is not a mainstay cast member of the most critically acclaimed televsion series of the past 5 years which is still going … and that she is american and thus a long shot for this production. just because she has red hair does not means she is a suitable Mel. she isn’t tall enough. she isn’t regal enough and she isn’t very “exotic” or “otherwordly” looking. just stop it. i’d rather people go back to suggesting miley cyrus for something.

ever since i saw her in Kingdom of Heaven she has been my ideal of feminine beauty (surplanting Helena Bonham-Carter and Kate Beckinsale). and as somebody pointed out she was excellent in KoH and in the Bond film … she was even one of the few bright spots in the film defiling of Golden Compass.
but Camelot was just so, so bad it is hard for it not to taint everybody involved (except James Puerfoy who was excellent in the first two episodes before thankfully dying before the show began to get really really bad). could it just have been the overall suck of the show, the art design, the script and the direction? yes … but even knowing that it is hard not to make me think less of her. shouldn’t she of least have noticed after a few days of filming how bad the show was? surely somebody as amazing and smart as her would pick up on the trainwreck that was about to happen.
anyway i wouldn’t be sad to see her get the part. maybe she could redeem herself. but i still think i’d rather see Femke Janssen or Saffron Burrows or even Tricia Helfer (not likely).

Love the Dreamers, what Film Studies major wouldn’t? Michael Pitt was fantastic but to me, so was Eva. And while she was nekkid quite a bit in the movie, I don’t base her talent from that. Her critically acclaimed Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale was beautifully tragic and her performance in the non-butchered extended cut of Kingdom of Heaven proved she had the chops for epic drama and she was indeed shortchanged in the theatrical release of that film. I don’t think she has fallen low either. From the very beginning you can smell the blood leaking from the Camelot production. She hammed it up and got her paycheck like everyone else on the show. She made one bad tv series and here’s to her next project. Hopefully it’s more successful.
But I don’t think she will be Melisandre. I can’t see her in the role to be honest. Someone like a young Alice Krige, basically the anti-Galadriel or a Saffron Burrows, Famke Jannsen type. Personally I would love to see the gorgeous Dane, Connie Nielsen in the role. Her small bit in the Devil’s Advocate proves that she has the presence with her menacing, supernaturally seductive temptress . And for talent I found her iron willed mother figure Lucilla in Gladiator proof of enough her ability to make people take notice of her. But she may be a little too old now…
Oh and whoever suggested Ciaran Hinds for Dorran Martell: Perfect.
Josh AtreidesQuote Reply
Dunno about Purefoy or Eva Green, there’s probably better actors/actresses out there for the main roles.
Mance Rayder should be able to sing :P so we can hear The Dornishman’s Wife!
Jordan HealeyQuote Reply
If it were up to me, Purefoy could have any role on the show that he wants.
I’d love him as Stannis, but my gut tells me that that role has already been cast and just hasn’t been announced yet.
MWQuote Reply
The roles Mr. Sewell plays are all the same.
I’d prefer unknown actors, to tell the truth. Stars bring too much baggage, generally speaking.

Chris77,
Regarding Ramsay I will say that if he can do a good Brit accent…that role belongs to Garrett Dillahunt. Watch him as Wolcott in Deadwood, I defy you to disagree with me then.
As for Roose himself, give that role to Michael Wincott, our dearly departed Guy of Gisborne.
Josh AtreidesQuote Reply
Wilcott is really good at hateable characters. He was also awesome in The Count of Monte Cristo. He could make a good Balon Greyjoy (or maybe Aeron?) also
Jordan HealeyQuote Reply
Yes I know she originally did! What I meant is that after his disaster in Camelot, she wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole for casting him again! LOL!
SeanFanQuote Reply
Jordan Healey,
Yeah I can see Wincott as a Greyjoy. Stephen Dillane who played Jefferson in John Adams has very cruel features, cheekbones, sharpgray- blue eyes and thin lips with an air of authority. He has this quiet menace about him. He could also play our Leech Lord.
Josh AtreidesQuote Reply
Purefoy as Stannis ?…I’m sure he could handle the part..( but what a wicked waste of sex appeal that would be ) ;)
obsidianQuote Reply
At least then I’d look forwards to the sex scenes between Stannins and Mel! Though I really can’t see Purefoy playing an anti-charismatic character. Mance Ryder would be my pick for him, a leader who rules by personality, not sword.
I wonder if Jacopo Belbo only crawls out from under his rock now and again to beat his chest and insist that Mel be tall and his idea of fuckability.

Does anyone think Benedict Cumberbatch would make a great Jaqen H’qhar? Would love to see him in Game of Thrones, he was great in Sherlock etc :D

James Purefoy is a good actor but I really really don’t see him as any of the characters suggested; if I had to choose one, it’d be Ser Davos Seaworth:
http://www.lahiguera.net/cinemania/actores/james_purefoy/fotos/10332/james_purefoy.jpg
Could be Davos, IMO
As for Roose Bolton, I’d love to see Jason Isaacs in that role.
SlyntQuote Reply
I’ll just my support for Purefoy = Red Viper voices here. To me he’d be perfect.
I think Dorne should have some people with a bit of an arabic look (Rhoyne descendants) but they’re mostly mixed so having a 100% arabic looking Oberyn would be wrong in my view. And Purefoy is swarthy enough to make him believably mediterranean.
All those considerations aside, I just thnk he would bring the right attitude to this role- highborn, smug and sarcastic. And truth be told, there are some other such roles he could handle (Euron first of all)… but somehow I can’t see him as the humble Davos (maybe I never saw Purefoy in such roles).
Eh, but what’s with the Beyonce hype here? Even if I liked her, and even if I thought that’s what Melisandre should look like… can she even act?
Sorry, I’m totally against casting music stars in GOT… let’s focus on quality not stardom and (cheap, in my opinion) sex-appeal. I pray this will never happen.
Magda DąbrowskaQuote Reply
I know he might be getting on in years, but I would love to see Alexander Siddig on this show as a Dornishman, for example Oberyn (though he might not have the physicality for that role). He has the exotic look, and is an excellent actor with a great range of roles.
JarvisQuote Reply
He strikes me more as a Doran type.
DomQuote Reply
Dom,
I wondered about that too, though I always pictured Doran as being a bit overweight (though of course gout does not necessitate weight-gain, and I am terribly affected by a picture of a middle eastern Henry VIII). Siddig’s work in Syriana, as a Middle Eastern prince, is a great screen test for Doran, perhaps?

LOL, no.

There are definitely some tracks that evoke Bear’s work, especially Dany stuff. For the most part I think it does its own thing, but I’ve heard it here and there throughout, absolutely.

I haven’t finished the second book yet, but just from reading the first couple hundred pages, I can picture Rufus Sewell (A Knight’s Tale) as Stannis…
WendellDQuote Reply
Now that I reread my comment, I can see how that’s how it sounds. I don’t think either she or Lena Headey is ugly at all. I think both are very attractive, frankly.
I do think people “attractive up” the book characters. Margaery is quite literally described at “very pretty” (and I can’t even remember the point of view) yet many readers think of her as outrageously gorgeous and a sexpot.
Fantasy readers are used to every woman being hot.
For example, someone up there recommends Elena Satine for Ygritte. I wouldn’t mind her being cast, but the physical description of Ygritte is not the beauty that Elena is. She has crooked teeth, she’s dirty, etc.
You can cast someone beautiful — I have no issues with that. But it isn’t necessary, and it’d be better with someone who wasn’t drop dead gorgeous. The story is better if she is “normal.”
AlanQuote Reply
He would make the perfect Mance Rayder
Catherine Henry-GreskovicQuote Reply
oh yes, Elena Satine for Ygritte!
I’m getting more and more the idea that all those castingannouncements will be made when I’m reading Dance next week, damn you HBO!!!
KnurkQuote Reply
I have been mulling over the question, why no casting announcements with production so close?, well a possible idea, which is really an endorsement for the series, is………………….
GoT has so much critical acclaim, and growing fanbase, with sooooo many roles to be filled yet, that premiere talents have asked their agents to contact Nina, to inquire about playing parts in future seasons. Therefore Ms. Gold is swamped with all these big names, even for the smallest parts (cameos) and she hasn’t been able to finalize many of the roles.
tysnowQuote Reply
tysnow, an interesting theory. However we know from GRRM, that as of three weeks ago they had 5 or 6 roles filled (meaning they had selected the actors they wanted for the role and were in contract negotiations). So it seems the delay isn’t in Nina and David & Dan having a hard time making up their minds but rather that the contract negotiations are taking quite a long time.

Tobias Menzies is Stannis. It is known.
WyGlaafQuote Reply
WTF is up with people saying Catelyn’s ugly? She is gorgeous and the actress is doing a fantastic job!
HandmaidenofDanyQuote Reply
Stacey,
Purefoy COULD play any role listed above, but giving him Stannis really would waste his natural acting tendencies… Sure, playing another Marc Antony can lead to type-casting, but if he has the chops for those roles he should look to them first. Stannis can be found from other actors who have their own tendencies (like McKidd).
So my top 6 roles for Purefoy in order of my personal preference: 1.) Red Viper 2.) Daario 3.) Euron 4.) Mance Rayder 5.) Hyle Hunt 6.) Jaqen
I still keep thinking of Davos as a typecast in the vein of ray winstone or ray stevenson; Gentle, yet somehow even more world-weary and worn than sean bean as Ned. James Purefoy just doesn’t say “gentle” to me.
As for Ciaran Hinds, if Doran is already taken, I think he’d be an outstanding Marwyn if he doesn’t mind waiting 2 years. Also would be excellent as Qyburn if they decide not to go with a “wormtongue” acting style for his TV adaptation.
Also I’m generally curious who they’ll get for some of the future “prophecy” scenes since they left the Bran/Rickon ones in. So the Reed kids, the ghost lady of whatever hill, maggy the frog, quaithe, hotu as a whole, are all castings I just want to see happen, irregardless of the actors chosen.
And of course, I’m curious to see who gets Strong Belwas. :)

Winter Is Coming,
Yea, but aside from Marg and Brienne, the other 3-4 could have been small supporting roles. The big 3 might have still needed to be cast, then there are the small cameo type roles, perfect for really big names just to say they had taken part in one of the greatest tv series off all-time.
tysnowQuote Reply
If I had to choose between 3 big names or rather unknown actors with acting skills and some money left for some actual scenes and stuff, well the choice would be simple for me.

I’d love to see Ciaran Hinds play ANY ROLE HE WANTS in Game of Thrones! He was so good in Rome (I’d never seen him before, but was very impressed).
Also, how come no one cares about Craster casting? Brad Dourif for Craster!
LexQuote Reply
I was astounded when I saw his interviews in the EE of LOTR (and later Deadwood) by how good he is at masking his US dialect. He would make a great Craster or even better Qyburn…

Would love Dourif as Qyburn. But he’s such a versatile actor I’d feel bad pigeon-holing him that way.

How about Philip Glennister? I loved him in Life on Mars and he´s already done classics before.
Are there any characters for him in ASoIaF? He´s such a Bronn or Blackfish to me… no matter the appearance, I mean temperament ( saw him being softly too but I like less).
Maybe an angry Lannister??? Something????

I don’t think anyone has mentioned this, but Purefoy would also make an outstanding Halfhand. Or possibly merge all the Kettleblacks into one role and give it to him.

Another interview with James Purefoy in which he praises Game of Thrones.
Interesting bit is where he says “Aside from JOHN CARTER, the only thing is the thing I’m doing at the moment, we are doing a big cycle of history plays for the BBC of the Shakespeare history plays, but the other thing I can’t talk about, because we are right slap bang in the middle of negotiations, and I don’t want to queer the pitch just in case it doesn’t come off.”
Wouldn’t it be awesome if he was talking about negotiations to be in GOT?
If not Stannis, how about Purefoy as Randall Tarly?
He is versatile enough that he could be Roose Bolton if he wanted the part.
