Season two filming draws near

While many of you are elbows deep in George R. R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons, the team in Belfast is currently in full-blown pre-production mode as they ramp up for filming of season two of Game of Thrones. Filming is scheduled to start on July 25, less than two weeks away.

We have had reports of some of the cast in Belfast now, doing table reads and probably costume fittings as well. While back in England, some of the Night’s Watch crew have been taking horse back riding lessons recently. Stark guard extras are currently being booked for work on the 25th and 26th. Sets have been erected in the Northern Ireland countryside. And those ubiquitous pink GOT signs are popping up around Belfast once again.

Winter Is Coming: I love receiving all the little tidbits of info and trying to form an idea of what they might be filming or working on at the moment. Sounds like those days are right around the corner once again.

If I had to guess, the set is probably command tents for Renly and his entourage.

Where is it ? – looks a bit like the grounds of Castle Ward – but tbh-it could be anywhere.

I spotted this set a week or so ago, been racking my brain to try to figure it out. I think it it a complete enclosure, some kind of courtyard maybe? but why in the middle of a field? Time will tell. It is quite close to where I live so it would be nice to get a days work there. It would also be sweet to be a Stark Guard again……….and I am available 25-26th…..Stand by your phones comrades, its a lottery. Good luck…………….

The set is in Moneyglass.follow the pink signs. The picture is taken from the road, but as you can see it does`nt give much away. Be carefull ,the road is narrow, with a blind bend and no verge.

    Two Feathers,

Nothing like cracking open a new book. I’m old school, no ipad or nook for me. Barnes and Noble only had two on the shelf when I picked it up over lunch. They probably had more in the back but the clerk told me they had already sold a ton this morning.

Loved this question in Hibberd’s interview with GRRM:

JH: The big question is what’s going to happen in the ratings between seasons. But I suspect, if anything, it’s going to come back bigger.
GRRM: Well, Natalie Dormer [cast as Margaery Tyrell] is a great choice to start with. She was best thing about The Tudors and the best Anne Boleyn I’ve ever seen.

Hope this quiets down the Natalie naysayers!

One of the remarkable things about being a fan of ASoIaF since 1996 is that the patience of fans for new installments in the series has been forged and tempered in an atmosphere of EPIC waiting.

Never mind about waiting for ADwD since 2005. I’ve been waiting for this damn book since November 2000. It has been a 10.5 year wait!!

So with that sort of track record, the wait of a mere nine months until the next season of GoT is a comparative walk-in-the-park.

All by way of saying, while nobody likes to wait for another season, the wait is really not that bad as compared to the wait for the novels. It’s nowhere NEAR as bad! With the addition of pics of sets and props, Comic-con and casting discussions, it makes it all seem to pass by pretty damned fast when you get right down to it…

I also got the call today for work in late July, but on advising I’d changed my appearance I was bumped off. Will be considered for some of the more fancy guys, to quote the phrase used… so that should go some ways to hinting who I could have been and who I might yet be…(ooooh cryptic!)
Anyways, seriously bummed to miss out on a part I was begging to get all of last year, but at least it confirms I had the right look so it has at least steeled my determination for the same part in season 3… operation long hair restarts today :)

Sounds like you would have been a Stark, but you might now become a Lannister?? Don`t know what you did last year, but there was usually some banter between the regular Stark guards and the regular Lannister guards…Turn Cloaking was frowned upon and could leave you open for some serious (lighthearted) abuse.

    Two Feathers,

So my clue was not so cryptic eh?

In terms of last season I believe we had a day together (a snowy day) as Umber Bannermen in Robb’s base camp under view of Audley’s Castle and I think you were also there when I was for a less snowy (but bloody colder) day as Tribesmen when Tyrion and his raggle-taggle army entered the Lannister camp. That’s if I’m right in thinking who you are – if not, then ignore me!!!

I only got 2 late/last minute call ups last year, so was hyped to get an early call this year but quickly brought back down to earth with a bump as I was given the shoe… ah well, I’m happy to turncloak and banter away if it means more involvement with the show – roll on Season 2!

    Qthulhu,

Qt… I appreciate your dilemma, but as I wasn’t attached to any role or House for an extended period of time, I can’t make a fair judgement on how hard/easy it would be to have to change, particularly if it were a change to an enemy House.

I would rather be involved then not however, so I’d say do what it takes.

As I had so little onset exposure last year, I am happy to flit between Houses and roles just to be involved, so if I’m needed as Baratheon, Lannister, Dragonstone Baratheon, Greyjoy, Nightswatch, Tyrell or whomever then I’ll be glad of it. Plus, I’m a fan of armour, so the more variations I might get to try on, the happier I’ll be.

    Alan,
I was thinking earlier on in the book, when the gold cloaks come looking for Gendry at the inn.

Someone was mentioning it has a courtyard. Seems more like the holdfast with Yoren’s last stand than an inn. I can’t believe they’d build a whole set for an occurrence that could frankly happen along the road. Then again, so could the scene I mention as well.

      Quote  Reply

  46. Posted July 13, 2011 at 5:42 pm | Permalink

    Alan,
True, and I did think that when I was trying to put a scene to it. But I didn’t think it could be Yoren’s last stand simply because that set doesn’t look to have any kind of tower house. It also doesn’t seem to have a river nearby, but that’s not a necessity.

You’re probably more likely to be correct than me, though, because you’re right, there’s not really much need for a set for the scene I mentioned. Unless they remodel it for another scene later as well.

I am currently listenning to his “Battlestar Galactica” soundtracks for season 2 and 3, as well as his work for “BSG: Razor” and “BSG: The Plan”, as well as “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”. Hey WiC, FaB, HmR, if you guys read this. A little off topic but I just got the idea in my head.

I thought a cool alternative to the curtain call posts would be to make a post about how awesome some of the acting was with the cast whose characters are still alive (not individual ones but a general post).

I just thought it would be cool for people to have a place to praise (or not) some of the more brilliant actors/actresses. Michelle Fairley for example, the look on her face when she sees Robb coming back from the Whispering Wood sold me on her. And speaking of Robb, I would say he deserves a mention as well. And of course many others. Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harrington, Jack Gleeson, Iain Glen. I could go on and on haha, but perhaps I’ll save it for the thread if you guys think It’s a good idea.

    Thanks! :)

Also found this nice vid interview with Emilia from about a month ago:

As for SDCC, there will be a cast signing at the WB booth (#4545) on Friday at 4:30 (right after the panel). However, it will be wristbanded, with the bands given out at 11:00 at the Sails Pavilion. Which is cool, cuz that way you’ll know up front if you’ll be able to get in, but sucks because I’ll most likely already be in line for the panel at 11. Typical.

Only parts of the pilot were filmed in Scotland, it was only Northern Ireland and Malta that were used for the main series.

Some Winterfell shots from Ep1 (leaving for the hunt) would have been from that shoot but that’s about it.

I feel like… as amazing as the book is, there is somthing pretty awesome about the show that it might be better to read the book after the show to get details.

What is th counsel out there from hard core fans of the books?

I would say read the book first. Just because it is so much more nuanced that what you see on the show. (not that I’m complaining, there’s just so much that you can’t really convey on screen) I think you’ll get a better understanding of the story by reading the book, then watching the show.

Both the book and the show (obviously the show) are quite cinematic, but the books have the POV of characters and their inner thoughts that can´t be translated on tv.
My advice? Read them all! Now!

I’m excited for the new season and just finished ADwD yesterday. I’ll be starting my re-read soon and scaning WiC.net for any new casting news.

I can’t wait to see D&D pull their hair out trying to adapt AFfC and ADwD.

    andrea,

Thanks so much Andrea, Rob and Jean-Michael… makes sense and I will probably just move into Clash of Kings, but…. My hesitation is… when I watched the first episode of GOT, and Jaime Lannister pushed Bran off the ledge… holy crap, that was dramatic, made my heart skip a beat and I COULD NOT WAIT each and every week to see the show… and I even got my wife into the show! And for me, Ned being killed, absolutely shocking because I didnt know, and so beautifully done on television, and I worry it wont be as dramitic if I had read the booksfirst… and yet, I suppose, it was as dramatic or more so reading it for the first time…

    Thanks.

don´t worry, I think through the books you can complete the experiencie of the show. That scene with Jaime and Bran is an example of what I say.

We have had reports of some of the cast in Belfast now, doing table reads and probably costume fittings as well.
